Really enjoying the series so far!
djberman-5968527 March 2022
It has been pretty slow paced so far but I am still enjoying the slow build of suspense. I'm disappointed that there are only two episodes left, and I hope they renew for another series. The plot has so much potential and despite some weak acting/actors, I am really enjoying the series so far!

Belonged Earlier in the Season
ahmadz83919 December 2022
"Broken Windows, Open Doors," the eighth episode, was a much-needed slow burn that belonged earlier in the season. Harold Perrineau puts in a solid performance as Boyd, finally bringing some life to the character and making it the first performance that felt noteworthy in the show.

This episode does a beautiful job of tying together all the plot points from previous episodes. Though there was room for improvement, I was pleased with the writing; it bodes well for the series' future.

Seeing the characters settling their differences and making smart decisions was refreshing. For the first time, I felt an emotional connection to the characters, making it the most promising episode in terms of character growth.

It's almost intolerable to watch Jim, the show's worst character. One can only hope that he will soon change or that someone will finally confront him.

This episode's flashbacks were skilfully executed, but it's crucial to strike a healthy balance and avoid overusing them. The nods to "Lost" are a nice touch, but one hopes they stay that way and the show doesn't follow in "Lost's" footsteps.

Overall, this was a good setup episode, and hopefully, the rest of the season can wrap up nicely.

Rating: 7.2/10 (Good, It Gets the Job Done)

It's starting to pick up speed

We learn quite a bit at this point. A good pace of development, but it is a pity that 8 series have already arrived and only two more remain. A couple of series in the middle were very slow, with a lot of talk that took time. At this rate, a series of 24 series can be created by slowly pulling everything. In short series, this traditionally means that a) in the last two series many events will be compressed, everything will happen in a hurry, without really explaining anything, or b) at the most interesting moment the season will end to make viewers wait a year until next season. Neither option is pleasant. Unfortunately, because I really like both the idea and the performance (except for some weak actors, of course, but they are everywhere).

Most beautiful episode yet
camilorg44017 June 2023
In short, this show is the best show since LOST, it took only 13 years but we finally have a great show again.

The people with the negative comments are missing the point. This chapter shows the backstory of Sheriff Boyd and his family, how his wife died and why his son doesn't want to talk to him anymore.

Please ignore the negative comments. Some people are just dedicated to hate for the sake of hating.

Negative comment "this make no sense". To you I say this: This is fantasy/horror You knew that from episode one, what are you doing watching episode 8.

Negative comment "Chronologically broken". To you I say this: It's a flashback, non linear is the definition of a flashback.

And I could keep going, but you get the idea.

This episode was an absolute BANGER

A lot of answers revealed, more back story, new mysteries to be unfolded in the upcoming two episodes, a really nice setup for what is anticipated to be the climax in the next two episodes. This series needs more episodes for sure in season 2! Feels like westworld type of series just brilliant!

Follow The Protocol!!!
wandernn1-81-68327418 April 2023
So in this ep. You get the flashback that shows you how Boyd /wife and son arrived in the town. Abby, a prior marine and Boyd's bad mama wife, doesn't take the transition to prisoner in the town quite as well as Boyd and son do.

+1 Star for the convo between Boyd and his son as he leaves town...

Boyd and Sara start their adventure into the woods!!!

Really not a lot happens in this ep. Just the flashback on Boyd and his family really. Oh and Father Khatri....poor Father Khatri!!!

6/10.

And IMDB has now made it so a review has to have 600 characters before it can be entered. I really don't expect that to last very long because people are sure to complain about it. But until that happens I guess we have to expect reviews to be long winded and sometimes about absolutely nothing to do with the show in question.

Another resolving episode that I wanted to see.
garyvines-0129018 May 2023
I have been searching for a show to fill the void that "The Walking Dead" left when they went off. To be honest, when Rick Grimes wasn't around anymore. This show is filling that void for me. There's a Sheriff, with a son and they have tension. Also, TWD had a lot of good character development in earlier episodes that made you like them. That is what this show, especially this episode did for me that I liked.

I was irritated at first when I found out that the Sheriff had a son and that their relationship was fractured. It was a little cliché to me, but I really liked the characters and there is a resolution that I wanted to have happen that did. I hope I'm not giving away too much.

I agree with some of the other reviews in that I don't care too much for time jumping in an episode. It needs to complete one time reference and then onto the next. That is the ONLY thing I didn't like about this episode as that minus that, this has been one of my favorite episodes so far.

I like the Sheriff, Ellis, Fatima, the Father of the family, the doctor woman and the woman that runs the house.

I don't care for the Sara character, the children and wife of the family and Jade. The jury is out about the Kenny Character. I want to like him but I'm not sure yet.

Chronologically broken.
hosenoggin28 March 2022
I really hate when TV shows or movies fly around a timeline willy-nilly with no notice or connection. It's very tough to follow. It's poor writing.

Sometimes it can be done well using title/text notices or good directing. This seriess has been up-and-down for me with some episodes being great, then some, like this one, disappointing.

So far, so good.
teresakt-9632024 October 2022
Really enjoying the series, there always seems to be something happening in each episode as the plot progresses. The acting is good, the dialogue is good. Only problem is, for some reason season 1 episode 1-8 is all I can manage to view on Paramount plus. It also shows this on IMDb when you look up season 1 episodes, showing only eight episodes viewable on Paramount plus so where are the other two viewable? . I am accessing my Paramount Plus subscription through Apple TV and there are only eight episodes listed on here. Why is that? Where is episode 9 & 10 of Season 1? This is as of October 24, 2022.

