How do Hollywood creators forge massive universes for their characters? For Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of “For All Mankind” and “Outlander,” it all began with the question: What if the Russians landed on the moon first? From this starting point, “For All Mankind” was born. Moore and his team explored their alternate timeline, weaving cultural, societal, and political shifts with historical events, crafting a rich universe for the Apple+ TV series.
Diving deeper into the intricacies of world-building for Variety’s Sony FYC Showcase, Moore was joined on the “Building a Television Universe” panel by “For All Mankind” co-showrunners and exec producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, as well as Maril Davis, who serves as an exec producer on both “For All Mankind” and “Outlander.” Also on the panel: “Justified: City Primeval” co-showrunners and exec producers Michael Dinner and Dave Andron, as well as Sony Pictures TV drama development exec VP Andrew Plotkin.

Were Justified Stars Not Speaking by End of Series? Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins Each Share POVs
Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder “dug coal together,” but by the end of Justified‘s six-season run, Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins weren’t exchanging many words together — to hear at least one of the actors tell it.
In Peter Biskind’s November 2023 book, Pandora’s Box How Guts, Guile, and Greed Upended TV, Goggins is quoted as saying that he and Olyphant “weren’t talking” by the end of Justified’s run.

South Australian Anthony Frith’s close encounter with “Sharknado” prodco The Asylum in “Mockbuster” is among five handpicked titles to be showcased at the Adelaide Film Festival Goes to Cannes showcase, held at Cannes Marché du Film on May 17.
The five works in progress range from queer adult anime, comedic doc, and traditional non-fiction to family dramas, helmed mostly by newcomers, and reflect the dynamic filmmaking community of Southern Australia, set to tempt potential co-financiers in Cannes.
So far two titles have received international backing. “Mockbuster” has been pre-sold to Giant Pictures and Drafthouse Films for North America, on top of domestic distribution in Australia via Umbrella Entertainment; Kelly Schilling’s drama “With or Without You,” handled locally by Icon Film Distribution, has been picked up by global sales agent LevelK.

Before making your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Series, take a tour of our photo gallery showcasing the leading contenders. Currently at the top of the heap is “The Crown,” which is looking to repeat its 2021 success in the category now that 2022-2023 winner “Succession” (which ended last May) is out of the race.
Of the eight shows that competed for this prize in 2023, only “The Crown” can do so this year. “Better Call Saul” joins “Succession” in having concluded during the 75th Emmys eligibility window, while ongoing series “Andor,” “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” and “Yellowjackets” will not return in time to qualify for the 76th annual honors.
“The Crown” is indeed the lone past nominee in the mix this time, although the list of hopefuls includes a reboot of 1990s nominee “Quantum Leap” and two spin-offs of 1960s contender “Star Trek,” subtitled “Strange New Worlds” and “Discovery.

This post contains spoilers for "Fallout" season 1, as well as "Justified" and "Justified: City Primeval."
If you watched "Fallout" this weekend and half-expected Deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens himself to stroll across the show's post-apocalyptic wasteland, you're not alone. Despite not actually sharing a casting director with the FX neo-Western "Justified," the first few episodes of the new Prime Video series feature not just one or two but four different actors who previously appeared on the Kentucky-set drama. That's a whole lot of Harlan for one video game adaptation.
Walton Goggins, who stars in "Fallout" as the actor-turned-undead gunslinger known primarily as the Ghoul, is the most obvious connection between the two shows. On "Justified" and its recent follow-up series "Justified: City Primeval," Goggins played smooth-talking man in black Boyd Crowder, who spent most of the original show's six seasons at odds with Timothy Olyphant's lawman. There may not be a more daunting artist from the twentieth century (and beyond) to grapple with in any form than Bob Dylan. The folk music legend is regarded by many as the most influential songwriter of the last 60-plus years, and, at the age of 82, is just as relevant today as he was in his rebellious young adulthood. He pricked the nation's conscience in the early 1960s with classic protest anthems like "The Times They Are a-Changin'," "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall," inspiring many a teenager and twentysomething to pick up an acoustic guitar and sing their truth. Then, in what his folkie colleagues/admirers took as a betrayal, he went electric. This would be the first of many confounding transformations. In a way, he kept throwing fans off the scent of the big "Who is Bob Dylan?" question by, every few years, getting...

FX’s John Landgraf’s annual tally of original series has revealed that there were 516 scripted titles on air in 2023, which was a 12% drop from 2022.
This marks the first reduction in scripted series in over a decade, since Landgraf and his team have been keeping score, outside of 2020’s Covid year.
It is notably down on the 600 shows that aired in 2022, which itself was a 7% rise from the year before.
Landgraf, speaking at TCA, joked that he was “finally correct” when it comes to peak TV. He said that it proves that even a broken watch is right twice day.

