After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

It was a bit of a good news, bad news situation for Sony Pictures over the weekend. The good news is that "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," the latest entry in the long-running comedy/horror franchise, topped the box office with a $45 million haul. That was at the high end of expectations, which was certainly positive, and theaters could use the help right now. At the same time, the movie carries a $100 million budget — which was quite a bit higher than 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife." And yet, at the end of the day, both movies opened to just about the same number domestically. This provides proof that this franchise has a pretty well-defined ceiling commercially, which likely limits what can be done going forward.
What's interesting is that the last three movies in the series all opened in an eerily similar range. 2016's female-led "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" took in $46 million on its...

The 2016 Ghostbusters might be one of the most flames major productions of this century, with the trailer quickly becoming the most disliked on YouTube. There were a couple of camps here. One was targeted as being misogynistic, taking personal affront that their beloved characters had been replaced by women. While another is that there just didn’t seem like a point to it all. Why bother if you don’t have the original Ghosbusters? Well, one late recruit — Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore — has some thoughts on the matter.
As Ernie Hudson told The Independent, it seemed like a waste to make the Ghostbusters back in 2016, saying, “Look, I’m a fan of [director] Paul Feig so I have nothing negative about him to say. Other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean? Just make another movie.”

The Ghostbusters franchise is a pop culture behemoth. It started back in 1984 with a hilarious film about ghost-catching scientists, however its success stemmed from more than just humor. People loved the quirky characters and the funny story.
A still from Ghostbusters (1984)
After the first movie, Ghostbusters became a cultural phenomenon, spawning sequels, animated series, video games, and tons of merchandise — becoming $959 million worth iconic franchise (via The Numbers). In its wake, however, not every addition to it has been a hit with fans.
2 Ghostbusters Sequels That Miss the Mark Despite Iconic Legacy
The Ghostbusters franchise is hard to live up to. Both Ghostbusters: Answer The Call and Ghostbusters II have their fans, but they couldn’t match the charm of the original movie.

When I was a kid, three major unifying interests defied gender at my school: Pokémon, Power Rangers, and anything related to the Ghostbusters. The line in the sand is often drawn between pink and blue, but when it came to these three areas, it was generally accepted that everyone loved these worlds. We traded Pokémon cards on the playground and huddled around the kid with the GameBoy during recess, friend groups delegated which color Power Ranger each person was, and hangouts where Super Soakers doubled as "proton packs" were what scorching hot summers were made of. This is to say I love all things "Ghostbusters," so everything I'm about to say moving forward is rooted in a deep adoration for the franchise and all of the people involved who helped bring this zany supernatural comedy about a ragtag group of eccentric...

Ghostbusters movies stretch credulity, but this is ridiculous.
At the start of Ghostbusters II, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) perform for bored kids at a birthday party. It’s only been five years since they blew up the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in downtown New York and destroyed Gozer’s portal atop a city high rise. And yet, no one remembers the work the boys did to save the city.
In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ghostbusters are completely unknown to Gen Z, even to the grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), even to a kid so into podcasts that he calls himself Podcast. It’s only been 30 years since the team drove the Statue of Liberty down the center of the city.

Who are you going to call? Ghostbusters!
Nearly 40 years ago, in June 1984, Ghostbusters premiered, and a phenomenon was created. Since then, several sequels and anime shows have been created. Yet we waited over 30 years after Ghostbusters II for a sequel in the same universe.
Now we're lucky to get another sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Here is everything we know about the upcoming sequel.
Why is the Ghostbusters Franchise Continuing?
After Ghostbusters: Afterlife grossed $200 million, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan immediately signed a deal to do a sequel –Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
They planned to continue the story with the Spenglers and combine the old and new ghosthunters again.
What is the Background of the Ghostbusters Franchise?
It isn’t easy to believe that this franchise was created nearly 40 years ago, with Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis creating the original premise and the script.

This article contains light spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
We’ve got one! And by “one” I mean a female Ghostbuster that even jerks might like! Maybe!
The last time we got women as Ghostbusters, sexist buffoons making bad-faith arguments about the apparent sanctity of boy Ghostbusters drowned out all discussion of the 2016 reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, preventing both those who enjoyed the movie and those who disliked it for actual sane reasons from sharing their viewpoints.
That extreme response drove Sony to return to the franchise’s roots for its follow-up Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Although the movie took place in Oklahoma and took a decidedly dour, respectful tone, it focused on connections to the first team. It starred Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard as the daughter and grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis). Together with their friends and their teacher Mr.

