Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first. We previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy, who was recently seen on season 2 of The White Lotus, and now Deadline reports that Fahy is being joined in the cast by Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson. Deadline notes that child actor...

As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th. But over the last few months, the filmmakers have come to realize they need some extra time to make Saw XI something special, so the release has been pushed back a year, to September 26, 2025. So Lionsgate has unveiled a teaser trailer asking fans to play the waiting game, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Saw X screenwriters Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (who also wrote Jigsaw and Spiral: From the Book of Saw) have let it be known that they’re not coming back for the new sequel, but Saw X director Kevin Greutert...

Drop has even found its lead already: Meghann Fahy, who was recently seen on season 2 of The White Lotus.

According to THR, the Paranormal Activity franchise is set to become a stage play. I can’t say I saw that one coming.
Simon Friend, who commissioned the Life of Pi stage play, picked up the license to Paranormal Activity and is seeking to bring it to the West End. Grey House scribe Levi Holloway has signed on to write the play, but the project is still in early development at this time. Although I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a fan of the franchise, I’ve got to admit that I’m a little curious about how they plan to adapt the found-footage story to the stage.
The original Paranormal Activity movie was written and directed by Oren Peli and followed Katie and Micah, a young couple who have recently moved to a new house and are being terrorized by a demon that has stalked Katie since childhood. The...

From "A Nightmare on Elm Street" to "Friday the 13th," "Hellraiser" to "Child's Play (aka Chucky)," '80s horror fans love a long-running franchise. While the 21st century doesn't have as many lengthy horror franchises per capita as the 1980s does, it still has a decent amount — and most of those are thanks to the efforts of one Jason Blum, Mr. Blumhouse himself.
Over the course of his career, Blum has sought to keep the traditions of vintage horror cinema alive not necessarily in the films themselves, but in broader ways. To wit, he's often found a lot of his films easily making their budgets back (and then some) at the box office; this year alone has seen "M3GAN" and "Insidious: The Red Door" hit the jackpot at cinemas, successes that are not only clear indicators of horror's continual popularity as a genre, but also Blum's savvy in keeping budgets low.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Prime Video is relying on a heaping dose of fun library movies.
The first of the month brings a big influx of worthwhile flicks, including Galaxy Quest, Saw, F9: The Fast Saga, and Jurassic Park (the last two via Amazon’s Freevee free streaming option). Then some other recents hits arrive later on like the appropriately titled Cocaine Bear on Aug. 15 and the Chris Pine-starring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Aug. 25.
August also sees the arrival of a major Amazon Original movie in the form of Red, White & Royal Blue. Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Over on the TV side of things, Prime Video subscribers can check out the Sigourney Weaver project The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Aug. 4 and Harlan Coben’s Shelter on Aug.

The Losers gather at Boston International Airport to close out their coverage on Stephen King‘s Cell. Now that they’ve explored the 2006 novel, they’re dialing into the 2016 adaptation. Originally announced as an Eli Roth project two months after the book’s release, the film spent 10 torturous years in development hell before finally being unleashed.
What came to fruition is a feature by filmmaker Tod Williams that stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Owen Teague, Stacey Keach, and Joshua Mikel. What’s more, King himself penned the screenplay alongside 2009’s Last House on the Left scribe Adam Alleca. Was it worth the wait?

This article discusses difficult subject matter including (but not limited to) postpartum psychosis.
Bess Wohl's timely and powerful "Baby Ruby" opens with the main character Jo (Noémie Merlant) carefully making a banner for her baby shower. Her methodical cutting and placement of the letters demonstrate how much she enjoys being organized and in control, as well as the pressure she feels to curate the perfect life and aesthetic for her website and social media pages. Jo is not just a person or a mother-to-be: she is a brand. After the birth of Ruby, she discovers motherhood is far more difficult than glossy Instagram photos portray it to be.
The entire film is through her point of view as she spirals into a whirlwind of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. She also starts having unsettling hallucinations that turn out to be symptoms of postpartum psychosis. One of the most captivating aspects...

Sunday Am Update: Typically, horror movies fall apart on a Saturday night, especially ones with bad reviews and lackluster audience exits. But Universal/Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween Kills kept it together, even with a day-and-date Peacock component.
The David Gordon Green-directed sequel, the 12th in the franchise, kept on course for a $50.35M 3-day, slightly higher than what we saw yesterday morning off a $17.2M Saturday, -25% from Friday. That’s a better Friday-to-Saturday hold, percent-wise, than previous Blumhouse October horror pics Paranormal Activity 3 and Paranormal Activity 2, both -35%. Also, Halloween Kills’ Saturday beats Paranormal Activity 2’s Saturday of $13M.
Overall, Halloween Kills is the best 3-day US/Canada opening we’ve seen for a horror movie during the pandemic, beating Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II ($47.5M), and it’s the best opening for an R-rated movie during the pandemic, blowing away Warner Bros...

