it tried
joejeffery-5422219 March 2023
Honestly could have been a great show if they had let the choreographers pick their own music because we see some get really dull music which makes it hard to create pieces that are enjoyable.

Choreographers should have created pieces to their strengths to solidify the competition and on top of that the audience should have had a say too because some of the dancers get biased as we can see some not voting for their choreographer because "it was too tiring" yet the piece was really good. So should they have it easy?

The show though had its heart in the right place but had some errors that needed rectification.

Interesting concept with several flaws
kat-o-nine-lives19 March 2023
I would love to see this done with the choreographers getting to choose their own music and being able to switch out dancers that are being a pain. One of the "100" (Johnny) seems to be chosen almost every episode to give his (usually snarky, often negative) feedback on the dances. I suppose for "drama." Also, in earlier episodes especially, the camerawork doesn't allow us to enjoy the dances, with frequent angle and distance changes and cuts to the audience, sometimes every few seconds. At least that seems to get better after the first few episodes. Definitely has potential, but not there yet.

Wish I could see the dancers feet!
jolenehx2 April 2023
I love this format and am really enjoying the show, the camera doesn't show enough of the dancers feet! It's a dance show. Surely seeing a full view of the dancers feet is imperative to making a judgement. I'm still only on my first episode so I don't know if there will be more contemporary dances; there would definitely need to be more clear footage of all the body movements and especially the feet. It seems so far that facial expressions and audience reactions are the main visual objectives. This is certainly not agt standard of quality viewing. I will keep watching though. Don't judge a book.

So You Think You Can Choreograph
nanoth21 March 2023
I love the concept but the editing leaves a lot to be desired. I am only giving it a high score for the sake of some of the routines which were amazing and the dancers are very talented. I hope to see a better edited, scripted, judged 2nd season. The concept of the dancers judging the contestants is very cool but please don't just show 3 of them... The camera angles should be rearranged and the challenges could be better explained so that we can also get more engaged in the creative process. It gets better by the final but at that point you might just stop watching as the first episodes are a mess.

Greatly flawed, but with some great dances
Hallelujah28926 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Dance 100" is lucky it's a streaming show because the fast forward option is built in. There's a good show in here, but it's buried in far too lengthy segments such as a couple full length dance numbers irrelevant to the competition, biography stories that slow the momentum, etc. Fluff, basically. I was only really interested in seeing the dance numbers of the contestants.

I say there's a good show, but what I mean is there's talented choreographers with some fire dance numbers. But some of the choreographers got axed too early because of the rudimentary voting mechanics. At a certain point it doesn't make sense any longer to have the 100 dancers decide who gets to stay, especially with frequent double eliminations upping the ante. It's not a business show, so why encourage choreographers to instill loyalty in the dancers to bias their votes. Some of the dancers certainly seemed like they could be petty. And the host kept shining the spotlight on the pot stirrers, or the hype people. Some of the feedback was helpful and analytical, but at a certain point I really wanted the feedback of other choreographers or judges who could offer more critical analysis.

I also think it's odd that the choreographers always had to dance in their dance numbers. This probably helped eliminate an overweight choreographer early. It just seems unusual to have a dance and choreographer challenge at the same time. Because then an attribute of winning dances became about featuring the choreographer in the dance, all the time. Why? Unnecessary.

One of the formats of the show was to ask the dancers for their critique of the dance, then ask the choreographers what they thought of that critique. And it just became tired and repetitive having the choreographers try to say all the right things in thanking the dancers. Because they had no choice-the dancers decided who stayed or went home. Sometimes the audience had different opinions, but their opinion literally never mattered, while the choreographers also sometimes deflected to them. Which was also just empty pandering.

Adding more dancers to each level of the competition was interesting and epic, until in my opinion the best choreographer was voted off and the finale was left to two choreographers who couldn't handle the large numbers. Bummer, but that's the foresight of the 100 dancers who voted, and the dumb criteria they had to vote on, completely disregarding who did the best in the entirety of the show, not just the last dual challenges. If there was a judge, maybe they could've corrected that.

