Starting Out

This episode, for the most part, shows us the beginning of the First Ladies' roles as weak or strong figures, prior to entering the White house. Eleanor Roosevelt has attached herself to a progressive women's group, where she is learning independence and some complex issues with sexuality. Betty Ford already has coping issues and when she has some shoulder pain, she goes down the road of opioids. It is sad to see that doctor piling up the pills and telling her that alcohol and pills are no problem. We all know the demons she had in her life and this is well portrayed. Michelle Obama's character directs her efforts toward changing the way the poor are treated in hospitals and clinics. I'm still having trouble with her portrayal but I will see if the character is rounded out.

Episode 4 of season one's "Showtime" anthology "The First Lady" called "Cracked Pot" is one episode that shows the drama and inner turmoil that each first lady went thru while dealing with life, family, and before becoming first lady. We see Eleanor Roosevelt finding out that husband and New York governor Franklin has cheated on her and this prompts her to be more social and join and support political women's group. Michelle takes on the hospital system as she fights for the poor as she sees the indifference of the system after her daughter was treated well after an emergency situation. And last but not least Betty Ford(the super and great Michelle Pfeiffer) we see Betty as a congressional wife dealing with home life and kids and after suffering an injury she becomes attached to a strong cycle and addiction of alcohol and pain pills which has her spinning out of control and recalling painful flashbacks. Overall well done episode that shows the ups and downs and personal drama that each future first lady faced in their respective life.
