Whitstable Oysters
DoctorStrabismus18 October 2022
An excellent start to a new series, the kind of quality production which it seems only Britain can make. It is in the same genre as Shakespeare and Hathaway, Queens of Mystery, McDonald and Dodds, and even the exotically-set Death in Paradise, where we see a mystery, usually involving murder, in a setting away from the big cities, without anyone prowling around pointing guns, anybody shrieking "Oh my gaaahhd", and absolutely zero awful 'special effects'.

For the viewer, this provides good entertainment rather than scariness, with plots that present sufficient challenge to the mind.

The central characters are very well-drawn, the script was good, and I fail to fathom what the reviewer who complained about the language was on about. That person must have been listening to a totally different sound track!

Finally, where better than Whitstable? My wife is a Kent girl, and although we live in Australia, we have visited Whitstable twice, and massively enjoyed the wonderful oysters. So the scenes were delightfully familiar, although as just a quiet whisper, I have to say that Hobart oysters do have an edge over the Kentish ones. Maybe it's the cleaner water.

Well done - 8/10.

A truly fine start.

Restaurant owner and Private Detective Pearl Nolan prepares for her son to go away to university, however she discovers a dead body, alerting the attentions of DI McGuire, who doesn't believe her story, days later, Pearl finds another body.

I think this is a winner, one of the reasons I've signed up for Acorn TV, if there are more like this, I'll be well happy.

A very good start, what more could you ask, good storyline, good characters and a dramatic ending, this ticked the boxes for me. I was expecting something light, along the lines of Father Brown or Marlowe murders, it's altogether more mature.

We learn so much about Pearl just from this one episode, not a surprise learning her past, she certainly schooled McGuire in terms of observational Police work.

How long before Pearl and McGuire end up as a unit, either professionally or romantically, it's coming.

Whitstable looks rather nice, I imagine this their tourism numbers some good.

Hard to fault.

8/10.

The Free Waters

Set in Whitstable in Kent.

Pearl Nolan runs a family restaurant and also has a investigative agency as a sideline. She once trained to be a copper before having a family got in the way.

Pearl's sleuthing skills come into good use in the opening episode. She finds a dead body in the anchor of a boat. Luckily for investigating officer DCI Mike McGuire. Pearl knew the victim and some of his secrets.

DCI McGuire who is from London and hates the countryside, initially suspects Pearl as she found the body. He later thinks she might be bad luck as Pearl finds another dead body a few days later.

There is a sense of charmlessness about McGuire something he shares with characters from another Acorn TV crime drama, London Kills.

It sort of works against the show. The first episode was bland and not very dynamic. Maybe it lacks humour and an interesting central character.

Nothing different

This could have been great, but the unnecessary bad/sexual language and unpleasant detective meant the show didn't really work for our multi-generational household.