Also a shame that some choreographers got obviously better songs, concepts, or styles that fit their own to work with. At some post there should've been more controls, such as giving the same theme or song or prop to work with.

Giving the same theme happened only once with a dance battle that I felt wasn't judged fairly either by the 100 dancers. At least the rule they used to judge the dance battle was inconsistent with the rule they used to judge who was going to be the finalists, as they seemed to take into account the entire body of work at that time. It certainly felt like the 100 dancers was making up their minds about the judging criteria as they went along.

New competition shows usually do have large inconsistencies in their formation seasons. I think my aggravation comes from seeing the choreographer who I felt had the most integrity, genuine people skills and maturity, lose out because the show hasn't figured out how it wants to be yet.

Going forward I wish for a different host as she kept setting the tone for the feedback and giving her feedback first. She should've been more neutral and allowed the dancers/judges to lead with their own natural responses.

Good concept, poor execution
kkmgirl-448-11198819 March 2023
I'm fussy about dance shows and was hoping this would please, but it ended up being more frustrating than entertaining. I like the concept and it could have been successful, but the production was all wrong. I was expecting "World of Dance" and got an MTV video with CW drama. I came for the dancing but saw more of the audience (why??) and could hardly see the routines for the constant wide angle and zoom shots. Add smoke and dark lighting, and it was usually pointless. I was curious to learn more about the 8 choreographers professional background but there wasn't much meat there. The "world class 100" consisted of a variety of people but only about 5 got all the camera time. One reviewer said everyone on the show was American (and therefore bad I guess?), however they must have had it on mute because the majority of dancers (that spoke) were from another country. There was the requisite drama thrown in (completely unnecessary) and the usual filler to drag out 8 episodes. I didn't like that the songs were chosen for them (some really odd choices) and that it all felt one note- same dance style/moves over and over again. I come from a contemporary dance background, but I appreciate all styles which made World of Dance so engaging. I quickly grew tired of the frenetic bumping and grinding that is fine only in small doses. There were moments of creativity, but not enough to make this satisfying. In fact, the one choreographer that was a bit of a creative oddball was voted off fairly quickly. I'll watch the finale, but I would never watch a second season of this without drastic changes.

Where's the dance?
ztempler18 March 2023
This show is supposed the be featuring dancers - and there are so many really talented ones. And the competition is to select the best out of 8 choreographers. But instead of letting the viewers appreciate the dance, we get constant, and way, way too many, cuts away to audience reactions. Plus cameras zooming around and OUT from the stage so it's impossible to watch and appreciate these talented dancers. C'mon directors - I've tuned in to watch dance!! Not audience and not swooping cameras!! There is a really missed opportunity here for an entertaining show. If there is another season, I'm hoping they will take on board suggestions to feature dancers please. And calm down that camera.

How to NOT direct a dance show
pajapan19 March 2023
It's mind-boggling how wrongly this show was directed.

Zoom ins and zoom outs, fast cuts to nowhere. Showing the audience at key moments instead of the dancers (ie Brandi's reveal in the second to last episode happened off camera).

Directing a dance show is not about getting the action from multiple angles. It's about focusing on what's important and letting the viewers see the whole picture.

Ironically, the best way to direct a dance show is by doing it in the simplest possible way. A camera, in the middle, at a zoom level that shows everything and is as close as possible.

It's like being in the theater. What's the best seat? Smack in the middle of the room. Directing a dance show is about being brutally minimalistic with your directing choices.

Netflix produced a show that looked great if you attended the live show but looks terrible on the screen.

Plus, not letting the choreographers choose their own songs and at the same time giving them songs that fall more or less into the same genre made it even worse. Oh, and those cheesy, uninspired story themes? Who chose these?

