[Editor’s Note: Our own Scott Drebit recently hosted panels at the sixth annual Calgary Horror Con. At the three-day event, Scott caught up with Adrienne King, who discussed playing the first final girl in the Friday the 13th franchise, her interest in painting, returning to acting, and teaming up with Valley View to create Crystal Lake Wines.]
Hi Adrienne, thanks for sitting down with Daily Dead. I’d like to start off with Friday the 13th. It’s always been my belief that Halloween is unique and an anomaly, and that Friday the 13th really set the tone for the slashers that followed.
Adrienne King: I think so, too. In terms of women not being victims, or a woman being the killer, it hadn’t really been done before. And sometimes I think about if it was accidentally empowering women, or if they just wanted to do something that had a twist. And who would have ever guessed that the killer could have been a woman? A sweet lady, too, Betsy Palmer. No one saw that coming.
My generation really didn’t know Betsy Palmer. But when my parents saw her on the screen, they were like, “Oh my god! Betsy Palmer is the killer!” They...

After a bombardment of terrible sequels and remakes, the horror movie genre is undergoing something of a renaissance of late with the excellent Babadook and this week's It Follows leading the charge.
Both films are driven by strong performances from up-and-coming female stars (Essie Davis and Maika Monroe), which brings to mind a classic horror movie trope: the Final Girl. Most prevalent in slasher films, the Final Girl is the last character standing who confronts a killer/ghost/demon and lives to tell the tale.
Digital Spy looks back at 7 of our favourite horror movie Final Girls, why they're iconic and what they're up to now...
1. Neve Campbell - Sidney Prescott in Scream
Many horror fans thought Drew Barrymore would end up being Scream's Final Girl when they first watched Wes Craven's 1996 horror, but the director offed her in the opening moments leaving Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott to face down Ghostface.

On tap right now is the first teaser for indie maven Mel House's latest terror tale Spavine, which is still hitting the fest circuit and currently causing quite a buzz with distributors. Dig it!
Spavine was written and directed by Tiffany Heath and stars Denton Blane Everett (Psychic Experiment), Tiffany Heath (Mulberry Stains), and Jake Austin. House produces with Heath and Nick W. Nicholson. Phil Nichols/Facades FX handled the special makeup effects, including the mask you see on the poster below.
"With this film the Spavine team set out to strike a balance between classic gore like Texas Chainsaw and Hitchcockian psychological suspense," says Heath. "Spavine has an art-house film look but isn't 'snobby' in that it really cares about the audience and gives them the proper dose of gore, terror, suspense, and overall real life madness. There is nothing supernatural in the movie. Every bit of this...

"I made the choice to do indie films, and I’ve had a lot of fun. I’ve had much better roles than a lot of the women that are working in Hollywood because I get to do the sort of crazy, nutty characters... like in American Nightmare I play a psycho serial killer. Very seriously. Not for laughs. I get to play really good roles, and that’s why I’ve always been drawn to it."
That quote was from a 2008 interview with Debbie Rochon. Seeing how we're celebrating Indie Horror Month here at Dread Central, I thought it would be nice to focus this month's Tip of the Scalpels on indie stars (don't worry, Stephen King fans, we'll get back to him very soon). You know that you're in trouble when the protagonist of your film must be reminded in the very first scene to remember his medication. (Cue the close-up of prescription bottle changing hands.) If only I had been reminded to take my medication before watching Psychic Experiment, maybe I would have been in the proper state of mind to follow it. Describing the plot of this newest film from Texas indie filmmaker Mel Closet Space House is a bit daunting. There are so many characters and story threads wandering around the wildly ambitious, yet convoluted, screenplay that it would take multiple viewings to sort out all the bizarre goings-on. Even with the meds, my prescription simply isn't strong enough to watch this epic horror/sci/fi mash-up a second time.
This is what I can tell you for certain: Dr.

Exclusive Interview: Actress Adrienne King Talks Psychic Experiment, Her Return to Acting, and More!
Today, December 6th, Lionsgate unleashes writer/director Mel House's Psychic Experiment on DVD shelves everywhere (the film is also currently available on VOD platforms). It features an all-star cast including Katie Featherston, Debbie Rochon, Reggie Bannister, Glenn Morshower, Kathy Lamkin and Shannon Lark as well as the subject of this interview, Friday the 13th's original final girl herself- Adrienne King.
Psychic Experiment is centered around an idyllic, small, self-sufficient community which seems like the perfect neighborhood on the surface. After all, everything you could possibly need is within walking distance. But eventually the pastoral exterior conceals a dark past and an even darker secret, and as a group of individuals - each with their own ties and agendas with the town and each other - converge on the enclave, strange things begin to happen. Very strange things. Strange enough to test - and then break - the very fabric of reality itself.

