DreamWorks Animation is committing to “subverting the hero’s journey,” said president Margie Cohn at Annecy, introducing “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” and “Orion and the Dark.”
One of the big U.S. world premieres at Annecy, the world’s biggest animation festival, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” featured at a DreamWorks Animation studio focus at Annecy, the world’s biggest animation festival.
“DreamWorks has a long tradition of taking an unlikely hero, like a chubby panda or an ogre with a heart of gold, and subverting your expectations. We will take what you think might be an evil sea monster and convince you she is actually the hero,” “Ruby Gillman” producer, Kelly Cooney Cilella, added.
Commenting also on the company’s long list of strong female characters, from Princess Fiona to Princess Poppy from “Trolls, she added that “We think Ruby is next. And this time, she is in the title.

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix will pair on “Orion and The Dark,” a CG family comedy written by Charlie Kaufman and based on a 2014 book by Emma Yarlett. Animator Sean Charmatz will mark his feature debut with this darkly whimsical tale about a young boy confronting his greatest terror.
That boy is Orion (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), an elementary schooler and full-time fraidy cat unnerved by heights, spooked by domestic animals, and rendered nearly catatonic by that worst plight of all – the dark. Only one night the Dark (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser) just about has enough, so he takes Orion on a nocturnal adventure to show the boy there’s nothing to fear but fear itself.
DreamWorks Animation is set to announced the title onstage at the Annecy Animation Festival on Tuesday at a studio focus. It will screen three excerpts of a project already well underway. Netflix will release...

When is time not on the side of any Cannes film premiere?
Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s About Dry Grasses, which had its world premiere Friday night, follows the middle-class melancholy of a Turkish rural village art teacher, clocks in at 3 hours and 17 minutes. So far, the movie is one of few weighing in at the 3-hour-plus stretch; the other, premiering Saturday, being Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon at 3 hours and 26 minutes.
However, Ceylan said today at the his film’s Cannes press conference that he could have made his snow-laden epic so much longer.
“The film could have continued on for a very long time,” Ceylan told the press.
About Dry Glasses follows Samet, whose school is an area where there’s essentially two seasons: snow and yellow grass. In his humdrum existence, he becomes fascinated by a young female student, Sevim, who he tries to mentor...

Nuri Bilge Ceylan loves snow. The depths of winter, people in thick coats, frozen taps, the sense that these long, bitterly cold seasons in mountain regions will never end. This is all working material for the Turkish master whose Winter Sleep won the Palme d’Or in 2014. “What am I doing here?” is the regular moan from Samet (Deniz Celiloglu), the art teacher in the village school in About Dry Grasses.
Meaning: what is a man of the world doing teaching potato farmers’ children how to draw a horse? Why is he in this desolate country with two seasons that turn over so quickly that once the snow melts, the buried yellow grass almost immediately is turned brown by the fierce summer sun? Even the grass has no chance in life: It’s unbearable. It’s like him, he muses in a rare voice-over, condemned by circumstance to insignificance.

Every day that passes, we’re hopefully closer to the thing Stephen King that King notoriously hated – didn’t set the box office alight, putting paid to several planned spin-offs, there may be a future for those characters on the big screen yet.
That’s because, as he tells the Script Apart podcast sees a way of bringing the Doctor Sleep characters into his take on The Dark Tower – sure to make up for having to abandon his Dick Hallorann origin story plans. “The thing about the King universe is, it’s all connected. London, March 14 (Ians) Wearing an eye mask can potentially enhance cognitive functions of the brain as it blocks ambient light while we sleep, suggests a study.
Sleep is crucial for alertness and for preparing the human brain to encode new information. However, ambient light, like an outdoor street light shining through your window, can influence sleep structure and timing.
The study, published in the journal Sleep, showed that wearing an eye mask blocks light during night sleep and improves memory and alertness.
“Our findings suggest that wearing an eye mask during overnight sleep can improve episodic encoding and alertness the next day,” wrote Viviana Greco, from School of Psychology at University of Cardiff, along with other researchers in the paper.
The team conducted two experiments to understand how sleep masks help.
In the first experiment, 94 people in the age group of 18-35 wore an eye mask while they slept every...

Sleep Token have announced a new album, titled Take Me Back to Eden. In advance of the album’s May 19th release, the UK experimental metal act has shared the new single and video “Vore.”
The mysterious band has amassed a viral following via a string of recent singles. The track “The Summoning” alone has more than 16 million global streams, thanks in part to a co-sign by pop superstar Demi Lovato, who shared a Spotify link to the song with her 140-plus million Instagram followers.
Often tagged as “alternative metal,” Sleep Token transcend that somewhat generic labeling, combining djent, Deftones-y melodic metal, and progressive pop. The new single “Vore” is a strong example of this multi-faceted sound.
Much of Sleep Token’s allure comes from their reclusiveness. “Sleep Token notoriously do not speak to the press,” reads the press release for Take Me Back to Eden. And the cloaked central...

