I should’ve guessed I was in for something sadistic with Pneumata when the first enemy exploded.
Pneumata is a throwback to an earlier period of survival horror. It’s cramped, filthy, and dark, with a real sense of decay and unease baked into the environment, and finding a box of bullets is like a gold strike.
I figured I knew the deal, so when a big twisted mutant burst out of a bathroom stall at me, I pulled out a baseball bat and took its head off. It dropped, but I hadn’t noticed the big, conspicuous blister on its back.
Once the mutant died, that blister exploded hard enough to knock off a few points of my health. The next thing I knew, I was backpedaling and screaming as a spider the size of a housecat tried to gnaw my character’s ankles off.
By the way, if...

Manhunt and Outlast are probably some of the first names that come to your mind when asked about the most disturbing games you’ve encountered. And if you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to horror games, think again.
If you’re looking for some titles that’ll not only give you a scare but truly shake your very foundation with their disturbing content, these five titles will haunt your dreams long after you’ve put down the controller. Some of these games contain potentially triggering content, so proceed with caution.

Survival horror games have a certain inclination to things that may leave you disturbed, terrified, and sometimes, even wanting more. Deadbolt Interactive’s Pneumata makes note of all of these, and crafts many of these experiences right.
In my playthrough of the game’s preview copy, I found myself being ‘extra-careful’ around the game’s hideous corridors and pathways, feeling horrified at the thought of a jumpscare around every other corner. Pneumata’s incredible atmosphere reminded me of the times when games like Outlast and Amnesia messed with my heart rate.
While Pneumata tries to juggle a lot of things – puzzles, weapons, enemy types, and story; it often misses the little details that make many survival horror games so rich in environmental design. Janky controls and mismatched animations often got in the way of my experience, but never truly took away the enjoyment of it all.

There are a few characters in movies that are so popular, like Alien, first introduced in the 1979 Ridley Scott movie. This creature, known as Xenomorph, has appeared in several movies and many games throughout the years. 20th Century Studios recently revealed the trailer for Alien: Romulus, the new entry in this legendary franchise.
Federico Álvarez, the director of the Evil Dead remake, will direct this film, which will release in August of this year with a whole new cast. These are five games that match the movie’s atmosphere.

Ridley Scott’s original universe serves as the basis for an incredible number of games based on the popular character Alien. Generic movie titles like Alien Infestation, Alien vs. Predator (1993), and many more.

Content Warning is the latest sensation in the first-person horror genre community, and it truly lives up to its name. Well, at least based on a viral clip that’s been going around recently. The first-person goofy horror game has been trending lately, and a lot of players are diving into it to check out the hype.
A video shared by user sammiMatrix on X may disclose some content that’s literally an example of ‘Content Warning‘ and should not be seen with kids around. That being said, it’s a little part of an overall experience that’s curated by jumpscares, shared quests, and more.

First-person horror (both survival and straight-up), has had something of a comeback lately, and the market is saturated with top-quality examples, like MADiSON, Outlast, and Amnesia, among many, many others. If nothing else, this makes it difficult to catch my eye and stand out in the world of horror these days.
That’s why when Reveil was originally announced, trailers dropped and more information dropped, it caught my eye and then some, but the question is, is Reveil good?
Reveil is All About the Setting, Not so Much the Scare
During my time with Reveil, I found myself wondering exactly what was happening, and that is meant entirely as a compliment. You’ll spend the first few hours exploring the same, yet slightly different, environments, with nothing but the voice of the protagonist as a company. You’re looking for your wife and missing child and through the proceeding hours,...

Survival horror games have finally made a comeback in a huge manner. First was The Callisto Protocol, which launched in 2022 to mixed reviews. It was followed by the Dead Space remake, which launched to critical acclaim. Then fans got a game called Resident Evil 4 Remake, and finally, Alan Wake 2 was launched by Remedy Entertainment.
Most of these games were incredibly successful; they were no doubt serving a market that had been overlooked for a while. The above-mentioned games also gave the fans of survival horror games hope that they can now see more such games released in the near future. But some of these games also took a bunch of inspiration from games that were before them, like Alan Wake 2, which was heavily inspired by a classic horror franchise.

