At the beginning of Robert Wise's 1951 sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still," a flaying saucer lands in Washington, D.C. and a stern, masked alien named Klaatu (Michael Rennie) emerges. He announces to the gathered military and curious humans that he comes in peace, and even has a gift for the people of Earth. He extracts a small, palm-sized tube and flicks it open, revealing multiple small antennae. The flicking device, however, spooks one of the nearby military men, and he fires off a shot, injuring Klaatu's hand. He falls in pain.
Almost instantly, as if sensing Klaatu's panic, an enormous eight-foot humanoid robot emerges from the flying saucer. It is silvery and featureless, sporting a mysterious visor across its face. This is Gort. Gort steps out onto the ground, and its visor lifts, revealing a glowing power source. A laser beam emerges from Gort's head, striking all the Army's weapons.

Before diving into My Hero Academia Season 7 we kicked things off with four recap episodes ( My Hero Academia: Memories ). This has allowed us to reminisce about everything that’s happened so far. Thinking about the early days of Izuku Midoriya doing everything he could to prove that “Deku is the name of the hero” got me thinking about all the anime openings from the series and how they’re the perfect way to show the shift from “kid with a dream” to “kid facing the harsh realities of that dream.” To me, anime openings tell a story, working as a preview of what to expect from the series you’re about to watch. Whether it’s through the visuals or the lyrics (whether we realize it or not when we first watch it), anime openings are a big component of the anime-watching experience. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Evil Does Not Exist won Best Film at the Asian Film Awards (AFAs) this evening in Hong Kong. Scroll down for the full list of winners.
This is the second year running that a film helmed by Hamaguchi has picked up the award. He won the top prize last year with Drive My Car. This year, however, the director was not in attendance to accept the award due to what he described as “work commitments” in a video message played at the top of the ceremony.
Evil Does Not Exist, which also picked up an award for original music, debuted at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. The film follows Takumi and his daughter Hana, who live in Mizubiki Village close to Tokyo. Like generations before them, they live a modest life according to the cycles and order of nature. The Day Today was making Fake News its business long before it was even a twinkle in Donald Trump’s eye. Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris’ TV translation of their On the Hour BBC Radio 4 series parodied the gravely serious, scare-mongering, hyperbolic news style of the early 1990s with absurd, nonsensical headlines: “Portillo’s teeth removed to boost Pound. Exploded cardinal preaches sermon from fish tank. And where now for man raised by puffins?”
With a comedy team including Steve Coogan (who road-tested Alan Partridge on TV for the first time here), Rebecca Front, David Schneider and Doon Mackichan, the show didn’t aim to hoodwink its audience or even the public figures in the news, the target was the news itself. And if speaking truth to power is the essence of good satire, then the target doesn’t come much more powerful than the media, and satires don...

From the most wishlisted game on Steam to oblivion, The Day Before is to shut down in January 2024, mere weeks after its launch.
The chronicles of The Day Before are so strange, we suspect there’ll be an entire book written about it in the next year or two. Developed by indie studio Fntastic, the much-anticipated zombie survival shooter was announced in 2021 and swiftly became the most wishlisted title on Steam.
After a deeply strange development cycle and a calamitous Early Access launch, however, it’s now been announced that The Day Before will vanish for good on 22nd January 2024. The game only launched on the 7th December. That’s six weeks from launch to shut down – surely some sort of record.

Among new openers, France led play with $5.1M at a clear No. 1 and beating all comps. In Australia, $4M was the 2nd biggest WB opening weekend of 2023 as well as the 2nd biggest family opening weekend of the year. Italy’s $3.4M start was also a clear No. 1 and tracking above comps.
The movie ranked No. 1 in 60 of its 77 markets, with a fantastic -30% hold in the 37 that opened last session (-27% excluding China).

