Am I shocked that Sacha Baron Cohen has once again pushed the boundaries of tasteful perversion to new, demonstrably scarring realms? Of course not. But, when you watch a film like Borat or Brüno, offensive content can be assumed. The Brothers Grimsby, on the other hand, is – or was supposed to be – a more narrative espionage thriller laced with Cohen’s innocence-eviscerating sense of humor. And it is, mostly. Cohen’s focus glistens with a 90s buddy-spy vibe, yet as adventure gives way to juvenility, we start to wonder whether dick jokes are merely supplemental, or if these inappropriate gags just needed a home, and Grimsby seemed like a fit enough place.
Cohen stars as Carl “Nobby” Butcher, a drunken soccer hooligan who finally reunites with his brother, Sebastian (Mark Strong), after being separated at a Grimsby orphanage. Nobby, the older of the two, stayed behind so Sebastian could be adopted by a loving family.

Sacha Baron Cohen struggles with a northern accent and everything else in this unimaginative comedy
“How many spunk jokes can you get into one movie?” asked one mildly exasperated punter as we shuffled out of a Southampton Cineworld screening of Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest ramshackle amalgam of cock, ball and bukkake gags on Tuesday night. The answer is: very many indeed, along with endless splashings of monster turds, giant penises, ruptured anuses, dangling scrotums and (in a supremely unfunny but endlessly repeated riff) HIV-infected blood.
Co-writer and star Baron Cohen plays Grimsby native Norman “Nobby” Butcher, a lager-swilling football fan long separated from his brother Sebastian (Mark Strong), who is now a sleek secret service agent. Reunited in the wake of accidental bloodshed, the Butcher boys hole up briefly in their caricatured northern home town before jetting off to South Africa for a showdown with a hotel chambermaid (Gabourey Sidibe), an assortment of hitmen,...

Texas-shot gore western Kill Or Be Killed is a bloody blast. If S. Kill or be Killed, the new Western from Justin Meeks and Duane Graves, both of Butcher Boys and Wild Man of the Navidad fame, comes out on DVD and VOD on March 1st. We have been given a clip to share with you, which involves a bloody shootout. And where there are a lot of guns there will eventually be a smattering of dead people too. Good times. Claude "Sweet Tooth" Barbee and his gang of cutthroat outlaws - the most wanted men in Texas - are on a desperate ride across five hundred miles of badlands to recover a fortune in hidden loot from their most daring robbery. But Barbee and his crew aren't the only coldblooded killers riding the range. With a large "dead...

We’re just over a month away from Halloween and there are no less than four major UK horror festivals on the horizon, so what better time to take a look at you choice of “home video” horror – with ten of the best independent horror movies to rent or buy on TheHorrorShow.TV
The Top 10, in no particular order, are…
Camp Dread
Mixing the slasher movie with reality TV doesn’t seem like the best idea for horror movie, especially considering the mainstream backlash against both genres, but surprisingly Camp Dread manages to overcome it’s much-maligned origins. Of course any slasher movie set at a summer camp is going to be filled with the tropes of the genre and this film is no different – although this time around the stereotypes and cliches which would typically hinder such a production actually work in its favour. By embracing what made the...

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ actress Marilyn Burns dead at 64 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre actress Marilyn Burns, the one cast member who manages to survive Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s low-budget 1974 horror cult classic, was found dead on Tuesday, August 4, 2014, at her home in the Houston area. According to her manager, "she was found unresponsive by a family member." The cause of death remains unclear. Burns (born on July 5, 1950, in Erie, Pennsylvania) was 64. The Houston-raised Marilyn Burns began appearing in films in the early ’70s. She had a bit part in Robert Altman’s Houston-filmed Brewster McCloud (1970), starring Bud Cort, Sally Kellerman, and Shelley Duvall, and was later cast in a supporting role in Sidney Lumet’s Austin-shot 1974 drama Lovin’ Molly; however, Burns was ultimately replaced by Susan Sarandon, reportedly remaining in the production as a stand-in for both Sarandon and Blythe Danner. Also in 1974, Marilyn Burns landed the...

Kim Henkel, writer of the classic horror The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and writer/director of its third sequel, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (although the less said about that the better), returns to the horror genre with Butcher Boys, his first feature in almost twenty years.
In 1729 Jonathan Swift published A Modest Proposal, a satirical tome in which he suggested Ireland offer up their children as food, using cannibalism as a metaphor for the exploitation of the poor by the rich. Well jump to 2014 and Butcher Boys takes this metaphorical concept and turns it into filmic terror as a birthday celebration at an upscale restaurant sets in motion events that bring a group of friends face to face with the macabre...

