From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

What makes a live service game successful? The constant cosmetics update in Fortnite is one way, while Helldivers 2 won’t ask for all your cash if you want to win, but will make you grind. The success of these kinds of games lingers on several elements, likely the most important is keeping players engaged and offering fair monetization.
Many live-service games have become a standard in the genre, but there are so many that have fallen faster than a Supply Llama in Fortnite with a faulty parachute.

After exploring the American frontier in Andrew Haigh’s Lean on Pete, Charlie Plummer returns to the terrain with Luke Gilford’s directorial debut National Anthem. Premiering at last year’s SXSW, the film follows a construction worker who joins a community of queer rodeo performers searching for their own version of the American dream. While working on a ranch in the Southwest, they contend with the undeniable forces of nature, family and love. Also starring Eve Lindley and Mason Alexander Park, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a June 12 release from Variance Films.
Jake Kring-Schreifels said in his review, “National Anthem is an offshoot of Gilford’s 2020 photographic series, which showcased the beauty of America’s Queer Rodeo by foregrounding softly lit and often-hidden subjects against expansive New Mexican vistas. At a time of political polarization and in a space typically reserved for a more traditional, patriarchal idea of a cowboy,...

Randeep Hooda, known for his versatile acting skills, has recently ventured into directing with his debut film ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’. The movie has garnered a positive response, particularly for its unique approach to honoring the forgotten stories of freedom fighters. One such innovative aspect is the AI-generated National Anthem created by the film’s team on the occasion of Martyr’s Day.
The National Anthem used in ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ serves as a tribute to various freedom fighters whose narratives have faded from mainstream historical accounts. These include names like V. D. Savarkar, Vasudev Balwant Phadke, Lala Hardyal, Shyamji Verma, Ganesh Babarao Savarkar, Madanlal Dhingra, Khudiram Bose, Chapekar Brothers, Anant Kanhere, and Madam Bhikaji Cama.
Randeep Hooda expressed his thoughts on this AI-generated rendition, emphasizing the importance of bringing to light the stories of India’s unsung heroes. He stated, “Our team has worked on a unique AI-created national anthem...

Marvel’s Spider-Man was said to be the first part of Marvel’s shared gaming universe, Iron Man jumpstarted the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008 and has elevated the genre since; and Insomniac Games aims to replicate the same success through this format. It didn’t take long for other studios to take these iconic characters and give them their own video game.
There was a recent surge of superhero titles in the gaming industry, and while most are decent, there were noticeable disasters like Marvel’s Avengers. This setback may have been a factor in the cancellation of Spider-Man: The Great Web.
In a recent interview, Ms. Marvel herself, Iman Vellani, shared her criticisms about the game, saying it should have been a success if it weren’t repetitive, and some suggest it shouldn’t have taken the live-service route.

Deaf artists Anjel Piñero, Shaheem Sanchez and Daniel Durant were set to perform Asl during this year’s Super Bowl — but viewers watching the CBS telecast may not have actually seen them on air. That’s according to Oscar winner and Deaf actor Marlee Matlin, who expressed her frustration with the network on social media.
“I am absolutely Shocked at CBS for introducing the Deaf performers at today’s pregame #SuperBowl and then not showing even one second (or more) of their performance… as has been tradition for the last 30 years. Why!?”

Recently, several outlets had the chance to participate in a hands-on preview of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League: the latest game from Batman Arkham developer Rocksteady Studios. Typically, such hands-on previews are defined by (or even derided for) the necessity of their neutrality. They are not meant to be reviews of the final game, which means that they rarely deliver strong impressions one way or the other. However, many of those Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League previews are uniquely negative in ways that have fans fearing the worst.
For instance, IGN’s preview begins with the surprisingly blunt headline “We played it and we didn’t like it.” Vgc negatively compares aspects of Kill the Justice League to Square Enix’s widely criticized Avengers game. Eurogamer’s Ed Nightingale echoed a similar thought by stating “It’s clear Rocksteady is keen to try something new with Suicide Squad...

For the past 15 years or so, Noah Hawley has called Austin, Texas, home. Sure, he’s spent long stretches elsewhere — Calgary for FX’s Fargo, Bangkok for his forthcoming series Alien — but home, where his wife and two children (ages 16 and 11) reside, is 1,400 miles from Hollywood. And, as Hawley sees it, it’s served him well. “I always say I want to tell stories for everybody, and it helps not to be in a coastal bubble if you want to do that,” he says in early November. “And sure, Austin is its own bubble, but I do like the remove.”
The distance certainly hasn’t impacted his output, which is prolific, nor his success. ESPN has switched up its soundtrack for Monday Night Football with a new opening theme in which Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg, and Cindy Blackman Santana perform a “reimagining” of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” Check it out below.
If you really nit-pick this, the unlikely cover actually makes a decent amount of sense: Stapleton and Snoop have both performed at recent Super Bowls, with Stapleton performing the National Anthem this year and Snoop a part of the Halftime Show in 202. “In the Air Tonight” obviously needs a powerful drummer like Santana, who’s performed with legends including Pharoah Sanders, Lenny Kravitz, and — you guessed it! — Santana.
Why Collins’ 1981 smash hit was chosen as ESPN’s new hype anthem, however, is a bit of a head-scratcher. In a statement, the network said “In the Air Tonight” has a “deep relationship” with football, “having been cited in the past and present...