The Outlast Trials asks the question; what happens when you take a series known for its visceral horror themes that play on isolation and solitary paranoia, and add co-operative aspects? Some may say that this was a question that nobody was asking.
While those who feel this way may have a point, I for one, am very glad that Red Barrels chose to ask this question. Based on the experience of playing first two Outlast games, co-op survival horror as seen in The Outlast Trials was never something that I had on my bingo card as a horror fan, yet it feels fresh and surprisingly obvious in hindsight.
The Outlast Trials is out now and is available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

There’s no shortage of memorable adversaries in the horror gaming space, with the Silent Hill and Resident Evil franchises alone doing plenty of heavy lifting.
Nevertheless, it mustn’t go unnoticed that developers have been stepping things up lately in this department. Indeed, the past year has seen us going toe to toe with some rather goosebump-inducing opponents that we thought deserved a little more appreciation.
From deep sea terrors to troglomorphic behemoths and literary constructs that have taken on lives of their very own, there’s been a fair bit of variety to these pixelated antagonists as well. So, let’s take a look at those select few that managed to stand out from the crowd.

Even the harshest critics of found-footage have to admit that the sub-genre excels when immersing viewers directly into the horrors of a scary story instead of having them be passive observers. Funnily enough, this is the same reason why horror is such a great fit for videogames, with the added interactivity making it easier to feel like you’re in danger alongside the protagonists instead of simply watching them from afar.
That’s why I find it baffling that so few developers have managed to take advantage of the similarities between these two mediums when coming up with new horror experiences. While it can be argued that titles like Michigan: Report from Hell and even Slender incorporate elements of found-footage into their mechanics, the closest thing to a non-fmv game that fully commits to the diegetic Pov horror experience is Red Barrels’ infamous hide-and-seek simulator, Outlast.

Available to watch now, “Outlast: The Challenges of Trials” aims to give an insight to the studio’s first experience in creating a multiplayer horror game.
The half-hour documentary features members of the Red Barrels team from their studio in Montreal, giving fans a peek into the developer’s world of creativity, challenges, and triumphs when it came to creating The Outlast Trials. “After Outlast 2, we seriously considered making something completely different,” says Red Barrels co-founder Phillipe Morin, who admits that the team were “fed up” after the game’s release. “We took some time off, and eventually, the challenge to make something multiplayer while still making an Outlast game felt like a...

The inherent pull of the "Five Nights at Freddy's" (Fnaf) video game series is suspense, coupled with the raw fear of what might be waiting for you in the dark. While the core premise of each installment is fairly easy to figure out in terms of objectives, the franchise places particular emphasis on keen observation, spatial awareness, and investment into character attributes. "Fnaf" enthusiasts must have been delighted when a film adaptation of the popular video game franchise was announced, followed by a trailer that showcased security guard Mike Schmidt (John Hutcherson) going through the wringer after accepting a job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza establishment.
Just like players in the game, Mike has to keep track of video camera footage and resolve anomalies that might crop up during his night duty. However, things are more ominous than they seem, as Mike also has to contend with the four animatronic mascots...

So, when someone told her to try Twitch–where it’s all in the moment and editing is simply not a thing–she was immediately intrigued.
She’d originally joined YouTube because she’s been a gamer for about as long as she can remember. She’s got fond memories of seeing Doom on her dad’s work computer in the 90s, and choosing between games like Frogger and Crash Bandicoot for her first-gen PlayStation.

When the original Layers of Fear was released back in 2016, the survival-horror genre was in a dire position. Sure you had games like Amnesia and Outlast carrying the torch of horror in the indie scene, but you saw most publishers shy away from the genre as a whole in a post Resident Evil 6 world. This was upended when Konami revealed that none other than Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and director Guillermo del Toro were collaborating on a brand new Silent Hill game, which was revealed with a playable teaser called P.T. That game never saw the light of day but ideas and concepts in the teaser helped inspire Bloober Team to create Layers of Fear, a moody and atmospheric horror game that focuses less on outrunning enemies and more on telling the story of one man’s descent into madness as he struggles to create his magnum opus.

