The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Coherence centres on eight friends enjoying a very grown up, suburban dinner party. A comet is passing by Earth and changes to the atmosphere are making some of them jumpy and uncomfortable. An unexplainable shattered iPhone screen is an early warning sign that something unusual is coming their way. During what seems like the longest night, their real lives, jarred by this astronomical anomaly, are confronted with multiple, alternative realities of themselves.
Their problems start with a power cut and the intriguing sight of just one house in the entire neighbourhood that still has its lights on. Two of the dinner party go and investigate. When they return one has a cut on his head and doesn’t want to talk about what he’s seen.

Ryan Reynolds, Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson and Scott Speedman star in the powerful new trailer for A24 Films’ The Captive.

When Vulture spoke with Sean Astin earlier this week about the events of last night’s episode of The Strain, he admitted that our question about whether he saw a thematic connection between the FX horror drama, which involves concentration-camp flashbacks, and Number the Stars, the Lois Lowry novel he has been developing that uses the Holocaust as a backdrop, “made my brain hurt.” (The short answer? There really isn’t one.) [Warning: Spoilers up through last night’s episode of The Strain to follow.] Perhaps the 43-year-old actor was merely suffering sympathy pains with Jim Kent, his character on The Strain, who experienced a massive, fatal headache last night after being shot point blank in the temple by badass exterminator Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand)? The mercy killing was imperative, of course, as the Cdc lackey had been infected by the show’s CGI parasites, which quickly turn their hosts into icky vampires. Just...

You may recall back in 2009 the news story about a young 22 year old man named Oscar Grant who was shot by a police officer in a train station in an out-of-control situation that was actually caught on camera by on-lookers on their cell phones. These videos were shown by numerous news stations and made their way across the internet.
The story is a sad one, a tragic one, and one that it is impossible to watch unfold without becoming emotional and feeling angry, yet this film is important and director, Ryan Coogler, does a commendable job, especially when one takes into consideration that this is Coogler’s first feature film. We follow the final day in the life of Oscar, played with conviction by star-in-the-making Michael B.

One of the surprise treats of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival is low-key sci-fi thriller, Coherence: the sort of film where walking in with no expectations is the best way to approach things (but please do keep reading this review).
James Ward Byrkit‘s feature follows a group of old friends whose dinner party is cut short by a power outage, thought to have been caused by the passing of a comet that night. Part of the group ventures across the street to the one remaining house with power where they discover the full psychological horror of their predicament.

Biblical epics were once a staple of the old school Hollywood. Movies like Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments were the big budget blockbusters of their day. It appears they are making somewhat of a comeback with Exodus being scheduled for release later this year and the recent release of Darren Aronofsky’s latest film Noah.
With Aronofsky at the helm there is little doubt this adaptation will not be a straightforward one, and in fact his Noah has a closer resemblance to 80’s Fantasy than a Sunday School story. Considering the source material his vision will certainly stir some controversy. Beyond those basic implications is the question of do those drastic changes provide a new valuable insight to...

Movies can be a place where we can discharge from the trials and tribulations of reality for a few short hours. Entertaining the masses is a motive that is certainly worth achieving, but there are times when films attempt a higher purpose. Just when black America is up in arms over the George Zimmerman verdict, along comes first time Director Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station to fan the flames. It’s about an unarmed young black man shot by a white cop, a true incident that resulted in protests and riots in San Francisco a couple of years ago. Fruitvale Station is impressive for a debut film, and is admirable in its intent to involve the audience in the human story behind the headlines. It’s been hailed as a powerful, harrowing and emotionally devastating piece of filmmaking by some but for the life of me, I cannot begin to understand why. It’s a solid film and well-acted but bogged down by a meandering, rambling and dull first hour….and for a film that only runs 85 minutes, that’s a big problem!

Back for a fifth installment (who knew the series would last his long?), Resident Evil Retribution continues the story of Alice and her battle against the Umbrella Corporation.
Now I’ll admit, the Resident Evil franchise lost me after the second film so revisiting the series for the fifth film may not have been such a good idea… But the opening sequence got me up to speed pretty quickly with a re-cap of everything that had come before – including a seemingly out of place rehash of the original film, a rehash which would however foretell the return of the Red Queen!

The 2013 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 17-27 and today the fest unveiled their competition slates including film in the Dramatic, Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, Word Cinema Documentary and Next competitions. As always, these lineups are incredibly hard to predict, but amid this group there are a few interesting titles. The Dramatic competition includes Jill Soloway's Afternoon Delight, a dark comedy starring Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor and Jane Lynch that centers on a L.A. housewife who hires a stripper as a live-in nanny. I had not heard of David Lowery's Ain't Them Bodies Saints, but a cast that includes Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Nate Parker and Keith Carradine is immediately appealing, while the plot compares itself to Terrence Malick's Badlands and Bonnie & Clyde telling a story of Bob Muldoon and Ruth Guthrie, two young outlaws who are brought down by the authorities in the hills of Texas.

