With two major sci-fi sequels debuting this week to lead the VOD and Netflix charts, the new films also inspired victory laps for the Part Ones of “Dune” and “Rebel Moon.”
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) leads at both iTunes and Fandango, and Netflix’s original “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” is #1 at the streamer. iTunes packaged the 2021 “Dune: Part One” with its sequel as a $34.99 purchase, and it ranks second there. (“Dune: Part Two” alone rents for 48 hours for $24.99.) “Rebel Moon — Part One” returned at #7 on Netflix’s top 10.
Three other recent theatrical releases also transitioned to home viewing, with curiously different pricing and availability strategies. The top grosser is Neon’s “Immaculate” (approaching $16 million), but it rents for the lowest price: $9.99. “Late Night with the Devil” (IFC) is $14.99, but for that price consumers own it. “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” (Goldwyn) with Liam Neeson is a standard $19.99 rental.

Not long ago, Lizzie No had an out-of-body experience while listening to Gillian Welch. The singer-songwriter had spent the past few years trying to make sense of the fractured, frighteningly personal songs she’d been writing, songs that spoke to a pain whose source she couldn’t always name. Many of them ended up on Halfsies, the stunning new record that the songwriter says is, in large part, about the “sensation of living in the scar without having any understanding of the initial wound.”

Jonathan Swift published his popular fantasy-cum-political-satire "Gulliver's Travels" -- a.k.a. "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships" -- in 1726. Gulliver, in traveling to faraway and bizarre lands, finds several countries and kingdoms whose entire societies are focused on trivial matters, often to the point of ruination. In Lilliput, the citizens are six-inch-tall royals, and the country has split into factions over which side of the egg is more appropriate for cracking. Gulliver also visits the giant country of Brobdingnag, the floating island of Laputa, and several other fantastical places. To this day, Swift's novel is a provocative and pointed read, poking fun at governmental idiocy in general, and foolish obsessives in particular.
Rob Letterman's 2010 film adaptation of "Gulliver's Travels" is ... not provocative. In fact, it's downright dumb. The 2010 film...

With a title like Nightmare on 34th Street, I was initially hoping for a horror take on the classic Christmas story Miracle on 34th Street but I soon realised this wasn’t the case as this started shaping up as a horror anthology. But that’s okay. A horror anthology with some loose connections on that story could be pretty good too. But this wasn’t the case either. They’ve just chucked that kind of Christmas-sounding title on this Christmas horror anthology.
After the initial disappointment, I was ready to enjoy the movie though. Horror anthologies are a subgenre I generally enjoy but Nightmare on 34th Street is, at best, a mixed bag.
Initially, what turned out to be my favourite segment I didn’t actually like at first because...

The Devil on Trial Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: David Glatzel, Debbie Glatzel, Carlo Adamo, Hannah Mae Beatty
Director: Christopher Holt
Original Language: English
Genre: Crime, Documentary, Horror
The Devil on Trial Movie Review Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: The documentary illuminates the nuances of the “Devil Made Me Do It” case by offering a comprehensive exploration, featuring diverse viewpoints from pivotal figures such as Johnson, his family, and legal representatives. Through a meticulous depiction of events, the film provides valuable insights into the intricacies of the trial.
What’s Bad: While the documentary attempts to present a credible account, it falls short of maintaining journalistic integrity. The authenticity of the evidence, particularly the processed photographs and enhanced audio recordings, is questionable. The film leans heavily on horror tropes and sensationalism, prioritizing shock value over intellectual engagement and nuanced exploration of the case.

But there are also some interesting new projects lined up between those two biggies. On September 15, Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in what is sure to be a delicious tale of revenge. Wilderness, based on B.E. If there’s one sin in criticism that many writers––myself included––fall victim to at one point or another, it’s assessing a film’s narrative by comparing it to the one they wish they saw. Our Father, The Devil, the directorial debut of Cameroonian filmmaker Ellie Foumbi, is the kind of intriguing but flawed effort that may leave some viewers wishing to sand down its rougher edges, especially as its initial slow-burning character study transforms into a moodier, altogether more conventional kidnapping thriller. A surprise nominee for Best Feature at last year’s Indie Spirit Awards, not least because it remained almost entirely under the radar within the festival circuit, it is an effective calling card for Foumbi, showcasing a talented new filmmaker equally at home making a restrained drama as she is a splashy, violent genre effort.

