Boom Crash Opera
jswsdmmt6 August 2023
Slant is a fast-paced dramatic black comedy with audience appeal throughout. The film moved the audience from laughing out loud to gasping with surprise and horror. An emotional roller coaster of a story that twisted and turned its way through the trials of a dysfunctional family. An emotional story, painfully yet unbearably funny. Based in the 80's in Melbourne, the setting was realistic and relatable. The story, art direction and cast can be proud of their hard work and commitment to the Australian film industry. Congratulations and applause to the creative and talented team that gave us a very entertaining night out.

Entertaining and unpredictable

Never sure what i was watching. A quircky drama comedy suspense even some horror elements. Lady behind us was laughing at a pool of blood. So i guess its a comedy for some. Excellent musical score and performances from some iconic Australian actors and next generation of new talent. If this film doesnt achieve broad main stream release it will be a shame for Australian cinema. If not it should become a cult classic. I expect the discussion moving forward will be the interpretation of the film. In the theatre the audience was involved in an animated discussion on different theories on potential guilty parties. Definite potential for a sequel as there is scope to explore multiple plots in the future.

Quirky Nostalgic Mystery Fun
horatiothecat-6792519 October 2023
A wonderful gem set in the 90s Great nostalgia it starts with a mystery and the journalists competing for the best story then the dark family secrets that intertwine with the investigation, All the cast are wonderful especially the main character Derek you feel lots of emotions for him but I won't give too much away, it's funny frustrating sad and quirky.

I feel like there is more to this story as it leaves so many questions, I would love to see a sequel or to be made into a TV series would be great, I encourage you to go see it and draw your own conclusions, I think the director and main actor have a promising future ahead of them.

QUIRKY UNIQUE FUN FILM - NOT FOR EVERYONE
movieguy300014 October 2023
This is a dark comedy that is quite original and unique.

The story is a little off kilter and hard to follow due to it being too complex, erratic, and convoluted.

But there is hope for this, it has a brilliant cast of great actors especially Sigrid Thornton who is a force in this film with a great ensemble witty cast like Pia Miranda. There are brilliant locations, production design, grading, hair and makeup (except the fake beard at the end) and really good music score.

This film is very ambitious with some great dialogue, and many genres in a mixed bag, drama, comedy, murder-mystery-esque film.

If you want something different to watch - Check this out I feel this will possibly be nominated or sweep the AACTA AWARDS - You heard it here first - 15th October 2023.

Overall great execution of a so-so storyline and great overall direction.

Move over Tarantino!
motherofquincy15 August 2023
A bold, gripping, darkly comedic film that captures a wonderful spectrum of humanity that is relatable on some levels, and weirdly whacky in its dissection of a dysfunctional family.

I love the detailed 90s references, the richness of the characters (their blind ambitions, their private hopes, their bizarre dreams, their sordid secrets), and unpredictable plot twists when least expected. Sometimes we find meanings and depths in a film that mirrors an aspect of who we are, also stumbling through life to find our grander selves.

This is a well produced independent Australian film that should be screened in all Cinemas to highlight the incredible talents in Australia.

Unfunny comedy
philhayes804 April 2024
Hate how you have to give this over 600 words.. It doesn't even deserve 600 words..

The amount of good things I heard about this and how it was so hyped up during the festivals and even on instagram and how it took the festivals "by storm" who did actually enjoy it? Because I know it wasn't me, that is for sure.

It needs the speed up feature to be watched because it is so slow in places and so over the top.

The only decent actor in this is Sigrid Thornton and then she is too over the top for this, her monologue during one scene was the only good part of this, someone please apologise to Sigird.

You can skip this one, find something a bit more fast paced or with a speed up option.

Memorable for all the wrong reasons
cat_tac226 August 2023
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It was poorly acted, the storyline started off weak and got progressively worse, and it wasn't even funny. It was the kind of standard you'd expect if highschool amateurs had written and produced a movie. Unsure how they roped Sigrid Thornton and other reputable actors into this, but they couldn't save it. Most of the characters were unlikeable and ridiculous. Other reviewers are running with a 'cult Australian movie' angle to try and make this sound watchable, and it's worth a watch just to see how bad it is. The low budget really shines through. Perhaps if the synopsis has mentioned that the movie was a tongue in cheek or ironic approach to film making then I would have better prepared, but I was expecting a well made and well acted movie.

suspenseful, unpredictable, funny and left you thinking
eddieeagle-6615516 October 2023
Watched this in Radelaide and loved the many twists and turns. Nostalgic Nokia mobiles and cars and my wife and I we left discussing this movie afterwards and the next day. Elements of pulp fiction type dark comedy for sure left me laughing out aloud in the cinema. Well acted by all the cast members and the timeshifts in the movie were well integrated. Highly recommended for an Aussie movie and we would encourage anyone to watch this as it is really up there with anything international film makers can produce. Sigrid Thornton played her character really well along with the remaining cast......