Butcher Boys escaped me early on, and I for sure did not know that it was from the mind of Kim Henkel, the writer of the original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. I cannot begin to explain what high regard I have for that movie. Gritty 1970’s exploitation is my bag anyway, and that movie was a master stroke in the genre. It has only happened to a similar, but far lesser degree with “The Blair Witch Project” over twenty years later. Is it real? Did it actually happen? Am I going to be able to sit through this, or it is just going to be too much to take? TCM was like finding a filet mignon in a Spam can. I thought the meat metaphor would be appropriate. Brilliantly written, directed, and expertly shot by Daniel Pearl, with actors and locations whose deficiencies somehow became advantages.

Here's the latest Austin film news.
Austin filmmaker Emily Hagins's fourth feature film, Grow Up, Tony Phillips won't be released on VOD and DVD until October 2014, according an update on the movie's Kickstarter campaign page. The independently produced comedy, starring Aj Bowen (A Horrible Way to Die) and Tony Vespe (Hagins's My Sucky Teen Romance) as the eponymous character, tells the story of a Halloween-loving teenager who refuses to grow up. It was shot in and around Central Texas and premiered at SXSW this year (Elizabeth's review, my interview). Former Afs staffer Bryan Poyser's (Elizabeth's interview) latest feature film The Bounceback (Don's review) -- which also premiered at SXSW -- won a best writing award at the 18th Annual Genart Film Festival last week, which celebrates emerging filmmakers in North America, IndieWire reports. "Butcher Boys" has a tough road ahead of it. Thanks to its writer and producer, the movie will inevitably be compared to "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" as soon as the opening credits start to roll. It's unfair and a shame, because the movie once entitled "Boneboys" actually isn't a bad little independent horror piece.
Four friends are out on the town for a birthday celebration. After provoking a couple troublemakers, the group get into a high-speed chase through a bad part of the city. They drive up on a gang hanging out in the street, causing a wreck that kills the dog of one of the thugs. Little do they know that their actions have brought them into the world of a cannibalistic band of psychopaths bent on making them their next meal.
Kim Henkel is probably best known as the producer and writer of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Despite a few of the talents affixed to Butcher Boys (where the hell was Marilyn Burns) it erupts from a cinematic cave that could have kept it tucked away and spared viewers a few bucks as well as an hour and a half of their lives. Ali Faulkner saves the movie from running out of steam immediately and I heavily applaud her dedication to this role. Ultimately however Butcher Boys is something of a wreck.

Directors Duane Graves and Justin Meeks are the subject of our latest Q&A feature, telling us about their experience with the recently released cannibal film, Butcher Boys:
Can you tell me how you got involved with Kim Henkel on this project? Was this something you came to him with or the other way around?
Duane Graves: We’ve had a long 16 year relationship with Kim Henkel. He was our college film professor back in the late 90′s. We took a year of screenwriting courses under him, and after graduating we kept in touch. Justin and I produced a trio of short horror films that Kim produced, and eventually we decided to do a feature film back in 2006 called “The Wild Man of the Navidad.” That film premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC and was picked up by IFC Films for release internationally. Butcher Boys is the new film written and produced by Kim Henkel, best known as the scribe behind the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It revolves around a group known as the Bone Boys, a vicious gang that runs the streets and deals in human flesh as if it were drugs. A young woman and her friends are selected at random to be on the menu, and insanity ensues.
We spoke with Henkel about how Butcher Boys is an evolution of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the taboo of cannibalism, and his upcoming documentary.
Where did the idea for Butcher Boys come from?
Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” was a major inspiration. [“A Modest Proposal” was a satirical essay written in 1729 which suggested that poor parents sell their babies as food for the wealthy.] What I posited was that, some time after writing “A Modest Proposal,” a group of individuals decided to put it into effect for whatever reason, and the Bone Boys are an extension of those individuals.