Potential was there, presentation was not.
waitresstyles18 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Right away From episode 1 there are clear issues with the show, that even stand out to the audience: the first major issue is the dancer to choreographer relationship. The choreographers are all stressed and taking it on on the dancers and there are clear biases between the dancers disliking the choreographers, and then when the judges ask the dancers what they thought, they politely attack the choreographers as they smile and nod, this interaction is so awkward to watch as an audience. I feel like in watching bad reality tv. I clicked on the show out of interest in competition shows and stopped after the first episode, this show is made for a clear one audience, young dancers only. Watching these choreographers and dancers stress and freak out at and over each other is something non dancers won't comprehend, the amount of stress that comes with this. As a non dancer I find myself laughing watching this and confused as to what the hell the point of the show is. Reality tv? Actual dancing? Acting? Just the money? And the episodes are to long, they had an idea for a show and rushed it and that is very clear by the hour long episodes with barely anything included in them, just the dances and random clips in between. It's not very entertaining and the episode feels so long. Look it's not a bad show, but it isn't good either. I wouldn't recommend it.

Could have been cool...
melissadamico-1464118 March 2023
Concept awesome! These dancers, choreographers are super talented, and I am super envious of what they can do however.

Dance 100 are very critical of choreographers. It's painful to hear what they have to say sometimes. There's nothing different between the dance 100 and the choreographers because the choreographers are just like them! Dancers! I think it's so unfair!. Choreographers just got the chance to make the show.

I don't really see any different type of dancing. It's like one style different formations. Other dance shows had all different styles. Could look different in person idk.

REX- to me is the best! And everyone doesn't like him.

I was expecting better...
sherripadgitt19 March 2023
At the beginning of episode 2 when noone stood behind the heavier dancer, I decided then and there to stop watching. She was just as talented as the others. With that said, I found the show very boring. I thought I was going to watch outstanding dance routines, but instead I felt a bit agitated and wanted to rush through the show just to get to see the routines. I didn't want to see a bunch of chit chat or antagonism between dancers. That part was especially demoralizing to me, to see other dancers criticize the routines when they are peers to the choreographers. They are the same. They just were not chosen to choregraph the routine. I didn't get that.

So they need to extend the dancing part on the show, cut back on the backstage stuff and give people what they want to see: more dancing. Kind of like World of Dance where you get to see straight on, the routine. Not cutting in and out and away from the stage. Also give the bigger choreographers a chance. That was awful. Not even one person stood behind her. I call BS on that.

The song's could've been more diverse
sajecha21 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't like that the dancers were also the voters and judges and their votes were way off at times. Rex was a very good choreographer and was voted off because of comments from Jamal who was a hater for all he danced for. He had a negative comment for Rex when he was dancing for him and when Rex was voted off and Jamal was placed with Keenan whom he liked before, he was then hating on Keenan.

I think that the audience should also have had a say so in the voting to see popular votes or at least not have the votes on stage like that because I can see how people can be swayed from voting for another person because they don't want to be judged by the others.

Also the behind the scene comments from the dancers were unnecessary because this was not about the dancers but the choreography and choreographers.

I also didn't like that they used the same dancers over and over since they could potentially sabotage the choreography just to vote off the choreographer.

I think that the songs were too similar and so it made the dances similar as well. I think there should've been mashup songs instead of radio songs where viewers have already seen the music video of said song because I found myself singing the lyrics and not focusing on the dance.

My favorite choreographers in this order were Rex, Keenan, Brandi, Janick, Max, Rudy, Celine, & Akira. I really couldn't judge Akira fairly she left too soon.

I don't like that almost every contest show the first episode is an elimination round. Can we give them some time to take in feedback then see what they do with it after the first round.

Lastly, I didn't think only 6 episodes was enough time to get to know the contestants although I know that the show in itself was longer considering the amount of people and in the finale the dancers had to learn four different routines.

Doesn't work
srevuelt24 March 2023
The show doesn't work for 1 simple reason, it's not clear what criteria the dancers are judging the choreographers on other than they don't like them/their personality, or the way they communicate their vision, however that does not mean the dancers are voting for the best routines at all. It's disappointing as a viewer to see fun or artistic performances be judged so harshly, and to see choreographers that are pushing the dancers and delivering great performances be voted off for being "tough," in any industry leaders push us out of our comfort zones to reach greater levels. The show could have worked if there was a clearer judging criteria like points, or additional judges, or if there was an added element like the public could vote in addition to the dancers. At the end of the day, a performance is as good as the choreography, the execution, and how it is received by the audience. The dancers have 1 perspective, but they are biased because they are voting based on interpersonal relationships and not just purely on the execution of the dances.