Warner Bros. had high expectations for Doctor Sleep, director Mike Flanagan’s 2019 sequel to the classic The Shining. Such high expectations, they even hired Flanagan to write a prequel to the film that would center on the character Dick Hallorann, who was played by Scatman Crothers in The Shining and Carl Lumbly in Doctor Sleep. But then Doctor Sleep was released to underwhelming box office and the prequel Hallorann was scrapped. Yesterday, a fan poster for a Hallorann-centric Shining film caught Flanagan’s eye and inspired him to tweet, “We were So Close. I’ll always regret this didn’t happen. Because of Doctor Sleep’s box office performance, Warner Bros opted not to proceed with it. They control the rights, so that was that.“
Collider also shared a quote from a 2020 CinemaBlend interview with Flanagan in which he said, “Hallorann was always more about Dick as a younger man learning about the shining.

Toronto, Sep 8 (Ians) Older people suffering from insomnia are at greater risk of developing memory decline and long-term cognitive impairment like dementia, says a new study.
The study indicated that they are also more likely to show greater prevalence of anxiety, depression, daytime sleepiness, have breathing interruptions during sleep, other sleep-related issues, smoking and a greater body mass index (BMI) score.
“We found that insomnia specifically was related to worse memory performance compared to those who have just some insomnia symptoms or no sleep problems at all,” said researcher Nathan Cross, from the Concordia University, Montreal in Canada.
“This deficit in memory was specific, as we also looked at other cognitive function domains such as attention span and multi-tasking. We only found differences in memory,” he added.
For the study, published in the journal Sleep, the team evaluated data from about 26,000 participants aged between 45 and 85. Resultantly, the subjects were grouped...

We've known for well over a year that Spike Lee would be presiding over the competition jury. And last week he became the first Jury President (that we know of) to ever be the poster star of the festival in the year he was jurying. How about that? People will also be excited to hear that the competition jury is majority women but that's not a first. It's actually the third time. Isabelle Huppert led a majority female jury in 2009 (White Ribbon won the Palme that year) and Jane Campion led a majority female jury in 2014 (Winter Sleep won).

Darren Lynn Bousman was ready for a change. Between 2005 and 2007, he directed three sequels to the “Saw” franchise, all of which topped the box office on their opening weekends, before he turned 30. He spent the next decade parlaying that success into passion projects, like his gonzo musical “Repo! The Genetic Opera” and a Japanese horror series that he produced, but traditional filmmaking started to feel a little played out.
“I became desensitized to making movies,” he said over Zoom this month from his home in Los Angeles. “Everyone is so distracted. We live with a computer in our hands. I have a 100-inch TV but when I’m watching movies on it, I’m on my phone checking Instagram and Twitter, going to make coffee. You’re never truly present.”

The jury ruled in favour of the film by Brandon Cronenberg, as well as awarding trophies to Sleep and Teddy, while the audience and critics honoured The Swarm by Just Philippot. Organised online, the 28th Gérardmer International Fantasy Film Festival has crowned as its winner the British co-production Possessor (unveiled in last year’s Sundance) by Canadian director Brandon Cronenberg. Presided over by Bertrand Bonello, the jury awarded the film its Grand Prize, as well as the trophy for Best Original Score (for Jim Williams). Two additional prizes were won by Sleep by Germany’s Michael Venus and Teddy by French directors Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma. Significantly, French director Just...
Zeynep Dadak has won the Eurimages Co-production Development Award, while the Post Production Award was split between Kalev and Nuucha. This year, the 19th edition of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event ran entirely online, and 57 projects were presented in its various sections. The industry section of the Black Nights Film Festival wrapped on Thursday 26 November with its awards ceremony. The biggest prize, the Eurimages Co-production Development Award, valued at €20,000, for the best project among the line-up of 20 that participated in the Baltic Event Co-Production Market, was bestowed upon Electric Sleep, the sophomore feature by Turkish filmmaker Zeynep Dadak, a sci-fi film about a potential future produced by Titus Kreyenberg (unafilm). Princess Diana dancing on stage to Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" might sound like the kind of storyline The Crown would make up for added drama, but it's actually a completely true story! Much to the surprise of her husband and the assorted elites gathered at a Royal Ballet gala, Diana managed to plan, rehearse, and sneak onstage to perform without anyone finding out! Here's how she pulled it off - and how she got mixed reactions.
Princess Diana famously loved dance her entire life. As a child, she took dance lessons, and at one point, she even aspired to be a ballerina, before she grew too tall as a teenager to ever be able to have a professional dance career. Of course, as a member of the aristocracy (and one of the oldest titled families in Britain), she wouldn't have been able to have a career in dance anyway,...

