Very cool - but typical American competition show
taywarren2919 October 2018
Skin Wars is so cool because there's nothing else on TV like it. The one thing it has in common with every other competition show filmed in the US, is they stage it and don't always send home the painter who did the worst artwork, and on the other end often reward a person top painter when there was someone else who deserved it more. They also need to come up with different ideas, they copied ideas from season to season which makes it really predictable.

Quality contestants, bad results for s1 and 2
isislam1 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched all three seasons and I definitely think Dutch and Avi deserve the win. It shocked me when they sometimes value "creativity" and sometimes think "technical skills" is more important. Season 3's result makes most sense, but I hate it when Rupaul brings in drag queens and had the "beauty pageant". Don't get me wrong, I love drag race but this is Skin Wars! When the queens showed up in Season 2 it was fine but Season 3 is too much where they definitely stole the spotlight. Overall, this show is good but I just wished they would pick the strongest painter as the winner.

Why aren't the right winners chosen?!
meliannotta27 December 2019
I love this production, the art is amazing, Rupaul is one of my favourite characters of all time, but unfortunately I really don't think the judges picked the right winners of each season

A Celebration of Artistry and Beauty
atlasmb7 July 2016
Hosted by the beautiful Rebecca Romijn, "Skin Wars" is a competition show that pits body painting artists against each other in a series of challenges. Verdicts are delivered by a panel of judges.

Each season, the producers try to throw more varied, more difficult, and more imaginative tasks at the artists. Such challenges can include camouflage work (where they attempt to make the model disappear into a background image), themed challenges (which can involve anything from super heroes to scenes from nature), or images inspired by the artists' own stories.

I love this show because it really illustrates the incredible talents of these artists. Painting is difficult, in general, but painting on a curved, movable surface presents some specific, harder challenges.

They also use different types of models. On one episode, they painted inspiring images on breast cancer survivors, which was very empowering and extremely beautiful.

It's nice to have television shows that celebrate artistry and beauty. "Skin Wars" is one of the best.

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert! Okay so the concept and challenges within the show are spot on the show is so engaging and hooks you so quickly (I finished season 2 in a day). However I noticed LOTS of things that displeased me. Firstly it was extremely sexist Rachel (season 2) and mythica (season 1) were dragged along (not at all strong in the competition) and other males who had more potential were dumped over those two USELESS (my opinion) competitors. I believe this is due to the sexist nature of the show, watch closely they tend to favor women over men A lot (this is coming from a woman's perspective). Secondly the two winners both female I might add were nearly eliminated so many times from the show and both males who came runners up Dutch season 1 and Avi season 2 were never even in the bottom three. When Natalie won season 1 it was because of her creativity and Dutch lost so many challenges because he was too technical and not creative enough. Fair enough right....WRONG. Because Avi in the season 2 final was SOOO much more creative than lana even though she was more technical. They gave it to lana because of the technical. That would be all fine if they didn't contradict themselves. This show will do anything to not give the men the final prize and it's sickening. I could go more into depth but I only have 1000 words. My conclusion

NOT WORTH WATCHING TOO MUCH BIAS

Our family's favorite show!
dawgmadre5 September 2018
My daughter started watching this and I thought it would be fluff she could watch on her own. But pretty soon our whole family was hooked and we all watch together now. Love the personalities, love the remarkable paintings, love the artistry and drama of it all. So glad she discovered this gem!

Compulsive viewing that left a bad taste in my mouth

Warning: Spoilers
Sorry for any spoilers! So we've watched two seasons so far, 1 & 2, and admittedly we watched them in a couple of days, but I'm not going to be watching season 3 for a couple of reasons, most noticeable in season 2. Firstly, the judging is bad, and not because I disagree with their choices necessarily, but because it is never clear what they're judging on. Take the steam punk challenge - To one contestant they're saying, you aren't meeting the challenge; to the next they're saying, I don't care that you didn't meet the challenge, this is a beautiful painting; and to the next they're saying, you met the challenge but it's too true to what we're asking and then voting her out on the strength of that. I really couldn't understand what they were choosing based on, unless it was the judges own tastes - and that's hardly reasonable. Secondly, bullying. I mean, how is making a judge laugh a reasonable challenge anyway, but then the winner did a mean, bullying cartoon of another contestant and that won. Really? Come on now. Not only should that contestant have been reprimanded rather than rewarded, the judge also succeeded in making himself despicable by condoning that behaviour. Way to create role models, hey. You just have to watch Face Off to see how good this show could be - and perhaps it's the contrast between the two shows that leaves me absolutely cold here.

JUDGES ARE OFF BASE!
deenakurdas7 January 2020
While most of the time can see visually why the judges chose the way they do, there are numerous times they make zero sense! These artists are all amazing, and i love watching them create master pieces. The camophalge challenge is my favorite and im am always blown away when i cannot see the model at all. I seriously feel that they choose for other reasons. IN TEAM CHALLENGES...They need to STOP pinning contestants against each other, asking who should win...duh...of course that person is going to say themselves. STOP invoking controversy amoung the players ..... it only satisfies the judges morbidity! If you think it's helping, think again. Also, with Season 3, they are showing the naked model and then transforming them into their painting... I do not care for that at all... stay with how you had it in Season one. NO NEED FOR CHANGES, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE NOT GOOD.

Also, what's up with the weirdo hair do's and stupid costumes of the narrator girl? Please get a newdesigner .. the one you have sucks!

All in all, I am amazed with all of their artwork, I believe it's beautiful and phenomenal.

