Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. John Carpenter's Christine (1983) is showing May 4 - June 3 and Starman (1984) is showing May 5 - June 4, 2017 in the United Kingdom.ChristineWas it too dark? Too bleak? Too gory? Did it have the misfortune of opening when American moviegoers were flocking to E.T.? Either way, when John Carpenter's The Thing landed in the summer of 1982, with an apocalyptic cliffhanger and the most surreally grotesque, tactile, gooey monster effects you never realized could be put on film, it fizzled. "It was hated," Carpenter later recalled at a screening in Los Angeles. "Hated by fans. I lost a job. People hated me. They thought I was this horrible, violent—" He trailed off and joked, "And I was." The audience laughed, because by now The Thing's exalted place in movie geek culture is secure: an exquisitely paranoid horror classic and arguably the crown...

Stars: Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, John Cusack, Armando Riesco, Shannon Woodward, Chris Riggi, Scott Coffey, Darin Scott, Reed Birney, Catherine Lloyd Burns | Written by Andy Cochran | Directed by Scott Coffey
Helmed by actor-turned-director Scott Coffey, who many may recognise from 80s films such as Some Kind of Wonderful and Space Camp, Adult World is another in a long-line of American indie dramas – you know the type: the ones that mix witty dialogue and a hip soundtracks in the hopes of creating something loftier than the rest. North Country writer Michael Seitzman has sold a second drama this season. Intelligence, which has been bought by CBS, is based on unpublished book Dissident by John Dixon and centers on a man gifted and cursed with a top-secret experimental microchip implanted in his brain that makes him computer-like in the way he sees and processes information. ABC Studios, where Seitzman is under an overall deal, is producing, with Seitzman and feature producer Tripp Vinson (Red Dawn) executive producing. The premise of Intelligence, which has a procedural element, is reminiscent of two CBS dramas on the air, Person Of Interest, in which a duo tries to prevent crimes with the help of a top-notch computer program; and Unforgettable, whose protagonist has unusual mental abilities — she remembers everything. Intelligence joins Seitzman’s other drama project for next season, Cleopatra, which has a put pilot commitment at NBC with di Bonaventura TV producing.

It’s that time of the year again. The leaves are going to start turning soon. Wardrobes are too, to accommodate the changing seasonal trends. It’s a tricky path though, because there’s so much information out there. What we’ve done is gleaned the top 10 trends out of all the tomes of “what to wear” out there and put them on the list. More than anything, these are the 10 trends that our fashion-forward celebrities have been wearing out and about, on magazine covers, in campaigns and for various events and premieres.
1. Burgundy: The plum shade for fall. Anna Wintour put Lady Gaga on the cover of Vogue‘s September issue, so you know it’s a big one for the season.
2. Oversized Coats: Another massive trend this season, be certain that your coat is big enough so it looks voluminous and chic, but not big enough so that you look lost in.

ABC‘s two bubble midseason drama series are heading in opposite directions. Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal, which just inched up in the ratings last night, is being renewed for a second season, while Gcb is being canceled. Ashley Greene (who portrays the sartorially chic "Alice Cullen" in The Twilight Saga) appeared at Macy's in Herald Square on Thursday to support Dkny, the brand for which she currently works as a spokesmodel. After signing autographs for fans and modeling a full Dkny ensemble, Greene spoke to Wwd about her plans for the rest of the year and mentioned her upcoming television pilot, Americana. "Hopefully I’ll be working, assuming the pilot gets picked up," she explained of her summer plans. She also mentioned her appreciation of the show's costumer. "Pat Field is the costume designer and she took a vintage coat and turned it inside out and then belted it, which gave it a really vintage distressed look, which was great," Greene said. Greene previously appeared as a recurring guest star on ABC's Pan Am. ...

The major uptick in drama pilot production signals the first time New York has eclipsed our west coast rival, all part of a lovely trend that follows last summer's record-breaking 23 television series being filmed in New York.
Our introduction to the 11 pilots contributing to our new source of pride:
666 Park Avenue ABC
This "supernatural-tinged" show will reportedly star Vanessa Williams and "Grey's Anatomy"'s Rachel Taylor. It will focus, like so many other shows, on the drama of living in luxury apartments in the Upper East Side.

