It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.
As far as non true crime offerings go, the third and final season of Hulu...

Only a couple of days into June and the movies are bombarding us with some nifty vacation options. Let’s see, we just took a wild funny trek to Fire Island in the northeastern part of the country, so where “to” now virtually? Well, the last one was a scripted twist on the “rom-com”, so how about a non-fiction flick? Yes, a documentary feature (now don’t you whine and cry “Homework?!”), but it’s also a concert overview. In fact, it’s a toe-tapping delight, much in the vein of last year’s Oscar-winner (and crowd-pleaser) Summer Of Soul. We’re still in the good ole’ US of A, but a lot further south and a bit west. And though this on-the-bayou burg is known usually for one type of tune, this film looks at an annual event that’s a celebration of all things musical from all around the world.

The universe has a new a queen — and her name is Grag Queen.
The Brazilian performer was crowned the winner Wednesday of the debut season of “Queen of the Universe,” Paramount Plus’ international drag queen singing competition series from the creators of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The finale, in which the audience chose the winner after hearing from judges Michelle Visage, Trixie Mattel, Leona Lewis and Vanessa Williams, saw Grag battle it out with Ada Vox of San Antonio and Atlanta’s Aria B. Cassadine.
Variety caught up with Grag on the phone on Thursday from her home in Brazil.
Congratulations! What was the first thing that went through your head when they announced you won?
I just thought about my [LGBTQ] people because we’ve been through a lot. No one cares about us, so I’m hoping I’m going to be like a door to bring some joy to my people.

The style of music now widely known as drill first emerged on the south side of Chicago. It contains a brooding, sinister quality that separates it from other contemporary hip-hop subgenres. The songs aren’t overly complicated — they contain a quick hi-hat and a thick undulating bassline. The real draw comes from its rich emotional texture. Drill would eventually spread from Chicago to London, where it stirred up controversies about youth crime.

Hulu’s anticipated biopic of one of Jazz music’s most iconic voices, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” premieres this week, and features singer and actress Andra Day in her breakout role as Lady Day.
The film directed by Lee Daniels examines Holiday’s prolific and groundbreaking career as a jazz singer, and also focuses on the U.S. government’s plots to silence her and prevent her from using her voice to keep inspiring a growing civil rights movement that was beginning to take hold in the 1960s. “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” will begin streaming on Hulu Feb. 26.
Andra Day isn’t new to showbiz — she’s been a professional R&b singer since 2015. But for most moviegoers, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” will be their introduction to Day, so here are a few facts about the actress’ life and work leading up to this momentous role.

It was less than a week into filming The United States vs. Billie Holiday when Andra Day found herself on set singing “Strange Fruit” in front of an audience filled with extras. They were playing police waiting to arrest the singer for uttering even a word of her politically charged and, at the time, banned song.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, why would they set me up like this?’” she laughs. “It’s like they don’t want me to be successful, because this should be the last week. I think the nerves helped to affect me because I’m sure [Holiday] would have been nervous singing ‘Strange Fruit’, knowing that all those police were back there. I just had a brand-new respect for actors, marinating in all that trauma and familial pain. Honestly, I was really transformed by it.”
It’s a performance that we almost didn’t get the chance to see.

Billie Holiday didn’t particularly enjoy singing “Strange Fruit,” a chilling anti-lynching anthem that compared Black bodies to fruit hanging from a tree, but she knew it was too important to not be performed.

Andra Day was willing to go to great lengths for her portrayal of Billie Holiday. The rising star, who experienced widespread success from her 2015 single "Rise Up," was tapped to play the iconic jazz singer in the upcoming biopic, The United States vs. Billie Holiday. The gifted and mercurial Lee Daniels, director of “Precious,” is one of the only filmmakers I can think of who would dare to drop a badass-diva moment of Billie Holiday violently slapping her spouse into the middle of an otherwise giddy celebrity-singer-on-tour montage. In Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” Billie, played with glamorous, blowsy, dagger-eyed force by Andra Day, has had her share of ups and downs — on and off heroin (mostly on); a stint in prison; a despicably unwarranted and relentless crackdown on her life and career by the U.S. government; a succession of romantic partners who are smooth-talking scoundrels — or, in one case, too nice and upstanding for her.
But Billie claws her way through every setback, to the point that she’s on a glittering concert tour of Europe. In the montage, we see her up onstage, in a Paris restaurant, and in a ritzy...

