One needs patience to watch this series... plenty of patience
AD-7645114 January 2024
Another series from India which is becoming a trend, a Bollywood equivalent of Indian OTT series, with typical elements of quirky characters played by good actors/actresses, swearing laden dialogues, twists and turns which stop raising curiosity after the 2/3rd twists, and try to lace the series with dark humor throughout.

The formula's individual elements sound interesting but it doesn't work just by mixing all of these together and hoping it makes an interesting watch. It doesn't. It becomes as bland as the paya soup shown in the series.

The fundamental elements of movie making, a good story, a good script, meaningful elements of humor etc. Etc., basically the ART part of movie making, cant be created through formula.

This is another OTT series, which even if you watch the entire series, which by the way will need enormous patience, you will forget about it in another week's time. Definitely worth a miss for any intelligent viewer, even for casual watch.

Regarding story, acting, or anything else nothing worth a mention, quite pedestrian overall.

Ending 30 minutes disappointing
brijeshcs-1882013 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Konkona: At her best, never disappoint in acting, watch the series for her

Manoj: Good acting, somehow konkona looks better because, her role was more powerful.

Other supporting actors did better, special mention to Kanti, she was superb and same was the cook's appearance.

Direction was good, but story was predicatable at most of the parts

Police ghost/guide was totally disaster attempt, weaken the story & also lost the audience interest & thrill of story flow. Most negative part of series.

Toooooo many unnecessary abusing language abd

Ending 30-40 minutes should have been better written.

Not your regular soup
yuneshpratapsingh22 January 2024
Killer Soup, an eight course delectable experience, served up by Netflix is a concoction of dark humor and mystery. The show will leave you satisfied and uneasy in equal measure.

Swathi a novice cook with dubious cooking skills and equally questionable morals finds herself in literal pickle when her misadventures with her husband's (Prabhar) doppelganger Umesh goes awry. Prabhakar's discovery of Swathi's affair also leads to his demise, upon which Swathi decides to swap him for Umesh with slight adjustment to Umesh's configurations. How the two then try to fulfill their ambitions while at the same time attempt to cover their tracks fraught with moral and ethical dilemmas serves as the basic premise of the series.

The show is replete with stellar performances from the cast. Konkona Sen Sharma immaculately portrays the desperation and wickedness of Swathi. Manoj Bajpayee is in his usual best masterfully depicting the brashness of Prabhakar and excels as a loyalty laden partner in crime Umesh. Sayaji Shinde shines as an arrogant, foul mouthed patriarch with little clue as to what his sister in law and daughter are brewing.

The series ably keeps the viewers guessing regarding what will transpire. However, like a cook in haste, it does muck up a few details. Some of the progression, especially that of Inspector Hassan seem quite convenient. The constant appearance of Thupalli as a guiding voice of Hassan will ultimately get to your nerves.

Overall, Killer Soup is a worthwhile mix of thrill, dark humor and mystery. It does become a slow simmer on a couple of occasions but you will be satiated in the end. It may not be everybody's cup of tea but will delight any dark humor connoisseurs.

Tried to be so much but at the end..just mediocre!!

Show intended to be a Dark Comedy Thriller including a series of murders and one thing leading to another and to another but the weak script and average acting(poor in some cases) took the show to nowhere. It has it's moments but couldn't lift up show's genre game. Didn't expect such below the mark acting from legends like Manoj Bajpai and a refined actress like Konkana Sen Sharma. The events of story sometimes feel like made up and predictable. I intended to finish it in one go but failed to do so even after fast forwarding through some dull and clippable moments of the show. Easily avoidable to save your precious time.

KILLER SOUP-THE SERIES NAME IS ITS OWN PRAISE
puranjanbasak22 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Killer soup is a comedy drama thriller series directed by abhishek chaubey.

The four writers have gathered together to make a story that is as madcap as it is sincere in its dreams. There is a clear inspiration of david lynch's 'twin peaks' on the use of dream imagery in an investigation. It is not as complex as the former but is very effective. The screenplay is written in a very intricate way. Multiple characters are set up in a grey shade, with multiple links between their treachery, backstabbing and mysterious aura. The best characters are that of swathi and umesh/prabhakar. What propels the characters and the show forward are the scintillating performances by konkon sensharma and manoj bajpayee. Konkona brings a very cunning and a very cruel, opportunist way to her character. She can do anything for the fulfilment of her restaurant dream. Manoj manages to distinguish between his characters until needed. Sayaji shinde and anula navlekar too put up credible performances. Sayaji shinde is a force to reckon with in certain sequences, his camaraderie with manoj is outstanding. Nassar and lal too give strong perfirmances.

