Solid episode, but the show needs some major trimming
itisiabanana19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I loved seeing Chimney back at the 118, it was so good to see him working with Hen again.

The little moments between Chimney and Maddie showing us what we already knew, they're working their way back to each other, were nice to see. It'll be a satisfying end to their struggles when reunite (hopefully by the end of the season).

I'm thrilled with how well they're handling Eddie's story so far. I wish they'd flesh out some of these conversations a little more and not constantly cut away from them. They wasted so much time on side characters that should have been devoted to Maddie and Chim, Bobby and Athena or Eddie (and Christopher and Buck).

They really showcased how toxic Taylor and Buck are in a blink and you'll miss it scene (which was nice because I wish I could miss all of their scenes...) with a cheek peck and a nice (depressing) bit of quid pro quo. *Yikes*.

I'm glad that Jonah has left the station! That said, one down, one to go. Have to be honest, Lucy Donato is a stain on 5b. I can't get over how poorly she's being written and what an absolutely unfathomable amount of screen time they're wasting on her. Her scenes are boring and in this episode, mind-numbingly repetitive. And I'm sorry, but the actress playing her is just...not impressing me.

Once again Eddie is the best thing about the episode
allthingsao19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Dumb Luck in theory is a great episode. We had a lot of different rescues, a lot of our firefam, the continuation of Maddie's recovery/Madney becoming close again/everything that hospital scene gave us. We had the caring Buck we all know and love, we had Karen, we had so many good things.

In particular, we got to see Eddie's therapy, how he's feeling, his nightmares, Bobby and Buck taking care of him, actual conversations with Christopher, and then the sweet horse therapy scene at the end. Given that it's felt like Eddie has been sidelined for so long (and not for one minute do I think it's been to make him 'shine' in these episodes, it's been deliberate), it was an absolute joy to have him on screen and seeing so much going on for him.

The fact that they forced Taylor in for no good reason at all aside from to continue this dumb 'love triangle' rubbish only served to show that the only time Buck and Taylor have 'chemistry' together is when they are using one another. Maybe that was intentional too?

And as for Lucy. You might as well have renamed this episode The Lucy Episode. She is absolutely awful, what a self-absorbed character. That they had pretty much every single character praising her will not endear her to any of us. And wasting an entire scene on her and Jonah was infuriating. We get it, show, Lucy's your new fave, but she is not ours.

Overall, aside from the far too heavy emphasis on Lucy, Dumb Luck was a decent episode. Just a little flavour of the good stuff the show is capable of and used to be about.

good balance
sphieg1819 April 2022
I really enjoyed this episode! It was a good balance of emergencies and personal stuff, but in my opinion we could use a little less of the new characters and more of the characters we already know and love that don't get nearly enough screen time.

All of the above served and we want more of it thank u so much <3

(This was not even close to being a perfect episode but it was heavy on the content and characters that make the show great, so I'm giving it 10 stars to let them know that this formula works and it's what we wanna see bc let's be honest they're not reading our rants. They'll look at the number of stars and call it a day. Taylor dust era when? Lucy u will never be famous and Jonah i forgot u existed. Stop giving Ravi's screen time to white people like let him speak just once i promise u won't die)

Such a Great Episode!
kmt03010-476-25686419 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely loved this episode. All of the Eddie, Christopher, and Buck scenes were incredible! I love that they are putting such a huge focus on mental health. I think that's really important. I loved seeing Chim back on the team and Chim and Hen working together again! I loved seeing Chim and Maddie be there for each other (honestly forgot that they had broken up in the last episode until they stopped holding hands). I loved seeing Karen again! She should really be in the show more. I loved seeing Bobby and Athena together and hanging out with Hen and Karen.

