"What We" contains a lot of emotional moments and the impact is felt, in this brilliantly written and acted episode, Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira are spectacular
Holt34418 March 2024
"What We" is the fourth episode which follows Rick and Michonne after she throws them off a helicopter into the ocean. With the episode's premise: Rick and Michonne try to find the love they had. You know this episode is all about these characters, it extends beyond the writing and acting, thanks to the visual storytelling which the director and cinematographer succeeds with in this episode, making it grounded and character driven. The screenplay and writing is excellent, realistic and just heartful. The first fifteen minutes or so is simply these two characters, talking, arguing and acting like three dimensional characters who have both changed a lot with Rick Grimes having changed the most. Then the episode goes into a more action driven route with some great sequences of suspenseful zombie scenes with tension through these two characters, before going back to a slower pacing. The pacing is perfect and it remains character driven from start to finish, about these two characters. Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira.

This week's episode of TWD: The Ones Who Live "What We" was directed by Michael Slovis and written by Danai Gurira, the direction and visual storytelling were excellent, and with the writing I had looked forward to Danai's script as it had been hyped for a long time. The screenplay for "What We" was incredible! Back to the direction and visual storytelling, Michael Slovis who has directed the previous episode, handles every scene with perfection and makes sure there are brilliant shots as well as the actors are doing their finest work, which they are. Andrew Lincoln pulls an award worthy performance in this episode, so raw and emotional. Danai Gurira is also terrific in this episode, if it wouldn't be how heavy the episode and the screenplay leans into making Rick more hopeful, I would say her performance would be as great! The screenplay, written by Danai herself, focuses on this duo and the amount of character development which came out of this episode just shows how talented she is at writing dialogue and set pieces. When dialogue is written by someone who knows these two characters, it can't be bad, it can only be good and in this case quite great.

The production design and art direction is terrific, so is the mise-en-scene and cinematography for the show. The musical score is something I haven't commented about but it's spectacular. The increased budget makes for better production design and visual effects, overall making a better show in every department along with the actors. The prior episodes were high budget with some terrific visuals to meet our expectations of the CRM, this episode has solely two characters whom have interacted but not as much as we would want, thus not breaking the immersion with the story the writers are trying to tell. It's in this episode which Michonne opens up to Rick, information which needed the right moment and I'm so glad they did it this way. Totally the right way. In the previous episode we got information from the art guy (who makes the pictures on the phone) how Rick had forgotten what Carl looked like and that is so realistic. With everything Rick had been through, all the trauma suffered, he had forgotten what his son looked like. That's heartbreaking to hear and in this episode he tells her that, it's brilliantly written and acted with perfection. Yet, it got a little bit repetitive because of the same sets, that's my small criticism. This episode contains some of the best acting and writing in the show, yet it's so small compared to other episodes, but it still has everything you love with The Walking Dead. It's hard to rate though, but for a show about these two beloved characters, this episode was done brilliantly.

Doppelganger Rick

Excellent acting. Great story about love, coming home, and finding your way back. Rick Grimes has lost his way, but behind a good man is a good woman. Michonne and love will lead him back. This series/spinoff has all the right elements so far, every episode thus far has been very good. I don't know which one is my favorite spinoff series yet, this one or The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon. Its hard to choose, but i am invested. Would love to see a spinoff of Rick's daughter Judith and Spinoff of Rick and Michonnes son RJ. Producer's I hope you are listening to your loyal fan base and viewers of this phenomenal series.

Last night's episode was Great, but..

Warning: Spoilers
But are we going to buy that this building was unstable for the day + night + 2nd day the spent in that room. And then when they leave that's when the entire building collapses? Are we going to buy that they would spend a night in that building voluntarily? Eventhough tensions were high and needed to be resolved right where they were. It also didn't think that we got a great explanation how Michonne knew exactly where this luxurious appartment was located. And she seemed to have access to it.

Otherwise I thought it was a great episode with great depth, that even on The Walking Dead we haden't seen before. I did questions Andrew Lincoln's accent at times. But it's been years, so I can totally buy into the fact that it could be different.