Parrish Randall is a Texas actor who has a lot of cool stuff going on. He’s part of the team putting together the “Don’t Look in the Basement” remake together and he recently got to work on one of the Chillerama segments that we’ll be seeing this fall. Randall talks about his filming experiences and a few more upcoming projects in the works. Check out my latest Versus with actor and all around cool guy Parrish Randall.
Brian S- First off, how'd you get into acting and filmmaking?
Parrish Randall- I grew up watching the old classics on TV...you know, the Bogie, Jimmy Stewart, John Garfield type of films and was always mesmerized that the medium of film could take the viewer on adventures for two hours that one could never imagine going on. Pretty cool, I thought, even at six years old watching these films.

Stone created, and stars in, this psychological thriller about a pregnant womant faced with poverty, crime, violence, and eventual madness.
Stone plays "Havi", the pregnant woman, and director Abel Berry (Kodie) also co-stars as "Caleb", her criminal boyfriend. Andrew Rose acts as producer, and you'll recognize Shannon Lark (Walking Distance) and Dai Green (Resurrection) right away.
This story doesn't seem simple; when you watch the trailer you'll see that this is a dystopian creation, set in a bleak worls where poverty and crime are everywhere. Havi is unable to seek out a better life for herself and her family, because there is no better life to be had. Filled with a denizen of unsafe, neurotic, cruel, and criminal characters, this story is not a happy one. Prepare to feel bummed out, but intrigued:

For Phil Nichols, his fascination with the horror genre began at a very young age. The writer/director/producer/actor/special effects guru (how's that for being multi-hyphenate?) spoke about how being born into a family with an appreciation for the spookier things in life sparked his many interests in working within the genre.
"My love for horror started when I was three years old in 1967 when I started watching 'Dark Shadows' every day because my mom was addicted to it," Nichols explained. "My whole family was really different, almost like we were The Addams Family or something. We'd carve pumpkins whenever we wanted, and we'd go trick-or-treating in July if we felt like it. So I've always been around people who like to be scared and have an appreciation for scaring others."

Every so often, a role comes along that is so juicy and dynamic that an actor truly gets to sink his teeth in to the hilt and give it a good shake; these roles allow the actor to show a range of emotion and progress his character throughout the length of the film in ways that most scripts simply fail at enabling.
Enter Fell, the newest feature-length offering from Marcus Koch. Best known for his special effects work in films like Walking Distance and Sweatshop, Koch also directed the cult favorite 100 Tears and Rot, showing a wide range of ability in his warped mind. Title: Paranormal Activity 2 Directed by: Tod Williams (Wings Over the Rockies, The Door in the Floor) Starring: Katie Featherston (Paranormal Activity, Walking Distance) Great demonic horror films, such as ‘The Exorcist,’ provide developed characters and thorough back-stories in an effort to get the audience to relate to the possessed character’s pain. While no film rivals the 1973 classic, last year’s critical and box-office hit ‘Paranormal Activity’ was extremely close. The thriller was so successful because the main character, Katie, believed she had a ghostly presence following her around since childhood, something a multitude of people around the world claim they can relate to. Paramount Pictures decided to try to replicate the movie’s [...]...

Filming will start in Los Angeles this month on Dog Fight, a horror film which also includes action, crime and torture elements.
According to the official description, the plot "revolves around an underground fighting ring whose competitors are made up of women who have been kidnapped and 'broken' - essentially being turned into rabid dogs psychologically."
But, despite that potentially controversial storyline, you may be surprised to learn it's been scripted by two women and has two female producers.
Written by Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska (pictured top), the twin team behind Dead Hooker in a Trunk, it is being directed by Sean-Michael Argo, whose feature Fable: Teeth of Beasts screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film is produced by Tara Cardinal (pictured above right), who recently finished shooting action/fantasy flick Legend of the Red Reaper, and Devanny Pinn who, aside from appearances in Piranha 3D and the upcoming sci-fi thriller 15 Till Midnight,...
