Whatever we may think of James Corden in real life this is a reminder that primarily he is just a fantastic actor! And of course writer. Before he became famous as Smithy from Gavin and Stacey he was already being hailed as one of Britain's great new actors especially for his stage role in History Boys, then in the TV series Fat Friends, where he met Gavin and Stacey co-star and co-writer Ruth Jones.
He is just brilliant in this and carries the show, with a compex and nuanced portrayal of a tortured man in love. The supporting cast are also excellent.
The frequent references to whales and Moby Dick point to the themes of chasing your dreams to the point of obsession, perhaps to the exclusion of all and everyone else. I only started watching this casually but have become hooked, it's an excellent examination of relationships and of our complex psyches.
