Easily the best episode yet
jikboersma24 November 2023
Ok, it's been a while since I watched the Monsterverse movies, but I really loved them. I went into this series with high hopes, but was very bored by the first episode and minimally engaged for the second one. But I decided to keep going.

As I somewhat expected, the thing that convinced me to turn this episode on ended up being the best part of it. I'm talking, of course, about the great Kurt Russell. He brought a ton of charisma, and matches up well with Wyatt's version of the character, demonstrated the growth that has evidently happened in the period between the timelines.

I still am not loving the young characters in the 2015 storyline, but their interactions with Kurt have made them bearable and a lot more fun. The characters in the 50's storyline remain strong, and I continue to appreciate Anders Holm as the best actor in the series (other than Kurt, of course).

Also, we got more of the big guy in this episode, and that's always fun.

This episode was a masterpiece, and the last few minutes really had me on edge. The cliffhanger was great, and I am really excited to tune in again next week.

Good, but a downgrade also ....

Third episode of Monsterverse's most awaited series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is premereired and here's my thoughts on this episode i.e. "Secrets and Lies":-

Positives :-

1. Writing of this episode is good.

2. CGI and visuals are great.

3. Cinematography are very good.

4. Production budget looks very high, and you could feel it in cinematography, color grading, visuals etc.

5. Casting performance is also great especially Wyatt and Kurt Russell.

6. Background scores is on fire.

Negatives:-

1. Somewhat downgrade to it's previous two episodes.

2. Slightly less interesting episode.

Final Thoughts and Review :-

Overall, "Secret and Lies" is a good episode continuing the story of previous two episodes. Despite being many advantages I somewhat feel a downgrade from previous ones.

Shaw is the standout in both eras
nerrdrage30 December 2023
The flashback 50s continues to be the most interesting part of this show, and Wyatt Russell is the best of the trio, maybe because of his acting skill.

The modern day sequence has gotten an upgrade with Kurt Russell, who definitely does not look 90 but they handle that in a throwaway line, so okay.

The modern sequence is basically, watch Old Shaw drag along some useless, squabbling younguns in his wake while battling interesting-looking monsters in interesting-looking landscapes.

It looks like they're not hewing to realistic critters for the monsters, just scaled up, but are being more creative. I guess that's okay.

flying from South Korea to Canada in an old propeller plane is a bit much

I don't expect coherence from a monster movie, but flying from South Korea to Canada in an old propeller plane is a bit much. Didn't the writers use Google to find out the distance?

It's almost 15,000 km crossing several countries and the Atlantic Ocean...lol. The teen drama also became forced and boring.

They do not know what this should be

Actually the first episodes started pretty decent. Some monsters, some characters... kinda ok for me. But now, several episodes in... what is this and why is it so boring? I understand why characters need to develop, but why is this then called Godzilla?? People expect monsters and damage big time... There a many plot holes and silly stuff... Why is a character leaving with the car incognito mode when the others sitting in the car in front of there home?? Why are they flying from South Korea to Canada in an old plane? Does this family story provides anything worth to the plot??

All in All a pretty bad show. Was expecting way more. Sad and missed opportunity.
