Once great series now almost unwatchable.

This series was my favorite show for 18 years. Now I can barely get through an entire episode. Sean Murray & Wilmer Valderama are the only reasons to watch. I think Katrina Law was interesting to watch on Arrow but her characte here is poorly written and woefully underdeveloped. The dialog for all the characters seems forced and not at all realistic. That interplay between the characters was this series major plus. The one aspect that set the series apart from and above other series television. To me. That's gone now. I was never one who criticized Emily Wickersham, I enjoyed her portrayal of Bidhop. Yes it was different from Ziva but still interesting to watch. I know i will get in trouble with die hard Abby fans but I always thought the character was a bit silly. I thought Kasie was written better originally but wuth each episode becomes less believable. Its through no fault of the actor playing her. Even more devastating to the series that the departure of Gibbs which has severely damaged the show IMO is the poor writing quality of the last 2 seasons. I see myself giving up on what was once the best series on TV.

Unearth

Warning: Spoilers
I sort of view NCIS as background noise at this point. The show is easy to get through, one or two of the agent interactions will still make you laugh, and you might get a good shootout or too, but overall the episodes are very predictable whether it is a formulaic case or a hostage situation.

Nothing wrong with the episode here, and glad to see Billy Miller pop on primetime as a villain, but there was also nothing overly exciting about this. The story felt borderline ridiculous at times, even for all of the wild behavior we have seen displayed by the NCIS franchise for quite some time recently.

Swing and a miss

Warning: Spoilers
Just when I thought the NCIS writers were better than any of the writers involved with the three FBI series, this one fell flat on its face.

Since when would an experienced soldier and federal agent, not clear a space before tending to a victim or at least call for backup? Sure, Torres takes out one bad guy but then there is another one and Torres and Dr. Grace are kidnapped. Torres has the instincts to not put himself in a vulnerable position. We expect to see that. Once again, CBS has writers who set up a key character to look bad just to create conflict and drama. In reality, Torres would have assessed the situation and called for backup before tending to Dr. Grace. He should have positioned himself between the wall and Dr. Grace but only after clearing the office.

It took a long time for me to buy Wilmer Valderrama as a federal agent let alone a tough guy and now the writers set him up? I am well aware that every significant character in a crime drama will be placed in a life or death situation but there are ways to create conflict and drama while making the scenes believable.

Now, in terms of a story about the ancient legend related to rocks found in Afghanistan, I am not buying it. It is all too far fetched. When I looked up the next episode on here, there was no description and no cast members were listed. The staff at IMDb has been falling further and further behind. It is truly bizarre.

A flawed one

Warning: Spoilers
The 20th season of "NCIS" has not been impressive so far. "A Family Matter" wasn't very exciting, "Daddy Issues" was fine, but pretty predictable at times. "Unearth" is also a quite average episode. It's not awful, but one expects more from this great series.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of the episode are great. "Unearth" is well-directed, the music fits the scenery and the acting's fine. David McCallum is lovely in every scene he is in.

. The mystery is intriguing to begin with. The victim is found dead in bizarre circumstances and there are moments of charm and decent action here. Liked to learn more about Dr Grace too.

But....

. Casey is still an annoying character, who is either not well portrayed or well written. Most jokes with her fall flat. Never have found Dr Grace to be very compelling either. After a solid start, the mystery seems to lack of interesting twists or ideas. The story is just too straight-forward at the end of the day.

Overall, an average episode.

5/10 HK.
