Last week, it was announced that Briana Middleton (Sharper) will be starring in the Apple TV series Metropolis, created by Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail and inspired by the 1927 sci-fi classic directed by Fritz Lang. Now Variety reports that a key supporting role has gone to Lindy Booth, who may be best known for playing the role of Cassandra Cillian on 42 episodes of The Librarians.
Based on a novel by Thea Von Harbou, Metropolis was set in a futuristic urban dystopia and followed the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master. Plot details for the TV series are being kept under wraps.

No, there won’t be any more Inbetweeners. But what else would you like to ask the Friday Night Dinner actor and Days of the Bagnold Summer director?
There’s a lot more to Simon “Will from The Inbetweeners” Bird than meets the eye. As he’s said himself, he’ll probably never quite get away from his role at the posh one with the briefcase in three Channel 4 series and two films of Iain Morris and Damon Beesley’s teenage-angst-ridden sitcom. Although he had a damn good try as slightly less annoying son, Adam, in six series of Channel 4’s gone, but not forgotten, Friday Night Dinner.
Bird made his West End debut in 2017’s The Philanthropist with Charlotte “Ghosts” Ritchie, Lily Cole, Tom Rosenthal and Matt “Toast of London” Berry. In a three-star review, the Guardian’s Michael Billington described Bird’s performance as: “Funny rather than sad.

Exclusive: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has a warrant out, in a manner of speaking, for Broadway actors. Next week’s episode features Tony-nominated Hadestown actor Eva Noblezada and Beetlejuice himself Alex Brightman, and showrunner Warren Leight tells Deadline that’s just the beginning.
Last night, after the episode casting was announced, Leight tweeted, “We are trying to hire every Broadway actor we can while we and they wait for the curtains to rise again.” And he wasn’t joking.
“We know how hard the community has been hit here,” Leight said in an interview. “The goal is to get as many jobs to as many theater actors as we possibly can.”
The offer couldn’t come at a more opportune time. The National Endowment for the Arts recently released figures indicating that while the overall unemployment rate has averaged 8.5 percent, the average among actors was 52 percent.
The NBC New York-based L&o franchise has long been known as a steady source of employment for the city’s theater performers – rare is the stage actor whose Playbill credits don’t include at least one of the L&o series – but the pandemic has pushed Leight’s team to ramp up even those efforts for the current Season 22.
Stage actors already cast in parts for this season include the Tony-winning Adriane Lenox, Elizabeth Marvel, Jane Bruce (Jagged Little Pill), Jelani Alladin (Disney’s Frozen), Michael Mastro (Love! Valour! Compassion!), and Betsy Aidem (Steel Magnolias).
Even Raúl Esparza, a four-time Tony nominee known to the wider TV audience for his six-season Svu run as Assistant D.A. Rafael Barba, is making a temporary franchise comeback to reprise the role for this week’s episode “Sightless in a Savage Land.”
Leight says the Broadway-filled roles range in scope from one-day parts to more substantial turns, but have an important practical impact for the actors, adding to the work day minimums required for Actors Equity-Broadway League health insurance.
The casting offers a significant logistical benefit to the show as well: casting New York actors is the more practical and efficient option during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the prospect of long-distance flights from Hollywood and required quarantine protocols can complicate using Los Angeles-based actors.
“In the past we’ve done what you could call Hollywood stunt casting,” Leight says, “but a lot of those players aren’t going to be willing to get on a plane and quarantine right now. We realized early on that we’ll have to cast locally much more.”
The Broadway shutdown also allows the show to get around the planning issues that Broadway’s usual performance schedule demands: Coordinating a shoot around the identical eight-performance weeks of working stage actors like Noblezada and Brightman (who Leight says enact “a horribly failed virtual romance” in the Jan. 14 episode) is daunting. There’s only so much guest-starring that can be crammed into a dark Broadway Monday.
Yet another plus for the production: Stage actors, accustomed to the tightrope walk of eight shows a week, are what Leight calls “money players,” guest stars who “hit their marks and can do it over and over” quickly. With pandemic safety precautions enforced on set – minimal personal contact, Covid testing, noisy stop-and-start ventilation, among other things – the production, he says, “doesn’t have time for actors who need to find it.”
“Our directors need to know that [guest actors] can do two scenes with Olivia and not be nervous,” he adds, referring to star Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson character.
Leight himself has an extensive stage background, including his 1998 Tony-winning Best Play Side Man, a Pulitzer finalist that starred the Tony-winning Frank Wood.
And yes, Wood will be popping up on Svu this season. Leight says Svu‘s medical examiners office has been “augmented” to include a role for his old friend.
Leight’s Tuesday night tweet was met with a quick response from New York stage actors. Jennifer Mudge, whose Broadway and Off Broadway credits include Into The Woods, Rocky and The Philanthropist, tweeted, “Warren, I feel like now is the time to tell you that only Svu is missing from my L&o trifecta completion. (Mothership twice!),” to which Leight responded, “On it.”
Three-time Tony nominee Carolee Carmello tweeted a simple, “Much appreciated,” while West Side Story actor Danny Wolohan wrote, “Broadway’s Officer Krupke says thank you!”
And Chris Orbach – actor, writer, musician and, as the son of the late Jerry Orbach, a member of an L&o royal family – weighed in. “God love you,” he responded to Leight’s tweet. “You cats are good like that.”
Law & Order: Svu, from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, airs Thursdays at 9 pm on NBC.
Thank you, @warrenleightTV! My last L&o stint was an episode staring John Ritter! I think it's time I came back for a visit! ❤️

