One of the greatest visionary directors that Hollywood had the privilege of hosting, Stanley Kubrick revolutionized the process of filmmaking for the foreseeable future. The director of such instant classics as 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining got around to claiming Tom Cruise, the biggest movie star in the world, in one of his movies shortly before his death.

‘Megalopolis’: After Wild Speculation, What Exactly Is So ‘Bats—’ About Francis Ford Coppola’s Opus?
Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for “Megalopolis”
Francis Ford Coppola has made quite the return to directing. Industry chatter about his new film “Megalopolis,” a passion project more than 20 years in the making, has been churning since a late March screening for prospective buyers.
This week, reports said Coppola was struggling to find a splashy distribution deal for his 135-minute epic, about a dystopia in the throes of an energy revolution. As a response — call it cosmic or intentional — Coppola rebounded by booking a spot in competition at the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival, where the movie is looking to reset the narrative. It’s not dissimilar to the skepticism that greeted another Coppola passion project, “Apocalypse Now,” which was derided by many as a vanity project before it screened at Cannes as a work in progress, going on to capture the Palme d’Or.
What fate awaits “Megalopolis” and how will...

Zac Efron once had a much-talked about love scene with on-screen partner Nicole Kidman in The Paperboy. Efron’s ex-partner, Michelle Rodriguez, was one of many who saw the feature. And she was as candid as usual about her thoughts.

Rodriguez confided that she enjoyed The Paperboy, although that didn’t seem to be the popular opinion at the time. The movie was a Matthew McConaughey-led picture directed by Lee Daniels, and featured several stars including John Cusack and David Oyelowo. Despite its star-power, the movie received mixed-reviews that leaned over to the negative. But Rodriguez didn’t care for the critics’ opinion.
“I say f*** them because they don’t get it,” Rodriguez once told Vulture. “He’s so good at keeping me entertained. When I don’t like the dialogue,...

A decade after his breakthrough role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, David Oyelowo says he is heartened by the long-overdue shift toward a more culturally diverse marketplace for onscreen storytelling.
As part of NATPE 2024’s official programming, Oyelowo appeared onstage in front of a lively crowd of 150 guests at the InterContinental Miami to discuss his wide-ranging career as an actor, director and producer before receiving The Hollywood Reporter’s “Trailblazer Award” — a commendation given to Hollywood creatives whose work reflects a commitment to amplifying marginalized creators and stories.
“Streaming has really democratized things and the generational impact is seismic,” said Oyelowo, who joins recent THR Trailblazer honorees America Ferrera, Eva Longoria and Niecy Nash-Betts in receiving the award. “I know what marginalization looks like. I know how stories can break down prejudices. I feel it deeply because I’ve experienced it.”

Zac Efron has already earned the best reviews of his career for the dark new professional wrestling film "The Iron Claw," and now he and his co-stars are opening up about the intense process of making the movie. In this week's Variety cover story, the former teen idol spoke about what it was like to embody real-life athlete and performer Kevin Von Erich, whose pro wrestler family was torn apart by a string of accidents and tragedies in the '80s and '90s. While Efron's preparation for the role doesn't sound like it was dangerous (he says he "learned the hard way about not sacrificing [his] real health for a look on camera" from past roles), it does come across as a pretty isolating and all-consuming experience.

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
We all have Oscar wins that we love, where the Academy decides to step out of line with convention and give it to someone doing truly exceptional work. Olivia Colman taking home Best Actress for "The Favourite" is a recent example I still cannot believe happened. We also have the awards we despise, where we cannot even fathom how the stars aligned to push something we consider to be truly terrible to the winners' circle, like "Crash" winning Best Picture.
Far more common are the awards given out where we understand how and why they won but vehemently disagree with the selection. Just from this past year, I'd put Brendan Fraser winning for "The Whale" and Jamie Lee Curtis winning for...