Theatrical movies truly came back in 2023. Despite a major strike and the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic, audiences returned in droves to watch big releases. From the twin tentpoles of Barbie and Oppenheimer to the more niche faves such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and John Wick: Chapter 4, the cinematic slate of 2023 gave fans of every variety a reason to get back to the cinemas.
Moviemakers hope to continue this trend in 2024, and the key strategy seems to be sequels, prequels, and remakes. Some of these movies come from the artists who captured audiences’ hearts in the first place, while others come from fresh faces, hoping to infuse a familiar tale with new energy.
Some of the big names include a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie, a new continuation of the shocking and shockingly successful Terrifier story, the Netflix movie Beverly Hills Cop 4,...

There is no Gozer, only… well, we don’t know yet.
After the chaos that followed the release of 2016’s series revamp Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Sony went full nostalgia with Ghostbusters: Afterlife in an attempt to appease change-resistant fans. The studio recruited Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, as well as the original four Ghostbusters (including the late Harold Ramis in CGI-ghost form). Afterlife even brought back the main villain of that first movie, Gozer the Gozerian.
In other words, it was a textbook legacy sequel that introduced a new generation of heroes while nodding to the originals, and according to Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan, the movie’s structure demanded Gozer’s return.
“Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past,” he told Empire. That explanation does track with...

The "Ghostbusters" franchise may be small when compared to the likes of the "Star Wars" saga or the ongoing films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But because the original movie is one of the greatest films of all time, the name still resonates across generations, and the film series now spans decades.
Beginning back in 1984, the original "Ghostbusters" from director Ivan Reitman and writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd (who also star in the movie as the titular paranormal exterminators alongside Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson) follows a trio of scientists who have been trying to figure how to detect and capture ghosts. Banished by the school funding them, they head out into the private sector of New York City and become paranormal exterminators who suddenly find themselves dealing with an apocalyptic scenario in the middle of the Big Apple. After a so-so-sequel in 1989, the franchise came back to life...

The actor spoke to ComicBook.com while promoting the fourth season of TBS’s “Miracle Workers” and shot down the notion while wishing whomever takes his place as “the boy who lived” the best of luck.
“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere,” Radcliffe stated. “So, I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. Second time's the charm? Disney is taking another stab at bringing the grim-grinning ghosts from its "Haunted Mansion" theme park ride out to socialize on the big screen. Its first attempt was in 2003 with Rob Minkoff's "The Haunted Mansion," a supernatural horror comedy anchored by Eddie Murphy that was basically Doa and has since been mostly forgotten. The studio is trying again 20 years later with "Haunted Mansion," a movie that defies the recent reboot trend by subtracting a "The" from the title rather than adding one.
"Haunted Mansion" comes from director Justin Simien and writer Katie Dippold ("Ghostbusters: Answer the Call"), both of whom have a clear affinity for horror-comedy. Indeed, the movie's trailer serves up equal-sized portions of laughs and scares, all set to the eerie tune of Roy Orbison's 1975 song "House Without Windows." Earlier today marked the end of an era, as heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne has announced that he's ending his touring career for good. His underlying health issues have made it difficult for the Black Sabbath singer to go through with the demanding requirements that a tour requires. Thankfully, Osbourne hasn't ruled out making an appearance down the line if the circumstances are right, given that he claims that his vocals are in pretty good shape.
For all of the waves he made on stage, however, Osbourne could also be seen popping in a movie every now and then for a small cameo. A few notable examples would be "Moulin Rouge!," "Austin Powers: Goldmember," and "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" (2016). In most of these cases, he's usually playing a variation on himself. He's become one of those faces that you could recognize almost instantly, due to his larger than life stature.

Jennifer Lawrence Gets Reminded That No, ‘The Hunger Games’ Wasn’t the First Female-Led Action Movie
Jennifer Lawrence invited pushback on social media today after stating in an interview between herself and Viola Davis that Katniss Everdeen was essentially the first female action hero.
While the conversation with fellow actress Viola Davis covers a number of subjects, the excerpt Variety chose to excerpt was of the “Winter’s Bone” and “Causeway” star stating that “I remember doing ‘Hunger Games,’ nobody ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie before.”
That provably incorrect statement unleashed a deluge of online pushback, with responders throwing out various examples of big action movies with female leads. Variety eventually took down the offending tweet, a rare move in a media ecosystem that sometimes prioritizes outrage-driven engagement.

Soon after Chris Hemsworth signed on to star in the 2016 franchise comeback, "Ghostbusters: Answer The Call," he came to the unsettling conclusion that it might be the role that would end his career. Undoubtedly, a certain subset of awful fanboys will read that sentence and assume they know why: probably for the same reasons the film was raked over the coals by online discourse! The film features a largely female cast of SNL alums — Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones — and for that, it stood apart from all the...