Previous reviews must be from people associated with Slant

I must have missed something. This film was nothing like any of the reviews stated was in no way 8.2. Even if you take it as a slap stick comedy rather than a thriller. It is still horrendous. I paid for this! Thinking it was going to be a nostalgia fest from the 90's abit of a thriller. Something different. However. How wrong was I.

Clearly they're onto something luring people into the film with false reviews etc if everyone does like me and actually pays to watch it.what a fool.

The best part of was the burger phone. That took me back to my youth. Calling friends after school even though I'd spent 8 hours with them 😂

Something a bit different
bevtodd6 August 2023
Was fortunate enough to attend a screening at Luna Perth of Slant which was followed by an interaction with various members of the cast/crew. After listening to audience questions and replies given, would really like to watch it again to see from the different points of view given, as it is open to interpretation. Someone in the audience likened it to a Tarantino type of movie, which that in itself is a huge wrap.

It was a mixed bag of murders, crazy people, family loyalty as well as humour.

A couple of times i jumped with fright and the next I was laughing.

The cast were amazing with Sigrid leading a group of up and coming Australian talent who did an exceptional job. Considering the film was done on a small budget, the film did not seem to lack from impact or locations used.

Would definitely recommend if you like something that is not cookie cutter.

Australia's Pulp Fiction
staceybolton-792535 August 2023
What an amazing movie. It has just the right mix of comedy, drama, gore and heart. The slow reveal of two dysfunctional families colliding and imploding on multiple levels ensures the audience is consistently engaged and slightly off-kilter - making it a real roller coaster of a film.

We attended the Darwin premiere at the Deckchair Cinema and were lucky enough to have a Q&A after the movie with the writer, director, producer & Sigurd Thornton. They shared how collaborating and respecting everyone's ideas made the movie the success that it is.

It is truly impressive what a young independent team of filmmakers can do when they set their minds to it.

Such a fun romp
verucasfault30 July 2023
There's so much to love here! Firstly the creative team clearly knows their cast strengths and plays I to them delightfully. I could watch Sigrid read dramatic heartfelt monologues for hours on end.

Secondly I was Almost shocked when the movie ended and there were only two songs used apart from the original scores which is such a testament that it never felt stale or lacking (the two songs used were such bops!) Despite a smaller budget movie it never feels like they settled for less in the quality they produced like some low budget films you see littered on streaming platforms. This is a film many different film fans could enjoy.

It has a fun quirky mystery akin to knives out series with a campy horror film vibe and just a touch of touch of family drama just bloody enough yet not so gory that I couldn't easily recommend.

It is clear this was a labour of love and not made merely to make a movie.

Original Aussie Film
dboakes4 October 2023
Saw this at the London Australian Film Festival. Such a good story, acting and style. The writing and directing was so original.

Seeing Sigrid Thornton on the big screen was a treat. She should be working in Hollywood! She played the role so well. Hopefully she will win awards for this role.

All the leads are excellent and their is not one bad performance. For a low budget film the casting and acting is brilliant.

You are in for a rollercoaster of a ride. The story takes on many turns and twists you will not expect.

Can not recommend enough seeing this film in a cinema on a big screen. Do yourself a favour and support Aussie cinema.

Unpredictable and suspenseful
gjanderson-582245 October 2023
Absolutely loved this! Kept the entire audience highly engaged and waiting for the next scene.

An Aussie film that was clearly directed in a way to keep you thinking long after the film had finished. Some incredible twists and turns and encouraged to make you play connect the dots.

The casting of actors was absolutely on point. Costume design absolutely nailed the 90's era, without taking it too over the top.

Didn't realise the writer was the main Actor, he did an incredible job playing his part in the film.

Highly recommend checking this film out! It's so important to support our Australian film industry.

Wonderfully weird
klmyevent6 November 2023
A "who done it" story set in the late 90s injected with an Aussie backdrop, surreal undertones, a young oddball cast and perfectly structured almost offensive and nonsensical humour. Sigrid Thornton a magnetic beacon, effortlessly portraying the disturbed matriarch. Michael Nikou, an impressive newcomer embodying the spirit of Jim Carey with the tenacity of Tom Hardy. Heavy nostalgia feels present and greatly attributed to the film's score, unearthed soundtrack and set design. The special effects took me by surprise too, producing a healthy pay off and one of the integral factors to my 10/10 rating. This flick is a vibe. I want a Slant 2.
