First, TravelTalks visits Saint John, New Brunswick. They visit the school attended by MGM founder Louis B. Mayer. This is how to suck up to the boss. Next they watch the tide reverse in the Bay of Fundy. They sail up the river to do a bit of fishing. That's a nice fish. There's a covered bridge. They arrive at the sleepy capital city of Fredericton. They visit the beach, but it's the off season. There are old fashion farming, giant lumber mills, and sardine fishery.

This is an unsexy, unexotic TravelTalks episode. There is a bit of brown-nosing to the boss. It's not necessarily great, but I do like the time capsule aspect. I really like the last section showing everyday working life. I'm always a sucker for old farming. The sardine fishermen puts this over the top. It's amazing to see them scooping up the wiggling sardines.

Glimpses of New Brunswick (1938)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Decent entry in James A FitzPatrick's TravelTalks series from MGM. This time out we go to the Canadian city where we see the school where Louis B. Mayer attended, the Hartland Bridge and perhaps the best part is a visit to a sardine work station. Once again, if you've seen one of these then you know what to expect and this one here is pretty much even with most of the others. It's really no better or worse but the one thing that did jump out at me was the perfect picture quality and how the rolling hills really jumped off the screen with the Technicolor greens. I also enjoyed the sardine section because I had never seen how something like this was done. Seeing how the river would flood and then the men would pretty much shovel the fish into boats was fairly interesting but then again, perhaps I'm easily entertained.

The Bay Of Fundy Et Al.

James A. Fitzpatrick sends the Technicolor cameras out to the Canadian province under the supervision of Winton Hoch, while back in the studio, Mr. Shilkret leads his orchestra in in doleful tunes while Fitzpatrick sings the praises of the place that schooled Louis B. Mayer, who signed the pay checks for all of them.

There's lots of pictures of water, from the Bay of Fundy to the St. Johns River, and the skies overcast with the end of summer. We also get treated to the world's largest sardine factory, if that's your idea of a good time.

The copy of this travelogue that plays on Turner Classic Movies is in excellent shape for the color elements, although the images are slightly variable in quality.