In the three decades since School Daze and the equally influential TV series A Different World were released, HBCUs, or historically Black colleges and universities, have seen a resurgence of much-needed attention. In 2019, Beyoncé’s Homecoming docufilm celebrated Black marching band and dance team culture, a pinnacle of any Hbcu football game. The 2021 inauguration of Vice President Kamala Harris put her undergraduate university Howard in the national spotlight; that same year, the Washington institution would rename its College of Fine Arts in honor of the late Chadwick Boseman, who graduated there in 2000, with Phylicia Rashad as dean.

Jimmy Buffett is focusing on his health. The 76-year-old musician shared on Thursday that he has been forced to reschedule his concert in Charleston, South Carolina, which was originally set to take place on Saturday, May 20 at the Credit One Stadium.
The “Margaritaville” singer shared a note with his fans on his website about the reason for the delay to the show, writing, “I had a sudden change of plans this week that affected us all. Two days ago, I was just back from a trip to the Bahamas, thawing out from the California ‘winter tour,’ and chomping at the bit to get to Charleston. I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention.”

In case you haven’t heard, the Writer’s Guild of America is currently on strike over a variety of issues that include better pay and better job security. The strike most obviously impacts TV series and movies that employ WGA members, though the strike itself has everyone in the entertainment industry talking.
Most recently, David Gaider decided to weigh in on the subject of the value of writers in the current entertainment economy. For those who don’t know, Gaider is a veteran video game writer who broke into the industry by writing for BioWare. His work on titles such as Baldur’s Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, and Knights of the Old Republic has been widely praised, though it’s Gaider’s extensive work on the Dragon Age series that often defines his legacy thus far. He is, generally speaking, often closely associated with the golden age of BioWare games.

Movie director and Oscar-winner James Cameron managed to break his own box-office records when he delivered Avatar to the big screen.
But before it hit theaters, Cameron used Brendan Fraser’s popular hit as a sort of guinea pig for Avatar.
Brendan Fraser originally thought the script for ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ was ‘daft’ Brendan Fraser | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Fraser once had a starring role in the sci-fi feature Journey to the Center of the Earth. The movie was based on a short story by French novelist Jules Verne. In the adaptation, Fraser played a professor who attempts to escape a cavern he finds himself trapped inside of. On his way out, Fraser’s professor encounters several creatures and obstacles that threaten his life.
Fraser admitted that when he first received the script, it was a concept he didn’t think much of.
“Verne was arguably science fiction’s creator.

The 2023 Major League Baseball season opens Thursday, boasting a new official advertising slogan: “Baseball is Something Else.”
In terms of media presence, that phrase definitely rings true. This season, a sport known for its decades of history on radio and TV will see direct-to-consumer streaming become an even bigger conduit to fans. Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Peacock are back with exclusive game packages and regional sports networks like Yes, Nesn and Bally Sports have all gone “over the top” with pricey new subscription offerings. ESPN+ will also stream games almost daily, though on a non-exclusive basis as online mirrors of regional telecasts. Fox Sports, another media partner of MLB, streams via its Fox Now app, which requires a pay-tv subscription.

Original “X-Files” series creator Chris Carter said during the “On the Coast” podcast that the rumored upcoming project will be a “remount” for the legacy series.
“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount ‘The X-Files’ with a diverse cast,” Carter shared. “So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”
IndieWire has reached out to representatives for Coogler and 20th Century Television for comment. Whatever form the Cooger-led series takes will likely play on Disney-owned Hulu,...

I have friends who’ve played the table-top, role-playing fantasy game Dungeons and Dragons (D&d), but I haven’t played ever. My friends tell me I’m missing out, but none of them will explain and teach me how to play, and all I know is that players can create their own characters and adventures. Whether Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves keeps true to the spirit of the game, I can’t say. However, as a film, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s execution pays off in a major way. Written by Daley, Goldstein and Michael Gilio, the movie that just opened SXSW has an all-star cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Daisy Head.

Game music isn’t just for gaming nerds anymore. It’s finally being recognized as real, “serious” music. This year, the Grammys introduced a new category for video game music: Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. The music has evolved along with the video game artform, as scores increasingly lay the emotional groundwork for an immersive experience.
What’s notable about numerous modern game soundtracks is their cinematic scope, involving lush orchestrations, heavy percussions, kinetic solos, propulsive vocals, and eurythmic atmosphere. Just like people become emotionally...

Rihanna is expecting her second child with rapper Aap Rocky, it was confirmed not long after the pop singer delivered a high-flying performance at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.
In front of a State Farm Stadium crowd of 72,000 (plus tens of millions watching at home), Rihanna served up a 13-minute medley of songs midway through Sunday night’s Chiefs-Eagles championship match-up — oftentimes while standing on a small platform that was suspended high above the playing field.