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title.
Stephen King’s short takes place in a psychiatrist’s office and sees Dr. Harper engaged with patient Lester Billings in a haunting session that unpacks the mysterious deaths of Lester’s three children. Feature film The Boogeyman uses the short story as the inciting event that brings the malevolent entity that plagued Billings’ home into Dr. Harper’s.
In the film, Chris Messina (Birds of Prey, Devil) assumes the role of Dr. Will Harper, a psychiatrist struggling to help his family through their collective grief, when Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) arrives at his home office for aid. This pivotal introductory scene establishes Will Harper, the lore, and its ties to King’s source material.

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.
Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:
The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. The murder of teenager Hae Min Lee was the focal point of a “Serial” podcast, which questioned if boyfriend Syed was her killer. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.
Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

Updated with new title of documentary Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg: Were it not for a chance encounter with the Rolling Stones in 1965, we might remember Anita Pallenberg as an exceptional actress and stunning model. Instead, her life was to be defined largely in relation to her ties with the “greatest rock n’ roll band in the world.”
In the documentary Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg, which premiered earlier this week at the Cannes Film Festival (under the abbreviated title Anita), the radiant and compelling Pallenberg finally gets her due as a creative force in her own right, a woman of alluring beauty, intelligence, dysfunction, addiction, and yes, an important figure in the world of the Stones at their apex.

A perfect way to plan a trip to Thailand — the country where Mike White plans to film season three of The White Lotus — is to combine beachy adventures (such as Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley once had at the Amanpuri resort on Phuket) with a journey to the mountainous north and a stint in the epicurean capital of Bangkok.
“One of the absolute highlights of my tour around the globe with Peacock’s travel docuseries Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss were some epic adventures in Thailand, the jewel of Southeast Asia,” Rainn Wilson tells THR. “This peaceful culture made up of so many united tribes has at its center the concept of sanuk, a spiritual/cultural concept of finding a loving, fun-filled pleasure in whatever you are doing.”
For sand and surf there are countless possibilities in a country with seemingly infinite coast, not to mention many islands.

After two installments that served as prequels to the Patrick Wilson/Rose Bryne haunted house chillers, “Insidious: The Red Door” takes the underdog horror franchise back to the present.
It’s been 10 years (in real-time and movie time) since the events of “Insidious: Chapter Two,” and the college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must help his father (Patrick Wilson) return to the “Further” to put an end to their supernatural perils once and for all.
Wilson makes his directorial debut with the horror feature. It’s the first of the franchise since “Insidious: The Final Key” earned $67 million domestically and $167 million worldwide on a $10 million budget in 2018. Scott Teems wrote the script based on a story by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell.

Louis Leterrier will return to direct the next installment in the “Fast & Furious” finale. The film will serve as a companion to the highly anticipated “Fast X,” Universal Pictures announced on Wednesday.
Leterrier, best known for directing “The Incredible Hulk” and “Transporter” films, replaced Justin Lin during production on “Fast X.”
“Louis joined the ‘Fast & Furious’ team seamlessly, with an innate understanding of the franchise that is stronger than ever after two decades. Under his direction, ‘Fast X’ is a high intensity thriller with all the spectacular action, emotion, and twists that the fans have come to expect – and then some,” Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer said in a statement. “We are thrilled that he will continue to work his magic in the director’s chair.”

Animal rights organization PETA has criticized Prime Video‘s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power after a horse died on the set of the fantasy television series. Amazon Studios confirmed on Sunday (March 26) morning that a horse suffered a cardiac arrest on March 21 before rehearsals. “The incident took place in the morning whilst the horse was being exercised prior to rehearsals,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “The trainer was not in costume and filming had yet to commence. Both a veterinarian and a representative of the American Humane Association were present at the time. The independent necropsy has confirmed that the horse died of cardiac failure.” According to Deadline, more than 30 horses were being used on the show that day. The animals were supplied by The Devil’s Horsemen, a family-run company that has provided horses and carriages for the film and TV industry for over 50 years, including...