Unlike anything we've seen on The Walking Dead before

Warning: Spoilers
What We is a riveting masterclass in acting, giving us powerful performances by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. It explores the psychology aspect of things, and is one of the deepest episodes of TV I've seen, bottling it up in one location, and allowing us to really soak in and absorb the moment. It's like you're in there, in any given space, and it could be with you, me, or any couple, and it's relatability in spades. You observe the conflict, and it just gets so real. The feeling of having lost someone, or not recognizing a loved one is devastating and terrible to live with. You feel like a knot is crushing your gut, and you think as there is no way out, no light at the end of the issue. Truth is, when there is a will, there is a way out. A way to break in, to deal with the new state of things. Because, yes, things have changed. Rick has changed. There are events that occured and you can't control that. These things are out of your reach. But what you can do is focus on what you can change, and work as a duo. It truly moves the audience, as it just feels more hopeless by the minute. And then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope. Rick steps out the door. Beautiful.

Phenomenal acting

Warning: Spoilers
It's hard to say this is the best episode yet with the other 3 being so amazing as well but it probably is my favorite. The acting from both Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira is the so good I felt everything emotion that they were feeling while I watched. The flashback of Carl was great and it was awesome to see him again even if it was only for a couple seconds. I could really feel Rick's pain while he described how much he has lost and loved how Michonne made him realize if he stayed they would lose the time that they still could have with each other. This series really has it all from the movie like quality and action to great acting every single episode from all involved.

The Best Episode YET?
agentsofsword17 March 2024
This may not be the general's favorite episode but so far it is mine. Danai Gurira brought back what the other walking dead shows was missing. It was the heart and soul of the characters and this episode was purely dialogue and I LOVED every single moment of it. Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira gave us a powerful performance that this franchise has ever seen.

It is genuinely one of the deepest and best written episodes of The Walking Dead. Rick is not the man he used to be and that creates such an intriguing conflict between the characters. The actors are able to bring the emotions and make you really feel them in every single scene. You can feel Michonne's frustration and also understand Rick's state it really was a rollercoaster of emotions.

Not only Danai can perform she can also produce, write, and be one of the creators one of the show. I'm glad she and Andrew took control of how they're going to take these characters who they've known and understand for years into a different level that we haven't seen before.

"What we" brings back the glory of the walking dead
mrinalbaldev17 March 2024
The romance is real, the emotions are surfaced, this is the walking dead I want , this is the walking dead I love , these are the characters I fell in love with, this is the show I'd watch to feel something anything , and it's back "What we" brings it back , all of it. Mark my words this is one of the best episode to be ever televised in the history of television EVER. Long live the brave man. I cannot believe what's to come after this , this kept me hooked to my seats till the very end , I didn't want this episode to end , because I knew what would happen if it were to end , eternal sadness and waiting for the next episode. I just , I can't anymore. This is probably one of the only times when I've supported AMC for actually doing and making something that matters. Thank you Andy, Danai , Scott.

Amazing Episode
kekewestberry17 March 2024
Wow, I am at loss for words. Danai did an amazing job with the writing, she really dug deep into the emotion arcs of Rick and Michonne, I can understand both of their perspectives and it just left me torn and had me on this emotional rollercoaster, some parts were funny too. Danai is an accomplished writer she can balance humor and seriousness well after seeing this episode I am looking forward to more of the projects she writes and produces. Give her and Andy all the awards, these two deserve them and more especially Danai because wow. One of the best episodes in Walking Dead History, Awesome job👏

This is what we needed
TheWalkingUnknown17 March 2024
Both Andrew Lincoln as Rick and Danai Gurira as Michonne stood on their heads to give us some of the best, if not their best acting of any episode of not only The Ones Who Live itself, but The Walking Dead as a whole.

This touching episode gave the main characters the depth that this series needed. For the first time in a long time, I don't care that an episode from the TWD universe had a slow pace, because they used it to their advantage.

I'm glad that the focus was only on Rick and Michonne, because in the end, it's about them. I'm glad that we're not trying to expand the universe by force here, giving the other characters "equal" opportunities relative to screen time. They don't get it, because they should appear only when they are necessary, as they are only background and complement the picture depicting a couple in love with each other, the heart of this universe.

