Actor Terrence Howard has been ordered by a federal judge to pay nearly $1 million in back taxes, interest, and penalties.
The action comes after Howard allegedly threatened a Justice Department lawyer and claimed that it is “immoral for the United States government to charge taxes to the descendants of slaves.”
He stands accused of ignoring IRS efforts to collect $578,000 in income taxes it says he failed to pay between 2010 and 2019.
Howard was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the film Hustle and Flow, and was the star of the TV hit Empire.
He was sued by the Justice Dept. in 2022 after he reportedly didn’t respond to their requests beyond a voicemail he allegedly left on the phone of the case’s lead tax attorney. In that message, Howard denied owing anything and threatened to post the lawsuit on the internet, thus shaming the attorney.

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

Star Wars continuity is a little more complex than other fictional universes. Whereas properties like Star Trek and The Lord of the Rings cover centuries, the gap between The Phantom Menace and The Rise of Skywalker is just 67 years. Within that time, both the Empire and the First Order rise and fall, there are two massive galaxy-spanning conflicts and practically every piece of canon Star Wars media takes place.
Lucasfilm famously has a dedicated story group devoted to untangling all this, but some things still slip through the cracks. One common problem is that characters who appear in both the original and prequel trilogies don’t acknowledge that they’ve previously met C-3Po and R2-D2. Now, the actual reason is because George Lucas hadn’t planned out the exact details of the prequels in the early 1980s, but that obviously doesn’t apply in-universe.

If social media buzz is any indication, then Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy was one of the biggest hits of the 2020 holiday movie season. With all three films in the franchise streaming on HBO Max and a brand new 4K remaster of the trilogy released on home video, “Lord of the Rings” buzz was booming over the holidays. The trilogy will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its launch in 2021, so don’t expect buzz to die down anytime soon.

The end of a year that has seen television reach a new summit of influence and importance, with the arrival of 2021 on the horizon, provides a moment to look back at the shows that define the medium in the 21st century so far.
To that end, as so many of us have spent months of the coronavirus pandemic locked down in our homes watching the tube, we’ve put together a list of the series that got us here.
If you’re looking for a No. 1 ranking, we suggest looking elsewhere: Our list of influencers is in no particular order. The empirical perquisite is that the show had to have debuted after January 1, 2001. The subjective push behind our selections centers not just on the series, but also the depth and width of its reach.

Martin Scorsese was supposed to begin production on “Killers of the Flower Moon” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in March, but the pandemic pushed the film’s start date by an entire year. With cameras now set to begin rolling in March 2021, Scorsese admits to Empire magazine that he’s struggling to recapture the same spark that made his previous effort, “The Irishman,” such a rewarding experience. And yes, the pandemic is partly to blame.

The trials and tribulations of Cookie Lyon will not be charted in a spinoff of Empire.
Variety has confirmed that Fox has nixed plans for a potential spinoff featuring Taraji P. Henson.
First announced in July when Henson signed a first-look deal, the spinoff would have been a sequel to Empire's events, taking Cookie to Miami to start a new life.
News of the spinoff came months after Fox decided against filming the last-ever episodes of the series after it was shut down due to Covid-19.
The news was a bit of a slap in the face to fans who invested six years in the series, which was once a ratings juggernaut for the network.
At its peak, Empire scaled stratospheric heights, but the series never broke out beyond the U.S., meaning it was difficult to monetize the show internationally.

Empire‘s Cookie has crumbled, unfortunately: A planned spinoff of the hit drama with Taraji P. Henson reprising her role as Cookie is not moving forward at Fox, according to our sister site Variety.

The series would have centered on the next chapter for Henson’s Cookie, following the Empire series finale, which aired in April and capped a six-season run on Fox. Fox is not moving forward with the “Empire” spinoff that would have followed Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie Lyon, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The project, which is backed by “Empire” co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, “follows what’s next for Cookie.” Strong was attached to co-write the script along with Stacy A. Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence, with Sanaa Hamri on board to direct. Executive producers include Daniels, Strong, Littlejohn, Lawrence, Hamri and Henson, along with Brian Grazer and Samie Falvey for Imagine Entertainment.
20th Television will shop the series to other outlets, the individual added.
Henson starred alongside Terrence Howard on all six seasons of Fox’s “Empire,” which aired its pandemic-forced series finale on April 21. That episode was the 18th out of a planned 20 for the drama’s sixth and final season, but production shutdowns made it impossible to complete the final two episodes in time.

Fox has opted not to proceed with a spinoff of its signature drama series Empire that centered on the larger-than-life character of Cookie Lyon, played by Golden Globe winner Taraji P. Henson. Disney TV Studios’ 20th Television, which produces the project with Imagine TV, is currently shopping it to Disney outlets ABC and Hulu, I hear.
The mothership series, created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, ran on Fox for six seasons. A spinoff of such a successful series comes with a high price tag, which is hard for a broadcast network to cover, especially when it is not affiliated with the studio as is the case with Fox and 20th TV, which became separated by the Disney-Fox acquisition toward the end of Empire‘s run.
While Fox brass felt this was not the right show for the network at this time, they are committed to staying in business with the creative collaborators of Empire and the proposed spinoff. The network recently opened a writers room for drama Our Kind of People, from Lee, Karen Gist and 20th TV, with an eye to a series order that appears likely.
20th TV and Imagine TV are currently exploring a potential new home for the Empire spinoff within the Disney TV universe, with ABC and Hulu as primary targets. Strong and Henson are both under deals at 20th TV and both have other projects in various stages of development. Strong is working on series Dopesick for Hulu, starring Michael Keaton and directed by Barry Levinson, which started shooting in Virginia last week. Henson also has a TV series in the works. Outside of her 20th TV deal, she will make her feature directorial debut and star in Two-Faced.