I wanted to love it BUT not the best ...
csab-3979723 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
100 dancers yet they focus on a few drama queens critique. Seemed more like a popularity contest. I don't think they had enough versatile dancers.. yes it's street, but I've seen some better riskier dancers on the subway. And to the comment about it being all American dancers??? Did you not hear the British accents ?? They were from America and the UK.. not the world but stop with the trashing "America ego".. it's a small Dance show not that serious. I actually laughed at the $100k .. by the time they tax that the winner will get about 40k$ better then nothing but hardly a life changer to these young dancers who many have already had dance contracts.

Also the whole "Music Box" is not fair. The first episode 2 girls are given slower songs and the others are given typical dance music.. totally different .. of course the slower ones are not going to be as high energy but at least there's some thought behind it. The other ones were all doing the same thing. Actually the bigger African American girl from NYC who had no one stand behind her shocked me! She was the only one to take a risk ..albeit hard to see with the poor camera angles.

Then the voting by the dancers?? I'm sorry but if you were in the dance how do you know what it looked like from the audiences perspective ? Isn't choreography about the whole package ?

Did the dancers get to see the dance and they not tell the viewers? I just don't see how you can make a proper vote?!

Which brings me to the editing! How hard is it to just keep a camera aimed at the dancers during a routine? It was literally so annoying... and I ended up just clicking on the finale and I do think the best person won overall. Definitely a talented dancer and choreographer .. would have like to see more of the dancing and less of the crowd or stupid high school drama . Felt very amateur. Maybe it's meant for those under 30.

I love So You Think You Can Dance and other dance shows (I love dance in general) but I give this a meh.

Real Review Here.
monicadiluca21 March 2023
No introductions to anything.

5 mins into the first episode and we've already started a dance and the crowd is being way too disrespectful for me to continue watching.

STFU while the performances are happening. Scream your heads off after. It's common courtesy folks.

I'm surprised the production team didn't think about that...

It's difficult and distracting to hear people screaming instead of hearing the music while watching the movements. All I was watching was movement...

Weird production too. Don't even introduce anyone. Just get right into it. Do better netflix.

Using characters now..

Choreography competition
beanikins27 March 2023
It's more of a choreography competition than dance contest. And the judges being the dancers who become a team with each competitor, seems hard not to be biased. The song selections would have been better if made by the choreographer. Sometimes the song distribution seemed unfair, giving one a hyped up song & another almost a slow jam. At least give them a menu of songs to choose from, but let them choose. Also at times the view of the stage, angles and lighting felt empty. Dance is one of the greatest things in life, an expression of experience or emotion, a story, a set of wings...air. If you love dance you know what I'm saying. Usually with dance I can't take my eyes away but with this show after several episodes, if I missed a moment I didn't care. Usually I'm backing dance scenes up to see them again to relive how awesome it was. This I didn't rewind any routine. The show's aaaaiiight.

Competitive Dance show all about the Drama
beaulieutrav28 March 2023
Concept had potential but netflix has no clue how to direct a dance competition. They focused heavily on creating drama instead of focusing on the competition and choreography of dancing. Also the major flaw was them not knowing how to use the cameras properly while they were dancing, why use close-ups on faces when the point of the show is to see their body movement?.Iget capturing facial expression but again, timing is everything for a dance show... also feel the voting aspect of the show is very unnecessary, again, seems like they can't decide what they want to be, a dance show or a reality drama series. Would not recommend.

If you've seen World of Dance or SYTYCD, don't watch this
rpetersr23 September 2023
Finalists were awesome. Really awful directing and editing though. There were routines where you won't see the end because the cameras were on an audience member's reaction. I feel like the director didn't take note during the dress rehearsal.

This won't be getting any technical emmy's either. Some focal dancers can't be seen sometime because they were flooded by light or drowning in fog.

If you found World of Dance and So You Think You Can Dance entertaining, you'll be underwhelmed by this.