Showtime has tapped Tom Fontana, creator of “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Oz” to serve as showrunner for its upcoming drama starring Kevin Bacon, “City on a Hill.”
The Boston-set drama is based on an original idea by Ben Affleck, who will executive produce the drama with his buddy and fellow New England-er Matt Damon.
The series is set in early 1990s Boston, rife with violent criminals emboldened by local law enforcement agencies in which corruption and racism was the norm. In this fictional account, assistant district attorney Decourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge) arrives from Brooklyn and forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran, Jackie Rohr (Bacon). Together, they take on a family of armored car robbers from Charlestown in a case that grows to involve, and ultimately subvert, the entire criminal justice system of Boston.

In my defense, said hairline is the subject of the very first bit of dialogue in Hap and Leonard‘s series premiere (airing Wednesday at 10/9c)… and it’s conceivable that the series had pulled a Pete-on-Mad-Men and shaved Purefoy’s locks away for the part.
“Oh f—k no,” he says good-naturedly, laughing as I slowly die of embarrassment on the other end of the phone line.

“As soon as I read it, I recognized that guy,” exclaimed James Purefoy about his role as a blue collar East Texas man whose luck could turn for the better in the upcoming Sundance TV ’80s-set Hap And Leonard. The former Rome actor stopped by Deadline’s studio in Park City to talk about the new drama series premiering March 2. In our chat, Purefoy talks about how he was hooked into the show by his friend and former costar of NBC’s The Philanthropist Michael Kenneth…...

TNT’s The Librarians shot out of the gates, and how could it not, and the network has finally announced a renewal.
Considering the numbers, this isn’t exactly a surprise. According to their own statement, it was the #2 basic cable show of the year, so bringing it back probably isn’t anything that fans were worried about… except that it kept not happening.
It isn’t actually a long time since the first season ended, but by today’s standards, it has been a bit of an odd wait. The delay is perhaps a hint at some behind-the-scenes uncertainty over contracts and schedules, especially in the case of Noah Wyle, who both is and isn’t a regular feature of the show, and who has other shows to do.
At any rate, you can rest easy. And, look for your chance to catch the show, if you haven’t already,...

The works of William Shakespeare are coming to TV, courtesy of Johnny Depp and "Copper" and "Homicide" producer Tom Fontana.
Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, and Fontana are working with Swedish company Yellow Bird Productions (which is behind the original adaptations of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and its sequels) on the project, Deadline reports. Writer Randall Fontana (no relation to Tom) will pen the script.
It's not clear how the series will be structured, or how it will use the source material. Deadline describes the project this way: "a modern take on the plays of The Bard, building on the existing characters and plots from several of his most notable plays."
That could mean ... almost anything, really. Adaptations of the plays in a contemporary setting? Shakespeare characters transported to the present day? Romeo and Hamlet teaming up to fight crime? It's apparently all on the table.

