Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

The removals also includes Arrested Development, which has thrown the future availability of its final season into question. Find the full list below.

Film sets can be dangerous places to work. There are so many moving pieces — actors, crew, cameras, props, sets, stunts — that are often in motion, sometimes simultaneously, that things can too easily go wrong. And on the stunt front, where sequences intentionally put performers in physical danger, situations may get downright deadly.
Thankfully, most sets employ experienced stunt coordinators to make sure everything happens as planned. Ted Sharon, a teacher at the Society of American Fight Directors, explained the role of a stunt coordinator to Backstage. "A qualified stunt coordinator will be able to describe as well as demonstrate, or have an assistant who can execute the sequence," he said. "Good stunt coordinators have a healthy regard for actor safety as well as for the director's vision. They are the guardians of both on set."
Still, no matter how much care is taken to make sure everyone has rehearsed, equipment's been checked,...

Jennifer Lopez received the generation award at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday, June 5. The multihyphenate teared up as she thanked her fans, her manager, and everyone who inspired her film performances over the years.
Lopez said in her acceptance speech, "I look at those movies, and I see all the wonderful people that I've been blessed to know and to work with. You're only as good as the people you work with, and if you're lucky, they make you better. And I have been very lucky in that regard." Lopez said that while she's none of her characters, all her roles have a part of her in them.
"There were times so low, I think I kept going more for you than for myself."
"Since you cannot create truth unless you've really lived it, I have a different kind of list of thank-yous tonight," she said. "I want...

Every year, Super Bowl weekend vies with post-Labor Day and early December for theaters’ rock bottom. This weekend was unusual with three wide releases, at least two aimed at Valentine’s Day-adjacent viewership. That took the box office to $52 million; between 2016-2020, this weekend ranged between $73 million-$100 million.
“Death on the Nile” (Disney), Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie adaptation, took #1 with $12.8 million. “Marry Me” (Universal), also streaming on Peacock, managed only $8 million for third despite proven rom-com draw Jennifer Lopez in the lead.
The biggest villain is how recent releases lack any accumulative impact. This weekend, they accounted for $28 million; in 2020, against the Super Bowl and two weekends before Valentines Day, they managed $70 million. Valentines Day weekend that year brought in $156 million.
Things will get better with “Uncharted” (Sony) next weekend, followed by “The Batman” (Warner Bros.) March 4. The latest D.C. Comics entry will likely cross $100 million on opening weekend.

Starring Judy Garland, the film plays host to numerous classic songs including its title ditty, 'The Trolley Song,' and 'The Boy Next Door,' but out of all the gems that make up its score, no song has had more impact than, 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.'...

Obsession is the marrow of erotic thrillers, from the sublime (“Fatal Attraction”) to the ridiculous (“Obsessed”), the hey-not-so-bad (“Sleeping with the Enemy”) to the very-bad-indeed (“The Boy Next Door”), to the auteur-crafted (Tyler Perry’s “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”) to the Netflix-knockoff (“Fatal Affair”). This sub-genre is so abundant that in “Fatale,” its latest victim (an appropriately jittery Michael Ealy) once played the unhinged baddie in another film about physical intimacy gone very much awry (“The Perfect Guy”).
That said, despite the ample availability of films that are built on the concept of “guilty pleasures” and delight in unspooling wacky-crazy, sex-mad, unhinged freakfests, the telling of their stories can contain all the freshness of data entry. We have someone attractive who’s blessed with an equally attractive spouse, a good job, a lovely home, maybe some cute kids, and then they to decide to bone someone they...

Jennifer Lopez’s latest movies have at least one thing in common: They’re all directed by women. The slate includes 2019’s “Hustlers,” directed by Lorene Scafaria, which grossed $157 million worldwide; next year’s “Marry Me” (from Kat Coiro), in which Lopez plays a pop star navigating a bad breakup with her famous fiancé (Maluma); and the upcoming drug-lord drama “The Godmother” (Reed Morano), in which Lopez portrays the title character.
In addition to starring in all these movies, Lopez produced them through her company, Nuyorican Prods., which she runs with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, her former agent (who famously negotiated Lopez’s then-record-breaking $9 million salary for a Latina actress on 2001’s “The Wedding Planner”).
In a Zoom conversation for Variety’s Power of Women issue, presented by Lifetime, CEO Lopez and company president Goldsmith-Thomas spoke about their work as producers, starting with 2002’s “Maid in Manhattan.”

