Staying faithful: Has there been another entertainment show with an impact nearing that of The Traitors in recent years? As Stewart and Max revealed yesterday, the BBC and Studio Lambert — which makes the UK and U.S. versions — are close to a deal make a version with famous faces. After closing out January with the very gay (and very terrible) The Covenant (listen) and the pseudo-remake of Single White Female: The Roommate (listen), we kicked off February with journey to the world of H.P. Lovecraft in Re-Animator. Now, we’re traveling back in time to discuss Albert Lewin‘s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders), tells his friend Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield) that men should pursue their sensual longings, but laments that only the young get to do so. Taken with the idea, Dorian inadvertently makes a Faustian bargain to stay young forever. His wish comes true, and his boyish looks aid him as he indulges his every whim. Unfortunately, his sins take physical form on a portrait of himself, and as the years go by he must decide what type of man he wants to be.

Among the new releases this week is Brian Duffield’s No One Will Save You, a home invasion with an alien twist starring Kaitlyn Dever and debuting on Hulu on September 22. With it comes the realization of how scarcely populated the sci-fi horror subgenre gets regarding the iconic Gray aliens. These quintessential aliens have emerged recently in the news, but their cinematic counterparts are rarer. That’s a shame, considering how effectively they induce terror, as evidenced by M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs (on Max).
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the quieter alien invasions. These sci-fi horror films revolve around the Grays and similar extraterrestrials that are more content to invade and toy with their prey quietly.

Succession’s Sarah Snook is returning to the stage in London, and possibly Broadway, to take on an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, a dark tale of a portrait that ages as its subject remains forever young.
The Emmy-nominated actress will have the gargantuan task of playing all 26 characters in Dorian Gray when it opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End in January 2024 for a limited 12-week season.
It’s a mammoth undertaking for a solo artist who will be required to be on stage for two hours without an interval.
The show was devised by Kip Williams, the artistic director of Australia’s celebrated Sydney Theatre Company. It premiered in Sydney with actress Eryn Jean Norvill creating the part — or parts, because there are 26 of them.
Those connected with it have described the show as “cine-theatre.”

“Those About to Die,” AGC Television’s upcoming gladiator series from Roland Emmerich, stars Anthony Hopkins and boasts a cast drawn from across Europe and the Middle East. It’s also financially innovative.
Rather than rely on a single, deep-pocketed streamer to write the check for the pricey series, budgeted at $145 million for the first season, AGC adopted a split rights structure: U.S. rights are licensed to Peacock, European rights to Hep, the Herbert Kloiber Sr./Constantin joint venture, and AGC International distributing in the rest of the world.
AGC chairman and CEO Stuart Ford takes pride in proving the naysayers wrong with financing for the project set in ancient Rome and based on Daniel P. Mannix’s book of the same name.

Hollywood studios tried to put Covid-19 in the rear-view mirror in 2022, but cinemas in China were shut for part of the year, there were periods with little new product for screens, the global box office rose 28.4 percent to $25.7 billion (below pre-pandemic levels), and ramped up spending on productions and marketing of expanded slates affected some bottom lines. In some cases, a particularly profitable 2021 also made for particularly difficult earnings comparisons last year. Blockbusters helped the likes of Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. and Universal to grow their profits though, as The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual analysis shows. Fueled by Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount saw the biggest year-to-year percentage change in profit.

Joy Sunday, who stars as Bianca Barclay in the Netflix series Wednesday, has an unattainable crush. Though the actor’s character has enough of a woeful time winning the affections of Wednesday’s Xavier (Percy Hynes White), even Bianca’s siren song isn’t going to win her the heart of this literary hero.

Undoubtedly, fans know Sunday best for her role as the silver-eyed siren in the Netflix series Wednesday. Introduced in the show as “the closest thing to Nevermore royalty,” Bianca is the coolest girl in school.
As the idea of popularity is mainly based upon the opinion of those who think about things like popularity, Bianca isn’t much of a fan of the socially disinterested Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega). Bianca’s dislike for Wednesday only...