Exclusive: Timberman-Beverly Productions has partnered with filmmaker Tod Williams (The Door In the Floor) on a drama series focused on the rarely explored origin story of one of history’s most iconic figures, Napoleon Bonaparte. The project, which is being taken out to the streaming marketplace, hails from ABC Signature where Timberman-Beverly is under a deal.
Bonaparte’s rise to become the emperor of France is possibly the grandest epic driven by a single individual in all of human history, except it isn’t the story of an individual at all. It’s the story of a family, more specifically, a mother and her eight children, rising up from obscurity to become the most powerful dynasty in the world. Beautiful, unruly, intelligent, and competitive, but united as a pack of wolves when threatened. In this family, blood is thicker than everything.
The series will explore Napoleon the son, brother, and...

Terri Taylor has been the in-house casting director for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Prods. since 2013, a job that’s unusual at the studio level. Blum and Taylor have built a language and relationship that goes back even further, to the studio’s 2010 “Paranormal Activity 2.”
When she’s not working on casting Blumhouse productions, Taylor invests her time in mentoring other casting directors within the Blumhouse world. “She is my mentor,” casting director John McAlary says. The two first met in 2007 when he first worked as an assistant. “She oversaw the process on “Welcome to Blumhouse.” He adds.
With “The Craft: Legacy,” the reboot of Andrew Fleming’s 1996 classic, debuting on-demand on Oct. 28, Taylor talks with Variety about the type of actors the studio is looking for, and shares her process for matching talent to story.

Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton will start in a currently untitled body-swap thriller from Christopher Landon, director of the “Happy Death Day” films, Blumhouse announced on Thursday. Landon will write and direct the film.
Newton will star as a high school student who suddenly switches bodies with a deranged serial killer, played by Vaughn. She will have less than 24 hours to find a way to reverse the switch before it becomes permanent.
The project continues a longtime relationship between Landon and Blumhouse going back to “Paranormal Activity 2” in 2010, which Landon co-wrote. Lando wrote three more films in the “Paranormal Activity” series before going on to direct “Happy Death Day” in 2017 and its 2019 sequel, “Happy Death Day 2U.”
Michael Kennedy is co-writing the upcoming film with Landon, with Jason Blum producing.

Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton are in talks to star in Blumhouse’s untitled body-swapping thriller with “Happy Death Day’s” Chris Landon directing.
The film follows a teenager (Newton) who, after swapping bodies with a deranged serial killer (Vaughn), discovers she has less than 24 hours before the change becomes permanent.
Landon co-wrote the script with Michael Kennedy. Jason Blum will produce the pic.
Landon, a longtime Blumhouse collaborator, directed the two “Happy Death Day” movies; “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” which he also wrote; and he wrote “Paranormal Activity 3” and the screenplays for “Paranormal Activity 2” and “Paranormal Activity 4.”
After years in comedy films, Vaughn has been taking on more roles in adult dramas and thrillers, most recently appearing in the cop drama “Dragged Across Concrete” opposite Mel Gibson. He also has the drama “Sebert” bowing at Toronto next month, and was recently seen in the coming-of-age tale “Fighting With My Family.

Exclusive, 2nd Update 9:05Pm: Jordan Peele’s Us is now looking forward to a $6M+ Thursday night. That beats the preview nights of The Nun ($5.4M), A Quiet Place ($4.3M), and it’s just under the midnight previews of Paranormal Activity 2 ($6.3M, 31% of its $20.1M Friday for a $40.6M three-day).
1st update, Thursday 7:39Pm: Our box office intel says that Jordan Peele’s Us from Universal/Monkeypaw Productions is on track for a $4M-plus Thursday night, possibly even $5M off showtimes that began at 7Pm.
These numbers could always fluctuate, and even if Us drops below $4M, it’s still a great result, easily putting away the $1.8M Thursday night preview for Peele’s Oscar-winning feature directorial debut Get Out back in February 2017.
Does Us make all of its cash upfront will be the question everyone will be asking until Saturday night. It’s a different type...

As horror fans (might or might not) know, you can’t welcome the dawning of a new year without another direct-to-vod Amityville horror story. Did you see the one about an Amityville dollhouse? Amityville theater? Amityville mantle clock. Hungry franchise filmmakers have long woven their individual threads into Long Island’s haunted history, but Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders eyes a return to “factuality.” Based on the true story of Ronnie DeFeo, this is the crime that started it all.
Thank Paimon. An Amityville movie that’s finally based on actual events. Too bad it’s exhaustingly inferior to most canon or non-canon Amityville flicks – a sheepish drag that steals from Paranormal Activity around every ominous corner.
Farrands transports viewers to the three-week period where Ronald “Butch” DeFeo Jr. (John Robinson) becomes possessed by voices (according to testimonial), walls himself from reality, and eventually murders his family on November 13th,...