Once the most wish-listed game on Steam, zombie Mmo The Day Before has seen its player count drop hugely, just four days on from its launch.
The subject of both anticipation and suspicion, zombie survival Mmo The Day Before finally launched in Early Access on the 7th December after nearly three years of slick-looking trailers and delays.
That the game actually got a release at all marked quite a moment for the game, given the common accusations that it was so much vapourware, and a bizarre legal dispute over its title that saw it delisted from Steam for several months.
The open-world survival opus’ launch has meant that players have now been able to give their verdict – and looking at the available data, it doesn’t look too pretty for developer Fntastic.
As first noted by PCGamesN, The Day Before’s concurrent player count has dropped precipitously since launch. The...

Directed by Nicholas Meyer, The Day After disturbed a generation of TV audiences in 1983. On the 40th anniversary of its first airing, we look back at its immediate and lasting impact.
“If you can, take a quick look out of the window,” said TV host Ted Koppel immediately after the first airing of The Day After on the 20th November, 1983. “It’s all still there. Your neighbourhood is still there. So is Kansas City. And Lawrence. And Chicago, San Diego, Moscow and Vladivostok…”
Koppel’s words of reassurance were a sign of how nervous the ABC Network was about airing its multi-million dollar, two-hour feature about the nuclear destruction of the United States. The company had reason to be on edge: aside from the expense, the film had alienated advertisers, angered the political right, and left ABC executives fearing that audiences would switch off their televisions – all before the film had even aired.

Once upon a time in Boston, there was a bar where everybody knew your name. That bar was the setting for the NBC series "Cheers," which ran for 11 seasons from 1982-1993. Behind this bar was bartender/owner Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former baseball player and alcoholic who had an on-again-off-again romance with the more cultured (at least she thought so) barmaid Diane Chambers (Shelley Long). Psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) started his TV life here, later going on to have his own show, with a revival currently running on Paramount+. George Wendt played the accountant Norm, whose name was yelled every time he walked through the door. Rhea Perlman was Carla, the acerbic cocktail waitress. The show had so many incredible characters, but my favorite was always Cliff Clavin.

“No one is really creating original sci-fi blockbusters anymore, it’s an endangered species.”
Such was the wise insight from Gareth Edwards at the special screening of his latest movie The Creator last week. This from a filmmaker who has run the gamut from the half-million-budgeted 2010 indie Monsters to the $265 million-budgeted, billion-dollar-plus grossing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which despite any headlines about reshoots with Tony Gilroy truly had Edwards’ fingerprints on it down to its The Day After end-of-the-world finale.
In a weekend crowded with two other wide releases — Paramount/Spin Master’s Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie and Lionsgate’s Saw X — and movies’ profiles significantly dimmed by the lack of actors’ promotions during the SAG-AFTRA strike, the $80 million New Regency-financed The Creator né True Love is hoping to break through. While box office projections are in the high teens, which is the same as Paw...

Kate Hudson is the standout in "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery"
The day had finally come. My most anticipated film of the whole festival. The one we’ve all been waiting for. A veteran star on the comeback trail. A critical darling steering the ship. There’s talk of awards but will the public and pundits be on board? I for one couldn't wait to find out, but The Return of Tanya Tucker featuring Brandi Carlisle was in the evening. I had other movies to see first.
And it started early. To my horror the screening of Glass Onion started at 9am. Nine Am!!! What was I thinking? It was worth the effort, though...
I wasn’t a big fan of the first Knives Out. Too convoluted by far. Too pleased with its own cleverness. Having been totally confused on first watch I saw it again...

The last 10 years or so has seen a huge influx in post-apocalyptic movies. After an initial glut in the 1980s (thanks to the Mad Max series and its countless cheap knock-offs), the genre faded back for a number of years, but has come back with a vengeance in the 2000s and beyond, maybe because it’s an easier way to shoot a movie on a low budget, maybe because of the popularity of The Walking Dead, or maybe because the political climate has grown more tumultuous and divisive over the last decade, making many of us wonder how we’re going to continue living together as a society. Apocalyptic movies play directly into those fears.
What Still Remains, the first feature film from writer/director Josh Mendoza, is interested in exactly these kinds of questions. It’s a relatively intimate apocalyptic movie set years after things have fallen apart and...

