Hope, Pray and Love

Matthew Perry is a great writer! Isn't he?? I have read so much about his legendary wit in Friends, Studio 60, End of Steve et al and was pretty sure that Mr.Sunshine will be one sarcastic, witty roller coaster ride. Sadly, except Matthew and Allison to an extent, there is nothing much in this show to look forward too as the season progresses! There is too much dependence on slapstick situations and there are characters created specifically for that purpose (Nate - to quote the worst!) In this episode, Matthew was really good - with Roman, Andrea and James or Crystal, he was in his elements. But the scenes in his apartment, crystal's ice dancing drama - not good! Also Andrea, James and their relationship issues - bad for the show!.

Oddly this is episode two on the 'Mr Sunshine' DVD when in fact it was broadcast fifth.

This episode highlights all that was good about the show. Matthew Perry gets to show off all the sarcasm and likability that wins him so many fans, and Allison Janney continues to steal the show from the sidelines.

The nice dynamic between Perry's character and Nate Torrence's also is a highlight of this episode.

However this episode also shows what was wrong with the show. It plays out more like a collection of sketches set in an arena rather than a sitcom, and the plots are throw away. The Andrea Anders and James Lesure characters don't seem to work either.

'Mr Sunshine' was an inconsistent show, and this episode proves that.
