Two's company.....three's murder.
Sleepin_Dragon20 August 2023
Arthur Goslett passed himself off as a Captain, using the deception to take advantage of women, including Ethel Baker, whom he promised to marry, the problem, he was already married. Goslett welcomes a pregnant Daisy Holt into his house, the trouble is, she was another former lover.

The start of the fifth and final series, such a shame it came to an end here, there were so many more stories that could have been told.

This is a fascinating study, Goslett truly was a cad of the worst order, he simply couldn't help himself, he caused a lot of misery.

The main question, what and who caused the act of murder, it's an interesting one to ponder, not too sure who I believed.

Very, very well acted, the cast did a great job bringing this story to life, the usual wonderful production values are on show, this was exceptionally well made.

Definitely an interesting notion, to think of women outnumbering men after The Great War, and I'm pretty sure that several men took full advantage of the situation they found themselves in.

A strong cast here, including Ellie Haddington, Samantha Bond and Rob Edwards, all are very good.

Such a shame this has never had a commercial release.

8/10.

The Great Romancer

Edward Woodward introduces this cautionary tale of how World War One left Britain with more women than men.

An atmosphere where a conman like Arthur Goslett could flourish. The South African born Godfrey was a crook and suspected of being a German spy. He was also a serial bigamist.

He married Evelyn Mear in 2014 and joined the Royal Navy but his true allegiance was questioned by his superiors.

In 1919 he married Daisy Holt and was pregnant with his child. With his finances strained, Daisy moved in with Evelyn at the family home as a lodger. She was passed of as the widow of Goslett's sister. Soon Evelyn learned the truth about Daisy.

Although Evelyn tried to throw Daisy out of the house. They still resided in uneasy circumstances. That is until Goslett murdered Evelyn in 1920.

When questioned by the police, Goslett stated Daisy persuaded him to kill Evelyn. By this time another woman also came forward claiming to be his wife.

The jury did not believe the story of a serial liar.

In the end there was nothing much suspicious about this story. Almost an open and shut case involving a scamp.
