A super had issues in collecting rent money from a tenant. When he came upstairs with back-up, they noticed an out loud music coming from the flat down the hall. The door is open and a man lied on the ground, stabbed to death. The victim is an Asian guy of Bangladeshi origin, the first likely graduate in his family. His former fiancèe (Suzie McGrath), a musician, hasn't seen him for a long time and had a strong alibi. Police seemed to be getting nowhere when Teddy find a book in the apartment just borrowed from the local library, but not in the victim's name. So it comes clear a girl spent time with him the day of the murder, but it's not so clear if she was willing to do it or if she was drugged and raped. It's up to police officers to figure it out. Of course, even if they were both born in England, the word of an innocent white girl counts a lot more than reports made by an Asian guy. Anyway she looks like a little naive.
Phillips is very attached to this investigation, having been raped in the past by a perp who now is walking free, so she's single- minded about finding the truth.