The only part I didn't like about this episode was Lucy and Jonah. Why did they waste so much screen time on those two? Especially the scene of just them where they seemed to be talking negatively about the 118? Was that meant to get us to like them? If so, it really didn't work. Also I do not understand Lucy's storyline at all in this episode. She's seriously upset that she saved a woman's life but it was just luck so that doesn't make her special? There seems to be a huge ego there. If Buck had saved that kid on the roller coaster out of pure luck he would have been so relieved and happy. Same with any of the others on the 118. I do not think Lucy fits with this team at all. Not to mention, this could have been a great storyline for Ravi. He could have easily fit in there and had Buck mentoring him since he's the probie. They could have turned it into a learning experience for Ravi instead of a conceited storyline for Lucy. I don't see why Lucy is necessary to the plot at all. She's been in 3 episodes now and the more I see if her, the more I don't like her. Same with Jonah. I honestly hope we don't see much more of him either now that he's with another firehouse. I really wish they would focus more on Ravi and Albert. Everyone loves them, they've already been around for at least a few seasons and I've seen so many people say they'd like to see more of them and I completely agree.

However, those parts of the episode are not going to make me take any stars off because minus their scenes, the episode was incredible. JLH and Kenny coming back makes the show feel better again. More Buck and Eddie scenes makes the show feel better again. If they continue to give the mains more screentime (and give Ravi and Albert more screentime) then it will finally feel like 9-1-1 again.

Just, the way they are all getting back together. Jonah's gone, Chim's back, Eddie is getting better. Madney HELD HANDS. BuckleyDiaz family outing with horses and Eddie realizing through Buck he was worth. They deserve the world and are finally getting better.

Eddie diaz ily
YouGotTimeForASinner19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm giving a 10/10 because we FINALLY got the buckley-diaz scenes the show was missing in 5a. THIS IS THE HEART OF THE SHOW. Emergencies and the family units. We saw Karen and Hen having dinner at Bobby and Athena's, we saw Chimney and Maddie being there for each other in a highly stressful situation, we saw Buck being a rock for the Diaz boys, holding down the fort for eddie during his recovery (he is never a guest in that house, thats his home too). That's all I wanted and it feels so good to finally see it. And I hope it continues.

The ranch scene was beautiful, and the little nods to buck parenting christopher are so valued. I LOVED eddie normalising therapy to his son, and talking about it to his partner. One of the best things about his arc is how he opens up to willingly to Chris and Buck and how they support him. We even got to see Bobby be there for Eddie in a small way, and for Athena (it was nice to see her have a real human moment). Those small moments have always been what has made the show so special.

I still am not at all sold on Lucy, that random storyline for her felt jilted amongst the rest, I was like Jonah and the rest questioning what she was even getting at? Also she is an experienced firefighter, I presume older than Buck, so not sure why he was dishing out the wisdom there and not sure what Lucy is even trying to prove - Ravi would've fit this plot line better imo (PLEASE more Ravi and Albert!!). Why was she chasing glory at the beginning and now hung up over a lucky save? It was just hard to get where she was coming from.

The small Taylor inclusion was interesting, I assume we are being set up to see the lucy / taylor moment. Not that I care much for it, other than finally ending this relationship between Buck and Taylor that has been dragging it's feet. I'm still thrown by her forgiving him so easily, knowing her position is that the "truth is everything" and he's still not being honest. Oh well! The end seems near at least.

Your getting warmer!
brittybear-0335119 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode feels like we are getting there - the 118 is almost all back (just waiting on you, Eddie) and it almost feels normal again!

JLH and Kenny are knocking their arc out of the park for sure!

Ryan Guzman - my god - he is just amazing! 10 out of 10 and I love the Eddie, Buck, and Chris scenes! I know TPTB say it's all in the fans head, but this relationship is the cornerstone of the show. Period. They need to continue down this road - Oliver and Ryan together steal the show! That's all there is to it.

And the reason this episode doesn't get 10 stars - characters no one cares about when we barely see enough of those we love! Why are we wasting time on Jonah and Lucy - no one cares! How about a May arc? How about a Karen arc? How about an Albert arc? We don't want to waste our time on awful characters we don't like!

Couldn't care less about Jonah or Donato. Except that 10/10, the madney scenes, KAREN (FINALLY), the buckley-diaz scenes, the bathena scenes..... that's my show.