The Cannes Film Festival is designed to showcase the best of the best upcoming movies, meaning it's not surprising that many films shown there are met with praise and celebration. But in the decades since the festival kicked off in 1946, an unusual phenomenon has developed: movies at Cannes tend to receive very, very long standing ovations.
For example, on May 20, Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" received nine minutes of applause. Meanwhile, a five-minute or less standing ovation can sometimes be seen as a sign that the film didn't quite live up to expectations, with Variety reporting that "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" received a "lukewarm" five-minute ovation.
Ahead, learn more about standing ovations at Cannes.
What Movies Received the Longest Standing Ovations at Cannes?
The longest recorded standing ovation at Cannes was for "Pan's Labyrinth," which received a 22-minute-long block of applause in 2006, per Quartz.

Here are a few of the talented performers who went on to work with Disney even after their early years on the Disney Channel.

In an ironic twist, Nicole Kidman’s portrayal of TV icon Lucille Ball could lead to her first SAG Award win for film work. The celebrated actress has emerged as a frontrunner in a topsy turvy Lead Actress race this awards season, and the SAG Award might be her latest conquest.
Kidman is certainly no stranger to this awards ceremony. “Being the Ricardos” is her 15th SAG nomination. But it might shock you to learn that Kidman’s only win with the actor’s guild came from “Big Little Lies.” She’s earned individual nominations for the films “The Hours,” “Rabbit Hole,” “The Paperboy,” “Lion,” and “Bombshell,” as well as Ensemble bids for “Moulin Rouge!,” “The Hours,” “Nine,” and “Bombshell.” None of those acclaimed film roles yielded a victory.
SAG could finally endorse Kidman’s film career thanks to Lucille Ball. Aaron Sorkin’s biopic slips viewers behind the cameras...

Since the SAG Awards began handing out trophies for Best Film Actress in 1994, every single winner has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination. According to Gold Derby’s SAG Awards predictions for Film Actress, the five nominees will be Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”) and Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”).
Stewart’s performance as Princess Diana in “Spencer” comes in first place with 71/20 odds. This would be the first individual SAG Awards nomination for Stewart and her second overall following a Film Ensemble bid for 2007’s “Into the Wild.” In “Spencer,” Stewart portrays the Princess of Wales as she grapples with mental health issues and decides to end her decade-long marriage to Prince Charles.

A Christmas movie set in the eighties with a story centered around a child that is desperate to a Nintendo Entertainment System (Nes for short) as his main present?! 8-Bit Christmas is one of those movies that seems made for me (and I’m sure many other people of a similar age). In fact it could almost be written about me too – again, I’m sure there’s plenty of people that feel the same! Getting past the nostalgia though, can this movie remain entertaining.
The story is told through Neil Patrick Harris, as Jake, as an adult in modern day. He introduces his daughter to the Nes and then tells her the story of how he got it.

The latest in our series of writers defending films hated by many is an ode to the 1995 William Gibson adaptation starring Keanu Reeves as a tech antihero
Johnny Mnemonic, Robert Longo’s 1995 William Gibson adaptation, offers a wide target for derision. The more cynical among us might scoff at the depiction of technology run amok in “the future” (the film is set in 2021), the irrepressibly sweet earnestness of Keanu Reeves’ cynical antihero, and (spoiler alert) the salvation of humanity coming in the form of a cybernetically enhanced dolphin (“It’s a Fish!?!” yells an incredulous Keanu). The very premise of the story – that Keanu (as data smuggler Johnny) has so much information contained within his brain that it may explode at any time – may even be enough to raise a smirk.

Continuing out series of writers highlighting unfairly criticised films is a defence of Lee Daniels’ starry and steamy noir
To begin, a confession of professional negligence: I wasn’t at the now-notorious first Cannes press screening of Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy, where critics booed and bayed for blood with a vigour and volume exceptional even at a festival famed for feisty audience participation. Instead, having overslept and woken with a customary rosé hangover, I dragged myself to the rather more serene and less-attended catchup screening next door, which traditionally starts half an hour later. Perhaps it’s a false memory, but I could swear I recall hearing a general tremor of discontent from outside early into the show.