Cosmopolis
Stars: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon,Paul Giamatti, Kevin Durand, Abdul Ayoola, Samantha Morton | Written and Directed by David Cronenberg
What does the man who has everything want? If you ask him he’ll say he has it. Then if you think what has he to lose? And the answer is everything. Cosmopolis is an examination of a man who is invincible in his own little world, he has calculated everything to perfection, he is a god, a master of the universe, but as we know all Gods can fall from grace. What happens when the incalculable happens? When the universe decides not to behave how it should? What happens to the man who has nothing at all?
Eric Packer is at the top of his game, worth billions which means that in today’s society he is invincible he is part of the normality, being driven...

“You have an asymmetrical prostate”,. a doctor intones after examining natty billionaire fund manager Eric Packer in David Cronenberg’s newest film Cosmopolis. The peculiar thing about this declaration is that Packer is in his stretch limousine when the doctor’s fingers are in his rectum, and that he’s played by Robert Pattinson in a role that may be a tough sell to his legion of puzzled Twilight devotees. This adaptation of Don DeLillo’s satirical novel mostly takes place in that limo, a travelling vessel which provides all of Packer’s needs: computer access, food, vodka, sex, even a toilet. Cosmopolis is a kinky and provocative portrait of loneliness and alienation in a wealthy corporate world where words like loyalty and love have lost all meaning. . Not for everyone, Cosmopolis is a challenging and dense movie but also self-indulgent, plotless, and for most moviegoers it will likely be a chore to sit through.

Over the past decade, notorious and beloved director David Cronenberg took a curious turn in his filmmaking career: he became normal. (Though anyone who tries to label his lot of ‘00s films like “A History of Violence,” “Eastern Promises,” or even “A Dangerous Method” as "normal" is most certainly speaking in relative terms.) While he may not be exploding heads “Scanners”-style, or exploring the depraved life of a smarmy TV executive with a lust for violent programming in “Videodrome,” Cronenberg has still managed to put his own twisted spin on all three of those ‘00s films, from the family drama in 'History' to the biopic-like nature of 'Method.' With his adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel “Cosmopolis,” which follows a 28-year-old billionaire’s stretch limo ride across Manhattan that soon turns into a warped odyssey that tears apart his own world, it looks as if Cronenberg is returning...

Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis Robert Pattinson, the star of David Cronenberg's upcoming Cosmopolis, to join the director on another project? Pattinson's fans have been abuzz on Twitter about the possibility of the actor being cast opposite Viggo Mortensen in Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars. The source for that info is an article posted at The Tracking Board, which doesn't provide any sources whatsoever. I couldn't find any other information — let alone any confirmation — that Maps to the Stars is indeed in the works. Well, apart from news from 2006, when the project was initially announced. As per The Tracking Board, Maps to the Stars tells the story of a couple of child actors ruined by Hollywood stardom. Back in 2006, Time Out described the Bruce Wagner-written film as a "dark Hollywood thriller," quoting Cronenberg as saying, "Hollywood is a world that is seductive and repellent at the same time, and...

Real Steel
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie | Written by John Gatins | Directed by Shawn Levy
A film about robots fighting each other that’s both vaguely tolerable and not in 3D? Not on your nelly! At least that’s what I would have said, posed with that question prior to seeing Real Steel. I am pleased to report that director Shawn Levy’s latest effort is a surprisingly decent little film that may well go some way in setting right the bad name CGI-robot-battle-fests have been given recently.
Set in a near future world where regular puny human boxing has been superseded by exciting, no-holds-barred robot rumbles, former pugilist Hugh Jackman tests his mettle – or ‘metal’, if you will – fighting (via remote control) in the non-league robot boxing circuit.
After a few mishaps, a lot of lost cash and whole pile of broken robot parts,...

Real Steel
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie | Written by John Gatins | Directed by Shawn Levy
Stepping away from his usual genre, Shawn Levy tries really hard to change how he is perceived as a filmmaker with robot-boxing movie, Real Steel. Set in the near future, the sport of boxing has evolved into robots fighting, rather than humans. Charlie (Jackman), and his 11 year-old son, Max (Goyo), find a robot in a junk yard, and repair and modify it to make it worthy of competing in the World Robot Boxing championship.
There is a lot of back-story that the audience is expected to just assume. There’s no story to how the sport evolved, or what happened to Charlie when it did. We are briefly told how he was a great boxer, and defeated the number 2 Champion in the world, but we’re not shown anything.

Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richards army against the French. Upon Richards death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion, a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest.
