A great show ends with a decent episode.
Sleepin_Dragon11 November 2021
I know that a lot of people tuned in to watch this final episode, over 5 million viewers watched the show bow out after almost 300 episodes, fair to say the show was a shadow of its former self, but this final series was much improved over recent offerings.

All events this series have been building to this final episode, Clarke pretty much breaking down one big story into six episodes, the main question was always going to be, would Howard be allowed back home, ir was he finally going to run off with Marina?

I think for anyone that hadn't been watching it, that simply tuned in to watch the send off, it would have been a disappointment, for the avid fan, I think it would have been quite satisfying.

There are a few laughs, but more than that it's all put nostalgia, just knowing that's the end, and seeing the whole cast together is sweet. Even Auntie is dressed up.

Did it end at the right time? Tough to ask, new characters had come and gone, but none of them captured the hearts as the originals did, would it perhaps have been better if Clarke had allowed other writers to pen scripts? I personally think it had long since been on borrowed time.

6/10.

Strong end to series but not the show

Warning: Spoilers
So here it is the last episode of Last of The Summer Wine. 'How Not to Cry at Weddings' was never intended to be the last episode of the show so it does fall short of a deserved grand finale, but that said, it is a decent end to series 31.

Series 31 has been generally great. Russ Abbott has really settled into the role and the show has finally had some much needed focus. It was also the first series where we've had a continuing story arc (involving Howard and Pearl) which has been nice.

Fortunately Pearl allows Howard to move back in after a great sentimental scene between them where they reflect on their marriage. Roy Clarke was great at these scenes. Shame we never had more over them, especially with all of the cast members they lost over the years.

This episode focusing on the main characters getting together for a wedding. This is the first time in a long while that the majority of the cast have been together and it works rather well. We don't know the bride but that doesn't matter.

There's some great laughs including Tom forcing Auntie Wrainwright to make an effort with her outfit and Pearl covering Marina's face during a group photograph.

David Ross (Elgin from the Green Green Grass) plays a bumbling bus driver which is a nice turn.

It's a shame that Ivy and Nelly don't feature in this episode. I'm sure they would have done if the team had known the BBC would give the show the axe. It had to end sometime, but it's such a shame it didn't get a special final episode.

Thankfully, Clegg, the only character to appear in every episode, got the last line which is rather fitting.

Goodbye

Here it is the very last of the summer wine after 31 series and 295 episodes the series has finally ended. This episode was a average episode nothing special but very amusing in places.

Everybody is getting ready for the wedding prompting Howard and Pearl to look back at their relationship and finally get back together.Alvin begins flirting with Stella and Toby is determined to win back his wife Monica and clegg has forgotten to lock his door. They all meet up at a local pub where Glenda gets a phone call to say the groom has do a runner so they all decide to head off to a nice lunch.

The final episode was very good but the show did not get the send off it deserved. It was for clegg to have the very last line and was fitting since he is the only person to appear in all 295 episodes.I would like to say a huge thank-you to all involved in the making of this wonderful show.

It really is the Last of the Summer Wine
Prismark101 November 2019
I thought Last of the Summer Wine would get to its 40th anniversary so it was a surprise that the BBC ended it in 2010.

Then again the cast were not getting any younger. Peter Sallis was losing his eyesight and had already given up his role as the voice of Wallace in the Aardman Animations cartoons. Trevor Bannister who played Toby died in 2011. Frank Thornton would go in 2013.

More importantly Roy Clarke just ran out of ideas. Sad to say that the final episode was a damp squib.

Pearl takes Howard back in the house. Howard tells her that he always knew he would be looked after by Pearl. This is what Wally Batty said about Nora some years earlier.

Even the coach driver who turns up at the end and who could not see well was just a modernised Eli.

It is the day of the wedding of a character we have never met and never get to see. This wedding has been a running theme in the final series.

The regulars get dressed up for the wedding including Auntie Wainwright, although at first she dressed up like she was going to a funeral. Glenda tries to match up Morton with one of her friends.

Unfortunately it is all rather underwhelming, although Toby and Marina do their best in getting some laughs.

Clegg and Truly have bigger roles here. Prohibitive insurance costs meant that at their age all the scenes featuring Peter Sallis and Frank Thornton had to be filmed indoors or in the studio.

Clegg complains that his memory is going and the last line is left to Clegg. Something about wondering if he had locked the door of his house.

I thought it would be a more profound last line. Roy Clarke could be so whimsical at times but not here sadly.

Very disappointed

Personal I think they made a mistake with this episode, really think it should have finished with Cleggy remembering all his friends (Compo, Blairmere, Foggy and Seymour) and a final goodbye to all the actors who had passed away.......really was very very disappointed with it.