With victories for “The Piano Lesson” in 1996 and “Miss Evers’ Boys” in 1998, Alfre Woodard became the first double winner of the best TV movie/limited series actress prize at the SAG Awards. Only two actresses (Helen Mirren and Queen Latifah) have matched her feat since, and now Nicole Kidman (“The Undoing”) is looking to join the club.
Kidman faces off against Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) and Kerry Washington (“Little Fires Everywhere”). Kidman previously won this award for “Big Little Lies” in 2018. Coel and Taylor-Joy are SAG newcomers, while Blanchett has earned three wins for feature film performances. Washington was recognized in this category in 2017 for her role in “Confirmation,” but she has yet to win a SAG Award.

Being in the entertainment industry is challenging but comes with rewards, so when I was asked to talk about what Black history meant to me, I couldn’t start the conversation without mentioning the history of Black casting directors who made it possible for me to be in the position I am in now.
I am blessed to have been mentored by a casting legends Jaki Brown and Kimberly Hardin, two phenomenal women whose shoulders I stand on. They gave me an opportunity and platform to be a part of some of the greatest history in Black cinema.
There is also Monica Swan, Chemin Bernard and Robi Reed, who have all played a big part in the history of Hollywood, paving the way in championing diversity both on and off the screen.
Reuben Cannon, the first Black casting director in Hollywood, stated “African Americans don’t get the respect they deserve in Hollywood.

The first time I saw myself on-screen was in 1972. The film was “Lady Sings the Blues,” a cinematic masterpiece about jazz icon Billie Holiday. At 13 years old, I could not believe I was seeing Black people living large, dripping in diamonds and furs, and loving each other on the big screen. That experience changed my life and inspired me to become the filmmaker I am today. Nearly a half-century later, I remain indebted to everyone who made that movie. It is a significant part of my Black history. Filmmakers, journalists and historians around the world have showcased Billie Holiday’s glamour and musical talent. But it was much later in my career that I learned of Billie’s activism and the government’s persistent assault upon it. Most people do not know just how courageous Billie Holiday was — traveling through the Jim Crow South, defying the KKK, jeopardizing her own safety,...

Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is slated to have a big morning when Golden Globes nominations are announced on Feb. 3, with predicted bids for Best Film Drama, Drama Actress (Viola Davis) and Actor (Chadwick Boseman) and anticipated wins for its two leads. With so many high profile nominations in the offing, might one of its legendary featured players, Glynn Turman, come along for the ride with a surprise citation for Film Supporting Actor?
The Emmy-winning actor plays Toledo, Ma Rainey’s wise pianist who not only delivers a sensational August Wilson monologue about race and the leftovers of history, but also spars with Ma Rainey’s younger, ambitious trumpeter Levee (Boseman). Turman has started to collect kudos for his performance, landing nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards and the National Society of Film Critics and winning the Los Angeles Film Critics Association prize for Supporting Actor. The momentum he...

Actor Matthew McConaughey has recalled that no one was willing to cast him in Hollywood after he rejected romantic comedies.
McConaughey made a name for himself in Hollywood through romantic films such as "The Wedding Planner", "Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past" and "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days".
However, in order to move away from the generic image, he once even turned down a $14.5 million offer for a rom-com.
Now, during an appearance in "The Brian Buffini Show", the actor said he is glad that the self-imposed exile had worked in his favour, reports contactmusic.com.
He said: "Now, 14 months go by after that six months where nothing comes in, I call my agent every other day, 'What do you got?' 'Buddy, no one is even mentioning your name. I bring up your name they say, 'Don't even want to talk about it'."
The actor continued: "Now I'm going,...

Fresh off his first-ever Critics’ Choice TV nomination, “Fargo” featured player Glynn Turman is gaining momentum at the Golden Globes. In the fourth installment of the acclaimed FX anthology series, the Emmy-winning veteran actor played Doctor Senator, the sage right-hand man to Chris Rock’s leader of a Black crime syndicate in 1950s Kansas City. Though still predicted to miss the final list of nominees, Turman just broke into our top ten contenders in the Globes TV Supporting Actor category.
Turman currently sits in 10th place in our combined odds in this catch-all category up an impressive 12 spots since “Fargo” aired its season finale in November. Always a particularly crowded field because it brings together actors from dramas, comedies, and TV movies and limited series, this year’s supporting line-up boasts an impressive slate of predicted nominees, led by last year’s Emmy winner Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Brendan Gleeson...