Rlje Films, a unit of AMC Networks, has picked up the North American rights to Sympathy for the Devil, a psychological thriller staring Nicolas Cage and Joel Kinnaman.
Also included in the deal were rights to U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The deal marks the eighth time the company is releasing a Cage movie.
Rjle has set a July 28, 2023, release date for the film, which is directed by Yuval Adler (Bethlehem, The Operative).
According to the announcement, the story is set in motion after a man is forced at gunpoint to drive a mysterious passenger. He finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse in which it becomes clear that not everything is at it seems. Luke Paradise wrote the script.
“This is our eighth collaboration with Nicolas Cage, which includes Mandy, a critically acclaimed film that has a huge cult following,” said Rlje Film chief acquisitions officer Mark Ward.

From Freddy Krueger to Annie Wilkes, iconic villains with memorable backstories are a hallmark of popular horror media, but there’s more than one way to terrify audiences. For example, some horror flicks task viewers with unmasking the mysterious antagonist alongside our main characters in scare-centric whodunit mashups.
And with the continued success of the Scream franchise proving that audiences are hungry for more mystery alongside the traditional blood and guts, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six lesser-known whodunit horror flicks for your viewing pleasure.
Since this list is meant to highlight underseen scary movies, we won’t be including more popular whodunits like the original Friday the 13th, Happy Death Day or any of the aforementioned Scream films. However, feel free to comment below with your own favorite whodunit horror flicks if you think we missed a particularly underrated one.

“A Man Called Otto” (Sony/$14.99) was a flop as an adult-appeal awards contender, but it came out on top of VOD charts the week before the Oscars. Challenging its dominance is a strong performance by “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” (Crunchyroll/$9.99), which took #1 at Google Play while “Otto” led at Vudu and iTunes.
Netflix has an eye-popping nine theatrical releases on its top 10, including six studio sequels. Among those are four separate “Hunger Games” franchise entries, despite those films spending years in constant basic-cable rotation.
Neither “Otto” nor “Dragon” spent much time at a premium price. Sony quickly dropped the price of “Otto” from its initial $19.99. “Dragon,” from the Sony-owned Japanese anime label Crunchyroll, was introduced as a $9.99 purchase. It opened in U.S. theaters last August, the same week that “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village” opened to over $10 million.

The devil was in the details, apparently: Hulu has decided not to move ahead with The Devil in the White City.
The long-gestating limited series was to tell the story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the fair’s shadow.

Devil in the White City is officially dead at Hulu.
Sources say the Disney-backed streamer is no longer moving forward with the limited series that had been in various stages of development for more than a decade. However, sources say producers ABC Signature remains committed to the drama and will be shopping the show to new outlets.
The news comes months after leading man Keanu Reeves and director Todd Field (Tár) dropped out of the drama from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Sources say Hulu and Paramount Television Studios and Disney’s ABC Signature, who together were on board to produce the series, had been in talks with The Bear star Jeremy Allen White and Jude Law and director Matt Ross for the project. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" almost worked as a phantom wave for the neo-slasher genre, hitting theaters in the wake of Wes Craven's game changer "Scream," and sneaking in just a couple of months before "Scream 2" in October of 1997. Spawning an inferior sequel, a third entry called "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" with an entirely new cast, and a recently canceled Prime Video series, the original film has stayed surprisingly relevant. Now, a legacy sequel is on the way with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to return. Once again, the "Last Summer" franchise is capitalizing on the resurgent success of the "Scream" series, giving genre fans even more reason to get a little nostalgic for the late '90s horror craze.

Melinda Dillon, who was nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and Sydney Pollack’s “Absence of Malice,” has died at age 83, her family said in a public obituary.
She died on Jan. 9, but the obituary gave no cause of death.
Dillon memorably played single mother Jillian Guiler, whose son Barry (Cary Guffey), is abducted by aliens in “Close Encounters.” Like Richard Dreyfuss’s lead character, she also becomes obsessed with Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and both their quests lead them there. After running the gauntlet of military obstacles, they are the only two civilians who witness the alien ship landing in the film’s emotional finale.

