The biggest talking point surrounding the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special is, of course, how it’s Peter Capaldi’s final hour, before he regenerates into Jodie Whittaker. But it’s worth remembering that the episode, titled “Twice Upon a Time,” is also the last one to be written by showrunner Steven Moffat, before he hands over the keys to the Tardis to new guy Chris Chibnall.
Moffat has helmed the show for the past seven years, casting and overseeing the whole eras of both Matt Smith and Capaldi’s Doctors. Though he’s also known for creating BBC’s Sherlock, he’s never been shy about showing his love for Doctor Who above all else. And, now that he’s leaving, he’s taken the time to give a touching speech about why he believes the sci-fi series is the best TV show ever made.

Some people like to spend the holidays with family, or shopping for the perfect present. More indoors-y types enjoy binge-watching classic Christmas movies. But for a Doctor Who fan, the perfect Christmas is gorging on as many episodes of the sci-fi series as humanly possible without the aid of a Tardis. Thankfully, BBC America have Whovians covered this yuletide.
Beginning Tuesday, December 19, the network will air a whopping 168 hour marathon showcasing adventures from the past three incarnations of the Doctor!
“BBC America will air a 7-day, 24-hour full takeover marathon featuring Doctor Who episodes with David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi.”
With that sort of time frame to cover, it’s likely that BBC America will simply play the entire run from David Tennant’s debut in 2005’s “The Christmas Invasion” all the way until 2017’s “The Doctor Falls,” the finale of the recent season 10, encompassing the full 109 episodes in between.

Matt Smith has some interesting casting ideas for when The Crown eventually brings Meghan Markle into the fold. The 35-year-old Netflix star currently plays Prince Philip on the popular drama about the British monarchy.
Smith and his co-star, Claire Foy, appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Thursday where a caller asked them who they wanted to play Markle on the screen.
“The thing is they’re so young, aren’t they? And they’re probably not going to be on the show for another five years, so we’re going to have to choose someone who’s about 11 or 12,” Foy, 33, who plays Queen Elizabeth, said.
But Smith had someone else in mind.
“Who’s that singer? The singer who…” he began.
“Ed Sheeran?” Cohen guessed, thinking Smith was casting the red headed royal, Prince Harry.
“No! The singer who goes out with Justin Timberlake, no, not Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber! Selena Gomez!” Smith...

The first clip from the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special has now arrived online, after debuting as part of the BBC’s Children in Need celebrations in the UK.
Titled “Twice Upon A Time,” the special will follow on from the season 10 finale, when a dying Twelfth Doctor encountered his first incarnation, who was similarly on the cusp of regeneration. In this episode, the two Time Lords will have to pair up to save time and gain an unlikely companion in the form of Mark Gatiss’ Captain, a soldier from the First World War.
The clip showcases an important moment from the episode, as it sees the First Doctor realizing that this crazy Scottish man with his own Tardis is actually a version of himself from the future. It also gives us another fun “it’s bigger on the inside” reaction to the vehicle from Gatiss’ character. Seeing as the...

The planned Terminator Genisys trilogy never got made, but we've tried to piece together what might have happened...
Not for the first time, Terminator Genisys was supposed to mark a bold new chapter in the series dreamed up by James Cameron back in 1984. Terminator Salvation, released in 2009, was Sony's glossy, $200m reboot, this time focusing on humanity's charge against the machines in the near future.
When that movie failed to perform as expected, the rights to the Terminator franchise went up for auction, and the result was Terminator Genisys: a new interpretation of the series from Skydance, the production company behind the rebooted Star Trek movies. In many respects, Skydance's treatment of The Terminator was markedly similar to its 2009 Star Trek movie: younger actors cast in familiar roles, at least one veteran from the original series returning to give an air of canonical legitimacy, and a...

In 1813, renowned writer Jane Austen published a book called Pride and Prejudice, which tells the story of the Bennet sisters, who are gussied up and married off to wealthy suitors, one by one. The only sister who seems to question this system is Elizabeth, the rebellious member of the family, who feels strong disdain for the system that treats her more like property than a proper citizen. In 2009, author Seth Grahame-Smith put a new twist on the old tale by creating a parody novel called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which loosely follows the same basic outline, but adds an entirely different obstacle to the tale: the living dead.
In Grahame-Smith’s story, the girls are not only fighting for the right to be married into regal families, but also battling for their lives on a daily basis. An outbreak has occurred within these humble streets, and now flesh-eating zombies...