The show has many laugh out loud moments and numerous wtf moments in a good sense, but what touches you is the many fleeting moments of emotional turmoil that the characters go through. For instance, arvind, in a dire state, caresses his daughter fir the first time in the show, and the performances in that particular scene was fabulous. Similarly, watch out for the few human scenes that let you know about the already mysterious personalities. The music of the series is very good including the bgm. It recognises the mood and elevates the scenes further. The cinematography also is excellent. The top shots of the city, the rainy hills, the morose weather, all is captured beautifully. The humour of this film is on point, it is very subtle and works on point. The dialogues help the scenes in a very well manner.

The investigation part of the series is written with proper detailing. You don't feel left out of the proceedings often. All in all, a very good start to the year.

Keeps you engaged
trwwprss12 January 2024
I rate this 7/10 because it kept me engaged and for fabulous acting by konkana sen and manoj bajpayee. As a web series fan I would like to see more such series in hindi where you are hooked onto the story from beginning to the end. There are so many details in every scene in this series and credit goes to the direction.

There are elements of comedy which impressed me because of the humour added which should go well with the genz viewers too. Have your drink or a smoke 😉 and you are in for an entertaining journey.

And believe it or not , this is my review after just watching one and half episode.

Pathetic and Senseless
arunayushman14 January 2024
I was literally waiting for a good turn of moment while watching this series. It was so pathetic that I have to take a painkiller. The story is dragged like a rubber band and there is literally no sense in the story. It's a complete waste of time.

I really had great expectations after seeing the cast and crew, but even their great acting skills couldn't save this series. This could have been a short movie with no time waste and story waste.

I do not recommend watching this series even if you are a fan of Manoj Bajpayee and Konkana Sen Sharma. Manoj Bajpayee should choose his roles wisely. Please avoid wasting time in this series.

Felt like something is missing, like it was in the soup!
shivg16 January 2024
2024 started with a bang for all the TV series enthusiasts and movie lovers, with the perfect intro of this series. Manoj sir at its best, doing something very unique this time. The story revolves around a wife who wants to own a restaurant someday but her husband does not support her. What did she do to get her dreams fulfilled, and did she win in all the chaos? The cinematography is beautiful, with powerful dialogues, and each and every episode, keeps you on the edge of the seat. Konkona did so well, like she always does and all other supporting actors also played their part well. A really good mystery thriller with a satisfactory end. Recommended.

Too many threads
sanjeevanwar12 January 2024
Anwar Says: It's a mixture of Shakespeare and Hitchcock, which Abhishek Chaubey tried to present on OTT, more than 7 hours long runtime in 8 episodes, engaging the two all time top actors, Manoj Vajpayee and Konkna Sen Sharma. A real black comedy and almost in every episode, someone dies or is about to die. There are a number of narrative threads which emerge from the main crime story. All full of lies, deceit, blackmail and melodrama.

No word about Manoj's performance, every role looks tailor made for him. But this show belongs to Konkna, she is so calm and poised and does everything effortlessly. There is neither any desperation to shift from middle class life nor any hue and cry after a murder has been committed. Sayaji Shinde is extra loud and Naseer's ( Inspector) character is totally confused amidst hallucinations and always looks disillusioned. Others have been properly casted as per script.

I liked the way the title KILLER SOUP appears differently in each episode and also the use of some Western Classic songs appropriately. But joining threads would be difficult for you, if you don't go for a binge watch. Go for it for Manoj and Konkna.

Time, Patience and Talent KILLER!
tulikachatterjee11 January 2024
Had high hopes but the plot was very poorly executed and everything seemed so predictable just from the 2nd episode! With star performers like Konkona (my fav) and Manoj it cd have been a much better series!

As the narrative unfolds in episode 3, it becomes apparent that the writers have relied on tired and overused tropes without injecting any fresh or innovative elements. Instead of building tension and suspense, the pacing contributes to a sense of boredom, making the runtime feel like an eternity.