Oh, plus I don't believe their claim that they picked the Top 100 professional dancers in the world.

Same old same old
georgieab20 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ok so choreographers and worlds best dancers? Who decided that because these were all very amateurish. Now granted there is no way I could do what they do but then I am not trying too and there are better out there. I explained to someone that these are choreographers and worlds best dancers in the same way someone went out bought a keyboard, software, watched some videos, and critiqued some songs and now call themselves producers. I wonder if I went bought an easel, painting supplies, painted a line could I then call myself an artist?

The premise of the show was, cookie cutter and I was hoping it would have a new spin to it. It didn't. Don't get me wrong, it was actually ok to have running while I did my house cleaning but that was it. At the end I have no clue who anyone is, it was not that engaging.

I'm sure if more effort was put into it, it might have been more interesting to watch, but as it is it is not good.

Maybe try something different next time.

Dead show.
sagartapial23 March 2023
Creative direction dead.

Song choice some of them are great but not allowing the dancers the freedom to choose their own songs dead.

Shots and angle, super dead. Dance doesn't need fast action shots. It requires minimum cam movement so that you can track the dancers movement and gain an understanding of their movement.

Show formatting even more tragedy. The voting system is so flawed. The 100 dancers have to not only critique but also vote and if they don't vote for the person they danced with it creates drama so much so that one of the contestants started by deleting dancers from group chats because they decided to vote for other dancers, how weak is that. Clearly you shouldn't be able to vote for the dancer you danced for so to keep it impartial and so that it's not a popularity/loyalty contest.

Honestly save yourself some energy, the choreography never seems to be the highlight as it's overcast by so much bull, dumb camera direction mixed with silly drama. How did they mess up a dance show. There's been a plethora of great ones to follow from; so you think you can dance to world of dance (both the show & event) to even just YouTube dance battles. Legit put in the bin and start again. Clearly geared to one type of mind and there was no diversity in dance style nor types of characters; everyone preaching diversity, inclusion and the other buzzwords but everyone looked and sounded like each other. Just feel sorry for the few choreographers and dancers from the show who need the opportunity because they have something to showcase.

Disappointing!
rjwczkbqtz25 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First of, the show didn't even start with introductions. It just got straight on to dancing. The idea of the show was great but the execution felt rushed and not thought through. I didn't like how some dancers got more screen time dancing and talking than others. Dancers did not have the best angle of the stage therefore some criticism given was not accurate. Crowd also should have been told not to be loud during performances so all dancers could focus. I did not like how the choreographers did not get to pick their song, therefor the song choices were also unfair for certain people. Everything was unorganized and and not thought through on this as well I said before. Also the order that the dancers went on stage was unfair connecting to the voting system because Keenan went first the most out of all the dancers throughout the whole show and came in second. I do disagree with the final decision of the show but that has nothing to do with this review. Finally I want to say that the voting system was also odd and dancers should have not been able to vote for the choreographer they worked with because that changed the show entirely. I do feel as Keenan and Max were my top two because in my opinion they both brought it through they whole show as Brandi only started to show up in the end to finish the race. To me there could have been a more variety of dance styles as I only saw mainly hip hop. Overall I did not like this show and do not recommend spending your time watching it. I may try to watch a season two if they have one to see if the show has improved. But if not I will definitely not watch more that one episode. Thank you for reading.

Dull Stuff
hilary_mae-912-8056118 March 2023
These shows got old, real fast. The format is regurgitated over and over again. This one..."the best dancers from around the world"...and they're all American. Spare us from the American ego.

I found it very boring. Dancing it said, yet it all looks like exercise routines I do at the gym - it's all the same and while yes, it does take practice and dedication, it's boring. Might as well hit the gym and just watch people work out. Running on the spot is not dancing. Sometimes it was like watching drunk cheerleaders. Ugh.

They all move...T H E S A M E and they all look like exercise routines. Yawn.

Too much ghetto - yawn. The world is wide open and wonderful, yet here we go - once again the Americans spotlight ghetto exercise as talent. A lot of the moves are old; seriously, Michael Jackson has been dead for ages and so are his moves. Get over it. The moves were messy and all over the place. The foot work, well, there was none really, just untidy steps flopping around the stage.