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 8: After the better previous episode featuring activity, some thrill and creatures presence, this episode drops again in pace and interesting plots. Two more one left and I doubt very much that could be wrapped up in a satisfying manner.

IMD., even if needed, 250-300 characters is the right amount, not the 600 characters requirement.

Episode 8

Warning: Spoilers
"Broken Windows, Open Doors" finally gave us a little bit of the backstory for one of the main characters and how we got to the point that we are at. But the way they forced the explanation for the talismans was bad and I hope at some point we get something more substance driven.

I feel like they're setting things up for a big finale though, but we shall see. It is clear they are not going to wrap things up and get home, so what development will we get.

I guess there is the option of someone answering something on the antenna signal, but is that a big enough way to wrap things up for the season on?

Awful rushed backstory that makes no sense
hnt_dnl27 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Are these writers serious? LOL Are they trying to tell me that all these grown adult people had no idea of basic survival and community skills until Boyd and his family randomly popped up into town? Victor was a kid when he got stuck there and that was 40 years prior to the current timeline. So for close to 40 years none of these people knew what to do until Sheriff Boyd showed up? They were just hiding underground in all these conveniently constructed bunkers which I assume they made. So they had the wherewithal to construct elaborate bunkers, but couldn't figure out they could just stay in boarded up houses. None of them ever walked into the forest in the daytime to find that there was livestock? For FORTY YEARS they lived without these sustainable food sources? How did they not starve? Also, Boyd, his wife, and son (whose name I still can't remember because he's such a nothing character) just believed the priest immediately and didn't even try to just keep driving and get out of town. Also, why was this flashback even necessary at all? Boyd already said he found the Talismans in an earlier episode. Why did they need to have the scene of him finding them in the flashback? We already knew this. What was Boyd's wife thinking shooting up the town? There was nothing that indicated she was crazy until that point. Why didn't someone jump her while her back was turned and take the gun away? What's up with all the cloying monologues on this series? And why does flooded pants wearing Deputy Barney Fife get the worst ones? Most of these "actors" can't act, but this guy takes the cake. Also, he sounds like he hasn't even hit puberty yet. Whenever this "kid" opens his mouth, I'm begging for him to shut up already. Also, nice of Kristi trying to make the viewer believe she's remotely attracted to this doofus of a character. Why are these characters not communicating with each other? Jim and Jade know nothing about the Sheriff's plan and Boyd is oblivious to their plan. Why wouldn't Colony House Mother (another nothing character whose name I can't bother remembering) tell Boyd about the radio tower? Then maybe he would opt to go with the tower plan rather than trekking into the dangerous woods with a killer! While Harold Perrineau is by default is probably doing the best acting on this show, that's not saying very much as even he is a victim of some really bad, cliche writing. For example why would he leave the crazy diner girl uncuffed and unguarded in the shed where she can come back into town and kill someone else, yet decide to handcuff her after he gets back there? So you trusted to leave her alone for an extended period, but not when you got back there? And good writing is the key ingredient to a good story being executed well. Unfortunately, this intriguing story continues to be hampered by bad writing and acting.

A Mediocre Entry with Missed Opportunities
ameerbarram6 July 2023
The eighth episode of "From" falls short of expectations, presenting a mediocre entry in the series. Titled "A Mediocre Entry with Missed Opportunities," this episode fails to live up to the strong storytelling and character development seen in previous installments, leaving viewers disappointed and longing for more.

One of the major drawbacks of this episode is the lackluster character development. The writers fail to delve deeper into the motivations and backstories of the main characters, resulting in a lack of emotional connection with the audience. The performances of the cast members also feel uninspired, with little depth or nuance brought to their roles.

The pacing of the episode is uneven and disjointed. The plot unfolds in a haphazard manner, with key information being revealed abruptly and without proper buildup. This lack of cohesion makes it difficult for viewers to fully engage with the story, as they are left feeling confused and disconnected. The director's choice to focus on unnecessary subplots further detracts from the overall narrative, leaving the audience feeling unsatisfied.

Visually, the episode fails to impress. The cinematography lacks the stunning visuals seen in previous episodes, with shots feeling uninspired and poorly composed. The use of lighting and color palettes does little to enhance the mood or atmosphere of the scenes, resulting in a visually dull viewing experience. The production design and costumes also feel lackluster, lacking the attention to detail and creativity seen in earlier episodes.

Furthermore, the episode fails to tie up loose ends or introduce new twists and turns to keep the audience engaged. Instead, it meanders aimlessly, leaving viewers wondering what the purpose of certain plot points and character arcs are. The lack of suspense and intrigue is a major disappointment, as the series has previously excelled in keeping viewers on their toes.

However, one redeeming aspect of this episode is the strong performances of a few supporting cast members. Despite the overall lackluster nature of the episode, these actors bring depth and nuance to their roles, providing some much-needed moments of emotional resonance.

A disasterclass on non-linearity
bosporan11 April 2022
All over the place! Flashbacks and non-linear storytelling can be effective. In this episode it is a cluster-jumble, clumsily used to camouflage a vapid, vacuous plot. The focus is largely on Boyd and his backstory which is comedic and lacks credibility; probably not the writers' intention.

Pure filler - we learn nothing about the polaroid of Victor, the implied violence from last time, the tree hideout, Ethan's link to this place, wolves ... the important things. The viewer is thrown the bone of discovering how the talismans were discovered (though not their origin). I confess to wondering about that, but in a show riddled with holes and inconsistencies it is hardly pressing!