Better rating than the rest of the episodes because this time around it felt like the good (Eddie Díaz) outshined the bad.
stillnotyourbusiness19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Eddie Díaz and Christopher Díaz continue to be the best thing that has ever happened to this show, their plot this season is great and Ryan and Gavin are doing an outstanding job portraying their characters.

I also love how Buck can perfectly be in a healthy relationship for once, ironically it's not with Taylor. He has some issues that he needs to take care of that come from his trauma of being a neglected kid, and it's nice to see that when it involves the Díaz family, he can look pass all that trauma.

I couldn't care less about Lucy or Jonah. They are unnecessary and annoying. It doesn't make sense that an older woman (the guy that was in charge of the light in that scene with Buck hates her) with experience on the field (or so they implied in episode 5x11 and 5x13) is having a hard time about an emergency where they nothing happened.

I still don't understand what she brings to the show, she's not the daredevil they said she'd be, she doesn't have any chemistry with the cast and everything she has done could have been done by Ravi (or Albert if Anirudh couldn't be there as much).

Glad to see Karen back, I missed her so much and she's such a great character that should have been given way more screentime.

That scene with Taylor was not needed at all, nobody but Kristen Reidel and Arielle Kebbel like this love triangle, please stop shoving it down our throats. We'd rather watch any of the main characters doing laundry.

Slowly, but surely

Am I naive for hoping that this show might get back its mojo after a season and a half of mediocrity? Maybe, but if the remaining episodes keep up the momentum then it's looking pretty promising.

Still can't see this beyond soap opera caliber
JMadems19 April 2022
Too much time and energy spent on unnecessary useless newbies. Ravi could have told that story much better than the Fire Matron. ( Your lightning people aren't doing her any favors- her extra age is apparent- but they make Buck look younger!) With Ravi's backstory saving that life would have made a much more cohesive story. At least there was more Athena & Bobby and loved Henren! More please. Let Taylor meet Donaroo and figure bad Buck out and both of them can be gone and let Buck figure out that flying solo for a bit will restore his character and self esteem. Besides the Diaz boys need his full attention for now. Get back to the old gang for a while at least. All those unnecessary extras need to go away - along with this seasons showrunner. Let's get back the dynamics of seasons 2 & 3! Start S6 without all those needless glorified extras.

Great episode
cibelekzm23 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I legit don't get how people will look at this episode and give a low rate only because of a mediocre character existing on it. Feels like they're giving too much credit to said characters existence if they ruin the entirety of a good episode, with decent balance and good interactions between the main cast.

This episode has everything that is the heart of the show, bathena, madney, buddie interactions, firefam back together. I'm particularly very touched by the conversation between Eddie and Bobby. Both are character that share a similar tragedy and due that, hey can understand each other very well. Bobby was one of the few people Eddie allowed himself to be vulnerable, and we've seen it multiple times, after Shanon died. Bobby knows in first hand the type of problems Eddie is going through and I'm glad the show is exploring this, specially because it's a father-son type dynamic and still manages to be clearly different from the one Bobby has with Buck.

Personally I did understand from where Lucy was coming, being unhappy with praises over something she clearly did not have any control and just happened, but the way it was done just felt unnecessary and a bit of a reach. I think the advice scene would have worked way better with Ravi and Buck for example, since Ravi isn't an experienced firefighter. The scene didn't make much sense with her struggle. Unfortunately the writers are trying to warm up people on character with poor attempts, instead of actually give her something worth of work that explores her personality without feeling forced. There is moments they deliver it, but most of the times they just don't.

Jonah was giving me weird vibes, and keeps on doing it. I feel like this insecurity he has towards being replaced will definitely bite on Hen (probably) back.

As much as this is a good episode, I feel like the emergencies build up are taking a lot of screen time, they weren't this long in past seasons, idk what happened on this one, but I hope the writes fix that.

shoutout to the found family!!!
pipkinhill19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
911 is at its best when it highlights the family the 118 chose for themselves. Buck, eddie, and chris are such a solid family unit with buck stepping in to help out and just being there, bobby too coming over to check on eddie. Maddie and chim please i'm begging y'all to work things out they so clearly love each other. Henren and bathena card games i love how intertwined the 118 is with each other they're all connected.

