★★☆☆☆ Writer-director Corinna McFarlane's The Silent Storm is anything but silent. Or nuanced. Or subtle. Set on a remote, nondescript island off the coast of Scotland in the late 1940s, it is a raucous, disjointed cacophony of marital disharmony, community disintegration and tyrannical piety. A gifted British cast, comprising Damian Lewis, Andrea Riseborough and the briefest of Kate Dickie cameos, do not give performances worthy of their standing but are nonetheless hampered by loose, uncertain direction that lacks purpose or clarity. An encouraging turn from newcomer Ross Anderson is the only saving grace here.

"We each have our duties in this life..." A trailer has debuted online for an indie drama called The Silent Storm, set on a remote Scottish island telling the story of a marriage falling apart helped by the arrival of a troubled young boy. Damian Lewis stars as a local minister and Andrea Riseborough plays his wife. This actually first premiered at the London Film Festival back in 2014 and hasn't played at any other fests since then, with the distributor holding onto it for a while. Is it worth the wait? I'm not sure. The full cast includes Ross Anderson, Kate Dickie, Eric Robertson, and John Sessions. This actually looks solid, with some great cinematography and a strong story of love and chaos. Might be worth catching? Take a look. Here's the official trailer for Corinna McFarlane's The Silent Storm, found on YouTube (via The Playlist): On a wild and remote Scottish island,...

Premiering two years ago at the London Film Festival, "The Silent Storm" has been on the shelf since, not screening at any other festivals, nor drawing any kind of buzz. But just like that, the movie is gearing up to open overseas, and now we can take a peek at the drama featuring Damian Lewis and Andrea Riseborough. Read More: Shelved Movies: 18 Films With Delayed Releases Written and directed by Corinna McFarlane, the story is set on a remote Scottish island where a troubled teen is sent to live with a pastor and his wife, upturning their ascetic life. It's definitely not the sexiest of material, which may be why it's taken so long to find the big screen, but it does look to feature two strong turns at the center of the movie. Here's the official synopsis: On a wild and remote Scottish island, the respected local minister, Balor,...

Joining Morley as a distinctive new British female filmmaking voice is Corinna McFarlane, whose full-blooded romantic drama "The Silent Storm" will also premiere at the BFI Lff. Titbits from the history of censorship, another British director in need of a location, and business as usual for Bond
Sex, violence and cakes
The British Board of Film Classification has had a busy week. The day before launching its annual report, the BBFC met the Critics' Circle to celebrate both bodies' centenary years with a presentation and lunch at the Cinema Museum in south London. Senior examiner, historian and dry wit Craig Lapper took critics through a brief history of the relationship between the two organisations. Over the years, and in just about equal measure, critics have either chided the BBFC for being too liberal or too draconian. The censors' original 43 "grounds for deletion" list from 1916 included several amusingly old-fashioned points, including scenes of "vitriol throwing", "scenes laid in disorderly houses", "vulgar accessories in the staging", "indecorous dancing" and scenes likely to "bring into disrepute British prestige in the Empire". Politics,...

Now that's a clean shave! Damian Lewis has ditched his famous ginger locks for, well, no hair at all. Bald move, Mr. Lewis. Homeland star Damian Lewis -- who plays patriot-turned-terrorist Nicholas Brody on the hit Showtime series -- has shed his trademark red hair in favor of a clean-shaven dome for his role in the upcoming movie The Silent Storm. Damian Lewis showed off a totally different look today when he hit the set of The Silent Storm in Scotland. He was sporting a bald head for the cameras after showing off his signature red locks at Glamour's Women of the Year Awards in London earlier this month. Production got under way on Damian's latest project on the Isle of Mull over the weekend, and the love story will see him working alongside Oblivion's Andrea Riseborough while he's in between seasons of Homeland. His Showtime hit is coming back this Fall, but pictures from the season three Homeland set haven't revealed Damian's character. His costar Claire Danes is front and center in the dramatic snaps, though, leaving fans to wonder what is going on with Carrie Mathison.

M vs Moneypenny
Next year's race for the actress Oscars is already taking tasty shape after Cannes. It should be a battle of the Princesses as we see Cannes juror Nicole Kidman in Grace of Monaco go toe-to-toe with Naomi Watts in a film now, finally and officially, named Diana. But there could be another twist as two Bond girls enter the fray. Dame Judi Dench, who was M in the Bond movies, must be a cert for Philomena, the British road movie written by and co-starring Steve Coogan, for which Harvey Weinstein parted with $6m after seeing just a seven-minute showreel at Cannes, clearly scenting a movie that will swell his Oscar cabinet.