As for the Judges, first of all, Sorry....RePaul has ZERO KNOWLEDGE of painting and does NOT belong in their at all.

IN Season One, this idiot Cheryl Ann... totally messed up numerous times and these idiot judges kept letting slide thru. Follow. the rules or get out... this stupid Cherly Ann kept breaking the rules, doing what she wanted, and the dam judges let her slide cause painting was good....NOOOOOO.... Follow the rules or go home! These judges are NOT fair and it's frustrating. I may not watch anymore because of them.

From good to bad
stefanmitchell-619519 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Rupaul takes over the show a bit to much in season 3 and attitude against the artist. So the show is getting to be more about Rupaul and who he likes the body art. So from being a show with top marks it hit rock bottom. If you want people around you in a bad mood and to become haters make them watch season 3 and part where contestant Hans leaves the show.

WORST JUDGING except for the baldie who likes CD
ravi-5891519 May 2020
Would have given more stars but the judging part of it stole most of the stars winner good painter but not as good as Dutch and she is a drama queen and there are better painters than her to take the winning place. the final art piece was sooo boring and useless

JUDGES - mindless and focused more on drama than the art which the show was about. biased all the time.

DUTCH - congratulations for ur masterpieces through out the show

Love the concept; hate the judging
americaneagle-3869627 October 2018
The shows concept is a really cool idea. However, the judges make it more about creating drama between the contestants than actually focusing on their artwork.

Fun concept, inane judging
nyssasilvester24 February 2020
Very fun concept for a show. I'm a sucker for reality shows that focus on artistic crafts. What sunk this for me is having RuPaul as a judge. Even if you disagree with Robin and Craig sometimes, they clearly understand the art form and have informed, intelligent things to say about the execution. RuPaul just has favorites and least favorites based on concept or arbitrary preference. This was clearly a huge determinant of winners throughout season 3, especially the final. Drove me crazy.

And don't get me started on the silly guest judges. Here to judge your body painting is... Linda Carter, who played Wonder Woman? Shawn Johnson, Olympic gymnast? Some pop star? The only thing they ever say is "Ooh, look how cool!" Guys, I can do that! Show me people who know what they're talking about.

Thoughts on seasons:

1: Best chemistry between contestants. Friendship between Gear and Natalie was really fun. 2: Wrong season winner, obviously. 3: I guess this has turned into the RuPaul show. Also so much laughter at RuPaul saying, "How dare you disgrace the dignity of this competition!" Lol it's reality TV, take it down a notch.

Robin and Craig very wrong judges
sevdakarababa-7107727 April 2019
I would give this show 8-9 but because of Craig and Robin were terrible judges i gave 1 point. Only nice thing was Ru paul and artists. I like the show i hate the judges. Winners didn't deserve to win at all. Really good ones just eliminated some weird and fake reasons. Probably show canceled because people were angry with their decisions and no one want to watch anymore. I dont even watch my self last season because i dont want to listen judges wrong decisions and dont wanna see wrong winner end of the show. So first 2 season art was good, winners were wrong, judges didnt know how to judge.

One asinine artist!
jmdelong-15 January 2019
Dutch was a talent, but every week his attitude towards the other artists was lousy. After the 5th episode I got tired of Dutch's idiotic comments and stopped watching.

Poor Judging
ckitamora27 June 2019
Though the show has an interesting concept that is fun to watch and get into, the judging ruins the experience. Within the show the judges disregard talent and bring too much emotion into their decision making. Without looking at the painting in front of them unbiased, they put their personal view of the artist over the work itself. It distracts from the fun of the art and expression and sinks the show.

The judges are not professionals
antoniojga10 May 2020
The just don't know how to appreciate the constant, expertise or technics and they pick the winner by feelings instead of their painting.

Unfair dismissals all over the place
jassasingh_matharu8 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The first reason was very good at start and as it goes on it gets annoying with those wrong and unfair eliminations. This didn't stoped in second and third season for instance the worse decision was eliminateing Rio and worse was Winning of Lana in second season.

Competition or Charity show
neo_lane25 October 2016
The idea and concept the this show is stunning seeing some of these amazing artist preform incredible pieces can be awe inspiring at times. So throughout the show competitor are reminded over and over this is a competition you are her to win, some forget that and others stay hard and true. Since the judges keep reminding the cast this you would think they would keep to there word but they don't. Low and behold finishing the 1 season the artist whom I believed should've won who had pure talent was disqualified even after following everything asked of the last challenged and taking what was learned and told told of him to change in his art style and brought out a amazing piece of art, now understand that this artist was always at the top almost every challenge but the judges still rejected this artist in favor of an over a horrible artist who throughout the entire show was in last or almost dropped out and skated along by sheer dumb luck and puffy eyes and didn't even follow the last challenge requirements but put a "what I like" on the canvas. At the end of the day the Artist you showed true talent, dedication and Confidence was denied in favor of someone who kept saying "but I worked real hard" threw some puffy eyes on and throw in some BS emotions and OMG the Judges found there charity.

Unfair judging DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
grzano17 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The artists are great, but they almost always pick the wrong winners. In Season 2 in the last elimination before the finals they picked Avi, Avi's peice was technically poorly constructed. He had highlights on the model where they should not be and the model was clearly visible. Erin's piece was technically better.

I am so disgusted that Lana won the paint off when her model was clearly visible is horrible, many of her other pieces were also poorly executed but she got a pass. These judges are clearly judges with an agenda that is easy to see through. They pick a favorite early on and clearly skew the show unfairly against other worth artists. I could not stomach any more and will not watch the finals or season 3. The only thing the producers got right was not creating season 4.