Final Sunday Am after 7:49Am post: Glass, like a horror movie, was front-loaded in regards to its $14.6M Saturday being down 9% from its $16M opening (which included previews). This is a different path from M. Night Shyamalan’s previous film Split which saw a 13% spike between the two days going from $14.6M to $16.5M.
This puts Glass at a 4-day that’s under $50M at $47M per Universal. Some think the Blumhouse/Bvi production can still hit $50M in four days which would be spot on at the low-end of Uni’s projections. We deep-dived in the previous update how rival major studios had high expectations for Glass as they saw a 4-day between $57M-$70M and avoided competing against the film. The problem here? Rivals and exhibitors were working off Split‘s gas, however, Universal always knew internally that the opening was well below that and tried to manage expectations.

With the worst August in twenty years and worst summer in over ten years now behind us, this weekend will turn up the heat as Fall 2017 gets underway. Debuting in over 4,100 theaters, Warner Bros. and New Line's adaptation of Stephen King's It is looking to break more than just a few records while Open Road's Home Again starring Reese Witherspoon will quietly target a much smaller audience as a counter-programming option. Before it even hits theaters, WB and New Line's It has already broken records as its 4,103 theaters is the largest opening for an R-rated film ever, topping the 4,071 theaters Logan opened in earlier this year. Obviously, that also makes it the largest opening for an R-rated horror movie, improving on the 3,761 theaters Alien: Covenant debuted in earlier this year when it opened with $36 million. This, of course, begs the question So how much is it going to open with?...

Akiva Goldsman may be best known as an Oscar-winning screenwriter whose credits include “A Beautiful Mind” and “Cinderella Man,” but he appears to have found a second act as a horror director. At the inaugural edition of The Overlook Film Festival, a horror film festival taking place at the Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood, Oregon, Goldsman premiered “Stephanie,” the low-budget supernatural horror film that he directed for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions.
After the screening, Goldsman and Blum shared some breaking news with the audience: The pair would be teaming up again for a new adaptation of “Firestarter,” Stephen King’s 1980 novel about a young girl with pyrokensis and the government agency on her trail.
“No one knows about this at all,” said Blum, who also received the festival’s Visionary Award for his support of horror films. “Akiva and Stephen King have a long relationship. We wouldn’t do...

★★★☆☆ John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson should make a thing of appearing in Stephen King adaptations together. This, their second rodeo, isn't in the same league as 2007's underrated 1408, but it gives the tired zombie survival horror subgenre a much-needed recharge and does more than enough to entertain as B-movie fun. The expression 'throwback' can be deployed for either positive or negative purposes, but here it's almost entirely positive. Tod Williams, a journeyman best known for Paranormal Activity 2, has managed to transfer King's very popular brand of horror with a good deal of success.

Give “Cell” points for narrative expediency. It wastes no time bringing about the complete collapse of Western Civilization. Over the elapsed time of a single phone call, graphic novelist Clay Riddell (John Cusack) watches the normal bustle of his surroundings at a Boston airport erupt in a full-scale brawl. The inciting incident isn’t an act of domestic terrorism, but a mysterious electronic pulse that turns all of the terminal’s cell phone users into unrepentant rage monsters. Because Clay was on a pay phone, he’s able to watch in horror as employees and passengers alike descend into a series of increasingly horrific, animalistic displays.
Despite the indiscriminate nature of these newly-birthed beasts (some are violent, some seem intent on self-harm, some seem content to convulse), the sight of innocent bystanders getting launched over escalator handrails and a member of the airport security detail ripping out the intestines of...

Actors Samuel L. Jackson (1408) and John Cusack re-team for another Stephen King written film endeavour - Cell. Published as an apocalyptic novel in 2006, Cell has been completed by director Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) and many others. Now, the film will be released this summer through Video-on-demand and in a few theatres, one month later. The film's first trailer shows dire scenarios as a virus spreads from cellphone to cellphone. The exciting trailer for Cell is hosted here. For more on the story, Cell focuses on Clay (Cusack). He witnesses a viral pandemic in a over-populated airport. Escaping to an underground railway, Clay is determined to return to his family. But, thousands of rabid, hive-minded killers stand in the way. This father and husband will have to find others in order to fight his way back to his family as the "phoners" home in on their position. Director Tod Williams is no stranger to horror.