For some, the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot is a solid comedy, unfairly maligned and largely underrated. For others, who are hopefully still reading this sentence and haven’t jumped directly to the comments, the 2016 Ghostbusters is a humor graveyard. But for Chris Hemsworth, the movie marked a change in his career path, giving him tools that he still uses today.
In a recap of his previous roles for GQ, Hemsworth recalled the trepidation he felt when he came into the film. While Hemsworth did get to do a few jokes in movies such as Cabin in the Woods, The Perfect Getaway, and Vacation, he was primarily known for playing imposing and handsome characters like Thor. Hemsworth describes the experience of looking at the script for his scenes as only loosely sketched out, because he and the others would be improvising.
“I’m going to let everyone down,” Hemsworth remembered thinking.

When “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” was released this fall, it seemed to be far less controversial than the 2016 reboot “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.” ‘Afterlife’ definitely fits the model of the trendy legacy sequel tropes we’ve been seeing over the past few years by bringing back a ton of nostalgia and fan service while also trying to lay the groundwork for future films. Oh yeah, and it is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of “Ghostbusters” filmmaker Ivan Reitman.

Sony's upcoming "Ghostbusters" Ultimate Collection box set will include more than its fair share of special features, deleted scenes, and more from the cinematic world of "Ghostbusters," including this year's legacyquel "Ghostbusters: Afterlife." However, the box set has rightly been making headlines for what it doesn't include: a hard copy of director Paul Feig's reboot of the horror-comedy film series, "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call." Now, it seems Sony noticed the outcry and has taken steps to amend things. Sorta.

The funniest Twitter thread of the year wasn't just a merciless evisceration of how every blockbuster movie trailer feels the same -- it was a specific evisceration of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," which has been sold to audiences as the "serious" counterpoint to 2016's "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call." And while watching Ghostbusters discourse become a haven for sexist trolls has been nothing short of head-spinning, there's zero question that the movies themselves get caught in the crossfire.

Audiences once again answered the call for the Ghostbusters. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Jason Reitman’s sequel-slash-relaunch of the popular 1980s comedy franchise, took top honors at the box office over the weekend, earning an estimated $44 million in North America and roughly $60 million total worldwide.
That number puts the new movie — which ties directly to the events of the first two films, directed by Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman — in line with “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call,” Paul Feig’s all-female comedy reboot of the franchise, which opened to $46 million in ticket sales in 2016. Of course, things were different back then on a number of fronts. “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call” came out in the summertime and before the coronavirus pandemic upended traditional moviegoing habits. Feig’s film, which was a cultural lightning rod, also leaned more into the comedy aspect of the “Ghostbusters” franchise and starred “SNL” veterans like Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon,...

When "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" hit theaters in 2016, it came with the joyous return of the classic Hi-c drink Ecto Cooler, the previously discontinued drink that featured a cartoon Slimer from "The Real Ghostbusters" on the juice box. Unfortunately, not long after the cross-promotion hit shelves, the drink that features a mix of tangerine, orange and a bit of "slime" was again taken away. However, we have some (slightly) good news for fans looking for an Ecto Cooler comeback with the arrival of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" in theaters this week. Ecto Cooler is coming back, but it's not going to be easy to track down.

A whopping 37 years after the original “Ghostbusters” movie hit theaters and 32 years after the sequel, it’s finally time for the third narrative installment, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” Reprising their roles in Sony’s highly anticipated film, which was delayed multiple times by the pandemic, are Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts, with the late Harold Ramis appearing via archival footage. Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Paul Rudd are the fresh cast members who drive the current story. Will audiences flock to “Ghostbusters III” when it opens on Friday?

Once upon a time, Disney was considering letting Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water“) remake their Eddie Murphy movie “Haunted Mansion,” which is based on their beloved theme park attraction. As the name would suggest features a mansion filled to the brim with various ghosts. Flash forward to today, “Dear White People“s Justin Simien is set to direct the newest incarnation with a script penned by Katie Dippold (“Ghostbusters: Answer The Call“).

Head of Warner Bros. Animation Sam Register is adding Cartoon Network’s productions to his purview with an elevation to president of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. Meanwhile, Cartoon Network Studios head Rob Sorcher will transition to an overall production deal with Warner Bros. Television Group.
Register will now oversee both animation studios, which will continue to function as separate entities but will be “united by a commitment to creative excellence, new voices, and a culture of inclusion and collaboration,” according to the company. Sure, “Birds of Prey” isn’t the first, and won’t be the last, film to get a title change after it hit theaters. Just in recent years, that distinction has gone to “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call” and “Live Die Repeat” (aka “Edge of Tomorrow”). But the interesting thing about “Birds of Prey” is how quickly the title changed, and how it’s obvious that Warner Bros.

