Great on emulation

So this is not the first game, but an enhanced re-make/port, released after even 3-D Bomberman. The changes to this game significantly improved it. The graphics are more readable, and the new design, taken from the Lode Runner port is way better. Though, to think about it, it means the bomberman becomes human, and then robs and kill his kind by the hundreds. The new music is pretty great too.

The game starts as an action-puzzle, where you can carve your way through the levels. Each level contains an upgrade, some increase the amount of simultaneous bombs, some increase their blast radius. But then there are paradigm shift bonuses, allowing to pass through brick walls, through bombs, or granting immunity to explosions. If you can survive until the level 30 you turn into a walking apocalypse god of flame. Which makes for a great progression. The gameplay is fair and every death your suffer is your own fault, usually a miscalculation or a mistake. The only thing this game is missing is the ability to save between the stages. There's a password-based level-select screen, but where are you supposed to get those passwords? And do they save your upgrades?

And this is where emulation takes this game and makes it kinda great. Bomberman is not just another platformer, another puzzler, another racing. Bomberman is bomberman, and this game is the one that defined the series and is an all around good experience, when you can save between the levels.
