Really enjoying this so far. I'm glad I took a chance on it. I like that it fits in the middle between a light hearted mystery like Murder She Wrote or Castle and something as slow and gloomy as Wallander. I also like that not ever my single episode involves a murder. With constant killings, Whitstable would turn into Cabot Cove with its high body count.
One negative is that it does still fall into the detective show trope at times though where the unarmed, usually not physically intimidating sleuth constantly runs to confront the criminal without any backup or even telling anyone where they are going, which can be frustrating. However, a big plus is that they went right to creating a romance between Mike and Pearl. I'm completely over shows that draw out the unresolved sexual tension in ridiculous ways for 5-7 years. The healthy, loving family dynamics with three generations running the restaurant, including the addition of Ruby, the small town where everyone knows everyone, and the scenery are all positives as well. I don't know if I want to start season 2 right away just so I can make it last a bit longer. Not sure if there will be a season 3 as of today.
After this episode, I'm guessing now that Kerry Godliman is playing someone 8-10 years younger than her actual age? (Good for her if true!) Because if she was still a young girl when her father died 30 years earlier, that would make the most sense. And it explains how people comment on how young she was when she got pregnant. It would also make the age gap between her and Frances Barber's Dolly not be so small.
I'm glad we got some much background on the family filled in with this finale. And we got a payoff about the time Mike ripped up that photo in the pub. Also we got a hint about how recently Mike's wife died because I've been curious about that story. Hopefully it's answered in season 2. I'm really glad I found this show and will definitely recommend it to people.
