Small Hours - Adam Batchelor's directorial debut
alisonlamont10 May 2011
From the opening panorama, almost epic in scale, this feel-good short film draws the viewer in. It has no great dramatic content, though there is more than enough drama as far as the main protagonist is concerned, rather it is a subtle observation of the realities of everyday life, centred around the sensitivities of one young man in particular & a chance encounter which may change his life. Director Adam Batchelor, who also conceived of & wrote the script, has drawn solid performances from his cast & crew. The cinematography is spot on, the editing has been paced perfectly, & the attention to details such as the atmospheric early morning noises, all combine to make this little gem of a film shine. Shot on a tiny budget of only £800 & with limited equipment, this short film is all the more remarkable for its professionalism & quality. A great example of British socio-realist film-making which won the British Universities Film & Video Council's 'Best Undergraduate Production 2011'. Revised 03/10/11: Winner of Best Student Short Film at the Crystal Palace International Film Festival 2011