Lee Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” is the next enigma in this awards season and could prove to be one of the more divisive entries. Daniels, who became the second Black filmmaker to be nominated for best director for 2009’s “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” (the first was John Singleton for 1991’s “Boyz N the Hood”) hasn’t captured the attention of voters since then. On the opening day of SAG voting and dropping its first trailer, it looks to angle for an Oscar play, in particular, for Andra Day as the iconic blues singer. Judging by some of the discussions, this is not the slam dunk contender pundits were expecting.
The film looks at Billie Holiday (Day) during the time in her career when she becomes a target by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover string operation led by Jimmy Fletcher, a Black Federal Agent.

It’s not always easy for a recording artist to transition to awards recognition for acting, but it happened in recent years for Oscar nominees Mary J. Blige (“Mudbound”) and Lady Gaga (“A Star is Born”). Now it could happen for R&b singer Andra Day, who has steadily been rising in our Best Actress odds for her title role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” Do you agree with our current odds that she’ll make the cut?
Day is best known as the Grammy-nominated singer of “Rise Up,” and she also sang the Oscar-nominated song “Stand Up for Something” from the 2017 film “Marshall.” In this film she plays legendary musician Billie Holiday at a time when she was the target of an undercover sting operation by federal narcotics agents. As of this writing we rank her fourth in the Best Actress Oscar race with 11/1 odds based on...

While Lee Daniels really got his start in Hollywood as a producer on films such as “Monster’s Ball” and “The Woodsman,” most film fans recognize him for his directorial efforts “The Paperboy,” “The Butler,” and of course, the Oscar-winning feature, “Precious.” But after a stint in TV, where he launched shows such as “Empire” and “Star,” it’s now been seven years since we’ve seen a feature film from Daniels.

Zac Efron will star in “Firestarter,” a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel.
The film centers on a young girl who develops pyrokinetic powers and the ability to see the future. She is abducted by a mysterious government agency that plans to weaponize her superhuman skills. The film is backed by Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Weed Road Productions.
Efron, who first came to fame in the rosy “High School Musical” franchise, has shown his darker side in certain projects, playing Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” This feels in that vein. Efron’s other credits include “Neighbors,” “The Greatest Showman” and “The Paperboy.” He will next be seen in a remake of “Three Men and a Baby,” which feels very far removed from all things Ted Bundy and Stephen King.

Corpus Christi (Jan Komasa)
This is exactly what director Jan Komasa and writer Mateusz Pacewicz do with their lead character Daniel (Bartosz Bielenia) in Corpus Christi. Based in part on real events, this twenty-year-old is about to be released from his detention center on parole. He’ll go to a reclusive town to work at a sawmill and maybe even build a decent life if he stays clean, but the potential he holds removed from the mark of “ex-con” is rendered moot. Despite finding God during his imprisonment and showing a desire to pursue the vocation, Polish law forbid former criminals from wearing the cloth. The one thing that...

And like that, the Venice Film Festival, and maybe auteur cinema itself, is back. Recovering from a global pandemic that has altered life as we know it, and will have enormous repercussions for the arts, watching The Human Voice felt like more than just catching a morning festival screening. The hush and anticipation across the cavernous Sala Darsena was palpable. Even clad in masks, looking like an audience of on-duty surgeons, for 30 minutes we were reminded of the potency of real cinema, and the continued vitality of Pedro Almodóvar.
Short work by great directors is customary at major festivals, but most often it underwhelms. Not here. Perhaps it’s because this is a project with special resonance for Almodóvar. The Human Voice, Jean Cocteau’s one-act, one-character monodrama has echoed across the Spanish great’s career. It’s directly referenced in Law of Desire and informs the plot of Women...