Despite Fox’s best efforts, it is looking increasingly unlikely Terra Nova will find a new home for its potential second season now that negotiations with Netflix have broken down. I had very strong feeling things would turn out this way. Talks have been going on for two weeks and no deal was made. Terra Nova is just too expensive a show to justify on a big network like Fox, let alone a small streaming service like Netflix. I think it’s time we said our goodbyes to Terra Nova.
Unfortunately, as Deadline pointed out, Fox hasn’t come to terms with Terra Nova’s demise just yet as it continues its search for a new network to resurrect the series. The chances are worse than slim and I think it is time Fox realized this. I don’t hate Terra Nova. It had a lot of potential that was squandered,...

Time is running out for Terra Nova.
Negotiations between the show’s producer, 20th Century Fox Television, and Netflix have stalled, with the two sides unable to come to a deal to extend the series, our sister sister Deadline reports.
Although the studio is not yet releasing the actors from their contracts, there is little hope of finding another viable suitor to pick up the dino-drama, which was canceled by Fox earlier this month.

Pre-historic drama Terra Nova appears headed to the history books. After two weeks of negotiations, Netflix and Terra Nova producer 20th Century Fox TV could not come to terms on a deal to continue the series on the video streaming service. While 20th TV is not throwing in the towel quite yet as it is not releasing the actors, there is no other viable suitor at this time and the chances of keeping the show alive following Fox’s cancellation earlier this month appear minimal. 20th TV has done it before with Family Guy, Futurama and Arrested Development, which were all resurrected years after being cancelled, but given the elaborate sets required by Terra Nova, which takes place 85 million years in the past, that possibility appears unrealistic. Three of the show’s cast members have already booked new series gigs: star Jason O’Mara co-stars in CBS’ Ralph Lamb drama pilot,...

Life after Lost has been good for its cast. The beautiful Yunjin Kim, who played Sun on ABC's time-traveling drama, has been cast in the ABC series Mistresses set to debut in summer 2013. The British soap opera adaptation will follow four scandalous women make morally questionable decisions in their love lives. Variety notes that Kim joins three other Lost alums to join another ABC show: Terry O'Quinn on 666 Park Avenue, Emilie De Ravin on Americana and Alan Dale on Beauty and the Beast. Meanwhile Daniel Dae Kim's Hawaii Five-0 has been renewed by CBS for a third season and Evangeline Lilly scored a role in the upcoming Hobbit series. Best of all, Jorge Garcia managed to get cast as his Lost character, Hurley, on Fox's Alcatraz.

In about two months, the networks will start revealing their programming lineups for the 2012-13 season. But Zap2it would like to give you a head start about which ones have caught our eyes. Plus, there are so many pilots and actors filling up roles being announced that we would also like to hopefully simplify things for you.
The (enormous) caveat is, of course, that we haven't seen these pilots because most of them haven't finished (or even started) filming yet. But here are the pilots from ABC that we think look promising.

"666 Park Avenue": This one-hour spookfest is about a young couple (Dave Annable and Rachael Taylor) who has come to manage one of the most historical apartment buildings in New York City. But all is not what it seems, as supernatural goings-on complicate things. We like scary and the addition of Terry O'Quinn and Vanessa Williams...

That was quick — less than 24 hours after Fox cancelled Terra Nova, series co-star Christine Adams has joined ABC’s drama pilot Americana, a family soap that centers on iconic fashion designer Robert Soulter (Anthony Lapaglia), the patriarch of a sprawling family who just welcomed a new member, Alice Clarke (Ashley Greene), a young designer whose shocking arrival turns the family and the legendary label inside out. Adams, repped by Innovative and Hofflund Co., will play Robert’s wife Sierra, a bronze-skinned East African beauty and former supermodel. The role is a far cry from Adams’ character on Terra Nova - Mira, the rugged leader of the Sixers rebel group. In light of the cancellation at Fox, producing studio 20th Century Fox TV has been shopping Terra Nova to other networks. Jeremy Strong has been cast in TNT’s one-hour pilot La Noir, written and to be directed by The Walking Dead‘s Frank Darabont.
