Netflix’s recent spate of international content showcases has continued today with an update on Korea.
Among the key updates for its 2024 Korea slate is Oldboy director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) releasing his first project with Netflix at the end of this year, titled Uprising.
The film, directed by Sang-man Kim and written by Shin Chul, was previously known as War and Revolt, and is due in Q4. It is billed as a “gripping journey through the lives of two childhood friends turned adversaries.” Gang Dong-won, Park Jeong-min, Cha Seung-won, Kim Shin-rock, Jin Sun-kyu and Jung Sung-ill star. Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.
In August last year, Netflix publicly committed to investing $2.5 billion on Korean content over the next four years. That reflected both Netflix’s position as the country’s leading streamer, with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, and its adopted role as one of the biggest exporters of Korean film and TV content.
“We were able to make this [investment] decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said the streamer’s co-chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the spending commitment.

As Lovecraft once put it, “the oldest and strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown,” which I think perfectly summarizes why cosmic horror stories are so effective. Commonly defined as a subgenre of fiction that derives scares from existential and/or incomprehensible threats, cosmic horror presents us with situations where knowledge isn’t necessarily power and the protagonists can’t always win. And with video games allowing players to virtually experience stories instead of merely observing them, it makes sense that developers frequently borrow from Lovecraftian fiction when attempting to tell deranged yarns.
However, not all cosmic scares are created equal, so we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the most disturbing moments of cosmic horror in video games. After all, it’s worth remembering that horror gaming has the potential for more than mere jump scares and repetitive zombie killing.
For the purposes of this list,...

While much of the initial fanbase that helped turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon aged out following the original cartoon (1987-1996) and live action movies (1990-1993), the property has continued to flourish with reboots in TV, film, and comics every few years.
If the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has you interested in exploring various versions of Tmnt, there’s no better place for a horror fan to start than Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series that aired for five seasons between 2012 and 2017.
While there’s an inherent connection to horror in the various mutants and monsters that pop up throughout the franchise, no rendition embraces the genre nearly as much as this one. In addition to references to classics like Alien, Friday the 13th, and The Evil Dead, the series employed several notable horror actors throughout its 124-episode run.

Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus‘ 2017 collaboration “Rainbowland” got 86’d from a first-grade spring concert setlist after school district officials in Wisconsin deemed the track controversial.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the parent of a first grader in Waukesha, Wisconsin, was excited about the Parton-Cyrus collab, along with some of the other songs slated to be part of the spring concert, which included Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World and Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie.
As for why the track that celebrates acceptance was banned from the spring concert, one parent told The Times that “the school district of Waukesha has really cracked down on anything LGBTQ” and that “this song being an ‘issue’ has not in any way come as a surprise.”

The '80s was a pretty great time to be an undead bloodsucker. Writers and directors were clearly enjoying themselves playing with the old tropes; Tony Scott's "The Hunger" dispensed with fangs altogether and toyed with the idea of vampire immortality before turning into softcore erotica; Nicolas Cage lost the plot and munched live cockroaches in "Vampire's Kiss;" Kathryn Bigelow brought a Western theme to her mean and moody "Near Dark;" and "Lifeforce" even gave us vampires from outer space. To top it all off, Count Dracula teamed up with other classic Universal monsters like the Wolf Man and the Mummy in "The Monster Squad." These movies left behind the spooky castles and misty graveyards of Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee's iconic iterations of Bram Stoker's most famous creation, bringing the vampire myth right into the modern world.

The Disney+ series "Loki" gave us a whole lot of Tom Hiddleston (thank you) through a story about his character's redemption. We watched him fall in love with himself in the form of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) -- hey, this is Loki we're talking about here -- and we saw him try to solve the mystery of the Time Variance Authority, take down the system, and break open the multiverse. We also got a dose of Alligator Loki and Frog Thor, and if those two things don't satisfy you, I don't know what will.

Exclusive: In an unusual move, but one that speaks to fluidity in the distribution landscape and increasing demand for foreign-language series, LA-based film firm The Exchange is launching world sales (excluding Iran) at the upcoming Cannes virtual market on hit Iranian TV series The Frog.
The series follows Ramin, a man dissatisfied with a life of low-paying petty crime in Tehran, who determines with friends to rob an enormously wealthy former classmate. However, the theft goes fatally awry and Ramin finds himself entangled in a dangerous web of deceit involving the police, local gangsters, and greedy family members.
It’s rare for TV series to be launched at film markets. But the very concept of a market has been fraying in recent years, especially in the Covid era. Sales increasingly take place across the year and traditional film companies are increasingly working in TV.

Australia might just be in for an Academy Award win come Monday, with Love and Monsters tipped as a dark horse in this year’s race for the Visual Effects Oscar.
Matt Sloan, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Everitt and Brian Cox are on the ballot for their work crafting giant, mutated creatures for the Brisbane-shot post-apocalyptic film, each imbued with its own individual characteristics and unique personality.
But while it might be easy to assume Love and Monsters is a creature feature at first glance, VFX supervisor Sloan says director Michael Matthews made it clear at the outset the film was “not about monsters.”
A comedy adventure, Love and Monsters is set in a world where humans have been forced underground after giant creatures took control of the land.

After only three episodes of “The Masked Singer” we are already at the play-off stage for Group B. Back on March 17, the five celebrities in this group made their debuts as Black Swan, Chameleon, Grandpa Monster, Phoenix and Piglet. Phoenix failed to get a rise from the four judges and was revealed by guest host Niecy Nash to be Caitlyn Jenner.
On March 31, the four remaining celebrities in Group B will once again take to the stage and raise their voices in song in episode 4 of season 5 of “The Masked Singer.” They will be joined by the second of Wildcard contestants, who will appear at the end of the episode to vie for votes.

For as much as you’ll likely grow tired of hearing the term “game-changing” in the new season of The Masked Singer, you’ve gotta admit: The descriptor is factually accurate.

Who are these rogue actors, who have the ability to switch up the competition (cough such as it is cough)? We… still don’t know.