After searching for treasure in the Amazon and venturing to the far reaches of the galaxy, James Gray is returning home. Armageddon Time finds the director telling a partially autobiographical story as it relates to the life of Jewish family growing up in 1980s Queens. Led by Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Banks Repeta, Jaylin Webb, Tovah Feldshuh, Ryan Sell, and Anthony Hopkins, the film premiered at Cannes Film Festival and after a few fall festival stops, it’ll come to theaters in late October. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived.
David Katz said in his review, “It finds the specific in micro-gradations of the specific rather than suggest one family’s struggle represents anything more than itself. It’s a deeply observed New York story airing a middle-class Jewish family’s dirty laundry for all to see. The relevance of bringing up these more symbolic family...

Agbo’s The Gray Man is climbing the ladder toward becoming one of Netflix’s most watched movies ever over its first 28 days. The one it will eclipse next is Agbo’s Extraction, with The Adam Project and Birdbox within hailing distance on the streamer’s all-time list.
“The goal was to provide audiences with some fun and heart. Clearly they’re responding,” Russo said. He and Anthony Russo are directing Millie Bobby Brown in The Electric State for Netflix, and they’re thinking about the sequel to The Gray Man, which will have Ryan Gosling back as the covert government agent/assassin. “Moving forward, the struggle for Sierra Six will be about whether he can forge a new destiny away from the CIA, or is forever fated to be an agent of death,” Russo told Deadline.

After eight days, it’s over. That’s how long the Russo Bros.’ “The Gray Man” topped Netflix’s domestic chart for most-watched movies — only to be replaced by the new release of another Netflix Original, “Purple Hearts,” a low-budget military-immigrant romance starring singer-actress Sofia Carson (“Descendants”) and Nicholas Galitzine (“Cinderella”). “The Gray Man” didn’t disappear — it dropped to #2 — but that can’t have been the Netflix expectation for a 200 million action film from the directors of “Avengers: Endgame,” the biggest theatrical release in the last six years, starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas.
The streamer reported that “Gray” amassed over 88 million hours in worldwide viewing its initial weekend, the fifth highest for an original film. That’s 60 million fewer hours than last year’s “Red Notice” starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. “Red” spent 12 days as #1, including two full weekends, but more important...

Jordan Peele covets chaotic windstorms and surreal time leaps, so he should also appreciate the cultural phenomenon he’s now helped create: People this week are actually talking about movies again. Even grownup movies.
Obsessive movie talk hasn’t happened in a long time. Peele’s Nope is selling tickets, but it’s also stirring argument about topics like “cinematic allegory,” with the discussion spilling into other films of the moment.
I’ve even run into filmgoers who are dividing their day between the company of Court Gentry or Kya Clark. Court’s principal attribute is that no one knows him. His polar opposite is Kya, the secretive “marsh girl” who millions of readers originally encountered in the best seller Where the Crawdads Sing.

Is it Oscar time for James Gray? The director’s new film, “Armageddon Time,” is one of the few competition titles debuting at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, so it is also one of the few likely candidates that may have an impact on the Oscar race.
While Gray’s previous work like “The Immigrant,” “The Lost City of Z,” and “Ad Astra” tends to do better with critics than audiences, this new one may end up pleasing both groups. “Armageddon Time” is a memoir-ish drama, set in Queens, New York during the 1980s, seen through the eyes of a sixth-grader named Paul, played by Banks Repeta. His parents are Emmy-winner Jeremy Strong and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway, and his grandparents are two-time Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins and four-time Tony-nominee Tovah Feldshuh. Weirdly enough, Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, figures in the story, and is played by John Diehl. Recent Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain...

Military ensemble pictures work well when the excitement is all about the job and working under pressure: Charlton Heston, Stacy Keach, Ned Beatty and even David Carradine are excellent in this credible story about a near-impossible rescue of submariners trapped 1400 feet below. It’s a solid Navy disaster scenario, unusually authentic and realistic — until the dramatists require actor Ronny Cox to act like an emotional idiot. Those U.K. disc producers do it justice with some excellent extras, including a piece with a Navy specialist who worked with the rescue craft seen in the movie… and who later became a well-known film historian, author and film series organizer.
