There are holes in the ground. Police are looking into them

Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts with Detective Murdoch and Dr Ogden walking along a street in downtown Toronto. Suddenly the ground starts to shake. It is an earthquake. When Constable Crabtree appears on the scene, detective Murdoch asks him if he is alright, but Crabtree has no idea what Murdoch is talking about. Soon after this the alarm is raised at a local jeweller's shop which has been burgled. The unusual feature of this robbery is that the thieves broke in from below. They have made off with a large haul of diamonds.

Crabtree has some expertise in digging tunnels, so Detective Murdoch sets him to following the tunnel to discover where the robbers came from. After several feet, Crabtree tells Murdoch that there is no tunnel, just loose earth. Murdoch examines the hole in the jeweller's, and concludes that the robbers used a tunnelling machine to gain access to the shop.

Meanwhile at the Ontario Provincial Museum, Elva Gordon, who has just returned from an expedition to explore caves in Yucatan, is giving a lecture. She has been told that she must moderate what she says, but she will not have this, and goes ahead with her plan to talk about her theory that there are people living deep underground. In the audience are Dr. Grace and Dr. Ogden; Dr Grace finds the theory of a hollow earth implausible, but Dr. Ogden thinks the whole idea is amazing. Both of the doctors are impressed with the way Miss Gordon presents herself, especially her short hair, which they find very daring, but she explains that the rigours of her pursuit of exploration demand short hair.

There is a further break in at another jeweller's, and again diamonds are stolen. Once more the burglars broke in from below. Again it seems the robbers used a tunnelling machine to break in. In a flash of inspiration, Detective Murdoch decides to use a series of seismographs to track the movement of the tunnelling machine. There is a bank raid once again with the burglars entering from below. The only thing taken from the bank vault is diamonds from safe deposit boxes.

Constable Crabtree is convinced that there are mole people stealing the diamonds, and he goes to see Miss Gordon to discuss his theories with her. She, however, is not convinced. A break-in at a laboratory, where more diamonds are stolen, only serves to confirm Crabtree's ideas in his own mind.

Who is committing these crimes, and how can Murdoch predict where the next crime is to be, so that he can catch the criminals in the act?

Once again this is an episode with great comedy in it, and for Murdoch it is a tantalisingly difficult case.