My rating for the episode is actually 9/10, but I add +1 for the fact that this episode hits differently by the fact that Danai Gurira wrote it. She wrote, she directed, she played a role.... This episode was based on dialogue and you have to admit, Danai can write dialogue, oh she can.

And now... please let Jadis off the leash, let her catch them at any cost ;).

Epic Episode
missserenity_cf2117 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This was by far the best episode in the entire TWD universe dare I say in television. The writing by the great Danai Gurira was so poetic it ebbs and flows with such fluidity. The wave of emotions it illicits and beyond what I've seen in television is maybe forever. Danai uncanny ability to write and bring to life on screen just what it is Rick and Michonne was feeling. The height of each emotion pulling you end and almost drowning you. There were several times I needed to pause and take break because when Michonne cried I too cried and when Rick broke I broke. When Michonne as angry I too felt anger. The the beautiful of this episode was how Andy and Danai delivers each emotion in such a visceral way that the viewer feels as if they have a front row seat to this epic saga of love, lost and hope.

Sweet Jesus did I cry.

Warning: Spoilers
We all know the bad seasons of The Walking Dead. I remained a loyal fan just because there wasn't much else good on tv at the time. But the acting was never the issue. Ever. This episode proves that. When Rick broke in this episode talking about Carl, I a grown man bawled like a baby.

What a masterclass in acting, and especially the writing from Danai. And to see them both finally start to head home while killing walkers in the hallway made me smile so big. Even after 7 years apart they just know what to do.

Props to the funny bickering banter they had. "YOURE SUPPOSED TO HUG THE WALL" "I KNOW THAT."

Drag
buddybradley-2266521 March 2024
This episode just dragged along. The point was made in the first 12 minutes. Then they repeated it for another hour. Every episode gets a little slower and less fulfilling. Soon it will be just a still picture with short bits of repeating dialog. They're not really telling a story, they're just filling time. It's too bad. The people putting the show now should go back and look at the first three or four years of The Walking Dead. They had tension. Anxiety, and desperation that drew the viewer in and made every episode memorable. Now all the various Deads are just opportunities for the actors to perform monologs. The shows can completely described in a few sentences because almost nothing happens. "Rick and Michonne get a lucky break and spend and hour talking about leaving the CRM."

I love the story
gtdbndxmh17 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"The Walking Dead" has unequivocally etched its name into the annals of television history, not just as a standout in the horror genre but as a groundbreaking series that redefined character-driven narratives within a post-apocalyptic canvas. As a seminal work that debuted in 2010 and spanned over a decade, this AMC juggernaut did more than just adapt Robert Kirkman's lauded comic series; it brought to life a vivid, harrowing, and deeply human story of survival, loss, and resilience.

At its core, "The Walking Dead" is a story about humanity at the edge of extinction. The series begins with Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes waking from a coma to find the world overrun by zombies, referred to as "walkers." What unfolds is not just a fight for survival but a profound exploration of what it means to retain humanity in the face of utter despair. The genius of the show lies in its ability to oscillate between moments of intense, gripping horror and deep, introspective drama, making it a compelling watch for a diverse audience.

The character development in "The Walking Dead" is unparalleled. Each character is meticulously crafted, with backstories and arcs that offer a deep dive into their psyche, making their choices and fates all the more impactful. Characters like Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Carol become not just survivors but emblematic of different facets of human resilience and vulnerability. Their journeys are fraught with losses that are palpable, shaping them in ways that are both inspiring and heart-wrenching.

What sets "The Walking Dead" apart is its boldness in storytelling. The series never shies away from the grim realities of its world. Major characters face mortal peril, creating a genuine sense of suspense and unpredictability. This willingness to take risks adds a layer of authenticity and stakes that many shows fail to achieve, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats season after season.

The thematic depth of "The Walking Dead" is another of its strengths. It delves into the morality of survival, the constructs of society and leadership, and the cost of humanity. The walkers, while a constant threat, often take a backseat to the human antagonists and the conflicts within the group, underscoring the idea that the greatest danger in a post-apocalyptic world is not the undead but humanity itself. This exploration of human nature and morality is thought-provoking, challenging viewers to ponder what they would do in the characters' shoes.