We've all had those "Sliding Doors" moments where we wonder what our lives might be like if something went differently. Usually, they come in the form of major life decisions -- promotions, relationships, time spent with loved ones -- but sometimes they're in the form of movies that got away. Reader, I'm having a real "Sliding Doors" moment right now, because I suddenly, desperately need to live in a world where Universal made a "Bruce Almighty" sequel about the devil called, of all things, "Brucifer."
"Bruce Almighty" screenwriters Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe, who co-wrote the film's script with Steve Oedekerk, recently spoke to SyFy Wire about the 2003 comedy in which Jim Carrey gains the power of God from Morgan Freeman's wise, white-clad deity. During the conversation, they opened up about an ultimately scrapped third film that would've seen TV reporter Bruce (Carrey) headed in, well, a different direction.

Now This is "Chainsaw Man!" The first three episodes were great, but they felt more like appetizers meant to give us a taste of the different elements that make up the show. This week we get our first actual meal, mixing stunning action, great moments of juvenile humor, exquisite animation, and a lot of heart. The result is absolutely delicious.
"Rescue" begins with a flashback showing Power making a life with her cat Meowy, living in the woods and hunting wild bears for food. After Meowy is kidnapped by the Bat Devil, Power contemplates why she is actually going along with the devil's plan, and risking her life to find him a human to feed on just to save a cat. Despite her being a fiend, and despite her manic behavior, Power genuinely cares about her cat, and after a gross speech about her desire for blood, she realizes she...

As much as it might be nice for a non-superhero movie to do well at the current box office, that wasn’t to be this weekend, as Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” held off all comers, retaining the top spot at the box office with 27.7 million, down 59 from its opening weekend. Warner Bros’ second live action DC movie since March’s “The Batman” has made 111.1 million in North America alone. Overseas, Johnson’s comic book movie added another 39 million to bring its global total to 250 million in less than two weeks.

Holding strong in second place was the Julia Roberts–George Clooney comedy, “Ticket to Paradise,” which brought in an estimated 10 million (down 39) in its second weekend for a domestic total of 33.7 million.

It seems like the box office is slowly rebounding after a couple slower months, but this weekend, “Black Adam” won’t have much in terms of competition for the top spot, so it will score an easy second weekend at #1 probably with around 28 to 30 million or a little more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any new movies in wide release. In fact, there’s just one, and that’s Lionsgate’s much-delayed and name-changed horror flick “Prey for the Devil,” an exorcism horror drama directed by Daniel Stamm (“The Last Exorcism”). It stars Jacqueline Byers (“Salvation”) as Sister Ann, a rare female exorcist, who has to deal with a few cases of demonic possession. It also stars Virginia Madsen and Colin Salmon, both of whom have quite a bit of genre experience.
Stamm already knows how well exorcism movies do with moviegoers,...

This Chainsaw Man review contains spoilers.
Chainsaw Man Episode 1
Every year it seems like anime gets weirder, wilder, and more creative. There’s a natural tendency to keep moving forward that continues to push the medium to extreme places. This excess can function at the series’ surface level, but it’s also led to a trend where stylized expressions of magic, energy, or even violence can become powerful metaphors for the internal problems that consume us all. A lot of anime have pushed this idea to the extreme, but few are more ridiculous than Chainsaw Man, an anime where a mild-mannered teen named Denji transforms into a chainsaw-limbed God of destruction. In Chainsaw Man, this weapon’s engine revs loudly and body parts and viscera fly with reckless abandon, but the noise of this spectacle doesn’t drown out the heart and soul of the characters underneath.

Just a week ago, it really did look like Hulu’s long-awaited series, “Devil in the White City,” was coming together nicely. Not only was Keanu Reeves set to make the jump to prestige TV dramas for the series, produced by Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, no less, but Todd Field was aboard to direct. ‘Devil’ had all the makings of must-see, event TV.

Hulu’s Devil in the White City continues to fall apart.
Days after leading man Keanu Reeves departed the limited series from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, director Todd Field has also parted ways with the project.
Sources say Disney-owned streamer Hulu is now searching for a new star as well as a new helmer for Devil in the White City, which has been in various stages of development for more than a decade.
Reps for Hulu declined comment.
Field has recently been garnering awards season attention for writing and directing Tar, starring Cate Blanchett.
The show has been in the works for more than a decade, including a stint when it was envisioned as a feature film, with Sam Shaw (Hulu’s Castle Rock) on board as writer, showrunner and exec producer. DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner, Jennifer Davisson, exec produce alongside Scorsese.