Check out the first image of Lindy Booth (Dawn of the Dead) as Night Bitch. It's a behind-the-scenes photo featuring the convenience store that Christopher Mintz-Plasse was seen filming scenes with a handgun, presumably robbing the store. Even though she is in costume and there in the set, there is no reason to believe she actually was apart of this scene. In Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book Night Bitch is a member of the superhero team, Justice Forever. She was inspired to become a hero by Kick-Ass's heroics, and joins the group to avenge the murder of her sister. Booth has dipped her toes in television with NBC's The Philanthropist and ABC's October Road, but it's her featured roles that most people will recognize her from. She was in such movies as Dawn of the Dead, Wrong Turn and Jeff Wadlow's Cry Wolf. Image...

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Lindy Booth (The Philanthropist) is set to join the cast of Kick-Ass 2 as 'Night Bitch'. Booth previously worked with writer/director Jeff Wadlow on thriller, Cry Wolf. A member of "Justice Forever", the character doesn't have a particularly large role in the Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. series, but is one of the superheroes inspired by 'Kick-Ass' and the rise of the other heroes. She claims that the main driving force behind what she does was the murder of her sister, who was found in a dumpster. As you can see from the image below, the beautiful actress certainly looks the part, and she joins an already very impressive ensemble cast.

Or whatever they end up calling Robocop’s partner in MGM’s upcoming reboot, it probably won’t be Officer Anne Lewis, since the actor currently in negotiations to saddle up with the future of law-enforcement cyborg is “Boardwalk Empire’s” Michael Kenneth Williams. He, uh, does not exactly fit the Anne Lewis mold. Williams, who counts stints on “The Philanthropist” and “Community” among his credits, is currently in talks to play “the partner…who is tight with [Alex] Murphy’s family.” Alex Murphy, of course, is the hotshot Detroit city cop who gets gunned down on the job, and is resurrected as an unstoppable, well, robot cop. Williams will join a cast that already includes Joel Kinnaman as the titular hero, with Hugh Laurie as the man who will menace him and Detroit. Also in the cast are Samuel L. Jackson as a media mogul, Gary Oldman as a scientist,...

ABC executives have been mostly mum about the late-season arrival of James Purefoy, the hunky British actor who joins the cast of Revenge as the show returns from hiatus on April 18.
It was announced in January that Purefoy would portray Dominik Wright, the mysterious old flame of the show's cunning matriarch, Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe), but though producer Mike Kelley has called Dominik "an artist," that's about all we know about him. Purefoy has not yet given interviews about his role -- as far as I know -- possibly because he's swamped. He's also preparing to play a serial killer opposite Kevin Bacon in a high-profile Fox pilot, scheduled for the 2012-2013 season. This means that Dominik's wooing of La Grayson may be short and sweet -- or spicy and not so sweet -- spanning just a few episodes. Even though the most cynical of critics will tell you that the western is dead, cable viewers and more importantly, AMC thought differently. The cable network that successfully launched Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead gave Hell on Wheels a second season to continue its tale of the Transcontinental Railroad during the Reconstruction era of the United States.
Hell on Wheels fit right in with AMC’s other original scripted dramas, featuring a complex knot of longer, drawn-out serialized narratives instead of quicker, stand-alone stories. It looks at the massive good and bad that the train brought including the greed and corruption; it sheds light on the less than smooth transition for the emancipated slaves and the ever-changing climate of the immigrant.

As if the scope of AMC dramas weren't epic enough between meth labs, '60s advertising and the zombie apocalypse, now we're going back to the old west.
Today AMC debuts the first trailer from its forthcoming western epic Hell On Wheels, which tells the story of a former Confederate soldier seeking revenge on the Union troops who killed his family, set against the backdrop of the post-Civil War construction of the first Transcontinental railroad. Barry Levinson's body of work through the last decade has been nothing short of eclectic, with television series like The Philanthropist alongside filmmaking satires (What Just Happened?).* Now the director is jumping into a found footage genre flick called The Bay, which has been picked up for distribution by Lionsgate. It seems the movie was formerly at Alliance Films (under the name Isopod, no less), featuring a cast of relative unknowns in what seems like an eco horror movie about the spread of a parasite that will somehow bring down a small Maryland town. The big question is will this be something in the Outbreak/Cabin Fever spectrum or more along the lines of 28 Days Later/The Crazies? With no release date, trailer, or art,...