Dressed in Imperial Army uniforms and flying Rising Sun flags, the anti-Zainichi Korean group dubbed Zaitokukai invade the streets of Koreatown in Tokyo. With virulence in their eyes and bile in their mouths, they vehemently declare all Koreans to either go back to the peninsula or to die – one female middle-school student cries out for a Koreatown Massacre, an older male point fingers out a Korean women as chong-ko – against a sonic backdrop of a patriotic tune sung by a children’s choir. In ever-increasing numbers, however, these marches are silenced by the voices denouncing their obscene racist agendas, at times leading to violent clashes and arrests. Against this backdrop, Lee Il-ha’s hip and insightful documentary erupts and educates the world in the battle against hate-speech, as told by those fighting on both sides of the conflict in the cities of Japan. ‘Counters’ comes at an important time when...

For months now, Harvey Weinstein has been pretending that this whole #MeToo thing was going to blow over, that eventually he’d be back, somehow.
On Friday that fantasy came crashing in with the force of a thousand news cameras. It’s probably a day Harvey Weinstein thought would never come. But it did. He was marched into the New York criminal court like some low-level thug — like some mob operator, like some drug dealer, like some terrorism suspect — charged with three felonies, saddled with an ankle monitoring device and forced to hand over his passport.
And then marched out in handcuffs.
So after months at an Arizona spa where no one knew him, he is now confined to New York and Connecticut, where everyone, everywhere knows him. Where the media will stalk him like the click-bait he is, where restaurants won’t take his reservation, where people will hiss...

Shannyn Sossamon became something of an "It Girl" in the early noughties with roles in films including "A Knight's Tale," "40 Days and 40 Nights," the Bret Easton Ellis adaptation "Rules of Attraction" and "The Order" (her second and final film with the late Heath Ledger, whom she called "a very special spirit" but was otherwise reticent to talk about in a short-form interview), but after giving birth to her son Audio in 2003 she all but disappeared from the spotlight. Since then, Sossamon has popped up in everything from well-received indies ("Wristcutters: A Love Story") to big, star-studded Hollywood com-coms ("The Holiday") to TV series (the cult single-season CBS vampire drama "Moonlight"), though recently her resume is heavy on so-called "genre" work, from the 2008 J-horror remake "One Missed Call" to the 2011 post-apocalyptic thriller "The Day" to this year's buzzy summer series "Wayward Pines" and now "Sinister 2," the sequel to the sleeper...

When he walked into the room, he nearly blotted out the sun that was peering through the hotel window while shining brightly on the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. There I was, ready to go one-on-one with the demon Kane, and I managed to come out without a scratch.
Before I begin, at this time I'd like to thank Kane for not chokeslamming me when I tried putting him in a sleeper. Of course I kid, but he was eyeballing some chairs and tables ominously during our interview about the resurrection of Jacob Goodnight for the Lionsgate / WWE Studios film See No Evil 2.
"I was sort of shocked to get the call really because the first movie had been a commercial success with WWE Studios’ debut film, and I thought, 'Okay, we’re going to do a sequel pretty quickly,' and it didn’t happen for, like, several years," Glenn Jacobs,...

WWE Studios is resurrecting the demon Kane as Jacob Goodnight in See No Evil 2, the upcoming sequel to See No Evil, but before speaking with the mammoth monster himself, we had the opportunity to sit with stars Danielle Harris and Kaj-Erik Erikson as well as directors Jen and Sylvia Soska.
"In the movie I play Amy," Harris (pictured) tells us of her character. "Amy works at the morgue and loves her job, dropped out of Med School to pursue it because she feels like at the end of the day we all end up here anyway."
"She’s got some family issues, issues with her brother, issues with her mother … not too far from real life. *laughs* I just so happen to be working, on my character's birthday, the night that … we pick up where the last one left off and there’s all these bodies … I’m always...

Cory Hardrict is the next to join the cast of Spectral. You may remember him from Battle Los Angeles playing a soldier taking on an alien threat, or maybe from The Day. This time, he's taking on "supernatural beings" (previous reports have told us it's an army of ghosts) that invade New York City. According to THR, he has been cast as part of a special forces unit.