Fans that were expecting a carbon copy of the first season may find themselves a little disappointed with The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is more of a Gothic romance than the relatively straightforward horror of predecessor Hill House, but the second season of Mike Flanagan’s anthology series is every bit as ambitious, complex and ultimately rewarding as the original.
The show has already been dominating Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list and scaring audiences senseless, with many finding themselves unable to sleep after finishing the nine-episode run. Indeed, refitting the concept into an anthology was a genius idea, one that instantly increased the longevity of The Haunting and also gives Flanagan the creative freedom to take subsequent seasons in infinite possible directions.

Selena Gomez will produce a psychological horror film called “Dollhouse” at STXfilms, and she’s also eyeing to star in the project, STXfilms Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson announced Tuesday.
“Dollhouse” is set in the upper echelon of the New York City fashion scene. Though the exact logline is under wraps, it’s in the spirit of Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” with Natalie Portman. Michael Paisley wrote the screenplay.
Gomez will produce through her July Moon Productions banner alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps, who are also coming on board to produce. The producers are now looking for a director for “Dollhouse.”
Patricia Braga of STX will oversee the project with 21 Laps’ Emily Morris.
“Selena’s involvement is an exciting direction for this project. She is supremely talented as both a star and a producer,” Fogelson said in a statement. “Teaming Selena with Shawn and...

Production of Turkish TV dramas has resumed at a steady pace undeterred by coronavirus concerns and, though the hand of censorship is being felt, shows are getting edgier.
While the pandemic forced production to grind to a halt in March, by September almost all producers had started shooting again in Turkey, though “roughly 80% of them have run into some problems with Covid-19 on their teams,” says Ahmet Ziyalar, president and COO of sales and production company Inter Medya.
Inter Medya is close to wrapping the shoot of “Respect” (“Saygi”) a series it is making for Turkish streaming platform BluTV in which the protagonist, played by Nejat Işler (“Winter Sleep”), “is a sociopath obsessed with the idea of respect,” according to the synopsis.
Ziyalar says increasingly Turkish dramas are being made for streamers, which means episodes are getting shorter — 50 minutes, whereas for linear TV the local norm is 90 minutes or more...

Dupuis’ cover of the 2002 track is considerably slower than the original, throwing dark, heavy synths into the mix that make it feel like a B-side to her recent album, Haunted Painting. “And I feel nothing, not brave,” she sings. “It’s a hard day for breathing again.”

The Haunting of Hill House was one of Netflix’s biggest hits of 2018, with the horror show drawing almost universal acclaim from critics and subscribers alike, who binged all ten episodes in short order. While the story was definitively wrapped up, the streaming service knew they had something special on their hands and quickly retrofitted Hill House into the first installment of an anthology series before announcing follow-up The Haunting of Bly Manor.
Creator Mike Flanagan has more than established himself as one of the most unique and talented voices in the genre, and with many of the cast members from Hill House also returning, Bly Manor promises to build on the atmosphere of dread, slow-burning terror and background frights that audiences have come to expect from the man behind Oculus and Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Hollywood seems to churn out Stephen King adaptations at almost the same rate the prolific author writes the source material, and the industry’s recent obsession with his work looks set to continue at pace. With so many King projects hitting our screens in recent times, though, it shouldn’t come as much surprise that a lot of it has been marked with inconsistency.

Breeders episodes 1 and 2: No Sleep and No Places
There are two types of parental confession: those slyly designed to draw attention to an otherwise spotless family lifestyle, and the real ones (‘I would happily boot my baby off Tower Bridge for an hour’s sleep’).
The real ones aren’t a cause for concern because very few if any babies actually get booted off Tower Bridge. It’s just parents letting off steam, because parenting, like nothing else, fills you with steam.
Of late, TV comedy has been bolder about airing the real confessions. A new strand of sitcom no longer depicts childcare as a zany obstacle course, but as the drawn-out existential crisis it really is. Anxiety, frustration, guilt, doubt, selfishness, resentment, competitiveness, more anxiety, more guilt (so much guilt). Catastrophe, Motherhood, There She Goes and now Breeders: less a genre than a mass unburdening of shame. This...