Ava DuVernay says that while “it’s been disappointing” her film Origin “hasn’t had the reach in the Hollywood community” during awards season, she is proud of the “overwhelmingly positive, overwhelmingly connected” response it’s garnered from those who have embraced it.
Starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood and more, the Neon film is produced, directed and written by DuVernay, based on Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. The film adapts Wilkerson’s analytical exploration of how caste can serve as a framework for understanding American racism — alongside the caste systems of India and Nazi Germany — into a biographical drama that has been called poignant, ambitious and possibly “the most important biopic of a book ever made.”

Exclusive: Angelina Jolie is getting into this year’s Oscar race.
As AMPAS voting enters its final days, the Academy Award winner today threw her support behind Ava DuVernay’s Origin in what looks to be doubling down by any other name.
First of all, Jolie held an invite-only get together at her home Sunday to around two dozen guests With DuVernay and Origin star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in attendance, Jolie spoke passionately about the film, sources say.
Multiple Emmy and Tony winner Debbie Allen and Frances Fisher (Actors branch) were there too. Old Guard 2 director Victoria Mahoney and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women helmer Angela Robinson (Directors branch) and Lost in Translation costume designer Nancy Steiner (Costume Designers branch) were also present, I’ve learned.
Sunday’s soiree is to be followed by a screening of Origin in West Hollywood tomorrow afternoon with Jolie moderating an on-stage panel with director/writer DuVernay and Ellis-Taylor.

Production is underway on “Kangaroo Island,” the feature film debut from Australian director Tim Piper and screenwriter Sally Gifford.
The family relationship drama-comedy centers around a struggling Hollywood actress forced to reunite with her sister as part of her father’s last wishes. It stars Rebecca Breeds, Erik Thomson, Adelaide Clemens and Joel Jackson.
Lou Wells (portrayed by Breeds) was set to become Hollywood’s next big thing – but a few years later, she’s hit rock bottom. Broke and aimless, she reluctantly accepts a ticket from her estranged father (Thomson), home to Kangaroo Island for a “family reunion.” When her father’s real agenda unfolds, years of tension resurface, and Lou struggles between continuing to run away from her past or working to repair the damage done.

Disney is rethinking all of its linear channels these days, and outright sales of ABC and other networks have also been discussed.
Disney’s evolution when it comes to its strategy surrounding its linear channels over the past year has been well-covered. Once the crown jewel of Disney’s entertainment segment, its TV networks are all losing viewers at an increasing rate, leading CEO Bob Iger to stunningly say over the summer that they might no longer be core parts of Disney's business.
A new report from the Wall Street Journal indicates networks like History Channel and Lifetime could be folded into A&e Networks. A&e Networks is Disney’s joint venture with Hearst Television, so moving these channels would help Disney cut costs. Disney may attempt to cut costs and take whatever other measures are necessary to keep the channels that contribute to its streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu in operation the longest.

Spoilers for Justified: City Primeval. Timothy Olyphant returned as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens for a new Justified series based on Elmore Leonard’s crime novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. While the story of Justified: City Primeval was largely self-contained, it did leave a pretty big door open for a possible season 2 featuring the return of a fan-favourite character.
In the closing moments of the Justified: City Primeval finale, we catch up with none other than Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), who is able to escape from prison after faking an illness and seducing a guard. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Justified: City Primeval showrunners Michael Dinner and Dave Andron were asked if this meant that a second season was in the works.

Thanks to Hulu’s 30-day free trial, you can binge all three seasons of ‘Only Murders’ and much more at no cost.
The writers’ strike is over, so TV is back, right? Not so fast, eager viewer. Late-night talk shows and similar programming might be back on the air, but with Hollywood’s biggest actors’ union on strike, it’ll still be quite some time before scripted TV makes a meaningful comeback to airwaves.
Until then, customers will have to rely on streaming libraries to fill in their programming gaps. Hulu has a fantastic way for new subscribers to do this: its 30 day free trial, which is one of the most generous available from any streaming service. Looking to stream the latest season of “Only Murders in the Building” with Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez and Meryl Streep? All episodes are now available, and thanks to Hulu’s 30-day...

There’s no way around it: rising prices stink. It seems the cost of just about everything is increasing these days, and streaming services are no exception. Disney is raising the price of each of its streaming services on Oct. 12, and Hulu + Live TV users will see the cost of their service increase from $69.99 per month to $76.99.
If you’re a cord cutter looking at live TV streaming and decided that price increase meant Hulu + Live TV wasn’t for you, you may want to reconsider. Between now and Oct. 11, new customers can sign up for Hulu + Live TV for three months for $49.99, a discount of 29% off the current $69.99 price. When the increase takes effect, users will be getting a 35% discount off the monthly subscription rate.

Price increases around the streaming industry may be necessary for executives trying to keep their shareholders and Wall Street happy, but for consumers, they remain a tolerable nuisance at best. Disney’s three streaming services Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ are all rising in price on Oct. 12, but the company does still offer plenty of ways to bundle those services and save money.
In fact, as of Sept. 6, there’s a new way to bundle Disney streamers, titled “Duo Premium.” It offers both Hulu and Disney+ without ads, at a price much less expensive than buying those two services separately. But how much will you save with this new option, and what are your other choices to stream Disney entertainment?