The birth and evolution of the British games industry is perfectly captured in Britsoft: An Oral History. Ryan reviews a great book...
Pick a page, any page, and you'll find something funny, strange or informative. Ah, here we go: page 258, which talks about the time Palace Software hired glamour model Maria Whittaker to pose for the cover of its 1987 game, Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior.
"Steve made little breastplates out of ashtrays," recalls Palace Software's Richard Leinfellner, "which apparently kept pinging off for some reason."
It's an anecdote which aptly captures the 80s era of British software development: the wild, sometimes crazy marketing ideas and gimmicks, the hype, the great mountainous piles of cash for the lucky few, the financial disaster for the less fortunate. Britsoft: An Oral History, a two-inch-thick slab of a book, is a time capsule from a bygone era of innovation and eccentricity, as...

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.
Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials...

In The Wind Rises, Jiro (voice of Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni (voice of Stanley Tucci). Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. We know a lot of things about The Doctor, even as we still know so very little. We know he travels through time and space in a Police Box that’s bigger on the inside. We know he fights for justice wherever he lands. And we know he hates to travel alone. Throughout the vast majority of the series he forms the center of, he is accompanied by one or more people (known colloquially as “Companions”) who serve as audience surrogates, conversation partners, and, as often as not, a moral compass to ensure The Doctor doesn’t lose his way in the stars. In its first two seasons, Doctor Who wasn’t just learning how to be a TV show (a precarious process for all new series), it was also forming the building blocks for a legacy that now spans a half century and virtually every medium we have invented for communicating stories.

“A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting.” – The Doctor
If there was ever a Doctor that lived up to making things more interesting, it was the Third Doctor. Though David Tennant and Matt Smith may have stolen some of the thunder in more recent years, it was Jon Pertwee who first made the Doctor’s alien nature easier for the human race to comprehend.
After being forced to regenerate to a new form and exiled by his fellow Time Lords to primitive planet Earth, the Doctor took up a fancier and more sophisticated style. With Einstein-like gray locks, a fabulous velvet cape, and a modified yellow Edwardian Roadster the Third Doctor made being forced to stay on Earth look good. Jon Pertwee’s Doctor was always ready with a sarcastic quip and an outfit for every occasion.

Portlandia: Seasons 1&2

These caught the eye of Lorne Michaels, legendary producer of Saturday Night Live (a show Armisen has only just left the cast of). Then the hipster-baiting world of Portlandia opened for business,...

Hopefully you’ve already seen our Doctor Who post from earlier today with the very excellent new trailer and photos. Shortly after that post went live, BBC America released terrific movie-type posters for the first four episodes of the second half of the season, similar to what they did for the first half of the season, and a press release, synopses of those first four episodes, and interviews with showrunner Steven Moffat and stars Matt Smith, and Jenna-Louise Coleman.
The posters are gorgeous and not very spoilery, but the synopses are obviously a bit spoilery, as are the interviews. Skip them if you’re worried, study them if you’re not. Enjoy!
The Doctor kicks off this new run of adventures by searching for his companion Clara – an Impossible Girl he’s already lost twice. Together they find themselves battling monsters on distant alien planets, trapped in a Russian submarine with a deadly passenger,...

In honor of the Christmas season, the British time-traveling adventure series returns with a holiday treat. It’s a Christmas special filled with everything nice — snowmen, a mystery lady, and perhaps just a little bit of spice all wrapped up in a bright blue box. As we know, life with The Doctor is never dull and taking no exception this year, this year’s holiday adventure starts right off with another fun twist.
Still mourning the loss of his beloved companions, Amy and Rory, who had been transported somewhere in time by the nefarious Weeping Angels, The Doctor is not quite ready for another adventure. But time stands still for no man, including The Doctor. So when there is a damsel in distress, a big bad villain to conquer and another Christmas adventure to be had – all will prove too tempting even for the curmudgeonly Doctor.

