This episode was the best one yet by a large margin. The show seemed to be struggling to find its footing with the first two episodes, a lot of it relying on nostalgia, but I guess its out of that. Like I can envision this show actually being good here on out. The next episode is Dirty Thirty so we all know that Sophie is turning 30 in the next episode. Quite excited to see it to be honest.
I thought that in this episode the most enjoyable bit would've definitely been Charlie and Ellen but they seem to barely have a presence in the episode. It's alright however because the other 2 plot lines are actually quite compelling.
Sophie-Jesse: You get insight into Sophie's life as a kid and Hilary Duff just gives it her all. Jesse is kind of lovelorn, like you can say that the role of Ted Mosby was split between Sophie and Jesse. Jesse is more pessimistic so it would be more accurate to actually compare him with like season 1 Ross Geller, but I don't think his character will be that big a disaster. Sophie trying to help Jesse is good fun and their whole "When you're ready" bit is rather compelling.
The Drew reveal is cool, but also predictable. So like as of now the father can be Jesse, Charlie, Ian, Sid, and Drew. I have to say however, that the problem with this premise is that none of their first conversations were even comparable to the conversation that Ted had with Tracy at the railway station. Like that conversation was so special because we waited 9 years for it to happen and when it happened like you knew how much it meant. So it's sad that this show will never be able to emulate that moment. However, that is just a problem with the entire show, not this particular episode.
Valentina-Sid. Now I did not like Valentina in the first two episodes. She was pretentious, annoying, and egoistic. But she's actually really likeable in this episode. I think it's because she does not have any Charlie drama whatsoever in this episode. She just helps Sid with his relationship problems and I have to say, she's a lot of fun. So she's improving. Sid is great and him trying to make things even better with Hannah is good. I'm excited to see how their relationship pans out.
Charlie-Ellen: Now from the get go I have enjoyed these two characters the most. They are definitely the most funny in the show and their stories can go in a lot of different interesting directions. This episode has them apartment hunting, but Ellen doesn't want Charlie as a roommate because he isn't a real new yorker. It makes sense I guess but she just finds a guy off of Craigslist and that's like....not good. Charlie's whole gold spoon thing is really funny. So their whole we will live together thing at the end of the episode is good because it gets me excited for the future episodes, it doesn't really add any impact or anything to this episode.
Overall, good episode.
I am excited to see how they will project themselves into pop culture. Like they will have this one episode which will make everybody lose their minds and everybody will be talking about it. Like How I Met Your Mother had, The Pineapple Incident. Now that episode is bafflingly brilliant. The narrative methodology as Ted pieces the remnants of last night together is legendary. The comedy is on point and not a single joke falls flat. It was the most viewed episode of HIMYM for a long time, right up until the finale. So, I'm excited to see what HIMYF's Pineapple Incident will be.