When "Justified: City Primeval" signed off last night, the limited series finale was expected to be the final word on Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). After all, fans of the straight-shooting, contemplative modern cowboy got six seasons with the character, plus a surprise bonus in the form of the revival series -- an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard story that didn't originally feature Raylan. And isn't that enough? Wouldn't it be greedy for us to ask for more time in this stylish, thrilling world?
Not according to the show itself. In an exhilarating surprise epilogue, "Justified: City Primeval" ended with a fantastic cliffhanger, bringing crime kingpin (and Raylan's ex-friend) Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) back into the fray in typical over-the-top fashion and putting an immediate question mark on the end of Raylan's early retirement. The final scene,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 8, “The Question” — the season, or series, finale.]
In the end, Timothy Olyphant’s scrupulous U.S. Marshal wants what every other beleaguered public servant wants at the end of a long, hard day: a good night’s sleep. That’s it. That’s all he asks. Yet whether it’s his conscience stirring him to action or the recurring call of duty blaring from his phone, Raylan Givens isn’t resting easy — not yet, anyway. The enduring assumption that one more case closed, one more bad man cuffed, or one more just act in an unjust world will allow him to hang up his hat for good lingers over the “Justified: City Primeval” finale, as well as its preceding episodes, in a way that suggests satisfaction is little more than a myth. Even when he’s not just doing it for himself (he’s doing it...

For nearly 36 minutes, FX's Justified: City Primeval finale, "The Question," lulls viewers into a false sense of security. After being picked up by the Albanian mob, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) walks away from the encounter unscathed thanks to a deal brokered by attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis). The Albanians promise to "take care" of Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), the ruthless criminal known as the "Oklahoma Wildman," but Clement slips through their fingers, setting up one last showdown between Raylan and the man he's been hunting for weeks.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of the August 29 series finale of Justified: City Primeval.
Timothy Olyphant’s return to the role of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval completed its eight-episode limited series run tonight on FX. Surviving the Oklahoma Wildman Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), Givens seemed headed to a proper retirement, hanging up his badge and gun for a quiet life in Miami. Just when he was finally out — a pensioner content to refurbish a Florida shack and dote on the daughter he neglected for years — with the promise of a relationship with lawyer Carolyn (Aunjanue Ellis)…up pops Boyd Crowder, the charming silver-tongued psychopath played by Walton Goggins. Crowder, who vexed Raylan on and off throughout the original series creation from the Elmore Leonard novels, has escaped with the help of a girlfriend posing as a guard who is supposed to escort him to...

This article contains spoilers for Justified: City Primeval.
When FX announced a new limited series featuring Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), fans of Justified were excited, but skeptical. The original run of Justified from 2010-2015 was some of the greatest television in recent memory, separating itself from the rest of the pack. Based on the works of Elmore Leonard, the series was equal parts country-fried charm and law-and-order procedural, where viewers could often find themselves cheering for the criminals as often as they did law enforcement.
Justified also ended as powerfully as it began, with arguably one of the most satisfying finales which not only sewed everything up, but was downright touching as well. Which means that new showrunners Dave Andron and Michael Dinner were playing with Kentucky fire – if Justified: City Primeval was a let down, it could ruin the hard work the original series put in for six years.

I admit that Justified: City Primeval Season 1 Episode 8 leaves me with some intense feelings.
Mostly, I feel incredibly cheated by a revival that promised to carve out a new path for Raylan Givens -- one where his sensibilities as a father would temper his quick trigger, shaping his renegade spirit into an inspiring leader.
Instead, Detroit breaks him. Then, all the ghosts of the past return. And does everything that happens in Detroit even matter at the end of the day?
Seriously. Are we meant to care about Robinson, Bryl, and Downey? Do the Detroit Pd deserve to have their resources tied up investigating Downey?
If she was Clement's mole in the department, there was Nothing in the script to even hint at a connection between the two. That's not good gotcha writing; that's bad plot planning.
Instead, I offer this interpretation.
Downey is in the book and is...

[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Justified: City Primeval, titled “The Question.”]
Wherever Raylan Givens goes, there must always be a Boyd.
For the vast majority of Justified: City Primeval, the Boyd in question was Boyd Holbrook, the actor who brings “Oklahoma Wildman” Clement Mansell to menacing life. Following the villain’s violent death in the series finale, City Primeval closed out by returning to the Boyd who started it all: Boyd Crowder, Raylan’s old friend turned foe — turned friend and foe and back again. Listen, it was complicated.
In the final sequence of the revival series, Walton Goggins reprises his celebrated Justified role, picking up many years after we last saw him but in more or less the same exact place: prison. Boyd tells his fellow inmates he’s facing terminal illness and is being transferred to another facility as a result. Of course, as often is the case with Boyd, it’s a con.