I'm not going to rate the episode low for it but did not care for the lucy-jonah conversation or really any of lucy's storyline. I do feel like they're setting jonah (and maybe lucy) up to be a villain which could be interesting. I know arielle is doing a lot of press for the show but i feel her part has been smaller than i thought it would be based on how much press she's doing because she's actually getting very little screentime, almost makes me think we're not supposed to like her and that she'll end up being the bad guy with jonah.

Whatever ends up happening 5b has been such a big turnaround from the first half of the season.

Enjoyed this episode a lot for the Buckley Diaz family. Get rid of Lucy though.
dolfan9019 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Buckley Diaz family is the heart of this show. Buck was literally acting like a husband and father to Eddie and Chris in this episode and doing everything to help heal Eddie.

The sub plot with Lucy was boring and unnecessary, she needs to go.

Eddie and Chris continue to be the best thing about this show.
seban-0155019 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So, this episode had a feel of how 911 used to be when it used to be good. There is just something completely absent from the rescues now and I can't explain it.

Positives from the episode: Karen Wilson, the Buckley-Han family in the hospital (so relieved Jee is okay!)

Major negatives from the episode: Taylor Kelly. Are you telling me there was no way to make the horse therapy happen without her? Seriously? And the huge LOL about her interviewing Lucy... These are adults, this is not a teen drama, you write like this is high school and it is ridiculous.

Lucy is the biggest negative, what a thoroughly unlikeable character. Why you tried to make her centre of attention in this episode is beyond me. She is AWFUL. What are you doing?

Best thing about this episode: everything with Eddie and Chris. Therapy, flashbacks, talking, domestic scenes. This was all beautifully done. Which just proves you do remember how to tell good stories. So why don't you anymore?

I really don't like the Lucy 118. Please make her go away for good.
Jocelyn7219 April 2022
With each passing episode the show gets worse. Not even the wonderful Eddie and Chris scenes could save the episode for me. I don't get why they force this terrible an unlikeable character of Lucy down our throats. We had Ravi in this episode as well, but at somepoint he just vanished. Sad. I don't know how others feel, but i am no longerin the mood to continue watching this nonsense.

The character of Lucy Donato is a complete disaster and i hate EVERY tiny second of the screentime she gets.
maggiemargaret12319 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Okay here i was for the first time being at least a little bit exciting for an episode, i thought we would get some more interesting Eddie scenes and it turned out to be an epic letdown. We got Lucy here, Lucy there, Lucy worrying, everyone talking about Lucy, when it should have been Eddie. Ok i get it Kristen Reidel loves her creation, but almost the entire fandom does not care for this character. Thank god for the little Eddie and Chris scene because i was ready to smash my television after watching Taylor trying to get an interview with Lucy. That is a HORROR SCENARIO I AM ZERO PERCENT INTERESTED IN WATCHING. Kristen you can keep this terrible storyline i won't be part of it. I have enough. I won't continue watching this show live from now on. I just catch up on the Eddie part. Thank you Kristen, thank you very much for ruining this show.

Dumb is right...
~AleXa~27 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just can't anymore... The 'emergencies' are some of the dumbest. First, someone is dumb enough to sit their girlfriend in a 2-inch railing on a high rise, and then a rookie catches her in mid-fall which is just shy of impossible. To make matters worse, add one of the dumbest 'road rage' incidents in history. There would never be speed humps on a HIGHWAY, and then the sign is going to happen to jump out and impale the cyclist at high velocity? They clearly don't understand physics. It would have been possible if the truck had run it over, kicking it up and toward her.

That being said, the show has been on a rapid descent into prime time, soap opera mediocrity. Realistic themes are appreciated, touching on PTSD, survivor's guilt, parental struggles, but sadly it's just not enough for a show whose premise relies on a balance between action and drama. What little action that exists is so ridiculous, it has the unintended effect of being distracting and insulting rather than enthralling. It feels like the writers have lost the plot...

Time will tell, but I'm not holding my breath.