The last few years have seen a flurry of films designed to retcon away undesirable entries in long-standing franchises. 2016’s Blair Witch treated the events of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 as a movie-within-a-movie as it continued the story of the 1999 independent film The Blair Witch Project; 2018’s Halloween ignored all nine installments in that franchise after the 1978 original; and this year’s forthcoming Candyman follow-up intends to ignore 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead, while Ghostbusters: Afterlife will disregard 2016’s franchise reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.
The most recent entry in this incredibly niche genre is 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, Tim Miller’s disappointing second directorial effort after 2016’s Deadpool. The sixth big-screen installment in James Cameron’s science-fiction franchise serves as a direct sequel to 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest sequels ever produced.

To say the reaction from fans over the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot was a low point for the internet would be an understatement. Even before its release, folks were outraged that a new iteration, starring women and ignoring the original two, was being made. And the fans certainly took out their anger on the stars and in particular, Leslie Jones. So much so that Jones quit Twitter briefly due to the harassment.
This incident had me really rooting for the Ghostbusters reboot to succeed. Sadly, however, despite the talents of those in front of the camera and director Paul Feig, the film was just kind of a “meh.” Not terrible, but also unmemorable. And the movie was supposed to be the start of a whole new franchise. It seriously underperformed though, making $229 million off of a hefty $144 million budget. It also didn’t help that China wouldn’t release it due to...

Snowpiercer will finally get the wheels moving this spring -- almost five years after the TV adaptation entered development.
The series will receive its highly anticipated premiere Sunday, May 31 at 9/8c.
The series was initially slated to air on TNT, but was later moved to the comedy-heavy TBS, leading to many wondering what was going on.
However, the network later reversed that decision and moved Snowpiercer back to TNT.
The series also received a major setback when it was announced that showrunner Josh Friedman was stepping away from the adaptation.
Snowpiercer follows the remaining members of the human race seven years after an ice age turns the world into a ball of ice.
The final group of people alive are aboard a giant train that makes its way around the globe, and will explore “class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival,” according to the official description.

All aboard: TNT has finally set the premiere date for its TV adaptation of “Snowpiercer,” which stars Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs.
The post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama, which is based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel series and the Bong Joon Ho-directed film of the same name, will premiere Sunday, May 31 at 9/8c on the cable channel.
In case you forgot, this is the long-gestating show that started at TNT, moved to TBS and then moved back to TNT. It’s also the show that Josh Friedman wrote the original pilot for and was set to serve as showrunner on, only to be fired over “creative differences” in February 2018 and replaced by “Orphan Black” co-creator Graeme Manson — a decision he did not take well.

This shameless attempt by screenwriter Emma Thompson to siphon off the eggnog flavour from Love Actually is clunky and weird
For years, Richard Curtis has attracted imitators to his brand of upscale London romcom. This squelchingly sub-Curtis effort is a case in point, and what’s so baffling is that it is co-written by Emma Thompson, whose undoubted screenplay skills form part of her unique double-Oscar achievement. And it is directed by the equally estimable Paul Feig, who gave us Bridesmaids and the Ghostbusters remake.
This grisly Christmassy adventure features unbearable skittery-giggly dialogue of the sort not spoken by actual humans, while it attempts to siphon off the eggnog flavour from Curtis’s Love Actually, with a female lead who is a Frankenstein’s-monster mix of Bridget Jones and the quirky sister from Notting Hill. The film is supposedly inspired by the music of the late George Michael – who gave...

Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels both feels like a product of the growing trend of all-female reboots, a la Ghostbusters and Ocean’s 8, as well as existing parallel to that movement. Because whereas those recent releases gender-swapped the paranormal and heist-movie boys’ clubs, Charlie’s Angels has always been (obviously) female. What makes writer-director Banks’ take so winningly subversive though is that it reorients the male gaze of the original versions to present an entertaining, if still occasionally fluffy, action film that doesn’t just pay lip service to female empowerment but actually empowers its women.
Not quite a reboot, this reimagining/sequel acknowledges the larger franchise from the 1970s TV series to the 2000s movies, while simultaneously expanding it. Instead of being the Angels, Sabina (Kristen Stewart), Jane (Ella Balinska...

Jason Reitman is approaching the original two films with reverence but also striking out in a fresh direction, while the official synopsis explains that the story will centre on a family who moves back to a small town “where they learn more about who they are.”

Back in January, we got the shocking announcement that a new Ghostbusters movie is on its way. Since then, the production has become informally known as Ghostbusters 2020 or Ghostbusters 3. But now that we’re nearing its year of release, the film’s actual title may have finally been revealed.
As per BadTaste. It, the movie will go by the name Ghostbusters: Afterlife. And while this hasn’t been confirmed just yet by Sony, it would certainly be a fitting moniker for the project, considering what we know about the pic so far. For one, it’s a legacy sequel to the original two outings and not a reboot like 2016’s Answer the Call. So, if it’s about life beyond the classic films, then Afterlife would be an appropriately pun-based title.