After last week’s offbeat slate of home media releases, things are back on track this Tuesday, with a wildly eclectic assortment of titles headed home just in time for the Halloween season. If somehow you haven’t been adding any of the Blumhouse movies to your home collections over the years, you can now play catch-up rather easily with their Blumhouse of Horrors: 10-Movie Collection. Vinegar Syndrome is once again doing the dark lord’s work with their releases of Pandemonium and The Caller, and Severin Films is showing some love to both Cruel Jaws and Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, too.
Scream Factory has put together a brand new collector’s edition Blu-ray for Ghost Ship that arrives this week, and if you’re someone who digs on “banana pants” cinematic experiences, you’ll definitely want to pick up Agfa’s Blu-ray for Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things.

Blumhouse is a name that, most of the time, can be assured to provide you with a decent viewing experience. Assortments of their output have been released before, but on September 29th will come Blumhouse of Horrors, the largest collection to date consisting of ten of the biggest hits of their relatively extensive catalogue of productions.
So you know what you’re getting and in case you’re unfamiliar with any of them, here’s a brief rundown of what you can expect:
Get Out is Jordan Peele’s directorial debut following a young African-American man meeting the rich family of his white girlfriend, where things become increasingly sinister. Happy Death Day follows a sorority girl who becomes stuck in a time loop and must discover who keeps killing her if she wants to escape. The Purge is a home invasion movie set on the one night of the year...

As Alanis Morrissette once sang: It's a little too ironic. On the very same day Jennifer Lopez was rudely snubbed by the Oscars, failing to earn a nomination for arguably the best performance of her career in 2019's Hustlers, one of the superstar's other—less well-received—films is celebrating its five-year anniversary. Made for just $4 million, the low-budget thriller told a pretty simple story. J.Lo plays Claire, a sad recently separated-but-still-bangin'-hot mom whose affair with her teen son's new best friend, played by Ryan Guzman, quickly goes from steamy to creepy when he becomes obsessed with her. But The Boy Next Door quickly became a must-see after the first trailer came...

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

We loved him in Pretty Little Liars and The Boy Next Door. Everything about this handsome actor keeps us coming back for more. Naturally, we got curious about him and had to know more. At tonight’s Deadline New Hollywood Panel at the Toronto Film Festival for the upcoming Jennifer Lopez feature Hustlers, the pic’s producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas gave high praise to Stx for finally making the edgy pic about the New York Scores strippers who turn the tables on their greedy Wall Street clients.
“Here we have a movie that was written and directed by this ferocious, fearless, beautiful woman [Lorene Scafaria] about ferocious, fearless beautiful women all who are complicated, and we’re pitching to primarily white men,” said Goldsmith-Thomas.
“The note [another studio] gave us was: ‘It’s great, could they drug the bad guys? Ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy this new episode of The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we examine movies from established movie stars that have flopped at the box office, been forgotten by time, or remain hidden gems. These aren’t the films that made them famous or kept them famous. These are the other ones.

Sony’s English-language remake of the 2011 Gerardo Naranjo movie Miss Bala began previews Thursday night grossing $650,000 at 2,050 theaters in what is expected to be a low and slow Super Bowl weekend at the box office.
Miss Bala is the only wide release this weekend, expected to draw $7M-$10M in a frame where Universal/Bvi/Blumhouse’s Glass in its third weekend is expected to excel with $11.3M. Through yesterday, the M. Night Shyamalan pic counts $79.1M through two weeks, running 6% behind the director’s Split from two years ago.
While business will drop anywhere from 60%-75% from Saturday to Super Bowl Sunday for most non-family movies, the weekend has improved significantly for male-oriented pics like 2009’s Taken ($24.7M) or American Sniper, which in 2015 made $30.6M over the Big Game weekend, the pic’s sixth frame. People do go to the movies over Super Bowl weekend, and plan their moviegoing on Friday or Saturday.

Say what you will about Jennifer Lopez, but one thing is true: She takes risks. Never sticking to a particular type, she has run the gamut in her choice of films from romantic comedies to thrillers to biopics and beyond. “Second Act” is her first live-action film since 2015’s “The Boy Next Door,” and it feels like a confused puppy, caught between a stale script and a very confused storyline that frequently loses focus.