Oh boy, a movie from the creator of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre himself, Tobe Hooper! Wait, it’s not Tobe Hooper? It’s Kim Henkel?
Butcher Boys was adapted by the guy who collaborated with Tobe Hooper on the story for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and also produced), and you’re going to market this as “From The Creator Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”? Well, if that isn’t some deceptive tomfoolery…
Butcher Boys is one of those cannibalistic-type cult movies much like Delicatessen or Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, where the psychopaths view people as a source of income and food, except the work by Duane Graves and Justin Meeks is nowhere as entraining as the movies mentioned above, or most of the genre, for that matter. What came first…the chicken or the egg? The eternal question is not really a question at all. It depends on your own point of view. What you have as your foundation dictates the answer. With that in mind, what dictates that a scene or action is a trademark as opposed to being an homage (or a rip off for that matter)? It depends on our point of view. This thought process comes heavily into play for the viewer when watching Butcher Boys aka Bone Boys, Kim Henkel’s most accomplished work to date, brought to life by directors Justin Meeks and Duane Graves.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films Directors: Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. Writer: Kim Henkel. Cast: Ali Faulkner, Edwin Neal, Marilyn Burns, Derek Lee Nixon, Karrie Cox and Sonny Carl Davis. Butcher Boys is a cannibal film set in Texas, from writer Kim Henkel. Horror fans will recognize Henkel's name from the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Henkel is still churning out cannibal films, but the Butcher Boys is tainted meat. Shot on a sparse budget, the Butcher Boys is full of cat and mouse chase sequences and not much more. Instead, the film seems to spin its wheels in the second and third acts. The story begins with four twentysomethings. You will hardly figure out their names before these two couples are being chased by a group of thugs, straight out of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Several minutes are spent with chase sequences,...

The Boneboys is a looming cannibalistic feature that continues to confuse one film fan. The first trailer for the feature, hosted here, shows a group of friends on the run from something or someone that is left unexplained. Unfortunately, these friends run into a family of cannibals who seem to be on the hungry side. How does a family of cannibals manage to live in a major urban centre? With that question aside, horror fans might remember writer Kim Henkel from his work on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). This is one of Duane Graves' first feature films as director and Justin Meeks (The Wild Man of Navidad) has a background in both an acting and directing. Have a look at the first trailer for their latest horror venture below and try to put the puzzle pieces together. Directors: Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. Writer/producer: Kim Henkel. Tagline: "You are what you eat." Horror feature Boneboys offers one of the more ridiculous taglines this year: "You are what you eat." The characters in the film eat or sell human flesh. So, if they are humans or cannibals, the tagline suggests that they are still humans. Maybe the producers need to go back to the drawing board with that one. In the film's defence, this title has been influenced by Jonathan Swift's satire "A Modest Proposal." This is a piece that suggests Irish babies should be sold to the richer elite for consumption (from the 18th Century). Thus, the killer's might simply be babies. Whatever the case, the tagline is strange indeed. Boneboys is also significant for reuniting many actors from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre according to the Uhm. Those appearing from the TCM franchise include Marilyn Burns (Sally from original), Bill Johnson (Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw...

Here's the latest in Austin film news.
Austin Film Society recently received a $75,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The nonprofit organization is one of 80 "Our Town" grantees in the nation. The grant will fund community engagement and design for Austin Studios' expansion as the organization incorporates and remodels the neighboring decommissioned National Guard Building into its current site.
Afs will involve the community in the new Austin Studios design, which includes creating affordable space for production and education; programming and design of a new exhibition and visitors center with a plaza/lobby for events; screening rooms for Afs's exhibition programs, artists, festivals and community organizations; and plans for signage, landscaping and other infrastructure that will allow the public to observe and interact with working filmmakers and other artists. The expansion will fulfill four major needs identified by the 2008 CreateAustin Cultural Master Plan commissioned by the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division.

Time Out London's "100 best horror films" blowout is more than a list; it's a microsite unto itself: "We polled well over 100 horror enthusiasts — with big names like Roger Corman, Guillermo del Toro, Simon Pegg, Clive Barker and Alice Cooper, and horror legends like Coffin Joe, Kim Newman and Tom Six — and came up with a definitive top 100 list." Click on those names to see the individual ballots. "The result may surprise you: while the top ten may be stuffed with big hitters, the full list is wonderfully unpredictable and packed with oddball leftfield choices."
A couple of notes on the top five:
The Exorcist (1973). Tom Huddleston calls up William Friedkin: "To be frank with you, [writer] Bill Blatty and I never set out to make a horror film. The idea never crossed our minds." Tol's notes; and take a look at the storyboards at OutNow (scroll down).