Lets face it, as television viewers we grow attached to the gay characters that resonate with us on the small screen, and with the actors that bring life to these roles. We also find ourselves growing fond of out-and-proud actors that have opted to play it straight thats why its called acting, people and vice versa.
So when their shows are cancelled or taken off the air before they wear out their welcome (whatever, I still miss Sex and the City on Sunday nights, ok?), it can be a little bit difficult to see them slide into other TV roles easier than Lindsay Lohan checking into another rehab (Im rootin for you, girl).
Alas, sometimes that isnt always the case, which might have you asking yourself, Where are they now? In some cases for these actors, it could be taken as a query of, Where did they disappear to?
But for curiosity's (and manner's) sake,...

Sam Mendes ("Revolutionary Road," "American Beauty"), BBC Worldwide and Canal Plus will team to produce the eight-episode TV drama series "Grand Hotel" says Variety.
The story revolves around the guests and staff of a ritzy international hotel in Paris who are suddenly taken hostage. Held captive in the lap of luxury, they try to find out why they're being held prisoner, and plan to escape.
Richard McBrien ("Wallander, "Spooks") and Virginie Brac ("Spiral") are penning the scripts. Mendes will produce but not direct.

AMC has greenlit a full season of the TV series Hell on Wheels, which was written and created by Joe and Tony Gayton. This is the same station that gave us Mad Men and The Walking Dead.
The series tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The series examines the railroad's institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time, Hell on Wheels chronicles this potent turning point in our nation's history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

Michael J. Bassett’s “Solomon Kane”, based on the fictitious Robert E. Howard character, is a movie I’ve been following for a while. What can I say, the premise and idea behind the character, a lesser creation by Howard compared to his more famous Conan, appeals to me. After some delays, including a lackluster showing at Comic Con, the film was dumped into European theaters in early 2010, but as of this review has yet to find its way Stateside. The movie has been playing various film festivals around the States, but it’s looking increasingly likely that the film will never find a major theatrical run. The best case scenario, then, is a limited release followed by a major release on DVD and, as is the fashion nowadays, video-on-demand. So why the glum reception, Solomon Kane? James Purefoy (late of TV’s promising “The Philanthropist”) plays the titular character,...

Welcome to your Tuesday morning television briefing. Given that it's the day after a Us holiday, there are precious few headlines this morning but here's what we've got. TVGuide.com's Natalie Abrams is reporting that Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica) has been cast as a guest star on ABC's sci-fi drama V. Trucco is set to appear in the April 13th episode as the enigmatic John May, the leader of the Fifth Column, a group of rebel Visitors who have been plotting to overthrow the leadership of the alien race. (TVGuide.com) A slew of pilot castings: Amy Smart (Scrubs) has been cast in CBS' untitled medical drama from executive producer John Wells (ER) and writer Hannah Shakespeare (The Philanthropist) about a mobile medical team that travels the Us and helps those less fortunate yet in need of serious medical attention. Smart will play Meg Cooper, "a tough nurse who stands...

One of my favorite things to do in Seriously Random Lists, inexplicably, is to look back at forgotten actors and actresses who, inexplicably, fell into the cracks of the Hollywood studio system and, essentially, disappeared -- I call it the Rae Dawn Chong Effect (formerly the Shelley Long Effect). We're dealing here with only a decade in time, so most of these names -- I suspect -- will still be familiar to most of you, and a few of them still exist on the fringes. But if you compare where they were during the first half of the decade with where they ended up, it's clear that the Rae Dawn Chong Effect has taken hold, and soon they, too, will completely fall into the rabbit hole, never to be seen again, except in straight-to-dvd offerings and as patients in medical dramas.

