I'm in my mid-70's and read the book recently; it strongly reinforced my opinion that white America didn't (and doesn't) treat black America that well.
I remember my mother telling me she took me to see the film "High Noon" when I was a pre-teen in the 1950's, and I never shut up asking her about this scrawny dog that crossed the road at the beginning of the movie, never to reappear.
So I couldn't help get a nostalgic feeling when Dana brings the cat back in time (not in the book, by the way). I don't suppose many pre-teens will watch this show, so no worries there.
It was an okay way to start the series if you hadn't read the book, since there were so many dumb changes made (many outlined in reviews under the entire series page).