Singer-turned-actor Andra Day brought versatility to Lee Daniels’ biopic “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” She performs the Golden Globes-nominated song “Tigress & Tweed,” which she co-wrote with soul and R&b singer Raphael Saadiq, and she sizzles in the title role as the jazz legend, portraying her as a significant civil rights activist.
Below, she shares what it was like playing Holiday, preserving her legacy and her process for stepping into iconic shoes.
What did Lee Daniels say to make you say yes to this role?
I was terrified because I’m not an actress. I’m a huge fan of Billie Holiday. The worst thing I could imagine was putting a stain on her legacy with a terrible performance. Andra Day is the latest singer to take the plunge into acting, making her feature film debut in the upcoming Hulu drama “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” The “Rise Up” singer plays Billie Holiday in the biopic, which centers on the legendary singer’s struggles with addiction and her experience being targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics. Day performs with her own vocals on Holiday’s biggest hits throughout, but there is also an original song at the end of the film titled “Tigress & Tweed,” written by Day and Raphael Saadiq.
“Tigress & Tweed” evokes Holiday’s most haunting record, “Strange Fruit,” about the lynching of Black Americans. The original song begins with Day even referencing “Strange Fruit” directly: “Say a prayer for me. Strange fruit, come down off that tree.” The song blends jazzy roots with a more modern hip-hop beat, bringing Holiday’s past struggles to the present.

Frank Abney says the idea for his animated short feature and Oscar hopeful “Canvas” was born out of a need to make a film that was personal.
Six years ago, the animator, whose credits include Pixar titles “Soul,” “Coco,” “Toy Story 4” and “Incredibles 2,” felt he was nevertheless experiencing a rough patch creatively. “I was trying to navigate the industry, and we struggle as artists,” Abney says. “I knew when I created something, I wanted it to be unique to my situation.”
Watching his young niece and observing her carefree nature, he devised a family film in which generations help each other. Abney lost his father when he was 5 and witnessed his mother sharing his grief, his grandfather at her side. “I was curious [about my grandfather] because he was always quiet and withdrawn when I was around him,” Abney says.

One of the last Oscar contenders to drop this season is someone’s first film. Andra Day makes her feature film debut in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and could very well be the 17th big-screen newcomer to land a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Just four people have won Best Actress for their film debuts — Shirley Booth (“Come Back, Little Sheba,” 1952), Julie Andrews (“Mary Poppins,” 1964), Barbra Streisand (“Funny Girl,” 1968) and Marlee Matlin — but 12 others scored nominations. There have been five instances in this century alone: Keisha Castle-Hughes (“Whale Rider,” 2003), Catalina Sandino Moreno (“Maria Full of Grace,” 2004), Gabourey Sidibe, Quvenzhane Wallis and most recently Yalitza Aparicio.
Day wouldn’t be an out-of-nowhere discovery like Castle-Hughes, Wallis — both of whom became the category’s youngest nominee, a record Wallis, who was 9 at the time, still holds — and Aparicio, but more in the vein of Booth, Andrews and Streisand, all of whom...

If you’ve spent any time at all in Stars Hollow, the plot of Netflix’s new series Ginny & Georgia might sound kind of familiar.
The streamer released a series of first-look photos for the hour-long dramedy on Thursday, along with a premiere date: The 10-episode freshman season will debut Wednesday, Feb. 24. Ginny & Georgia stars Antonia Gentry (Raising Dion) as Ginny, an awkward 15-year-old girl who often feels outshined by her vivacious 30-year-old mom Georgia, played by Brianna Howey (Batwoman, The Exorcist). Do you hear that, too, Gilmore Girls fans? Yep, we’re definitely sensing some Lorelai-and-Rory vibes here.

