An Aussie Sopranos - Kind of
brooks25018 October 2019
The more I watch this show, the more I'm starting to get a Sopranos vibe, only Ray is a foot soldier with issues while Tony was the boss with issues. Anyway, both programs are also high-quality shows unique in their own quirky ways. I've watched a lot of TV over the years-- probably too much, and this episode stands out as being one of the very few times I've seen a romantic break up portrayed with the pain, frustration and sadness that accompanies the dissolution of a real adult relationship. That scene in the grocery store is understated and yet very powerful.

Tree of Life

Minimal dialogue. No dramatic verbal exchanges. No big cry moments. Just discard all reminders of the ex while simultaneously brushing your teeth. Distract yourself with work, including a hot girl at work and a shady (pathological?) client. This is the most realistic portrayal of a breakup: Detach and Distract. Post-breakup, Ray seems calm, cool and collected... until a brief run-in provides a moment of clarity and realization, resulting in a burst of violence. The day starts off routinely intact and ends in spontaneous rage, yet it struck the perfect emotional tone. Great acting and great episode.

Some great Aussie drama. And how good is Nick Cassam playing a character with MND!