The attempt at creating a mysterious atmosphere falls short, just the opening scenes look lovely and catch interest but the story-line fades away eventually.

A Tantalizing Feast of Deception, Desperation, and Dark Comedy
magadalwarmayur12 January 2024
Abhishek Chaubey's "Killer Soup" simmers with a delectable blend of eccentricity, deceit, and dark humor, crafting a narrative that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. This culinary caper introduces a cast of quirky characters entangled in a web of lies, making it a thrilling and entertaining experience.

The series opens with Swathi Reddy (Konkona Sen Sharma) serving Paya Soup to her husband, Prabhakar Shetty (Manoj Bajpayee), setting the stage for a tale brimming with mystery and unexpected twists. While Swathi dreams of opening a restaurant, the unfolding events reveal a world filled with transactional relationships, deceit, and devilry.

Abhishek Chaubey's directorial prowess shines through in the meticulous attention to detail in each scene. Symbolism, such as the recurring theme of mushrooms, adds depth to the narrative. The careful interweaving of elements requires viewers to pay close attention, as correlations reveal themselves later, creating a satisfying viewing experience. Though the plot may seem busy with multiple character arcs, Chaubey maintains a tight grip on the overall narrative, ensuring a seamless flow of the storyline.

The infusion of supernatural elements and poetry adds an extra layer of intrigue to "Killer Soup." The series seamlessly transitions between a dark fairytale ambiance, reminiscent of a witch's forest, and whimsical scenes featuring fireflies. This juxtaposition of contrasting elements enhances the overall atmosphere, making it a visually and narratively stimulating journey.

Konkona Sen Sharma and Manoj Bajpayee deliver outstanding performances, embodying characters that are morally ambiguous yet intriguing. Umesh's guilt and Swathi's genuine affection for her niece, portrayed by Anula Navlekar, add layers to their personas. Secondary and tertiary characters, notably Sayaji Shinde and Vaishali Bisht, contribute significantly to the series' power, commanding attention with their compelling on-screen presence.

"Killer Soup" emerges as a dark comedic thriller with nuanced storytelling and layers that captivate audiences. The series offers a culinary feast served by Abhishek Chaubey, a binge-worthy experience that leaves viewers craving more of its killer flavor. As the characters navigate a world of deception, desperation, and dark humor, "Killer Soup" stands out as a delectable and thoroughly satisfying addition to the genre.

Worthy of time passing !!
koraksen14 January 2024
First of all , this was a brave attempt in sense of making the audience patience enough to finish it. There are lots of intellectual things are incorporated here but definitely a question arise in mind that whether it should be lengthy or not.

The creative team is guilty enough to press it as like as elastic. Why it was needed to do all these things to save own self if you are going to confess your wrongdoing in front of audience. This is just the insult to injury to the people like me . Due to such an unexpected ( not twist ) weakness showed by one of the protagonist is not acceptable.

Hats off to Kongkona for such a mind blowing performance. Monoj Bajpaye has nothing to do, he was just a victim of poorly written of his role.

Trash and Time waste without strong plot
shehnam11 January 2024
Once again they failed badly. They should understand that content should be grasping and if its dark comedy then no need to insert vulgarity forcefully into it. Start was good but didn't understand the dual role and there was no need to make it that classic that you actually miss the theme of show. It's really disappointing to see how they are going to compete with stuff from south. They should understand that dark and bold cannot be achieved together evertime like mirzapur or sacred games. So manoj sir was really good in family man but this show literally disappointed. I hope you guys can somehow manage to watch few episodes before closing it.

Intriguing but not great
rohitk136115 January 2024
Expected better role and presence for Manoj Bajpai sir. Director hasn't used him well. Mostly revolves around Konkana Sen Sharma, she has done a fine job but series is a stretch. 6 episode with quick turnarounds would have made it interesting. All the actors have done a good job. To avoid simplicity of suspense, it has actually turned into a soup.

Even with above observations it kept me glued since I like dark comedy, suspense etc. We can relate it to Rajkummar Rao's Oh My darling which was also similar genre and better.

Do watch first few episodes to see if it is your cup of soup oops tea...

A Superb dark comedy
avishek-9585013 January 2024
I dont know why people are rating this with 1.