Technically, the show is a marvel. The production values of "The Walking Dead" are consistently high, with makeup and effects that bring the walkers to life in a grotesquely beautiful manner. The show's use of practical effects over CGI wherever possible adds to the realism and horror of the walkers. Cinematography and music score work in tandem to create an atmosphere that is both eerie and evocative, further immersing viewers into its post-apocalyptic world.

The impact of "The Walking Dead"

I was one of many who stopped watching
marcborkowski18 March 2024
After the horrible seventh and eighth seasons of the original Walking Dead series the last three seasons were a massive improvement. Dead City and Daryl Dixon spin offs were incredible. The Ones Who Live has been surprisingly flawless so far and could be in the running for the best show of the year if you care about awards. You can tell that this franchise was clearly revitalized long ago and shouldn't be overhated over a few I'll admit really bad seasons. I cannot speak for Fear the Walking Dead because I've watched very few episodes. It seems like beating a dead horse actually worked in this instance 😂.

OH BOY I CRIED! I REALLY CRIED MAN!! THEY JUST MADE ME CRY AGAIN!!!
fakram1718 March 2024
Remember those peak old days when Walking Dead use to be a literal emotion for all of us. Oh boy this was ×10 of that. It made me cry, just like Sophia coming out of that barn made me cry. Just like Hershel dying made my cry. Just like Negan smashing Glenn's head made me cry. And yes of course Just like every time Daryl cries, it makes us cry too. This was peak #TWD.

Oh Rick & Michonne (Andy Lincoln & Danai Gurira) you're crazy crazy actor's. You both are just so much powerful together that it makes me say hell yeah.

This is the best episode of an already great season. My God this was epic....

I don't write reviews neither do i know how to write one so yes this is for my favourite show on the planet. Thank you The Walking Dead....

It's Emmy Time
fjjxvwk18 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
If this show doesn't so much as get a nomination when the Emmys have no credibility. It's no secret that TV seems to be in a lull since the strike and trying to get its groove back but let's face it, no one is doing it like Andy and Danai. Each episode gets better and better but having Danai write this one gave this episode an edge. An actress that in tune with her character and of her love interest that can write so well made this one of the best TWD episodes of all time. The pacing was perfect and so much ground was covered in such a short amount of time. I feel like we finally got some of the Rick we knew back and Andrew Lincoln as usual knocked it out the park. You will laugh, cry and rejoice. Well done!

Andrew and Danai are incredible!
connorgallagher-2710517 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Andrew and Danai's performances in this episode are incredible and they should get all of the awards for their performances these last 4 episodes.

Rick finally has to make a decision: to go back to the CRM or to go back home with Michonne? This episode got me in the feels with the callbacks to Carl once again.

Rick has stayed alive because of the dreams he has had about Carl and Michonne - I really hope Rick and Michonne have a happy ending as they deserve it so much! I can't believe we only have two episodes left, this show has been remarkable and I'm excited to see how their story will end. They made a very good decision turning this into a TV show instead of the 3 films they had planned.

Warning: Spoilers
I've waited my entire life to watch a TV show put this much care and consideration into its characters' relationship. What an exceptional episode of an exceptional show. I want to watch it on repeat - the dialogue/script from Danai, the acting from both Danai and Andy, the music, effects, lighting, all of it. It's like my new favorite movie. The standout moment is Rick's panic attack followed by his traumatic confession as the building crumbled. It was this beautiful blend of realism and symbolism.

I laughed, I cried. I immediately hit replay. I'm so thankful for this series and these characters and this message of the power of profound love. This episode will stick with me forever.

Fantastic Episode! Brought Tears to my eyes
milanurlich18 March 2024
This Episode was fantastic, emotional, real, exciting, I have been a fan of the show for many years but there has never been an episode which has pulled on my heart strings such as the episode tonight

The Acting from Danai and Andrew might be some of the best the show has seen to date! The raw emotion that Rick and Michonne had made me feel as if I was there and had a personal connection to the story! Characters I have watched since 2011 brought up again dead or alive hit home for me. So excited for what's to come and I can only hope that the story will continue after this season as the walking dead universe cannot exist without these two!