Bron Studios announced Thursday it is producing her directorial debut, “Two-Faced,” a high school comedy that explores racism and culture.
Here’s the official synopsis from the studio: “‘Two-Faced’ follows Joy, a Black high school senior whose chances to attend the college of her dreams are threatened by her wildly popular and charismatic school principal, Jerald, after she confronts him with evidence of his racist past. Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning actress Taraji P. Henson is making her feature directorial debut the Bron Studios’ drama Two-Faced in which she’ll also star.
Two-Faced, written by Cat Wilkins, follows Joy, a Black high school senior whose chances to attend the college of her dreams are threatened by her wildly popular and charismatic school principal, Jerald, after she confronts him with evidence of his racist past. With the help of her friends, Joy sets out to expose Jerald for who he truly is but quickly learns that he is not above waging all-out-war against the students trying to take him down. Henson will play Gina Robinson, Joy’s mother.
Wilkins recently graduated from the Mfa Screenwriting Program at UCLA. Her Two-Faced screenplay won first place in the feature comedy category at the 2020 UCLA Screenwriters Showcase. Henson and her Tph Entertainment will produce with Aaron L. Gilbert on behalf of Bron, Tim Story on behalf of The Story Company and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett. EPs are Wilkins, Christine Conley and Trent Hubbard.
Said Henson: “After two decades spent in front of the camera, I’m thrilled to finally jump behind it for my feature directorial debut! What first attracted me to this project was Joy – she is the character I needed to see in films growing up, but never had. It’s important that stories be told from a woman’s point of view and partnering with Bron Studios and the amazingly talented Tim Story – both who use their platforms to help elevate women and people of color – feels like the perfect match. I can’t wait to bring this hilariously heartfelt script by Cat Wilkins to life!”
Added Gilbert: “Taraji is an important voice in the world and Bron is thrilled to support her directorial debut, of a script from Cat Wilkins, that through its comedic elements examines race and culture in America. We also look forward to working with Taraji’s long-time collaborator Tim Story and the rest of the team behind the film.”
Said Story: “I could not be more excited to support one of the most talented people I have ever known. Taraji and I have done three movies together and I knew it was only a matter of time before she would make this leap to directing and I am honored to produce this film along with Bron Studios. Taraji is like family to me and I cannot wait for everyone to see her directorial vision of this hilarious script by Cat Wilkins brought to the screen.”
Bron Releasing and UTA Independent Film Group will oversee film sales and distribution.
Henson won a Golden Globe in 2016 in the Best Actress TV Series Drama category for her turn on Fox’s Empire. She was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. She’s also a 2017 SAG Ensemble winner for the feature Hidden Figures. Henson directed the 2020 episode “Come Undone” of Empire. Her Executive Producer feature credits include No Good Deed, Proud Mary and What Men Want.
She is represented by M88, UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Lede Company. Wilkins is represented by UTA and Echo Lake Entertainment. Story and The Story Company are repped by UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Collins Jackson Agency.
Ilene Chaiken has signed an overall deal with Universal Television, Variety has confirmed. As part of the deal, Chaiken has joined the upcoming NBC show “Law & Order: Organized Crime” as executive producer and showrunner.
Chaiken takes over showruner duties on the series from Matt Olmstead, who stepped down in October. She is known for creating the hit Showtime series “The L Word,” with Chaiken also serving as an executive producer on the recent reboot “The L Word: Generation Q.” She was also previously the showrunner on the hit Fox music drama “Empire.”
“Law & Order: Organize Crime” was previously scheduled to premiere on NBC in the fall, but it was shifted off the schedule back in August. Sources say it is still on course to air sometime in the 2020-2021 season, which has been heavily disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

In The Forty-Year-Old Version, first-time filmmaker Radha Blank (who also wrote and stars in the movie) plays a fictionalized version of herself. A satire of “the theater world, middle age, New York, the racial and gendered expectations of commercial art,” as K. Exclusive: Alicia Coppola (Empire), Marwan Salama (Lethal Weapon) and Marisela Zumbado (The Affair) are set for recurring roles on HBO Max’s Lena Dunham-produced half-hour dramedy Generation.
Created by Zelda Barnz and her father Daniel Barnz, who also directs, Generation is a dark yet playful half-hour following a group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality (devices and all) tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community.
Coppola plays Carol, the mother of Riley (Chase Sui Wonders) who is terribly uncool, painfully suburban and obsessed with meddling in Riley’s business.
Salama portrays Bo, an under-the-radar high school junior who is direct, utterly unself-conscious and refreshingly comfortable in his own skin.
Zumbado is Lucia, a young junior who is confident, bold and queer and loves to shake things up.
They join an ensemble cast that includes Nathanya Alexander, Chloe East,...

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
From the very beginning, Boba Fett has inspired The Mandalorian. Showrunner Jon Favreau’s “toy box” approach pitched protagonist Din Djarin as a Boba Fett-like figure, and although the two are quite different in terms of personality and history, the iconic silhouette of the space western gunslinger is very similar.
But now Boba Fett himself is back in The Mandalorian season 2, played by none other than Temuera Morrison in a very brief cameo. At the very end of the season 2 premiere “The Marshal,” we find Boba watching from a hill as Mando rides off with his old armor, a scowl on the old bounty hunter’s face that would silence a krayt dragon. With all the Mandalorian history and bounty hunting on the show, it was only a matter of time before we finally got to see Boba in the flesh!