I watched all episode in one go, just had a dinner in between. Manoj and konika as usual fantastic. Alll other actors too have performed brilliantly. Old lady, knowing the soup preparation has too acted wonderfully. Daughter has also proved to be a future star. About Hassan and other South actors are always the BAAP of natural acting. Overall must watch. You wont regret!

An okay show from a stellar team
Jithindurden18 January 2024
Abhishek Chaubey directing such a stacked cast with an amazing trailer, I was very excited about this. But the first few episodes really felt like it was dragging too much. The plot was dark and quirky with interesting characters but they wanted to make it reach the eight-episode mark when it would've been fine with five episodes. From the fifth episode onwards it was much better. The acting is fantastic all around. Konkona and Manoj really did great as expected of them. Watching amazing actors from Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam together was great. But among all the familiar faces the one I haven't seen much before and really impressed me was Anula Navlekar. I don't know if she has other notable roles but if there is I'd be really interested to watch it. If the series had been more tightly packed, I could have been impressed with the production design, cinematography etc. But even a lot of the supposed dark comedy wasn't always landing. They also faltered at the ending, as it should have been either a bit more ambiguous or took the exact opposite thing that could be expected from it. Despite all those issues, the performances were really carrying the series and I quite enjoyed the whole thing even if it was overall just an okay show.

Long boring and unnecessary stretched
devloksociety29 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with this web series is the fact that it has brilliant actors increasing the expectations of a viewer like me but unfortunately, the talent is wasted, probably too many chefs spoil the broth. The story seems to be just carrying on out of nowhere. You wait for some out-of-the-box elements, some unexpected turn of events but the story seems to carry on. The end is also kind of funny with both of them going out of the city which they could have done anyway. Acting front Manoj Bajpayee was awesome as expected, Konkana Sen is charismatic even in a grey role. Go out and watch it if you have the patience to sit through a long story with no major twists in it.

Andhadhun, blackmail. Like crime comedy thriller drama Simply great directors, great actors Original story reminds of andhadhun.

Konkona Sen Sharma and Manoj Bajpayee are as impressive as ever. The triumph in their characterisation is that they are immoral.

Killer Soup' is a dark comedic thriller with nuances and layers that will keep you engrossed throughout. You will binge eat this killer dish Abhishek Chaubey has served!

Killer Soup' has all the ingredients of a top-notch eccentric caper. A band of quirky characters serves this delectably sinister, funny, thrilling, and outright entertaining offering. It's also peppered with the supernatural and poetry, making things more curious. 'Killer Soup' is not a suspense thriller, but as the narrative keeps you hooked, the treatment and the look give it a mysterious layer.

illogical series, waste of talent
sodhih11 January 2024
Just finished watching this series. I was excited to see Manoj Bajpayee's acting but it's a total waste of time and efforts put by actors.

Plot is illogical, chemistry between Manoj and Konkona is lame. Director tried to make it thriller but it doesn't stand anywhere near to Ajay Devgan's Drishyam 1 and 2 or Karina's Jaane Jaan. There was no control of police on the story and characters in the series. Too much of fiction is injurious to mental health. Just watch if you have nothing to do. If you say it's a dark comedy, I didn't find anything related to that except some scene in first episode.

It's definitely a killer soup which will kill your appetite to watch any other series for atleast one week.

The Killer Soup: A Niche Dark Comedy Gem for Connoisseurs
abphadore15 January 2024
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, "The Killer Soup," a Netflix India Original, brings a dark comedy crime thriller to the streaming platform, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Konkona Sen Sharma in lead roles. Set in the fictional hill station of Mainjur, Tamil Nadu, the film unfolds a gripping tale of deception, doppelgangers, and culinary conspiracies.

This movie, by its very nature, caters to a niche audience-those who appreciate the nuances of dark comedy, crime thrillers, and art films. The plot, revolving around an aspiring yet talentless home chef, Swathi (Konkona Sen Sharma), and her elaborate plan to replace her husband, Prabhakar Shetty (Manoj Bajpayee), with his squint-eyed doppelganger, is both slow-paced and captivating. The story's strength lies not only in the leads but also in the supporting cast, which contributes significantly to the film's overall impact.