Listening to the dancers ghetto chat ...spare us the classless exhibition. I couldn't take this serious AT ALL. In the real world of dance, that ego nonsense wouldn't be tolerated.

The host has a contrived, stiff personality which she tries to mask with ghetto talk and poor diction.

The audience behave like background actors.

The camera work is a chaotic mess: stage, audience, body parts, audience, audience, audience.

I skipped through to see if it would improve; it did not. Everyone acts so low to no class. Overall it is absolutely and painfully tedious to watch.

Winner totally deserved to win.
erhanipekciler31 May 2023
I really love dance shows and when I watched that on Netflix I added my list, finally I finished yesterday. I can say it was good but not perfect. First of all I didn't like the camera angles because I didn't see all dancers and 25 or 100 dancers is really difficult to watch in one scene. Second thing there were some dancers for comment and really role stealer, always negative and they made me annoyed. ( i dont remember the names) Brandi was just perfect and so talented, she deserved to win and last 2 choreography were brilliant. I love black circus theme so much. When I look at the total, I will not say wooooww, that was perfect or super creative choreos, nothing new actually but as I told you first, I like to watch dance and pleasure to watch..

Problematic in so many ways
gabrielleprato19 March 2024
As a former competitive dancer (15 years) and lover of all things dance, I have been a fan of SYTYCD, DWTS and WOD over the years; I was so excited to see another new dance show that promised a new format focused on choreography. Sadly, I can honestly say the only good thing about this show is Ally Love (I love you girl and take your Peloton Barre classes weekly!) There are so many issues with this show in my opinion...first of all the format of having the dancers judge the choreography...like what? All dancers are not choreographers that seems so strange to me. It also puts both the dancers and choreographers in an awkward position. The dancers need to judge the choreographer they may or may not have worked with but since they aren't choreographers they can't give constructive feedback. Plus, I felt some of the dancers comments and attitudes were unprofessional and disrespectful to the choreographer - who would want to work with someone like that?

Secondly maybe this is an unpopular opinion but the dancing itself was meh most of the time. I don't know where they found these "100 best dancers in the world," but everyone seemed to have varying levels and technical abilities and someone u think even mentioned at one point that they only had two technical dancers in their group. So confusing, if this is supposed to be a show about judging professional choreography should there not also be professional or semi professional dancers dancing? And why did they make the choreographer dance in the dance? Just so weird all around.

Thirdly, the way Akira was treated was horrendous and so offensive. I didn't think she deserved that - her dance wasn't worse than anyone else many dances felt all over the place and amateurish (sorry) and she was the only one who actually focused on storytelling. It was giving fatphobia and prejudice and I wasn't here for it at all. I honestly wanted to stop watching after episode one but I'm curious to see if the choreography and dancing improved.

I literally made an IMDB account to comment on this because it was just so disappointing, I will stick to watching SYTYCD and DWTS but seriously would love a choreography competition show in a different format. Like have them choreograph for different purposes (e.g. A broadway show, a music video, etc.) and actually have people more like Keenan who are professionals or semi professional with actual dancers and actual judges. :) thanks for coming to my Ted Talk!

Awful
Zaraqael11 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the episodes in one piece and didn't like it at all.

Everything in the show is messed up. The voting system is completely stupid. If votes are cast openly and one after the other, it doesn't make any sense. The audience is annoying and the cheers sound fake. Camera and editing are confusing. You can't see the whole performance, everything is unclear. As the show progresses, there is a lack of explanations about how the show is going.

You don't get to see anything of the exciting stuff, the training with the dancers and the inventing of a choreography.

It was strange that all choreographers got very different songs. I didn't understand why the number of dancers was constantly increased. This made the dances feel less and less creative.

But the dancers were the worst. They were mostly unsympathetic, their praise and criticism was mostly empty of content and arbitrary. One had the feeling that the sympathy for the choreographer counted and not the performance.

After this show, no one can feel like becoming a dancer or choreographer.