The Comic-Con 2012 schedule has now been released in full, and barring any major updates, is set. The blessing and curse of being an attendee is deciding which panels/autograph sessions/special events to attend, when they conflict. And they always do.
For you to see for yourself, below are what we are calling the “headliner” panels; those panels that are taking place in Hall H, Ballroom 20, Room 6Bdf, and the just-next-door Hilton Indigo Ballroom, the four major venues for panels. There are descriptions of each panel as well as the show(s) and/or movie(s) they are there to discuss.
See how many conflicts you might have, or how you might arrange time and space to somehow attend these plus spend every day in the vendors’ Exhibit Hall and chasing zombies in the nearby The Walking Dead Escape. By the way, if you figure that out, Please let us know.

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. How do you put that much action down on...

“Doctor Who” fans, the premiere date for the Doctor’s return is drawing near. How will the season opener baptize Matt Smith as the Doctor? SciFiMafia has the summary and trailer for the season premiere of “Doctor Who” right here.
This is the first season of “Doctor Who” in which Steven Moffat takes over as showrunner and also the first season for Matt Smith to inherit the mantle of the Time Lord from the tenth Doctor, David Tennant. Karen Gillan plays the Doctor’s new companion, the “enigmatic” Amy Pond. Together, our new Doctor and companion will “explore sixteenth century Venice, France during the 1890s, and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space” and face familiar enemies like the Daleks and Weeping Angels and new baddies including “alien vampires, humanoid reptiles, and a silent menace that follows the Doctor and Amy wherever they go.

As I’ve said previously, I’m more a fan of Torchwood than I am of Doctor Who. But even though I may have felt that way in the past, I’m willing to give the new series, and the new Doctor (Matt Smith), a try — especially after viewing this brand new trailer for the series.
Seeing this trailer really helps persuade me to forget the problems I’ve had with the show in the past. In fact, after watching it I can only conclude that the show looks pretty darn good. I sincerely hope the trailer is a good indicator of the show itself. Either way, I’m going to give it a try so expect a review of the new Doctor Who series soon.
In the meantime, here’s some info about the show from our friends at the BBC:

Today the Bee-Bee-Cee has released the latest teaser trailer for the upcoming fifth series of Doctor Who. With a new Doctor (Matt Smith), new Companion (Karen Gillan), new graphics for the time vortex (see image on the right) and a new showrunner (Steven Moffat), the 2010 Doctor Who looks loads different from the David Tennant run (and not just because the two main stars in the new Who are in their twenties as opposed to old man Tennant in his *Gasp!* thirties!)
Anyway, it doesn't matter if the new Doctor is young, old or somewhere inbetween. It all comes down to whether the stories are compelling, if viewers are still interested and if the Doctor and his Companion have onscreen chemistry. So, do they?
Also breaking this weekend is a leaked press release that Radio Free Skaro has uncovered. It points to some of the places, times and planets that we'll...

Budget movie Together is competing for the critics choice award at the Cannes Film Festival this week, with new Doctor Who star Matt Smith in a lead role. Filmed for just £40,000, the production - which took a year to raise funds for and was part funded by the UK Film council - was only able to offer Smith minimum wage and expenses for the trip to Germany. Graduates Zorana Piggott and Eicke Bettinga co-wrote the film with Piggott producing and Bettinga directing. Piggott...

Germany seems to already be the winner for having the most coproductions represented in the Cannes Film Festival and its sidebars.
Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux has announced this year's selection for the Official Program. The Berlin production company X-Filme Creative Pool is pleased about the invitation to the Competition for The White Ribbon (Das Weisse Band) by the Munich-born director Michael Haneke (a German-Austrian-French-Italian coproduction). The film tells the story of a school and church choir led by the local teacher in a village in Germany's Protestant North on the eve of the First World War. Strange accidents occur and increasingly assume the character of ritual punishments.

- The section devoted to 1st and 2nd films is mostly going with newbies this year. With the exception of Altiplano starring (Olivier Gourmet) from director pairing of Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth (Khadak), in my opinion, the complete sidebar will be a like throwing a dart aimlessly and hoping to land on something worth your while. In the past couple of years they had Junebug, Me and you and everyone we know, Look Both Ways, Xxy, and my favorite film of the section in 2008 was Aida Begic's Snijep (Snow). This year they have stripped the section down, by perhaps five films less and there are no signs of the Fipresci "revelation of the year" pick - a one slot for a film the organization thinks deserves a second chance. This year, like previousyears they have films from a little bit everywhere - but this year they focused mostly