Alongside viral outbreaks and murderous revenants, horror games love pitting us against threats from beyond the stars.
If you have even a passing interest in the genre, then you’re bound to have dealt with a few alien hordes in your time, as we just can’t seem to get enough of these terrifying close encounters. In the past twelve months alone, we’ve fought extra-terrestrial beasties in The Callisto Protocol, Signalis, Scorn, and of course, the exemplary Dead Space remake.
And while those titles certainly had their differences and idiosyncrasies, one thing remained consistent across the board. Taking to heart that old adage: “In space, no one can hear you scream”; they all put a fair bit of distance between you (as the player) and the reassuring comforts of Planet Earth.
Whether they were sentencing you to life in a maximum-security prison orbiting Jupiter, getting you to respond to...

The Nielsen streaming charts had a first for the week of March 6-12: Seven different platforms made an appearance in the various top 10 lists.
Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard made its first ever appearance in the rankings, finishing ninth among original series with 310 million minutes of viewing as it reached the midpoint of its third season. Picard is the second Paramount+ original series to make the rankings, following 1923 two weeks earlier. (NCIS, which streams on both Paramount+ and Netflix, led the acquired series chart.)
Ted Lasso also put Apple TV+ back in the rankings with the premiere of its third season, racking up 539 million minutes of watch time. Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max had multiple titles in the top 10s. Peacock had two entries in the top 10 movies (including a shared one with Netflix for Turbo), and Hulu’s movie Boston Strangler also made the film chart.

The survival Netflix show, Outlast, became a social experiment. Justin Court reveals his true plan to target Delta and why it went so wrong.
Justin Court says he didn’t want to hurt anyone on ‘Outlast’ intentionally Justin Court and Amber Asay on ‘Outlast’ | Netflix
Court was on Camp Alpha and didn’t want to wait out the other cast members. So he took their sleeping bags to push them to quit, which the producers allowed. It worked but many viewers were angry that Dawn Nelson and Joel Huntgate were left out in the cold. They quit the following morning.
“So taking the sleeping bags away just for clarification, it was a strategic move to push the game moving forward,” Court told Paul Preece and Seth Lueker in a YouTube video. “Did I intentionally want to hurt anybody? No, absolutely not.”
He realized the game already narrowed down to the strong competitors.

Viewers watched multiple Outlast cast members quit because of health issues. However, even the winners had lasting effects on their bodies after the Netflix show, like losing sensation.
‘Outlast’ cast had to survive in dangerous temperatures The cast of ‘Outlast’ Season 1 | Netflix
The cast was in Alaska right before winter. They survived with minimal tools. To keep warm, they had their outfits and a tarp to help build their shelter.
Their first day was 38 degrees; at night, it dropped to 33 degrees. Some of the camps spent the night without a fire in that weather.
Throughout the show, the narrator reminds viewers of the threat of hypothermia. Justin Court went as far as to swim in the river without clothes because his raft was ruined.
“I just feel the blood coursing through my veins in that 36 or 37-degree temperature water,” he said. Fans later saw him warming up by the fire at Camp Alpha.

Jill Ashlock and Amber Asay have come under fire for their behavior on the Netflix series Outlast. Though the women formed a strong bond, viewers were upset by the pair’s willingness to do anything to win the million-dollar cash prize. After filming, Jill is still in touch with Amber almost daily, and surprisingly, she’s on good terms with most of the show’s other cast members.

The Netflix survival show Outlast throws 16 lone wolves into the Alaskan wilderness and challenges them to team up and survive together. The series’ twist is that contestants must be in a team to win the $1 million prize money. Outlast has received mixed reviews, but it’s certainly not impossible that it will return for a second season. Here’s everything we know so far.
The cast of ‘Outlast’ Season 1 | Netflix ‘Outlast’ is utterly bingeable
Love it or hate it, Outlast is prime binge-worthy television. Survival shows are a popular genre, and the series’ simple twist of forcing “lone wolves” into teams proved pretty interesting. The Guardian calls Outlast “completely addictive, ridiculous, and great.”
Yet there are some fans who couldn’t get past the show’s lack of rules. When Team Alpha resorted to dirty tricks like stealing another camp’s sleeping bags, it made the series about more than just pure survival.

