While I’m never going to consider it a “good” movie, I’m strangely glad that director Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho exists. It only serves to make the original movie that much better (as though such a thing was possible) by demonstrating all the things Hitchcock does so perfectly that the remake gets perfectly wrong. Think of it as a $20 million experimental film; now that is has been tried and failed, we know that the experiment doesn’t need repeating. That alone has to be worth something.
Coming off the enormous box office success and a bunch of Oscar nominations for Good Will Hunting, indie director Gus Van Sant suddenly found himself with a great deal of studio clout. Ever the outsider artist, Van Sant decided to cash in all of that goodwill by finally realizing a long-held desire to do a shot-for-shot remake of Psycho—which,...

We here at FEARnet are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of producer Hilton A. Green yesterday at the age of 84. His father Alfred E. Green was a legendary director in his own right, but Hilton worked his way up as an assistant director for several popular television shows including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, which led to him working as first A.D on the original 'Psycho' and later 'Marnie.' From there he went on to produce all the 'Psycho' sequels & was the one common thread (besides Anthony Perkins) that all of those films shared. He also produced the John Hughes comedy classic 'Sixteen Candles' and 'Home Alone 3.'
On a personal note, Hilton was the one person to appear in 'The Psycho Legacy,' a documentary/love letter I wrote and directed, that was involved in every single 'Psycho' movie and...

A&E has completed its first season of Bates Motel. The series – based on the early years of Psycho character Norman Bates and his relationship with mother, Norma – proved to be a hit, but was it a consistent success?
To answer this question, BloodCast host Ryan Turek brought in Robert Galluzzo – director of The Psycho Legacy documentary and host of GeekNation’s own Killer Pov podcast – and horror critic Brian Collins to analyze not just the season finale, but the series as a whole. Last night saw the season one finale of Bates Motel. I'll be diving into an analysis of the hit A&E show a bit later today on The BloodCast podcast (with guests Brian Collins and The Psycho Legacy's Robert Galluzzo), until then, let's read what Carlton Cuse has to say about season two, shall we?
The showrunner spoke recently to The Hollywood Reporter. When asked what he had in mind for the sophomore season, moreover, if it would pick up a bit later in Norman's teenage years, Cuse said: "I don't want to say exactly how we're going to do that. Certainly the events at end of this season are very much in play when season two opens."

Having examined, investigated and completely broken down the ins and outs of the entire 'Psycho' franchise for my documentary project 'The Psycho Legacy,' I’ve managed to become pretty well versed in the mythology and time-line of all the events as they take place within the universe set up by Sir Alfred Hitchcock in his 1960 adaptation of the Robert Bloch novel 'Psycho' right through to the final prequel/sequel of that particular franchise with 'Psycho IV: The Beginning.'
One of my initial concerns with A&E’s original announcement regarding their prequel show 'Bates Motel' was that my knowledge of the movies was going to spoil all the details of how the events leading up to the first 'Psycho' had transpired. But alas, what the writers and producers of the show wisely opted to do instead was set the re-imagining in the present day.

Before there was such horror spoofs as Scary Movie starring Anna Faris. Before there was such self referential horror films such as Scream from director Wes Craven. After there was Student Bodies. There was Rolfe Kanefsky's independent horror spoof of "There's Nothing Out There". There's Nothing Out There arrives to DVD today in a 20th Anniversary Edition courtesy of Troma Team Video. There's Nothing Out There went virtually ignored when it first came out, but over the years this trend setting film has went on to find an audience with multiple DVD and video releases over the years. There's Nothing Out There is a criminally underrated film that is still attracting a slow, but surely following. What was especially noteworthy about There's Nothing Out There was the fact that it featured a character who had seen every horror film there was out there and realizes that the actions that...

A few weeks back this writer had the opportunity to chat with up-and-coming composer Jermaine Stegall while he was at the La Screamfest Horror Film Festival supporting the two features he had scored that were selected entries: Rogue River and The Psycho Legacy.
After quickly realizing that a few moments on the red carpet wasn’t enough time to learn about this new rising genre talent, Dread Central recently caught up with Stegall again to talk about his work on scoring both The Psycho Legacy and Rogue River, what inspired him to become a composer, and how it felt to be working on a documentary about a film series that featured one of the most memorable scores not in only the horror genre but in the entire history of cinema as well.
Dread Central: Can you talk about how you got interested in scoring movies and how you started off in the industry?...

Figured I'd chime in on the news circulating around the web. Yes, indeed, a feature-length Scream retrospective is in the works, joining the ranks of Halloween: 25 Years Later , His Name Was Jason and The Psycho Legacy . Producer Anthony Masi and myself (working as writer-director) have been well underway on this project for a number of months now, with the blessing of Bob Weinstein and Wes Craven, exploring the Scream trilogy and examining how it changed the face of horror in the late-'90s. Everyone's on board so far and we've got a ton of interviews banked. Can't really say much more than what Miska broke at Bloody-Disgusting but I assure you, this is going to rock. We're also still cooking on that Hellraiser retrospective that was announced last year. I've...