This one’s been a long time coming. Stephen King is a genre unto himself at this point. A “Stephen King movie” can be anything from Stand By Me to Maximum Overdrive, and the only thing they all have in common is him as the original source of the material. It seems like a given at this point that if King publishes something, it will eventually be turned into a film. Some books just take longer than others to make the jump. For example, Hulu just wrapped up 11.22.63, the eight-part adaptation of King’s time-travel story about trying to stop the murder of JFK from taking place. Co-produced by Bad Robot and starring James Franco, that was not the first attempt at cracking that adaptation. Jonathan Demme was the first director to try to take a crack at that one, and he was going to do it as a feature film.

At long last the first trailer for the feature film adaptation of Stephen King's Cell has been released! I've been anxiously waiting for this movie since I first read the book and it's almost here. The movie stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, and Isabelle Fuhrman and it looks like a solid adaptation. King, who co-wrote the script for the movie, previously said:
“I enjoyed working on ‘Cell’ and love the way it turned out. Kip Williams has made a scary and thoroughly entertaining movie. But you may want to put your cell phone in the freezer after seeing it.”
Cusack and Jackson previously worked together on the big screen adaptation of 1408, which I really enjoyed. It looks like they were able to bring that same magic to bringing the story of Cell to life. Here's the synopsis:

I’ve been wondering what has been going on with the big screen adaption of Stephen King’s Cell. The film completed shooting last year with Samuel L. Jackson, John Cusack, and Isabelle Fuhrman and has since been looking for distribution.
Well, it finally found it. Saban Films has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the film, which means it will be released eventually. Cell was directed by Tod “Kip” Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) from a script co-written by King and Adam Alleca (The Last House on the Left). If you’re not familiar with the story, here’s a brief synopsis:
When a powerful signal is broadcast across mobile networks worldwide, cell phone users’ minds are instantly and dangerously re-programmed. Heading north through New England in search of his wife and son, Clay Riddell (John Cusack) is joined by a group of survivors hoping to fend off the bloodthirsty and hyper-connected “phoners.

Stephen King is a pretty busy guy lately. He recently produced the currently-airing adaptation of his loopy time-travel story 11.22.63 over on Hulu, while simultaneously helping to guide the long-awaited big screen adaptation of The Dark Tower into theaters (tentatively coming in January of 2017). There’s even that Revival movie coming down the line. On top of all that, it’s easy to forget that Cell — one of his more modern stories — is on the release slate for later this year.
Today, new images from the movie were shared online, focusing on the post-apocalyptic struggles of its lead character Clay Riddell (John Cusack) as he bands together with Tom McCourt (Samuel L. Jackson), Alice Maxwell (Isabelle Fuhrman), and Charles Ardai (Stacy Keach) as they all fight for survival against a zombie uprising. The film’s plot reads satisfyingly close to the source material, from Clay’s desperate search for his family...

Do the films that scared us in our youth, from Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Blair Witch Project - still get under the skin?
Spoilers for each of the movies mentioned in the assorted subheads lie within
Are scary movies as scary as they used to be? Did the movies that scared you as a child still scare you when you watched them as an adult?
As a very young child, my fear-reflex was helped along by my older cousins, who used to lock me in a room with films like The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist playing through a too-high-to-reach television. It was like being trapped in a PG version of Saw: “Want to play a game? Find a way to reach the VHS player and stop the Poltergeist tape before the clown pops out from under the bed, or be left with life-long phobias and mental instability.

This personal admission might reveal my youthfulness, but Paranormal Activity is one of the first movies that kickstarted my horror obsession, leading to a franchise I curiously watched morph with every entry. I’ll defend Paranormal Activity 2, where most people don’t, and alternatively, I saw Paranormal Activity 3 as the franchise’s inevitable decline. While we can all agree that Paranormal Activity 4 is a cut-and-dry piece of dookie, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones brought me back with a screaming vengeance, ready for more door-slamming bravado.
So, moment of truth – does Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension close Blumhouse’s near-iconic franchise with a boisterously enraged bang? Nah, it’s more like a inevitably cluttered whimper that attempts to answer all outstanding questions while simultaneously tying a neat little bow around Toby’s debut appearance.
Franchise editor Gregory Plotkin steps in to direct this latest bout of demonic angst,...

Meet the Paranormal Activity film that promises to wrap the series up! Here's our review of The Ghost Dimension...
This is a spoiler-free review, which includes plot details from the previous five instalments in the Paranormal Activity series.
Back in 2009, Paramount masterminded a revolutionary marketing campaign for Oren Peli's micro-budget found footage horror movie Paranormal Activity. With endorsements from the likes of Steven Spielberg, it was arguably the most hyped film of its year and certainly the most profitable, returning $193m on a $15,000 budget.
Sequels abounded and the films comfortably usurped the annual Halloween slot occupied by the Saw franchise over the course of the following three sequels. 2013 was supposed to see two Paranormal Activity movies - a “Latin-American oriented” spin-off at the beginning of the year and then a fifth instalment at Halloween as usual, but the cool reception to Paranormal Activity 4 apparently led...
