Puts the "closure" in "full disclosure." Almost!
Carycomic4 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
OK! Right up front, I'll state that my two fellow reviewers are being a tad unfair to Ziva. Her accusation that Gibbs had deserted her is based on the fact that her own biological father _did_ abandon her to die, during her stint as the captive of a Somalian-based terrorist group. The same terrorist group from which she was eventually rescued by Gibbs, McGee, and DiNozzo. Hence, her decision to ultimately resign from Mossad and become a naturalized American citizen.

In short, Gibbs became a new father-figure. One she came to believe would never let her down. But, the fact that he didn't automatically assume she had miraculously escaped that Kort-engineered mortar barrage compounded the sense of loss she was still feeling over the death of her bio-dad, Eli David.

On the other hand, she still felt loyal enough to Gibbs to try and rescue him from that South American narco-terrorist group that he and McGee were taken captive by. I can only assume that the reason she couldn't implement her own escape plan for them, sooner, is that she was still being pursued by Sahar. The biggest misandryist I have seen on this series since the episode that introduced Mike Frank's granddaughter's other grandparent. That widowed Near Eastern tribal leader!

To be fair, though, Gibbs' alleged inability to see the "clues" left behind by Ziva (had he only investigated her Israeli hide-out, personally) is due to something quite legitimate. Post-traumatic stress disorder! The man was still reeling from the loss of Ex-wife Number Two (the recently reconciled Mrs. Fornell) to a sniper's bullet fired by Sergei, Ari Haswari's other half-sibling (and, possibly, Sahar's boyfriend). Add that to Tobias Fornell's daughter (Gibbs' goddaughter) almost fatally overdosing on drugs, and you have Gibbs' emotional baggage rack reaching full capacity!

In short; even the most able-bodied leatherneck is still only human. Something I'm sure that Dr. Jack (Maria Bello's character) would be the first to agree with.

The episode ended with Ziva and Gibbs just about reconciling, themselves. The only plot-thread left dangling is whether or not she goes to reintroduce herself to DiNozzo. If the writers opt to do an episode built around that, they'll have me contributing to its Nielsen ratings in a New York minute! Especially, if they did it as part of a crossover with "Bull" (involving a court-battle for custody of Little Tali).

A bit underwhelming

Warning: Spoilers
"Out of the Darkness" started this season off on a solid note, it was so great to see Ziva back again in a more dark storyline. "Into the Light" sadly takes some steps back. It's not an awful episode, but a mixed bag at best. Watching this entry to the series, I started to understand why people were not that impressed by Ziva's return.

Let's start with the good aspects.

. The production values of the episode are superb. The direction's fine, the music fits the scenery and the performances are compelling. The scenes between Harmon and Cote De Pablo are emotional and very well-handled. Pablo has such a commanding presence.

. The story is for the most part entertaining. Did enjoy couple of neat twists and I did like that the villain was not only after Ziva, because of something that happened in the past.

But...

. Sahar is, at the end of the day, a pretty mediocre villain. Her plan was not all that interesting and I agree with the previous reviewers, who have found the ending of this episode to be too easy. The setup for the villain was better the stuff after it. Sahar could have been a better character if her story was fleshed out, at times it seemed that "Into the Light" was more about people meeting with Ziva than telling a grim mystery.

. Not all of the humor lands. Do agree too that the episode had aspects that have been executed in other better "NCIS" episodes.

Overall, a bit underwhelming episode, but still a mixed bag.

6/10 HK.

Into the Light

Warning: Spoilers
More of the same from this show. Ziva on the run. They tease her working with the bad guys. She isn't. The good guys save the day.

Rinse and repeat with this show. The question is do they continue this run with Ziva or just cut their losses? It has been a let down thus far.

Mike Frank's she is not

Warning: Spoilers
A regular crime of the week is better than this poorly done story. The villain was...I don't know what she was. She was not even confident her plan would work. She just committed suicide along with her friends! In this 2part story only bad guys died! And Ziva was runn6from them? What?! I also felt it so stupid how she says Gibbs should have known she was alive! Why? And then she was in South America saving him killing so that nobody followed them back? Wht nonsense! Ari s brother killed his ex wife recreated Agent Todd s death and tormented him with Jenny s death scene etcetera where was she then?? Such poor writing...and what now? That's it...she is alive ok so what?? They could have focused on Gibbs and his breakdown even more...but no this nonsense is more important. A lame villain, lame story and lame nostalgia...a Mike Franks flashback would have been better..

Really?
niall-mcmahon-26 October 2019
NCIS has been sliding recently but the end of season 16 showed some promise.

Then this.

If there's a scene which encapsulates the rushed, ill-conceived, cringe-worthy mess that is Ziva's return to the show it is the contrived "fight" between her and Torres. Good heavens. How the mighty have fallen. For the love of all that is holy, hire some decent writers. You have some good actors here who plainly love their roles - it's painful watching them struggle with this nonsense.

Ziva is back. Really?
earodrig9 October 2019
I used to be a big fan of Ziva. Cote left the show. Different reasons listed on the web: not enough money, hurt due to injuries on the set, or not satisfied with what they were offering to her character. Ziva has been out, dead, and should stay out. Now, Cote wants to be back. Gee, I wonder why.

Concluded the horrid story line, I hope
koohii14 October 2020
The whole build up to bringing Ziva back from the dead comes to a head here. I don't consider that a spoiler. The denumont is ham-handed schlock, wrapped up with a worse final scene. I will say, however, that it is one of the worst NCIS stories that they've made, and that includes the "It's a wonderful life" near death experience, and the entire season (13, I think) that should just be skipped as it is just so much jingoism. All I can say is that the next 2 episodes are mildly better, so I haven't completely given up hope.

Ziva joined NCIS under false pretenses, nothing else mattered
CrimeDrama17 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Just came across the first two episodes of season 3 and was crudely reminded that Ziva joined NCIS solely to protect her brother, Ari. Once NCIS became aware of Ari's identity, having his sister work the investigation would be a conflict of interest, which it definitely was (e.g. Tony found that Ziva passed cash and a fake passport with Ari's photo). Ziva would have been sent back to Israel immediately, before she could harm the investigation, regardless of known loyalties. This is why I had such a problem with CBS keeping this character on the show for so long. It started as a lie and everyone is OK with that? Gibbs is OK with having a liar on the team? Even if that were true, once she tries to help her brother, that should have been the dealbreaker. Shame on CBS.

I watched S3 E1 and S3 E2 just to see Ari die.