It’s not always easy for a recording artist to transition to awards recognition for acting, but it happened in recent years for Oscar nominees Mary J. Blige (“Mudbound”) and Lady Gaga (“A Star is Born”). Now it could happen for R&b singer Andra Day, who has steadily been rising in our Best Actress odds for her title role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” Do you agree with our current odds that she’ll make the cut?
Day is best known as the Grammy-nominated singer of “Rise Up,” and she also sang the Oscar-nominated song “Stand Up for Something” from the 2017 film “Marshall.” In this film she plays legendary musician Billie Holiday at a time when she was the target of an undercover sting operation by federal narcotics agents. Saddle up! The Seahorse could be swimming all the way to the winner’s circle on Season 4 of “The Masked Singer.” The whimsical fish has proven she has the voice to win it all after securing her spot in the Super Six by winning the Group B finals on the Fox reality TV singing competition. After belting out three performances to date, the Seahorse advanced to the Super Six as the top vote-getter on Episode 8 and is now considered one of the favorites to win the Golden Mask trophy.
The Seahorse made a big splash when she debuted on Episode 2 singing “Only Girl (In the World)” by pop superstar Rihanna. She commanded the stage with sex appeal and vocal gymnastics, prompting panelist Nicole Scherzinger to predict, “We might be looking at the winner of Season 4 right now.” In Episode 4 she slowed things down with a powerhouse rendition of “My Heart...

Can the crooning Crocodile come from behind and eat up the competition on his way to the coveted Golden Mask trophy on “The Masked Singer”? After the Seahorse swam past him on her way to the Super Six by earning the most votes in the Group B finals, the bedazzled amphibian advanced along with her by placing second. Now the Crocodile is within striking distance of a Season 4 victory.
The Crocodile first crawled onto the stage in Episode 2, singing “It’s My Life” by the rock group Bon Jovi. His natural stage presence and familiar, raspy vocals led the panelists to believe the cold-blooded singer was from a boy band. In Episode 4 the Crocodile proved he was an all-around entertainer when he busted out some serious dance moves to Britney Spears‘ hit “Toxic.” He slowed things down for the Group B finals, showing a more vulnerable side as he belted out “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis,...

In a break from tradition, “The Masked Singer” will air a special turkey-themed episode this week on Thanksgiving Day, bypassing its normal Wednesday schedule. On the night of Thursday, November 26, gather the family and join panelists Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Robin Thicke, plus guest judge Jay Pharoah, for the Group C finals. That’s when Broccoli, Jellyfish and Mushroom will give it their all on the stage, with two advancing to the Super Six; the third will be eliminated and forced to unmask in front of America.

During “The Masked Singer’s” Group B finals, Nicole Scherzinger was the only panelist to correctly guess Dr. Elvis Francois was hiding inside the Serpent costume. So how’d she know his secret identity? As it turns out, Nicole recently sang a virtual rendition of “Rise Up” with Dr. Elvis on the post-show program “After the Mask” (watch above). When the Serpent hissed that he’d performed a duet with one of the panelists before, Nicole immediately realized the clue was about her and so she correctly named the doctor as her final guess.

That was the motto of the video that introduced Joe Biden on the final night of the virtual Democratic National Convention, and showed just how the Covid-19 forced transformation of a national tradition could produce something in many cases more intimate.
Far from the cheering crowd of delegates that have characterized American political conventions for decades, the former vice president’s big night was the culmination of finely tuned narrative for what is shaping up to be the first small-screen campaign.
And as much as the ex-Veep focused on the failures and cruelties of the past four years, Joe Biden did not actually say Donald Trump’s name once in his acceptance speech – another unconventional move in what has been termed an “unconventional convention.”

Joe Biden raised money at a star-filled virtual fundraiser on Thursday that included performances by Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Andra Day, jokes from Jay Leno, and a scathing rebuke of Donald Trump by Barbra Streisand.
“Think of how many lives could have been saved if he had paid attention to the warnings and acted earlier,” Streisand said of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a pool report. “In other words, Donald Trump is dangerous to our health. We cannot afford four more years of malice, division and lies, and neither can our planet.”
She added, “We don’t need a bully as a president who picks fights and rules by retaliation. Let’s face it: Trump is unfit mentally and morally to hold this office.”
About 600 people joined the event, which raised money for the Biden Victory Fund, a joint committee of the campaign and the Democratic National Committee, with tickets priced at $2,800 per person.