Fantastic Episode.

This episode is the best episode of the towl so far because it symbolizes a relationship against Rick and Michonne, the writing is very good, the dialogues is the one of the most important dialogues in twd history, the action was good and the buildup is awesome and it was not boring and actually most enjoyable towl episode I ever watched, don't listen to the haters that give 1 stars just because they think it's trash, but it's one of the best episodes in towl or potentially top 5 episodes in the entire walking dead and the ending was awesome for the next episode and overall this episode is one of the best pieces of media I ever seen.

Not trying to drag the show unfairly....
RSO_Media18 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the first two episodes, and the third was pretty good, but this episode dropped the ball. It starts off good. The arguing and debating back and forth between Rick and Michonne was believable, but once they begin to reconcile, it felt like I was watching a parody of a therapy session. I'm not averse to Rick showing emotions. One of the best scenes in the original show is when he breaks down after Lori dies, amongst several other notable meltdowns, but this just felt gratuitous. This whole sequence just seemed bizarre, sappy and uncharacteristic, for both characters really.

Call me callous, but it just didn't work for me. I can see Rick delivering some of this dialogue with his thousand-yard stare, but not desperately weeping and pleading the same way he was when he's begging Negan not to make him cut his son's hand off. It just doesn't fit the situation. Narratively, I think the show's still on solid footing, but I think the latter half of this episode was a big miss on the human drama and characterizations.

Greatest Walking Dead Episode of All Time
nooapatjas18 March 2024
Whereas the last episode brought the show back to form in terms of compelling action and thrills, this one brought back the meat of what truly made the original series such a compelling journey in its original few seasons: the drama between people.

What We exemplifies what TWOL is about and does it without missing a beat: a story about two people who love each other over anything, truly.

With incredible dialogue from start to finish and each scene making my heart throb.

Incredible cinematography as well.

Finally getting to see Rick truly open up and become whole again THROUGH love...

I was hard on the series at first. This episode however, will from now on be the golden standard, and it's what finally makes this series its own complete piece of art, no longer needing comparisons to the original series. A perfect blossoming 10/10.

Best Episode Yet
InfamousText19 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So after the first episode which was amazing, episodes 2 and 3 kind of went downhill in my opinion and the quality was gradually dropping. But this episode brought it right back to the quality of episode one, and I would argue even better.

This episode from start to finish is phenomenally acted and written. The conflict as a whole is done really well to where neither michonne or rick are objectively correct, you can really see both sides and understand both of their arguments. I also really liked how their conflict wasn't instantly resolved and was given time to really build up over the first few episodes. During the scene where Rick breaks down and talks about Carl, you can really feel the depression and the sadness radiating off of him; it was done very well.

Overall, this is easily the best episode of the show for far in my opinion, and Danai Gurira should definitely be given the chance to direct more in the future. She did a great job with this episode.

Emotionel episode
magnusthegamer17 March 2024
Episode 4, "What we" this episode is the slowest of the episodes up until this point and that is by no means bad it's just an episode that explores the relationship between Rick and michonne it's definitely the most emotional episode of the season, it does have some awesome action sequences. This episode is definitely setting up for 2 explosive last episodes and I think this season is gonna end with one hell of a bang. Awesome episode, good to see the series take some time to explore both Rick and michonne, the only thing we haven't really gotten in the show, and thats freaking awesome, i cant stop saying this but the ones who live is some of the best twd we have ever gotten.

Perfection
kdwilliams77917 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Danai's writing gave us an entire range of emotions in one episode. Rick and Michonne have always had deep conversations, but this one was especially good because she has to break through a wall and trauma built up for 7 years by the CRM.

One thing I would have changed was his reaction to finding out he has a son. I would have loved to see break down at news, but it felt like they glossed over the emotional reaction to this news.

They made you forget for a moment they were in a life or death situation when they were talking through the dangers of going home and when she explained how they looked for him, the incident when the kids were kidnapped, etc..

The dialogue was beautiful, the acting was amazing, the direction was great and the cinematography beautiful. Everything was top tier.
