Why Col Fawcett and Lost in the Amazon matters
gryphonproductions-110 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I am the show's producer and responding to an existing review on this site. Some may find the following discussion of the making of the film to be a Spoiler- so just letting you know.

The fate of Col Percy Fawcett and his son and best friend, is a little like the Amelia Earhart story...it's an eternal mystery, but we can today (thanks to our extensive research) get much much closer to the truth.

We do know that Col Fawcett was looking for an ancient civilization- and proof of a large city in Brazil's interior regions...when he disappeared. This documentary, Lost in the Amazon was the result of extensive research and hitherto amazing access to the Fawcett family and the personal logs, diaries and maps of Col Fawcett. Our research allowed us to be the first group (more than 100 tried and many died looking) to re- trace Fawcett's route and come up with not only key signposts of his journey but actual personal artifacts never before seen or spoken of, details of what actually was Fawcett's true mission, and even proof of the location of his final camp- thereby changing all previous theories about Fawcett's death: where, when, how and so on. Thus our show does in fact resolve the mystery of Col Fawcett- to the greatest extent possible: in the same way that Amelia Earhart's plane or body has not been found- we have a very good idea now of what happened to her- based on the latest evidence and research. And so I would not be talked out of watching this program, because there is no proof- there is plenty of proof in this fascinating, award-winning documentary of what happened to Col Percy Fawcett- it is in fact the best examination of what happened to the man and the rest of his party. We enjoyed going on the adventure and bringing it to you!

A bit anticlimactic....
planktonrules4 October 2011
Percy Fawcett is a name few would remember today. According to this show, he was sort of like a real-life Indiana Jones--who traveled to various wild locales where no white man had been before. However, in 1925, while looking for a legendary city like El Dorado which he called 'Z', he and his two companions disappeared. Today the folks who made this documentary are looking for signs of him or perhaps the city.

Like so many PBS documentaries, this one was told through narration, old photos and film footage and LOTS of modern recreations. Niall McCann, a handsome Welsh biologist, heads up the search while narrator Liev Schreiber got to stay home and take it easy! Unfortunately, as it turns out, Fawcett's death was STILL a complete mystery by the end of the show--and this detracted some from my enjoyment of the how. While it was mildly enjoyable seeing McCann and his friends trying to retrace Fawcett's steps, the payoff was missing. As a result, I need to knock off a few points for being so anticlimactic.