Stealth Survival Horror is headed your way with Vincent Lade’s Jawbreaker. Not to be confused with the Darren Stein film, the game is inspired by the likes of Outlast, Alien Isolation and Resident Evil. Jawbreaker already has a demo available on Steam and itch.io, with a release date of Q4 2023.
Jawbreaker takes place in the alternate future of 2028, where after an economic collapse in the United States results in the “Awakening”, where the average person is driven to join any armed group that will have them in order to fight for supplies and territory. You play as one such member of a gang in New Citadel City. Supplies are running low in your bunker, and you’ve volunteered to venture out into the concrete ruins of the city to loot for anything to bring back. During your expedition, an untouched police station catches your eye. Breaking into the station,...

Did the best survivalists make it to the Outlast finale? Or did the players willing to play dirty get to the end over better survivalists on the Netflix show? Some fans want their favorite players to get another chance, and Javier Colón gave some advice to fans.
Javier Colón tried to get revenge on Alpha on ‘Outlast’ Javier Colón on ‘Outlast’ | Netflix
Camp Alpha and Camp Bravo were on the same side of the river. Naturally, they became allies and shared resources and information. That changed when Jill Ashock, Amber Asay, and Justin Court told Colón and Brian Kahrs about a different plan.
Alpha wanted to “expedite” the process of other players quitting. They told Bravo they should lure other players to them and then reject them, so they had to quit. Kahrs said this went against his morals, and Colón agreed.
Alpha took Camp Delta’s sleeping bags, and they quit the following day.

Alliances formed and broke on Outlast. The biggest fallout was between Camp Alpha and Camp Bravo. Justin Court joked about Javier Colón calling him out for playing dirty on the Netflix show.
Why Javier Colón broke his alliance with Camp Alpha ‘Outlast’ contestants Brian Kahrs, Javier Colon, Justin Court, Amber Asay, Jill Ashock | Netflix
Camp Alpha and Camp Bravo were on the same side of the river. So it’s not surprising that they later aligned.
“Hunger Pains” showed all the camps having the mission to build a raft, go down the river, and get crab traps. Court suggested to Colón and Brian Kahrs that if he gets to the traps first, he’ll split them. The same goes the other way around.
Kahrs struggled to get to the island with the raft. Court took too long to finish his raft. Jill Ashock and Amber Asay hiked to the island during low tide instead.

Since the genre’s inception, collectable documents have been a staple element of survival horror, found in everything from Silent Hill to Outlast. For years, resourceful developers have been using them to establish their worlds, tease upcoming threats, aid players in solving puzzles, and to tell self-contained stories.
Indeed, it is because these files are so versatile that we’ve dedicated a regular feature to them at Bloody Disgusting, in the form of this Dread Notes series. Here, we shine a spotlight on the most creative examples of in-game journals, audio logs, bestiaries, video clips and so on, with a view to exploring what they add to the overall experience. In this latest installment, we’ll be putting Motive Studio’s superb remake of Dead Space under the microscope.
Though they might seem ubiquitous today, there was a point in the late noughties when collectable documents had fallen somewhat out of fashion.

Netflix’s new reality TV competition show challenges survivalists to endure the Alaskan forest for a chance at a million-dollar payday. One team played an aggressive game, forcing multiple competitors to tap out. After the show aired, Javier Colón claimed the episodes didn’t portray how his teammate Brian Kahrs got “tricked,” causing him to fire his flare gun.
Brian Kahrs quit ‘Outlast’
Outlast kicked off with 16 survivalists split into teams of four forced to survive in an Alaskan forest with basic supplies. When the “lone wolves” couldn’t take it anymore, they would tap out by firing a flare gun.
By episode 4, Team Alpha went on to the offense and began sabotaging other groups to force them to exit the competition.

“The brown bears of Alaska aren’t just prominent here…they’re prevalent. With a whopping 2.5 bears per square mile, this area is the highest region for bear per square mile in the world,” the narrator explained in episode 1.