The best part of this solid documentary is the way it adds to the Psycho legacy itself by providing tons of info on the underrated sequels. All the Psycho films are at least interesting and the fact that Norman Bates has continued to interest pop culture an even more interesting one. Robert Galluzzo does a great job navigating the difficult territory of Anthony Perkins public and private identification with the Bates character, and scores major points by locating the Psycho influence in stuff like Adam Greens excellent film Spiral.
Galluzzo and I talked about the project and the long process of putting it together.
Robert Galluzzo: When you talk about Norman becoming an icon, you're talking about a human being as much as you are a monster. Everything that happens in any of the four Psycho films could actually happen, I think that's a really powerful component here. As popular...

This writer caught up with genre journalist and documentary filmmaker Robert Galluzzo this past Tuesday night at the Burbank, CA hot spot of horror, Dark Delicacies, as he celebrated the release of his documentary The Psycho Legacy (which that day released nationwide via Shout! Factory) with a well attended, in-store DVD signing.
It seemed an appropriate evening to pick his brain as fans and Psycho alumni arrived en masse, as did an intimidating lightning storm that hovered over the Los Angeles basin, not unlike the one Psycho star Janet Leigh drove through on her way to her eventual demise in the original 1960 Hitchcock classic, which, along with its sequels, served as the inspiration for Galluzzo’s The Psycho Legacy.

It's a shame The Psycho Legacy didn't come out a couple years ago. True, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Hitchcock's classic, so the timing is perfect. But released on the heels of Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, one can't help but compare the two, and the Psycho documentary comes up lacking.
That should not be the case. After all, Psycho has deeper roots, interwoven into generations of moviegoers since the 60's. One can argue that Freddy might not have appeared on the big screen had Norman Bates not paved the way. But the filmmakers stumble at the start, spending less time discussing the...

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

The makers of what looks to be be a fascinating independent retrospective documentary about the Psycho films and their spin-offs, The Psycho Legacy, have released a new trailer. It comes ahead of a possible release of the film later this year. It can be viewed by clicking on the Trailer tab above.
The original Psycho will be 50 years old next year. It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock from a script by Joseph Stefano based on the novel by Robert Bloch. The film helped to make a star of Anthony Perkins, who played the murderous Norman Bates. Anyone familiar with the making of Steven Spielberg's classic film Jaws will know that there were times when the making of the movie was a nightmare for everyone on set. In hindsight, though, it was definitely worth the trouble because of the influence the film has had and the devotion shown by its many fans.
None of those fans can be more devoted that the makers of The Shark is Still Working (Tsisw). Tsisw is an independently-made documentary that oozes adoration for Jaws. Nonetheless, it manages to be nautical miles better than many making-of features Hollywood puts out as glorified advertising for its products. It was produced by uber-Jaws fans James Gelet (Grizzly Park, The Marks of a Cult: A Biblical Analysis), Jake Gove (webmaster of JAWSmovie.com), J. Michael Roddy (The Psycho Legacy), and director and Jaws prop collector Erik Hollander (Grizzly Park). The appreciation these people...

Three years ago producer/writer Anthony Masi took on the legacy of Haddonfield’s most infamous resident, Michael Myers, in his documentary Halloween: 25 Years of Terror (review here). The very same year he produced a retrospective on Bob Clark’s cult horror classic Black Christmas. How does someone follow that up? By taking horror fans back to Camp Crystal Lake with a new documentary, His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th..
“Everyone knows who Jason is. He’s so iconic that it’s not even just horror fans that know who he is. He’s almost like Santa Claus, really,” said Masi. “The hockey mask alone is now just a symbol of what Jason is in terms of the pop culture lexicon. While considering Jason’s legacy, the 30th anniversary of the first film and the reboot film coming out, we just knew the timing was right...

I'm a pretty big fan of documentaries as not only do they bring back some incredible memories, but they provide new information for the die hard fan or people looking to learn more about the topic at hand. For the past year, Robert Galluzzo - who runs horror website Icons Of Fright - has been producing an extensive documentary on the Psycho franchise titled The Psycho Legacy. Today the site hosts 12 minutes of footage, which covers all four Psycho films and features Psycho alumni Hilton Green, Tom Holland, Andrew London, Jeff Fahey, Lee Garlington, Katt Shea, Donovan Scott, Kurt Paul, as well as filmmakers Adam Green, Dave Parker, Joe Lynch and many, many more. Read on to watch it or click the link below. Watch for more as it comes in.