For the longest time, I've kvetched about the fact that the television industry has stopped programming for Saturday night. For years, Saturday was a great night of television. I remember M*A*S*H and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, not to mention guilty pleasures like The Facts of Life and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Even NBC's thrillogy, The Pretender and Profiler were fun. All those shows were Saturday night hits (some bigger than others).
Well, I'm not alone in missing Saturday TV; Oscar-winner Barry Levinson feels the same. Levinson is also a TV producer -- he did Homicide: Life on the Street and The Philanthropist -- and he thinks the networks are making a big mistake by not seizing on Saturday primetime. He knows the business pretty well and he's confused by the networks' strategy.
"I don't think the answer is to retreat," he told the New York Daily News.

NBC's not being very charitable to fans of their summer series, The Philanthropist. The feel-good drama has been cancelled.
The Philanthropist revolves around Teddy Rist (James Purefoy), a once-selfish billionaire who decides to channel his money and power to help those in need. The series also features the talents of Jesse L. Martin, Neve Campbell, Michael Kenneth William, Lindy Booth, Krista Allen, and James Albrecht.
For a summer show, the drama did pretty well in the ratings initially. But, as the weeks wore on, the numbers fell off. NBC stuck with it and ran all eight episodes, with the last one airing on August 12th. Though it looked unlikely that the show would be renewed, many viewers have been holding out hope. The network didn't make an announcement about the show's fate but they rarely do.

Writer Bryan Fuller (“Pushing Daisies”) breathes needed life into NBC’s science fiction series, “Heroes,” this week by digging deeper into the personal lives of Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) and Tracy (Ali Larter). Of course, there’s bound to be lots of skeletons buried in the closets of these two alpha types, enough to satisfy the dramatic requirements of any good TV serial. Nathan now recalls that his family covered up a girlfriend’s accidental death and wiped his memory. He now remembers what happened only because he is actually Sylar, the shapeshifter. Tracy, on the other hand, wants her job working for Gov. Malden (Bruce Boxleitner) back, but she somehow forgot that part of her job description requires tending to her boss’ sexual needs. Once her employment duties become clear to her again, she ditches the job. ...

Neve Campbell will be joining her Scream costars, David Arquette and Courteney Cox, on Scream 4.
Rumors were spreading earlier this year that Campbell, who starred as Sidney Prescott, the main sucker from Scream, Scream 2, When Will I Be Loved and Scream 3, will return to the role that made her a smidgen more famous than when she was just on Party of Five.
Her schedule has freed up since the cancellation of her NBC summer show, The Philanthropist.
Earlier this summer, screenwriter Kevin Williamson suggested that Campbell had said “F*cketh no” for a fourth go on Scream and posted the following on his Twitter page:
Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won’t do it. This sucks. #overdonemovies
Wes Craven is reportedly in talks to helm the project but is awaiting Williamson’s script.
The next film, which is looked on to be a full-reboot of the series,...

Another of NBC's new Summer series, The Philanthropist, got off to a moderately successful start in the ratings but has been losing steam quickly. Should NBC show some charity and keep it around or should they just cancel it already?
The Philanthropist tells the story of Teddy Rist (James Purefoy), a billionaire playboy who is haunted by the death of his only child. After rescuing a young boy from a hurricane, Rist begins using his wealth to help those in need. The show also features the talents of Jesse L. Martin, Neve Campbell, Michael K. Williams, Lindy Booth, Bonnie Henna, Dominique McElligott, and James Albrecht.
The drama premiered on June 24th and attracted an average of 7.41 million viewers and a 2/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. For a Summer series, that looks like pretty decent performance on the surface but less so when you look at the specifics.

If you haven’t seen NBC’s summer drama The Philanthropist, you aren’t alone. The ratings aren’t great and aren’t getting any better, even for a show debuting in the summer. Besides the bad timing of the program’s release and promotion, the bad writing, and the predictable and exponentially limiting episode-to-episode structure, I believe the show is failing to connect with audiences who, for a host of reasons, can’t identify with and aren’t interested in seeing a weekly show about a selfless and generous billionaire, and I don’t blame them. Based loosely on the life story of Bobby Sager, The Philanthropist is about wealthy socialite Teddy Rist (James Purefoy) and his decision to utilize his wealth, power, and sway to make the world into a better place—one non-American country at a time—after a revelatory experience saving a boy from drowning during a Hurricane in Nigeria. The Philanthropist...
