Gets better as it goes despite some technical hiccups

Having recently enjoyed Wilson's cleverly researched and very well put together film which showed the many influences and references within Kill Bill, I was looking forward to this one. It starts slowly because it was not quite as interesting when it focuses on the fight sequences and parallels in other films because these were not really references or inspirations so much as YUEN Woo-Ping using the same style and sequences as he had in other films. The action was impressive of course and it was nice to see, but it didn't really fit with the goal of the film.

After this though it does get more interesting to see links to ideas, visual style and even sequences that appear to be adapted and adopted from other sources. This was better and more interest as for many it was the first time I had known of them and they were cleverly compared and contrasted – although of course some of the more obvious stuff like Alice in Wonderland probably could have been shorter. Technically it is still very well done but unlike the Kill Bill film, here the sound from the two clips seems to clash very badly at several points (particularly where one or both clips have music and they are played under the short film's music. This is a minor annoyance though, it just surprised me a bit since Wilson had set the bar high for himself with his other film.

Still, worth seeing because it not only reminds how good a film The Matrix is, but also does a good job of showing all the cultural links, references and inspirations within it.