Manoj Bajpayee, in a double role, manages to maintain a delicate balance, but the performance might feel different from what audiences have come to expect from the versatile actor. Nassr, playing the role of senior police inspector Hassan, steals the show with a stellar performance, especially when dealing with the death of a rookie officer, ASI Thupalli, portrayed by Anbuthasan, who showcases remarkable acting skills that deserve recognition.

Sayaji Shinde as Arvind Shetty, Prabhakar's elder brother, delivers another memorable performance, reaffirming his status as a go-to choice for characters with Marathi/South Indian don shades. Anula Navlekar as Apeksha "Appu" Shetty surprises with her acting prowess, adding a delightful twist to the movie.

"The Killer Soup" may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who appreciate the genre, it serves as a testament to the potential of such concepts in mainstream cinema. The film prompts viewers to question why more narratives like this aren't explored in the broader film landscape, making it a standout for aficionados of dark comedy and crime thrillers.

Justice for Kirtima !!
rishabhmankale20 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A great premise let down by plot contrivance and bad characterisation. Tried to do too much with too less and too convoluted for its own good.

Killer soup is a show that can very aptly be summarized by the quote: two's a company, three's a crowd.

The plot involves a "couple" who each have their own side chick/dude and hatch a plan to get filthy rich. Alas things are never THAT easy right ??

A whole lot of backstabbing, blackmailing, plot twist and subversion ensues and in the middle of the show you will rightfully think about how they're going to end it?

My take would be to have ended the season with episode 7, having A definitive "ending" with enough intrigue left for the next season. But instead they took the run to the finish line on the dirt road after having nicely paved a path with multiple episodes. The finale is underwhelming, filled with contrivances and cheesy.

Coming to the performances, the acting was stellar throughout, vastly elevating the show. Konkona Sen Sharma and Manoj Bajpayee are veterans and have to do the heavy lifting to elevate scenes with sub par written dialogue. None of them are particularly "Good" or even decent adjacent.

In fact the only characters you could sympathize with were Aravind and his "daughter" apeksha (pointless mother and Lucas twist was added to her story) But the show stealers were Aravind Shetty (sayaji shinde) and inspector Hassan (Nassar) who nailed their roles mostly.

Kirtima sadly got the short end of the stick and would've loved to see more of her. Her end was very badly handled which is where the show tries to do too much in too less.

There were many twists, some good and many pointless, which brought the plot back to square one. Subversion is good, but subverting the Subversion makes the show unwantedly convoluted. Some things for the showrunners to look into if a season 2 is planned.

Injustice to philosophy and lots of loop holes!
zoyaashraf-2715713 January 2024
As someone who has great interest in philosophy, I was excited to watch Killer Soup after Shan Prasher's review as he mentioned about stoicism. However, stoicism had nothing to do with it. Neither justice has been done to philosophy. How could you use a stoic poet to solve a crime? What is the relation between philosophy and crime?? Writers these days have no interest in researching a topic before they hold their pens! Neither do they bother using their common sense. There are major loop holes through out the story. The screenplay is also not very well written. The story did not deserve 8 episodes. It could be well rounded up in 6 eoisodes. All in all, it was a disappointment.

Dark thriller with a hint of comedy
murthys-9405413 January 2024
Quite watchable albeit a bit slow in the first two episodes. When people around Swati start dropping off, it reminds you of "Unseen" a 2023 series on netflix.

Unseen has a similar storyline where people around the main character start dropping off like flies. A couple of scenes towards the end seem to be a direct take from the original Unseen.

Given it's setting in the Kerala/Tamil belt, in parts the story does seem to be inspired by or has shades of the real life case of Jolly Joseph in Kerala which shocked the country.

A tighter editing would have brought the episodes down to a more watchable seven while keeping the storyline taut.

brilliant acting by Konkona Sharma and Manoj Bajpayee
shnavip13 January 2024
The production's excellence is evident in numerous scenes where the actors showcased their exceptional talents, surpassing expectations. There were several instances where the actors' talents are tested and my god do they rise up to the occasion. The meticulous attention to detail in lighting, set design, and pacing further enhances the overall cinematic experience. What truly sets this production apart is its ability to embrace the absurdity of certain situations, turning them into a source of unparalleled hilarity. The absurd moments, far from detracting, become integral to the show's charm, leaving an enduring impact on the viewers' appreciation.
