Can't wait to find out what is next

Warning: Spoilers
This first episode did suck me back in, although without a recap of the previous season, I spent a lot of time while watching it also trying to remember all the details from season one. Now that I have it all straight, episode two really has me on the edge of my seat and I can't wait to find out where things are going.

Tom got away with all sorts of antics in the nineties, but his mistakes now are mounting. You know Izzy's slip to Birdie about Tom and Tori supposedly dating will be coming back. Plus she caught him cleaning his car. Also he got caught by Niamh holding Olivia's hand, even though he was honestly trying to comfort the "grieving widow." Then he really stepping in it by killing Dardis.

I don't agree at all that Dardis knew all along who Tom was. The question about the gold is what tipped him off, though perhaps the actor should have been allowed to have a slightly different reaction and taken at least a few more seconds to work it out. Will Tom's mistakes keep happening? What is his plan for the false narrative he is creating to throw his team off the scent? Why is he antagonizing Jackie so openly? Is it his hubris or is it part of the plan?

The one thing I hope they answer is why did Tom tell Colin where he'd hidden the gold all those years ago? It seems very out of character. Why hire an accountant, tell him only his code name and that he was a scary assassin with hidden IRA gold, and then give the specifics of his hiding spot? Was it just more hubris? I hope it's not going to end up as a plot hole. I'm also not sure why Colin would ever need to write down that clue in his ledger that particular way when he had other units as well just next to it. It seems a little convenient.

I will say I'm not always a big Victoria Smurfitt fan but I really loved how she played the final scene when she showed up all in red. She was so good letting Olivia's mask fall and let loose her evil, manipulative side. That scene may have sold the whole season. It feels like a turning point and that the game is finally on.

Hard to believe events, but watchable.

Tom interviews Olivia, making it clear what he's after, and he meets up with Robert Dardis, and agrees to take him to a place of safety.

Good scenes between Tom and Olivia, there is no denying that both Nesbitt and Smurfit are excellent actors, the interview scene in particular was so tense, almost as if words weren't needed.

However, all sense of reality departed about half an hour in, I know it's a TV drama, but Tom got away quite literally with murder in series one, that was hard enough to swallow, and here he's up to his antics again, I just question whether or not a drama like this should be operating within the bounds of reality.

Visually stunning once again, it's an immaculate production, my only issue is that it's more in the realms of fantasy drama than crime fiction.

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad viewing, it's just too over the top, 5/10.

Episode 2

Warning: Spoilers
The second episode once again has DCI Tom Brannick shooting people dead and covering up his tracks.

His colleagues and superiors not noticing that he might be a very dodgy copper.

In Brannick's sights in this episode is ex soldier Robert Dardis. He is linked with the dead accountant's widow Olivia Foyle.

Brannick suspects that Dardis killed the accountant, has a romantic thing going on with Olivia. Both might have been involved in killing Colin Foyle.

It is a case of how much Dardis knows about the gold.

Brannick orchestrates an injured Dardis walking free from a messed up police interrogation. Petrol bombing his shed so Dardis is moved to a safe house so Brannick can gt a crack as Dardis in the not so safe, safe house.

To his surprise Dardis reveals that he knows Brannick is Goliath. I would have like to have known how he came to that conclusion when Brannicks bosses cannot make the same leap.

Victoria Smurfit does well in the femme fatale role. Olivia Foyle trying to lure Brannick into a deal.

The plot so far smacks of implausibility just like it did in the first series.
